"Well, nobody else has called," Downie responded, but thanks anyway. And Downie then thought to himself, after hanging up, What does he mean by " upside down"? Upside down to whom?

Truly, Al Gore gives new meaning to the term reactionary liberalism.

honora, in your continuing battle against kneejerk leftism in defense of Algore, let me help you with the rest of the quote.

Doesn’t even merit paying serious attention to any more.

Except that our public schools still magnify the importance of the Nobel process. They're teaching it our children as if the award automatically elevates the recipient to hero status.

Imagine your kids coming home from school some day soon to tell you what a great peacemaker Al Gore was.

Gore has it locked up, unless Castro dies before the award is given. It will be when hell freezes over that they will ever give it to a political conservative. Gorbachev over Reagan was a good indication on the direction of the Nobel committee. I think in about 1928 was the YMCA, the last you will ever see a Christian get it...oops almost forgot the almost Saint Mother Teresa...probably the only one in the past 50 years to really earn it (maybe Ghandi).

Exit question: Where precisely is the junction between awareness of global warming and peace?

It is a clear attempt to appease the known rage of Al Gore. The double benefit of shutting Al's mouth would be the cessation of release of massive amounts of methane and carbon dioxide (greenhouse gases) from his gullet.

I don’t know if it’s a stretch or not for the Landmark Legal Foundation to nominate someone for the Nobel Peace Prize.

From the Nobel site regarding who may nominate candidates:

1. Members of national assemblies and governments of states;
3. University rectors; professors of social sciences, history, philosophy, law and theology; directors of peace research institutes and foreign policy institutes;

Between Mark Levin’s experience in the Nixon administration and Landmark’s status as an advocacy group, I’m sure someone in Oslo would have to receive the nomination, stamp and register it before it gets laughed out of committee.

But I agree that Limbaugh is a far more qualified nominee than the veep.

DuffBeer on February 1, 2007 at 4:26 PM

Landmark is a law firm, according to their website. Doesn't meet the criteria. And Limbaugh sits on their board which would be some sort of conflict even if they met the criteria otherwise.

I am sure that the nomination process for Nobel prizes is not open. Imagine this group not knowing that…

I am confused here. According to the article I read,

Emails, faxes and letters have been flowing in to the Nobel Institute in Oslo ahead of the February 1 deadline for nominations…

Thousands of people are eligible to submit nominations, including members of parliament and government worldwide, as well as university professors, previous laureates and members of several international institutes.

The five members of the Nobel committee are also allowed to nominate their own candidates at their first meeting in February.
RushBaby on February 1, 2007 at 4:30 PM

It's a closed process meaning it's not open to everyone--the groups described above are about it.

Where precisely is the junction between awareness of global warming and peace?

It's hard to prove this but before I even read the 'exit question' I said to myself "what does global warming have to do with peace?", unless wars are now defined differently.

I explained before what a circus, hoax, and political ploy, to the indignation of Mr. Nobel, the ritual has become. Doesn't even merit paying serious attention to any more.

To decline it, disrespectfully, when awarded, would be the only sane thing, for sane real peace-promoting people of today.

I am sure that the nomination process for Nobel prizes is not open. Imagine this group not knowing that…

I don't know if it's a stretch or not for the Landmark Legal Foundation to nominate someone for the Nobel Peace Prize.

From the Nobel site regarding who may nominate candidates:

1. Members of national assemblies and governments of states;
3. University rectors; professors of social sciences, history, philosophy, law and theology; directors of peace research institutes and foreign policy institutes;

Between Mark Levin's experience in the Nixon administration and Landmark's status as an advocacy group, I'm sure someone in Oslo would have to receive the nomination, stamp and register it before it gets laughed out of committee.

But I agree that Limbaugh is a far more qualified nominee than the veep.

Gore was jointly nominated by three individuals. Of which hegemonic empire are none of these individuals a citizen? Global test, indeed.

MORE GORE

by The Scrapbook

3/30/1998, Volume 003, Issue 28

…Gore called executive editor Leonard Downie Jr. because “I thought about it and thought about it, and I decided I just had to call because you’ve printed a picture of the Earth upside down” on the front page.

There is no “up” in space; Only on maps that orient the Earth’s surface north and south.

Some things are just too damned dumb. I am sure Gore is aware that up and down are meaningless in the universe, but as long as you're printing a picture of the earth, printing the north pole above the south pole is appropriate, assuming humans are the ones reading your newspaper. Honestly.
