[...] So it is just as likely, ceteris paribus, that both CBS and Al-Furqan were sold a video which entrepreneurs had been circulating for weeks, a possibility Hot Air’s article on the controversy admits. Without verifiying the original source of the video, it is impossible to determine its original provenance. The only video which can unequivocably be said to come from the terrorists is that 8-minute footage which bears the Al-Furqan logo (which we have tastefully blurred out of our screen-grab of the Vent video at left).
This is nothing new for CBS. They use to show Vietnam battlefield death too, remember. The 'press' has been doing this since before America was founded. Not that it is something that should be allowed, but there is nothing new in any of this. I wonder of CBS would like to see the return of the 'fairness doctrine' and be forced to show a equal or greater number of dead insurgents on the daily broadcasts? Some how I don't think they would like that at all.

As others have pointed out, this is just “Advocacy Journalism" on the part of this reporter and her employers. That's why you will never see ANY footage of insurgents losing battles or hear any casualty count of the insurgents. CBS doesn't want the insurgents to look bad, now do they? The majority of the 'press' and MSM have declared this another Vietnam and they want "Bush's War' to end in failure.

This is a reliable combat tactic, using negative images with the intent of 'losing the hearts and minds' of the public. Let's persuade the public that this war is a failure by showing only American and Iraqi losses and not the losses of the enemy. That's the best way to influence public opinion to their favor, isn't that right? After all, CBS and others have a proven track record of swaying public support with negative reports and images. They are following the Vietnam Reporters handbook page by page.

I think the key point is that of all the footage available, the footage CBS wants to show is the same that Al Qaeda wants to show. Does that not say something about the world view inside CBS?

Old Guy,

Actually, no it doesn't. That two editors had similar shot selection means pretty much nothing.

I'm not saying that CBS isn't a poorly run and overtly biased news organization. Their track record speaks for itself. What I'm saying is that one cannot draw that conclusion based on this tape.

Eh, I'm not a fan of Final Cut. I've used it and Avid XPress and Premiere (I have both Avid and Premiere Pro on this machine right now). For what I'm doing, Premiere is the best around right now.

They still don’t match perfectly, either because Premiere’s speed effect is not perfectly accurate or because one or the other of the videos has been converted from one standard to another.
Nice work, but you gotta bite the bullet and go with Final Cut Pro (or at least Final Cut Express).

Hmm, I was going to suggest using Babelfish's web page translator, but apparently they don't translate Arabic. It's darn handy otherwise, though--for anyone who isn't familiar with it--although the translations to English range from awkward to downright comical.

Hey, Bryan... regarding this passage:

"download the Al Qaeda video here"

I may be missing something, but I can't read Arabic, and doing the mouseovers, I can't find "view this page in English" link. So, I'm unsure as to where to download the video.

Any suggestions?

That’s just one more reason to hate both Al Qaeda and realPlayer, I guess.

Please post the "cease and desist" order when you receive it. :-)

In response to the update regarding the NYT photos/vid they should be just shut down...period.

The first thing I would do as a parent is corner the SOB with the camera and ask him 'Instead of clicking the shutter why didn't you try to stop the bleeding?'. Then I would attempt to introduce him to God.

Remember Scott Pelle's interview with Bremmer?

"Uh, we report". F*cking a**holes!!!

We'll know soon enough what the situation is:

1) Logan will be dead soon by the hands of AQ
2) She'll get out quick enough so that doesn't happen
3) She'll stay and be quite safe.

If it's the latter then we know CBS knows exactly where the video came from and Logan's being protected by AQ.

Updates: I sent Public Eye an email with a link to this post. Their “I can assure you” line won’t cut it after Rathergate. Hopefully they understand that, and why, and will address my investigation with some rigor. Even if they can refute my findings, that would be better than their asking us to just trust them. They haven’t earned that trust. Thoroughly examining how and where Logan obtained that video would go a long way to building some trust, though.

Do we have a specific email address, so we can all put the heat on them about this?

Bryan,

It’s the source, Krydor. How did Logan get a master or dubmaster of the same source tape AQ used within days of AQ using it? That’s the question. Secondarily, what did CBS know and when did they know it, about Logan’s tape? It’s CBS assuring us based solely on its word that it didn’t come from AQ. How does CBS know that?

It's a fairly simple process for news departments to get "extreme" video. Honestly, and I've been a part of this more than once: something happens, some guy with a camcorder makes a phone call, the station buys the footage (usually for a shirt with the station logo). On occasion, that footage goes national/international. How much of a background check is done? Little to none.

CBS cannot state, with any degree of certainty, that the source was not from AQ. Until this started making the rounds, I'll warrant that CBS had no idea where this footage first turned up or what it was being used for.

The footage was real. Whatever issues one may have (and I do) with the editing of the footage, it does show the aftermath of a real event. There are real issues, as well, regarding how they got the footage. However, we will never know the original source, in spite of some good suspicions as to that source.

This is an exercise in accountability, but little else. If they didn't wake up after Dateline's expose on exploding gas tanks, 60 Minutes magically accelerating Audis, the National Guard memos then they certainly won't change for something that is a depiction of a real event.

Someday, I hope to watch the uploaded video of Pinch Sulzbergers execution for treason.

georgej

It would have happened by now under any wartime president prior to LBJ. I don't think we can win a war unless it's against a Christian country like, say, Serbia or Vatican City. Something the Democrats and their media can get behind and wouldn't set out to undermine.
