Biden announces, immediately destroys presidential hopes; Update: Comma misplaced? Update: “Totally out of context” (Bumped) Update: Audio

posted at 3:26 pm on January 31, 2007 by Allahpundit

Drudge is teasing this at the top of the page with an emphasis on the word “clean.” Er, Matt — it’s not just the hygiene angle that’s troubling here.

Mr. Biden is equally skeptical—albeit in a slightly more backhanded way—about Mr. Obama. “I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy,” he said. “I mean, that’s a storybook, man.”

He announced he’s running this morning. And now, instantly, he’s finished. He’s the William Henry Harrison of presidential candidates.

Not that he ever had a prayer anyway.

He’s also got a knack for this sort of racist “straight talk.” Remember?

K-Lo compares it to Matthews complimenting Michael Steele on his “child-like” gentleness, so atypical of the violent black men whom Matthews is sure haunt white southerners’ dreams.

Exit question: On the spectrum of enlightened, “positive,” left-wing racism, where does this fall vis-a-vis a nutroots minstrel-face photoshop?

Update: You’ve got to be kidding.

Update: Biden passes on the too clever by half comma defense and invokes context, sweet context. Without actually explaining what the missing context was.

“And with regard to the assertions I have just read as I walked over here… about Barack Obama. Barack Obama is probably the most exciting candidate that the Democratic or Republican Party has produced, at least since I have been around. And he is fresh, he is new, he is insightful, and I really regret that some have taken totally out of context my use of the word ‘clean.’

“So I called Barack,” he added, “and he said ‘Joe you don’t have to explain anything to me.’”…

About his use of the word “clean” to describe Obama, Biden explained by saying, “My mother has an expression: clean as a whistle, sharp as tack. That’s the context.”

Update (Ian): Audio.

In my neck of the woods, “bright” means a black person who isn’t really really all the way black, but is of mixed blood. Sometimes used as a compliment, other times not.

woodie4827 on January 31, 2007 at 3:48 PM

Used to be that using “articulate” when talking about a black person was considered condescending and indicative of latent racism.

mikeyboss on January 31, 2007 at 3:49 PM

Where do you put a comma to improve the quote. Am I missing something?

Did Biden know he was being taped?! Good Lord, the running off at the mouth!
(I love it!), but what is wrong with this man and how stupid is he?
In fact, how stupid are all the Dhimmicrats with their “plans” for Iraq?
Yep, he’s finished in his presidential run AND he won’t be too popular with his darker-skinned colleagues in Washington anymore, if he ever was…
The way he went on and on Obama smacked too much of the ghey–NTTAWWT.

I can’t stand Joe Biden, but he clearly didn’t mean this in a racist way… I’m sure he meant to say “We have the first exciting, viable black candidate, and he’s a bright and articulate guy without any scandal at all”.

It is pretty funny, though, because you know they’d take twist the intent and tar+feather a conservative for the same thing.

This won’t hurt him with the left. They secretly agree with him and will defend his comments and his idiotic “context” argument. But, let one of ours say something like that…context be damned.

Maybe he means clean because he’s a black guy not on crack. (Now marry this up with his quickie mart comments)

Jim Treacher on January 31, 2007 at 5:09 PM

Update: You’ve got to be kidding.

Of course the comma would’ve made a difference in the print quote. The audio makes it clear that you could also translate it this way and get closer to what he meant:

“…first mainstream African-American candidate. He is … blah blah”

Anwyn on January 31, 2007 at 5:16 PM

I’m still waiting for the joy I will experience when Hillary is forced to criticize a black guy.

JackM on January 31, 2007 at 5:24 PM

Don’t forget Biden’s:

“You don’t know my state,” he said. “My state was a slave state. My state is a border state. My state has the eighth-largest black population in the country. My state is anything from a Northeast liberal state.”

Comment from last August where he was trying to claim he could do well with the black vote. I am sure he is getting a lot of traction with his ‘slave state street cred’ effort these days…

right2bright on January 31, 2007 at 6:06 PM

Seriously, Dems have been “botching” jokes all week. First it was Hillarly talking about those “evil and bad men” now Biden telling us he likes his African-Americans, and he likes them clean.

Wait for the “botched joke” press conference. Followed by him shouting in to the camera that this is a neo-con smear job, and that black people knew what he meant. Later followed by web pages saying the same thing, before linking to an editorial that attempts to make the case that very few blacks are clean. Then he’ll be caught by the bloggers, and descretely remove that link from the main page. (K, I took that too far, I was mocking how the Kerry “botched joke” fiasco went, if you followed it all the way through).

RightWinged on January 31, 2007 at 6:22 PM

Is it the soft racism of the left? I dunno.

But I am reminded of a portion of Chris Rock’s routine where he riffs on people referring to Colin Powell as “well-spoken.”

Rock then states it’s not as if Powell is going to say,(insert stepnfetch type accent) “I’m gonna drop me some bombs!”

The above was paraphrased as best from memory and still makes me laugh.

Now back to your regularly scheduled postings.

He was against the comma, before he was for it.

bloggless on January 31, 2007 at 7:56 PM

I think that Biden puts the comment in the context of other African Americans that have run before Obama, I think it’s kind of stretch to say that this displays some type of latent racism. I think Biden’s saying that this is the first black Democrat that actually has a chance of winning rather than “…and look at this black guy, who’s unusually smart and good-looking for his skin color.”

Greg Tinti on January 31, 2007 at 12:38 PM

Either you’re an idiot or you’re being funny, if the latter is the case, you missed it. When a White person says a black person is articulate this is a racist statment because it assumes that most blacks are NOT articulate. Which would be the same as likening all Whites to TRAILER PARK TRASH. And even though inarticulate Whites exist, you’ll never hear the same thing said about a “well spoken” White. George Bush is a bumbling idiot that can’t speak English to save his life but this is NOT because he’s White, it’s because he’s dumb. To condescendingly praise a black person as “articulate” is no different than saying ‘he’s a credit to his race” or “he made that play because of his “athleticism”, as if years of playing basketball in playgrounds, highschool and then college, has nothing to do with it. This is from the same BUTTHOLE that proudly delcared his state to have been a “slave state’ as if that is something to be proud of. Racists like this think that people like Condi Rice, Colin Powell, or Clarence Thomas are “exceptions” and are “not like the rest of those N*ggers”, irrespective of the fact that Frederick Douglas went to college as a Slave. The “clean” remark is neither here nor there as there are entirely too many possible explanations for it. Clearly though, leaning towards a racist interpretation would not be out of line, considering the filth that has come out of this buffoons mouth in the past.

Imagine living in a world where people who couldn’t carry your intellectual jockstrap ( ala Larry Holmes, lol), were given the benefit of intellect they didn’t possess, merely because they are White, while you, with an I.Q. somewhere in the stratosphere were treated as inferior because you were Black . Welcome to my world. Biden is just another intellectual light weight with delusions of grandeur…..

I am loving these democrats. What a great year this is going to be.
Let’s see, and please add to it so we don’t forget:
Webb and his 4 yr old child porn
Jefferson and his frozen assets
Biden thinking Iraq is a pie
Biden again saying Obama is clean for a black man
Hillary’s bad boy
Kennedy for being a fat and stupid Kennedy
Wu for talking about Klingons
Pelosi the tuna queen
Pelosi for picking people who have no idea what an Al Queda is
Reid and his land deals
Carter the anti-semite

I love these democrats!

faraway on January 31, 2007 at 9:40 PM

“Nice-looking”? How can anybody think that crazy old freak is nice-looking? And how can Biden even know whether he’s “articulate”? Is he claiming he speaks Arabic well enough to tell the difference? But everything else aside, just calling Osama “bright and clean” is enough to prove Biden is on the wrong side of the War on Terror.

Kralizec on January 31, 2007 at 9:50 PM

I have to ask, what exactly does a leftist have to do to be considered racist? Does such an act exist?

Granted, I’m not positive that Biden is a racist, because there’s a good chance that he’s too stupid for it.

oakpack on February 1, 2007 at 12:06 AM

I have to ask, what exactly does a leftist have to do to be considered racist?

Answer: They can say ANYTHING and they’re not racist. Remember “Willy” Nagin and the Chocolate City? Not racist. KKK Byrd and the n—-r word. Not racist. Biden and the finally-a-clean-black-man remark. Not racist! Jessie Jackson and “Hymie Town.” Not racist. Louis Farrakhan and the “let’s cut off Jews heads and watch them roll down the street” remark. Not racist.

I guess when we’re all tired of being racists we could become democrats. Viola! Not racist!
