Anti-war protesters vandalize Capitol building; Update: Protesters spat on Iraq war vet?

The Hill reports that anti-war protesters in town this weekend for the big defeat rally decided to spray their dissent all over the steps of the U.S. Capitol building:

Approximately 300 protesters were allowed to take the steps and began to spray paint “anarchist symbols” and phrase such as “Our capitol building” and “you can’t stop us” around the area, thesource said.

No shame:

“To get that close to the Capitol building, that is ridiculous,” the second source said. “[Police] were told not to arrest anyone.

The second source added that police had to stand by and watch as protesters posed in front of their graffiti.

Update (AP): Kristinn Taylor has a post up at Free Republic claiming that Iraq war vet Joshua Sparling — no stranger to derision from the anti-war side — was spat on when he turned out to counterprotest in D.C. this weekend.

Update (AP): Good news: he wasn’t spit on. Bad news: he was spit at.

There were a few tense moments, however, including an encounter involving Joshua Sparling, 25, who was on crutches and who said he was a corporal with the 82nd Airborne Division and lost his right leg below the knee in Ramadi, Iraq. Mr. Sparling spoke at a smaller rally held earlier in the day at the United States Navy Memorial, and voiced his support for the administration’s policies in Iraq.

Later, as antiwar protesters passed where he and his group were standing, words were exchanged and one of the antiwar protestors spit at the ground near Mr. Sparling; he spit back.

Thanks to RLW for the tip.

And my tax dollars are going to pay for the clean-up? They should hold the sponsoring organizations responsible for the costs.

Valiant on January 28, 2007 at 8:36 PM

My only question is…

Were the DC/Capital police told not to arrest people in the very minor almost non-existent rally last week?

(/sarcasm)

So much for a peaceful rally on behalf of the Anti-war protesters.

F15Mech on January 28, 2007 at 8:46 PM

Thank God the Democrats are now in power and can tell the police to do things like this.

I predict total and utter failure of our government in two to four years.

They are embarassed to be Americans, have no backbone, and will allow collective defacation of all that stands for the history of this country.

Sickening.

Don’t the Capital Police work for the Squeaker Of The House?

bdfaith on January 28, 2007 at 8:48 PM

Let the cops do their jobs. Vandals deserve a good beating.

packsoldier on January 28, 2007 at 8:48 PM

Move along people. Nothing to see here. Bill Clinton has already wrtten a letter to the Capital Police asking them to forego the caning of the vandals.

CyberCipher on January 28, 2007 at 8:57 PM

Need photos …. if they spraypainted it’ll be there tomorrow for all to see. Vandals. In the classic sense – the ones who literally tore down civilization and then couldn’t understand where all the food, clothing, money, shelter went.

naliaka on January 28, 2007 at 9:09 PM

What!! The cops had to stand by . Well I never. If I was in charge (god forbid) I would withhold any future march permits. Shouldn’t there be some kind of claus in the permit application process that makes all liability for damage and clean up the responsibility of the applicant. And what about the public safty issue! These yahoos shouldn’t be allowed to run all willy nilly through the Capitol! These are historical monuments for cryin out loud. By the looks of their constiuency I think Vegas or Disneyland would be a better choice. They should have to carry an insurance policy, not to mention the criminal aspect of defacing a historical site. Dang!

sonnyspats1 on January 28, 2007 at 9:11 PM

Need 24 hour rule on this one. The claim is that the paint was cleaned up, so in theory no trace of a crime. Would like more verification that it happened.

naliaka on January 28, 2007 at 9:14 PM

If they are true anarchists, would they be morally opposed to me beating them to death? I don’t recall if anarchy includes laws against assault and murder??

TugboatPhil on January 28, 2007 at 9:17 PM

“[Police] were told not to arrest anyone.”

Yeap, Democrats in control…….

Just like the wall the Clinton Justice Department put up keeping the CIA from talking to the FBI, i.e. Jamie Garrellick, then Abel Danger, then……… 9/11.

It did not take them long to go back to their old tricks, did it?

PinkyBigglesworth on January 28, 2007 at 9:18 PM

So the hands of the police have been tied by ridiculous ROE too? Why am I not surprised? So scum like that defaced a national landmark–but you know, don’t question their patriotism–and got away with it, so they’re just going to be emboldened to do it again. Some quality time with police batons, our fine correctional facilities, and the sinus-clearing properties of CS gas would have been a lot more educational.

ReubenJCogburn on January 28, 2007 at 9:19 PM

The question is who told the police. Coward or sympathizer?…no wait…I’m sure it was Rove.

Once again, I would like to introduce the Democratic party and their members.
I am so happy not to be associated with them, but several who post are proud of these people and their actions. Oh, they will say they condemn, but they send their money and support to condone.
To our liberal poster friends, stand up and let us know how proud you are to be a part of this party.
You only post with a complaint, never hear from you when this stuff happens. You are and should be ashamed of being a Democrat.

right2bright on January 28, 2007 at 9:25 PM

Ian, this report is almost unbelievable. This is 2007 and I’m reading about people who are re-living 1967. We cannot stand by and watch those old burn-outs commit crimes against democracy again. They got away with back then; we cannot allow them to succeed again now. God help us. It’s time to pray people, pray that we are inspired and instilled with the wisdom to counter these evil misguide weaklings.

ekuspa40 on January 28, 2007 at 9:40 PM

San Francisco probably runs a program to give away the spray paint.

During WTO in Seattle, someone thought it would be a brilliant idea to park his Jaguar on the street half a block up from the main moonbat parade route. Needless to say that Jag had a new “progressive” paint job by the end of the day.

“[Police] were told not to arrest anyone.”

The question is who told the police.

Limerick on January 28, 2007 at 9:23 PM

Indeed the 64K question.

The best way to stop this BS, is to shine the light of truth on it. If Scooter Libby is defending his freedom for statements made AFTER the prosecuter new who divulged V. Plaims identity {and no, it was not Carl Rove}, buy kept on investigating anyway… then the American Tax Payers are also entitled to know who is intentially selectively enforcing the laws of this country.

Don’t you think???

PinkyBigglesworth on January 28, 2007 at 9:42 PM

Slightly off topic: Several years ago when they had the WTO riots in Seattle, the anarchists were well represented fueling the chaos. There was a photo in one of the local newspapers showing an anarchist on the canopy above the entrance to the Niketown store. He was stomping on the Niketown sign, trying to remove it from the canopy. And, you guessed it, he was wearing Nike athletic shoes. That is all you need to know about the integrity of anarchists.

What’s funny is the anti-war crowd claims to care about the troops and just wants to bring them home. Leaving aside the fact that you don’t fight wars based on how to get troops home, you fight them to win… What I want to know is, why do these peace loving troop loving lefties never ask the troops what they think? Sure, they can find a few vets and more than a few fake vets to join their cause, but why don’t they care what the majority of troops have to say? Why don’t they care about the soaring reenlistment? And in the end, they reveal themselves to actually be troop haters. Are they going to try to do what they did to the troops coming home from Vietnam? I think these hippies are in for a rude awakening if they try that sh** this time. I think there are enough of us that won’t tolerate troop hatred.

“GIVE PEACE A CHANCE, EXCEPT WHEN WE ARE PROTESTING!!!”

Troy Rasmussen on January 28, 2007 at 9:58 PM

Another Seattle story about Donks and the police force.

There have been problems with rioting in Pioneer Square on Fat Tuesday celebrations. It is gang-bangers that use the opportunity to cause chaos. The first year the police were called in and they went in busting heads and restoring order. The local media and citizenry were aghast. (Seattle is a VERY blue city).

The next year the police stayed on the perimeter of the celebration. The violence started again, but the police stayed put. One young man was stomped to death and another woman was raped on the street. When people went up to the police to get them to respond, they were told that their orders were to observe from the perimeter only.

It took a tragedy like that for the Democatic city council to realize the police are a good thing. The next year the police were there in advance to keep things from getting out of control. There hasn’t been a problem since.

the Donk approach…..

If the Iraqis fail to give the left their often dreamed of civil war, then why can’t we give them one?

Griz on January 28, 2007 at 10:20 PM

For those calling for photos, in one of the articles either here or on MM’s blog, the idiots posed in front of their graffiti for pictures.

It’s only a matter of time before they show up on the net.

What I would like to know is….What kind of coordination went on between the democratic party and some of these protest groups to refrain from protesting until after the election.

If they were this exercised over the war, why were they not protesting all along? Now that more troops are being sent, as many democrats kept demanding, they are protesting?

…and spitting at a soldier on crutches. What courage.

91Veteran on January 28, 2007 at 10:44 PM

I visited the Capital Bldg. for the very first time last Saturday. Attempting to take a photo of my family with their backs to the Capital and facing the Lincoln Memorial, I was waved away by a Capital Police Office (CPO) dressed like a ninja holding an automatic weapon. We were told that we were not permitted to PHOTOGRAPH the CPO. But now I’m led to believe that I could have desecrated the Capital stairs? WTF?

They support the troops.

Not with blood, sweat and tears.

But at least with spit.

profitsbeard on January 29, 2007 at 12:34 AM

i was wondering, what do you think about what krisynn said…

Tens of thousands of anti-American leftists and their dupes marched on our nation’s capital calling for America’s defeat in the war on terror in Iraq.

Only about forty people could be bothered to turn out in support of America’s victory in Iraq. Among those forty was a civilian POW held by the North Vietnamese communists and several Iraq war veterans–including wounded warriors who left the hospital to stand up for their brothers in arms on the home front.

Why did former POW Mike Benge and Iraq vet Joshua Sparling only find a few dozen people willing to stand with them? Why, as the anti-American left is heading toward repeating their victory in Vietnam, are so many people sitting on their asses and doing nothing to stop them?

i remember organizing pw. the ratio was 1/30 members who would appear at an event. our ideals, these men and this country deserve a better class of citizen patriots than it currently suffers.

I’m not talking about a Jets v. Sharks urban brawl. The lefties I get around talk about a block-by-block war in the suburbs. Even ones here in the South. I dunno, maybe they would cow the general population. I’d have to think, though, that there’s more than a few gun-totin’ rednecks out there that wouldn’t back down from a fight if it came to them.

auspatriotman on January 29, 2007 at 12:56 AM

From this article:

He [U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) Chief Phillip Morse] added, “It is the USCP’s duty and responsibility to protect the Capitol complex, staff and public while allowing the public to exercise their First Amendment rights … at the end of the day, both occurred without injury to protestors [sic] or officers.”

Vandalism of public property, especially the U.S. Capitol is now protected by the first amendment?!?!?!

mojojojo on January 29, 2007 at 1:35 AM

Vandalism of public property, especially the U.S. Capitol is now protected by the first amendment?!?!?!

Well of course, during a Republican administration. Attempt to display opposition to a socialist government and see what it gets you.

Several rats left their latrines for the weekend and gathered on the steps of the U.S. Capitol building for a time.

No antidotes were authorized by the current Congress and, after leaving tracks behind, eventually they disbursed back to their usual latrines.

Read Orson Scott Card’s latest novel Empire.

Our liberal friends start the Second American Civil War after the orchestrate the assassination of the President and Vice President (i.e., “Booosh” and Cheney).

Ever wonder why it is ALWAYS the left that is violent, that has “street demonstrations,” and claims the right to ignore law as well as normal everyday civilty?

It’s because LIBERALS *HATE* America and those people who are patriots. They are only a “flash point” away from attempting a putsch.

georgej on January 29, 2007 at 3:17 AM

Meanwhile, back in the *real* world … US and Iraqi troops kill up to 300 jihadis … terrorists who would otherwise be coming here to kill women and children … and anyone who dared to protest against them.

Tony737 on January 29, 2007 at 4:32 AM

According to Gateway pundit, Capital Police Chief Phillip Morse “responded to these claims in an e-mail Sunday afternoon, explaining that the protesters were seeking confrontation with the police.”

If I were the Chief, I’d have given it to them.

I’d have surrounded them and taken as many of them into custody as possible and charged them with felony destruction of federal property.

But, as I’m not Moris, and as he no doubt has specific orders to NOT arrest any of these libeals (no doubt by Her Speakership), they got away with it.

Next time they WILL try to force entry into the Capital, because “tolerance” equates with weakness to the left. Then what are the Capital police going to do? Take some time and refresh your knowledge of early Soviet history….

georgej on January 29, 2007 at 5:47 AM

They were afraid if they arrested them that they would make martyrs of them.
I say, the only good martyr is a dead martyr.

Something other than simply complaining about it and expecting someone else to solve the problem.

At this point, we’re just looking for people who are willing to get off their a$$ and be active in whatever way possible. People who believe this country is more important than watching the Simpsons or American Idol. People who, even if it’s an hour a week, have enough backbone to do more than whine.
