Michael Steele named GOPAC chairman

It’s not the chairmanship I wanted Steele to have, but it’s certainly one he will succeed at:

GOPAC today announced former Congressman J.C. Watts, Jr. will be stepping down after serving nearly four years as Chairman. Former Maryland Lieutenant Governor Michael Steele will be named as GOPAC’s seventh Chairman.

Under Watts’ leadership, GOPAC more than tripled fundraising, raising nearly $9 million during the last election cycle. GOPAC trained thousands of Republican activists across the country and assisted Republican organizations in recruiting candidates for local office. GOPAC also provided direct campaign support to candidates in 17 states.

###

“I intend to take GOPAC back to the message and mission that made it great. We will concentrate GOPAC’s efforts on recruiting, training, and equipping candidates across the country to establish and maintain a republican majority.” Michael Steele said.

Steele went on to say, “The time is now for GOPAC to step up and play a pivotal role in the upcoming elections across the country. The strategies I implement will make this a reality and I look forward to the challenge.”

Michael Steele…

Hmmm, now there’s a man I could vote for as the first black US President.

And with a name like that, how can you not vote for him.

YOU HEAR THAT MARYLAND! HOW COULD YOU VOTE FOR THAT POSER CARDIN.

Jones Zemkophill on January 25, 2007 at 2:48 PM

Hurray!!!
Love Steele…he’s a man who’s going places and I love to see him taking the GOP with him!

Jen the Neocon on January 25, 2007 at 2:51 PM

I guess it’s a start to a turnaround. Maybe.

Editor on January 25, 2007 at 3:00 PM

Senator Michael Steele still sounds better.

joeswampy on January 25, 2007 at 3:01 PM

Indeed.

Ian on January 25, 2007 at 3:03 PM

Well, that’s a step in the right direction.

He should have gotten the RNC chair.

But Yeah, Senator would have been even better.

LegendHasIt on January 25, 2007 at 3:09 PM

Amen joeswampy!

Steele will produce.

doufree on January 25, 2007 at 3:09 PM

Is it just me, or does $9 million sound a little weak? I read an article the other day the PETA has $25 million per year in donations.

Regardless, congratulations Mr. Steele!

natesnake on January 25, 2007 at 3:23 PM

Finally Republicans do something we can be happy with.

thirteen28 on January 25, 2007 at 3:26 PM

It’a about time. He has attractive ears in addition to his other qualifications.

bopbottle on January 25, 2007 at 3:28 PM

I’m glad the party is looking out for Mr.Steel because I am sure he will be looking out for us. Now if he comes through recruiting quality conservative candidates, then well have something. Right now the pickins are pretty slim.

sonnyspats1 on January 25, 2007 at 3:28 PM

I’d like to see him addressed as President Steele on January 20, 2009.

Steele the election!

PinkyBigglesworth on January 25, 2007 at 3:43 PM

I’d like to see him addressed as President Steele on January 20, 2009.

Considering how weak the GOP field is, why are not talking about Steele for a 2008 or 2012 nomination?

And before anyone points to experience, consider this, both Bush and Clinton were governors, and the left is salivating over Obama who is bearly finishing his second year as a Senator. If vast experience doesn’t matter with them, why should it matter with Steele?

natesnake on January 25, 2007 at 3:47 PM

I wish him good luck in his new role.

The party is going to need a lot of it as well as it prepares to embark for the wilderness for another 40 years..

normsrevenge on January 25, 2007 at 4:06 PM

Steele deserved more than GOPAC but at least the Bush GOP hasn’t ejected all the conservatives from the party.

Congressman J.C. Watts, Jr. is a great Republican. I would love to see him run for President. As GOPAC chairman he was “good” at doing what Republicans wanted (raising money), but did not teach what Republicans need to learn.

Republicans have lost the ability to communicate. When it comes to race/class issues there is too much confusion by the “rodeo clown” Democrats. When will a Republican call the Liberals and Democrats the real racists?

It will take black folks talking “inside baseball” to remove the mystery. Our friend Michelle Malkin has a book on the subject that illustrates the Liberal’s sickness.

Deep down the Democrats and Liberals despise minorities, the poor, the diseased – because they illustrate Liberal incompetence, but they love those votes!

Republicans are such honest to goodness GOOD people they are paralyzed by the accusation. Liberals like to see that dear in the headlight look.

Being a black conservative Republican, I do admit it is guilty fun calling Libs on their crap. Let’s hope Steele can teach the rest of you how to wield this mighty sword.

It’s not the RNC chair, but it’s something.

Anyway, I’m intrigued by this Steele for President idea, how do we go about making it happen?

Wolfman on January 25, 2007 at 4:27 PM

Anyway, I’m intrigued by this Steele for President idea, how do we go about making it happen?

Considering the early weak-ass-field-of-contenders, send e-mails to all of your GOP elected officials (house, senate, executive committee, local officials, etc.) and anyone who holds some political power with an “R” by their name.

Who knows how much traction it would ultimately get, but we have less than 22 months to float the idea out there.

Given the wishy/washy conservative convictions of the current GOP pool, I’d vote for Steele in a second.

natesnake on January 25, 2007 at 4:51 PM

Back during the election last year, HotAir posted more than a few threads and even a Vent or two if I remember correctly about Steele.

He’s a solid citizen and a real conservative. After he lost the Senate election, many of us here were rooting for him to get the RNC post. Personally, I think the RNC made a big mistake by not picking Steele.

Wouldn’t President be a tough nut to crack for him at this stage in the game? Can’t remember seeing a poll indicating his name recognition, but outside of Maryland and us junkies, he’s probably not widely known. However, Billy Clinton was an unknown in 1992. So, it may be possible. Aside from President, he for sure would be a great pick for the VP slot on the ticket.

I’d love to see him run for President. Hell, let’s all write him and let him know he should give it a shot.

I’m drafting a note this very minute.

natesnake on January 25, 2007 at 4:58 PM

This is a good call. Steele can only help get the Republican message out.

Don’t forget you can still send a message to the Senatorial Committee by signing this petition.

It’s really taking off. When I signed up yesterday there were only 5 signers, now it’s at 10,000+! Get ‘em!

NTWR on January 25, 2007 at 5:59 PM

Thank goodness! He is definitely a man to support, and get behind.

Go STEELE!

CrimsonFisted on January 25, 2007 at 6:53 PM

We replace one great individual, and leader with another. That’s a nice position to be in. No doubt Steele will succeed in this endeavor…and hopefully get the GOP back on it’s conservative agenda…….

ritethinker on January 25, 2007 at 8:09 PM

Screw the GOP. Give them nothing.

Lehuster on January 25, 2007 at 8:40 PM

Very important to the GOP future are Michael Steele, Ken Blackwell, Lynne Swan adn JC Watts. I am glad that Michael Steele has a position where he can start to help the GOP.

Phil Byler on January 25, 2007 at 9:13 PM

You know all those straw polls asking who you’d vote for President that are all over the place? I don’t have the slightest interest in participating in them because there’s nobody being offered that I feel would actually be the right choice.

But Steele… Now that’s interesting. Wouldn’t it be great to see him go up against Obama? And wouldn’t it be excellent and appropriate if America’s first black President was also from the party of Abe Lincoln?

techno_barbarian on January 25, 2007 at 10:53 PM

Okay. This is a start. For now.
