All of Bush’s pontificating about Iraq rings pretty hollow to me when he refuses to secure our borders.

There’s an option missing from the poll: I didn’t watch.

Watcher on January 24, 2007 at 2:05 AM

it was a decent speech, good passion and some interesting little pieces but you can tell he’s tired and striving not to alienate the dems who are furious anyway

Defector01 on January 24, 2007 at 2:07 AM

What did I think…?

I think if I have to hear any more BS come out of my President’s mouth I might have to vote for John McCain in 2008.

I want a leader not a shut-in waiting for his term to be over. Americans are dying and he is doing nothing! -I am one of his biggest supporters and it pains me to have to watch our strength collapse.

Opinionnation on January 24, 2007 at 2:32 AM

It was a good speech, well delivered. See my comments in the open thread.

georgej on January 24, 2007 at 2:37 AM

The President was great ! He laid the Iraq equation on the table and walked away, resting the burden of responsibility squarely on the shoulders of the Democrats. Contempt prior to investigation is a serious shortcomming. I’m sure they didn’t recognize that and will bitch and moan like a teenager trying to avoid taking out the trash! I liked Mr. Bush’s recognition of the endeavors of private citizens. It was reminicent of Ronald Reagan. The Dems don’t get it. I could see them seething with jealousy and anger, it was bubbling to the surface. The rest were bowing their head in an effort to convey a message to the President, which was ‘you are in for big trouble when we get done with you’. Well F-You Democrats. Stand tall Mr. President. They are playing head games with you. They are the ones full of fear, projecting it on others. They are like a bunch of looters during a crisis, or rats on a sinking ship, or junkies who love lies and confusion to aquire gain without having earned them out right. They are the ones who should be afraid, very afraid for the price we will all pay, for the up comming shit storm they are brewing Up! Ronald Regan used to like the old show biz saying “You ain’t seen nothing yet”!

The Apologist on January 24, 2007 at 3:17 AM

The performance itself was good. Unfortunately, the “new” content was sorely lacking, at least from a small-gubmint conservative point of view.

No it isn’t funny. As Christopher Hitchens says, making fun of George Bush is the joke stupid people tell to make themselves feel smart.

billy on January 24, 2007 at 4:34 AM

Perhaps one of the problems with Bush is a lack of credibility. People don’t believe him, in whole or part, because people believe:

+ His perception of reality, and ability to effectively determine conditions in our national environment, is at times questionable.

+ His judgement, and ability to form effective solutions to problems, especially in Iraq, is lacking.

+ He has demonstrated a willingness to favor the wealthy and corporate interests over the interests of the United States and it’s citizens, especially with regard to illegal immigration and border control.

+ He has engaged in spending that, to many, seems almost out of control.

+ His public persona and presentation leaves many people with the impression that he does not posses the superior intellect, and shrewd judgement, that is fundamental to filling a position as important as the President of the Untied States.

+ He seems to disregard basic safeguards on presidential power on a regular basis and makes correction only after substantial proof and pressure.

At best these considerations make many people feel uneasy, or perhaps uncertain, that Bush’s proposed courses of action will be effective and in the best intersts of the nation. At worst, well, you don’t have to go very far to see that assessment.

omegaram on January 24, 2007 at 6:18 AM

Just finished watching (DVR)… I thought it was a very good speech. My favorite line, something to the effect that what ever the Congress voted for concerning Iraq, you didn’t vote for defeat…

Zorro on January 24, 2007 at 6:29 AM

I’m encouraged by his understanding of the Islamic menace. (Michelle has this portion of the speech hilited at her blog.) The Dems are still clueless. What will it take to make these so-called leaders pick up a book and do a little reading?

Nukes hitting every major city on the Eastern seaboard. With the apparent Kim Jong-il/Ahmadinejad nuclear alliance, this will probably happen sooner than later.

… No, wait… What am I thinking?!?! They’ll just blame Bush and get re-elected.

Just repeat after Michael Moore/Pelosi/Sheehan:

Purely political… in other words, solely executed and derived for the Dems who are also purely political. We’ve seen the smoke, now we’ll get to watch the dems drag out their mirrors… If only the SOBs would turn their mirrors and gaze upon theirselves. Oh… what a sight they’d see.

I’d like to know more about his “guest worker program”. Will employers be forced to pay the new minimum wage for “jobs Americans won’t do”. Will “guest workers” be as attractive to employers if they aren’t paid under the table? Will employers who cheat the system finally be prosecuted?

ctmom on January 24, 2007 at 8:30 AM

Bush is not a conservative. Let’s hope we don’t get fooled again by the RINO’s.

bigbeas on January 24, 2007 at 8:42 AM

Didn’t tune in. There’s nothing he could say to redeem himself, in my eyes. I suspect I’m not alone.

Tilting to the left (global warming alarmism… wtf?) isn’t going to do it. Repeating tired “Iraq is the most important struggle humanity has faced ever and if we fail we’re doomed” rhetoric isn’t going to do it.

Mark Jaquith on January 24, 2007 at 9:02 AM

I couldn’t/didn’t watch; Don’t have the stomach for it anymore.

Until someone will defend free market capitalism, Christianity, honesty in government, and low taxes, we conservatives are pretty well screwed.

The bigots on the left will never be persuaded, and will always be juvenile or dishonest as they reject personal responsibility.

So I’m waiting for someone to defend the policies, principles, and beliefs that made the USA the most free, innovative, and prosperous country in human history.

rockhauler on January 24, 2007 at 9:04 AM

One thing I especially liked was the zinger he put to the Congress about giving his Iraqi plan a chance.

I also was impressed that he talked about the economy first.

W should use his remaining days in office telling the truth about our Islamist enemies’ greatest allies: the Democrats, not trying to “get along” with these turncoats. I fear for ‘08, unless this saccharine “new tone” Newspeak (and Bush isn’t the only one using it) changes into honest, straight talk. What could possibly be lost by exposing the Democrats’ real agenda and making them accountable for it?

Halley on January 24, 2007 at 9:27 AM

No one agrees with any politician 100% of the time, and I don’t like his immigration policies or support of increasing the minimum wage, but I thought W did a great job overall, and I’m proud he’s our President.

With regard to fighting terror, Bush stands his ground. That is important to me in a Commander in Chief, especially since Drudge’s headline last night and today reflects Prez Tom saying that Israel and the US will soon be destroyed.

Imagine a waffling Kerry or Hillary, both of whom play to opinion polls, overseeing our national security. Now, that’s scary.

It was sadly funny to see the Dems leaping up to “support” the troops (but only because that’s PC at the moment) yet refusing to support winning this war … which of course, would bring our troops home more quickly and keep us all safer.

Hopefully Americans will wake up to the realities of the war on terror, and what the terrorists continue to strive to do (ie, destroy us!), before another attack here at home — seemingly the only thing that makes terrorism real to us.

eucher on January 24, 2007 at 9:34 AM

All Bush ever had going for him was certitude. Now that’s gone and it’s pretty pathetic. Webb was great.

Imus had a funny comment on Nancy P: she blinks so much she looks like a prisoner of war trying to send a message.

What’s that line from Pride and Prejudice–what do we live for if not to make light of our neighbors. Something like that.

Yawn.

Webb was great.

Really? He sounded pretty divisive, like a cheap political hack for his Party. He immediately tried to divide Americans with Republican “this” and Democrats “that”. The President didn’t do any of this.

And his comment about sleeping with his dad’s war photo for 4 months or weeks or whatever timeframe he made up? Blech! Too much information.

He could’ve easily taken the high road to make Americans comfortable with the new (D) leadership but it sounds as if we’re in for more of the same from them.

CliffHanger on January 24, 2007 at 10:20 AM

honora, your sarcasm and mockery makes me want to throw up.
That’s your President, too–we all had to suffer through the 8 years of nothing that were Clintoon’s.
And Billy Jeff was PROUD of being of divisive! Ditto his wife, Mrs. “Vast Right Wing Conspiracy.”

I’m proud as all get out that Bush is my President and if those damm Dems would just lead, follow or get out of the way, we could win this war in a much shorter time.
But the Dems want *ALL* the power and that’s what’s important to them–they’re too stupid to realize that if we lose this war (by withdrawing and/or retreat/”redeployment”/whatever the hell else they call it), there won’t be any America or political power for them to have.
As someone already said, I hope they’ve bought their Korans, prayer rugs and burkas.
Maybe Nancy’s practicing against the day when all you can see of her are her blinking eyes under a full chador…

Jim Webb looked like a self made man who quit work too early. Some of his quotes were farcical, at best. The bit about Eisenhower ending the Korean War as soon as he became President killed me. Forty years later we’re still there and the Norks are as dangerous, if not more so, than ever.

Then there was that wonderful two sentence construct where the second sentence contradicted the first. ‘Not a precipitous withdrawal that ignores the possibility of further chaos. But an immediate shift toward strong regionally-based diplomacy, a policy that takes our soldiers off the streets of Iraq¹s cities, and a formula that will in short order allow our combat forces to leave Iraq.

Well, Jimmuh. Which is it? And to think this guy won his Senate seat by 0.03% and believes he has a mandate is ridiculous.

SotUs always sound great, and this was no exception. I was even almost satisfied with his illegal immigration strategery. But c’mon, he won’t be able to get anything done with the obstructionists at the helm. And how do you decrease energy consumption by 20% while simultaneously increasing the population (illegal population) by millions each year? Something does not compute.

Which leads me to the next point…the unblinking drone was obviously sent in for a tune-up prior to the speech and they turned the bps (blinks per second) up waaaay too high. That seemed to cause some sort of malfunction of the mouth parts which were out of control, too.

You will never hear us “rightwingers” complain that our President is not uniting the people of this country because we’re all united where it counts. We are solidly united behind our troops AND their mission as they prosecute the battle in Iraq and the GWOT.

honora on January 24, 2007 at 2:46 PM

Look at the economic numbers and the fact there’s been no major acts of terrorism on our soil since 9/11

Certainly we should credit Bush for no major acts of terrorism on our soil since 9/11. Almost as good as Clinton’s record–first attack on the WTC was in early 1993 if memory serves, so that’s over 8 years til 9/11. W is getting close.

honora on January 24, 2007 at 2:50 PM

Clinton not only ignored the first bombing of the WTC and had it treated it as a domestic crime, but he had the FBI shut down the OKC investigation when they “caught” McVey, even though there was plenty of evidence pointing to Iraqi involvement and those men were tied to the ‘93 WTC bombers (See Jayna Davis, The Third Terrorist).
Then there was TWA #800–was the real cause of this crash hidden to save Bill’s re-election campaign in ‘96?
That was here at home, abroad there was Black Hawk Down in Somalia (jihadi killers of our soldiers were trained and armed by OBL), the African Embassy bombings, the Kohbar Towers and the attack on the U.S.S. Cole.
The failure of Clinton to strategically and effectively answer these attacks with his own War on IslamoFascist Terror and his failure to get OBL when he had numerous chances led us directly to 9/11.
Rome burned while Monica fiddled.
9/11 is Clinton’s legacy.

Jen the Neocon on January 24, 2007 at 3:27 PM

Honora conveniently overlooks the incidents in Somalia, Khobar Towers, African Embassy bombings all without a meaningful response. Also forgotten was the astute border guard foiling the Millenium bombing attack (although Clinton tried to take personal credit for it). And that the 9/11 hijackers were already here and training during the Clinton years. If Clinton’s anti-terrorism record was so great why did he send Sandy Burger into the Nat’l Archives to remove and destroy documents on the topic before the 9/11 Commission could get to them?

A lot of the text written about the SoTU address is predicated on the dumbness of the deliverer of the address, he’s not dumb, he has an agenda.
I’m just fed up with the generalities, blank spots and the Chinese puzzle parts needed to try and decipher what that agenda is, factually.

Georges problem is he craps too close to the barn.
Instead of trying to please folks who can never be pleased, like liberals and aliens, he should get back to basics, fulfill his Oath of office and work at taking care of those who should have been THE agenda to begin with.
He just can’t go wrong by his actions falling in line with real Conservatism, keeping the sovereignty and building the entrepreneurship of American citizens the Corporations don’t need help.
George has managed to piss off just about everyone, he could start by getting millions of American citizens off that list and yes that means keeping out aliens and removing them also.
