IMHO, there is no way a complete right wing rep will be elected in a general election. There are too many swing votes that are centrist. Any serious rep candidate will pander to the center and that means finding some neutral positions on the war and other issues. The dems have the same problem.

With Rudy being very left on many social issues, but very right on many others, we reps have to pick our poison and live with it. The worse thing that could happen would be a third party candidtae that panders to the base and bleeds off votes for the only rep candidate that has a chance which leaves us with a dem president that is more left than right.

Can you just see McCain on the Titantic. The ship is sinking, quick let's drown the captain. Every time McCain has a thought from now on, he just needs to let it go. The problem with the GOP right now is they have too many guys playing for the name on the back of the jersey instead of playing for the name on the front-USA. Of course most of the dems quit the team years ago and are begging for a tryout with the opposition......

Ironic since St. John almost single-handedly put the brakes on any conservative legislation since GWB took office. Maybe Cheney should use this opportunity to fire back.

McCain added: “Rumsfeld will go down in history, along with McNamara, as one of the worst secretaries of defense in history.” Donald Rumsfeld served as President Bush’s secretary of defense from January 2001 to December 2006. Robert McNamara was Secretary of Defense during the Vietnam War.

Given that EVERY SINGLE THING that Rumsfeld "wargamed" about both the invasion and aftermath turned out to be WRONG, it seems apparent that Rumsfeld is one of the worst D.S's in history. And you can't hide behind the dodge that , "oh, hindsight's twenty twenty", there was plenty of OPPOSITION to Rumsfelds "SMALLER, SLEEKER FIGHTING FORCE" , before the war began, to ingnore that would be lying by omission like the liberals do. There were people around who said there'd be looting, Rumsfeld didn't think so. There were generals around before the war that said we needed a LARGER FIGHTING FORCE TO INVADE AND OCCUPY A COUNTRY, General Shinseki (sic) comes to mind, again, Rumsfeld didn't think so. There were people who thought that the only thing keeping Iraq from CIVIL WAR all these years was the brutality of Saddam and that once that obstacle was removed, the place would devolve into CIVIL WAR, well guess what? It has! There were people who said that the new Iraqi leader was too close to Al Sadr and that having the Iraqis declare Muqtada's peeps off limits to American Military action, was a non starter, Rumsfeld and Bush gave the guy a vote of confidence and recently White House weasel Tony Snow refused to call Muqtada Al Sadr an enemy of the United States. For once in her misbegotten, perverted, hell bound life, Rosie finally got it right, BUSH SHOULD BE IMPEACHED, but unfortunately STUPIDITY is neither a high crime nor a misdemeanor.

Oh, nice bend over on "global warming " Bush, what type of lube do you prefer?

I remember talking to a couple from Arizona one time and they said about McCain, "next time we're going to elect a Republican". Not that I'm a Republican, I never have been and never will be a Republican because the Republican Party has always had too many "McCains". There are very few times that I ever voted Republican without holding my nose. Ronald Reagan, Rick Santorum and some others I voted for enthusiastically. Now try this---Arlen Specter, need I say more? I don't care what any of the Conservative blowhards say on the radio or TV, I've always been for a third party, what shall we call it, Conservative Party, Right Wing Party, I always liked the sound of Patriot Party or is that taken? Here's a novel idea, Constitution Party, the venal, blood-sucking politicians in Washington wouldn't have any idea what that stood for though.

This is all a brilliant strategy formulated by Karl Rove long ago. Think about it. Why NOT blame EVERYTHING on the vice-president from Wyoming? There is zero collateral damage. Wyoming has 3 votes in the electorial college. No state has fewer. The state's demographics consist of (roughly) 400,000 rural, WASP residents in a vast expanse of 100,000 square miles of nothingness (federal reserves like Yellowstone aside). Maybe half of those residents actually vote. When they do, they ALWAYS vote Republican (Teton county excepted). In the red vs. blue scheme of things, only Utah is more red than Wyoming. It is absolute genius to have at least one Wyoming native SOMEWHERE in the administration to serve as scape goat. Wish I'd thought of it. Clever indeed.

this election cycle promises to be the most annoying, overhyped, overexposed campaign in history

Yeah, but I still hope Bobby J. wipes the floor with Blanco's ass.
I'd vote for Tancredo, but I'd rather vote for Santorum.

Is McCain actually going to get the nomination?

I don't actually think so, I think his age will ultimately be an issue, but I have been shocked lately at election results. Will the conservatives vote for Tancredo? Will he be gone by the primary? Will conservative just stay home on primary day(s) because they are so disgusted with the RINOs, and with Bush's second term?

It's so far away, and this election cycle promises to be the most annoying, overhyped, overexposed campaign in history. People are going to get real sick of election coverage.

I respect him. I thank him for his service. I will not vote for him. Too many cigars in too many Beltway backrooms. Sorry John but I do not want my party to follow you down the path you have chosen.

U.S. forces are on the verge of defeat
Has McCain said that? Or has Roger Simon conflated McCain quotes with Roger Simon's opinion?
Horrible writing.

Sometimes it feels good to just vent rather than post a thoughtful response or try to be clever.

So: Just bite me McCain.

Ah, that feels good.

The evil Cheney, evil genius. It's amazing how he single handedely turned vice president from a meaningless figurehead position into the most powerful office in the world. Good thing we have John McCain to keep us informed.

If McCain does happen to win in '08, will he be credited as the first 3rd party candidate?

Who will be ultimately blamed for destroying the GOP, Bush, or McCain (should he win)?
