[...] Ethics violations…the MSM? Get outta here! The AP isn’t exactly a beacon of ethical journalism, either. Ergo, when the comPost and AP can’t get excited about your troopbashing story, that’s a pretty good tipoff that said story is a steaming pile of bovine feces. [...]

[...] STEP THREE: Go to one of the mosques in the AP story that you’re trying to debunk. Excellent! This is way better than I would have thought, even though the mosque you went to was firebombed and had a hole from an RPG in its dome. But never mind that, let’s keep rollin’ along.
[...] This photo was taken from another angle during the Army’s follow-up incident reporting. They weren’t hiding anything, it’s just the angle they happened to snap of the mosque that the AP reported destroyed that’s still standing. We showed the hole. That’s the angle we happened to capture of the mosque that the AP reported destroyed that’s still standing. The hole is irrelevant to the AP story. But I’ll cut the Sadly, No! folks some slack–there are too many details in this story to master if you just stick to the surface and if you’re only looking for angles to attack us, as opposed to looking objectively at whether the AP got the story right or wrong.
[...] After the proven-false “Burning Six” story and the misadventures of the non-existent Jamil Hussein*, I find it difficult to dispute Bryan’s contentions.
At risk of sounding repetitive, with all the resources the wire services posses you folks here and your somewhat limited crew out-report them on most every war issue just about every day of the week.

The intentional generation then dissemination of knowingly bad information by AP is downright scandalous and yet they only people out there on their trail is you folks. Great work by all and spread the word on the blogs.

BEST YET!!! Congrats MM & B.

If I only had the money to run this piece in every newspaper in America, every TV news channel in the top 100 cities, and #1 on all searches for Iraq.
But, I'll be happy if I hear about this anywhere else , not including the blogosphere.
I can hope.
Everyone, PLEASE Digg this, and submit it everywhere you can.

They will ignore you. The story is out, that is all they care about. Like any lie from the left, it serves its purpose even after it is exposed. The retraction is slow and slight, by then the damage is done...mission accomplished.
A great job, maybe after a couple more dozen of these, they will be more careful and cover their tracks better. Don't count on them changing, count on them being more conniving.

Wow, Michelle you've taken the addage "If you want anything done right you gotta do it yourself" to the next level! I mean! Thanks for your outstanding courage and perseverence. You are one tough cookie, er or is that FIRECRACKER! The MSM are trying to marginalize your impact here, but to no avail. I'm senseing just the opposite. We are at a crucial time in the war. We can't look for recognition from the doomsday naysayers. We need to stabilize Iraq and move on. I hope the Presidents plan has alot of teeth!

"Lt. Col Miska pointed out the key to the problem. Our journalists now seem willing to report rumors as actual facts, without checking them out. Is this a new phenomenon? It seems like it. But having not paid much attention to the media pre-9/11, I’ve got nothing to compare it to."

The distinction depends on the political orientation of the target of the "rumor." The media can still display remarkable restraint when it perceives the need for it: recall, for example, how Newsweek had the Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinsky story long before Matt Drudge, but spiked it. Consider also how most media are still looking up at the ceiling and whistling about the more recent revelations about Sandy Berger.

It will be most interesting to see how the "Don't ask, don't tell" medai policy regarding Hillary will take effect in the 2008 election, especially given that most of the Clinton-era scandals were hers.

"Fake but accurate" and "It could be true" are source/evidentiary standards applied selectively to people the media don't like (e.g., Republicans in general and George Bush in particular, as well as the U.S. armed forces). But if you're in their good graces, they can still demonstrate some degree of circumspection.

How embarrassing for the AP and how insightful into the motives of people "reporting" from Iraq.
Somehow even tho now completely and thoroughly debunked as a source and a story, we wont see any response from the AP.
SHAME ON THEM!

Centcom needs to recognize and accept that the media is working for the enemy.

Centcom needs to peel off a half dozen guys who's ONLY JOB is to VERY QUICKLY go to the site of a suspect story and completely document the situation with video, stills, GPS coordinates, interviews, pictures of fresh graves, proof of date(pics of current newspapers in every shot) etc.
