Mel “Amnesty” Martinez elected RNC chairman

The WashTimes has been running goofy articles all week pretending that the RNC rebels who were trying to block him had a ghost of a chance, and that Michael Steele might emerge as a compromise candidate. I said on Tuesday it was futile, and guess what? It was futile. The vote was secret ballot, but according to senior GOP officials, all but 20 delegates were committed to Martinez.

He promised a blogger in an interview yesterday that he wouldn’t use the chairmanship to push his own personal political agenda. Which isn’t worth much: when it comes to this issue, he’s a notorious liar.

Money quote from today’s acceptance speech:

To be the Party of the future means that we also have to be a party that opens the door wide-open so that all Americans feel welcome. There are too many Americans who do not understand that the principles of Abraham Lincoln,Teddy Roosevelt, and Ronald Reagan speak to their hopes, their dreams, and their aspirations. I will take the message of our Party to all Americans.

That leaves us with a pro-amnesty president, a pro-amnesty party chairman, and a likely pro-amnesty presidential nominee in ‘08 in the figure of St. John of Tucson. Why, it’s enough to make a man consider voting for Tanc. If, that is, his candidacy wasn’t such a foolhardy pursuit.

“opens the door wide-open”

and so eloquent!

So, everyone’s writing off Newt?

Today keeps getting more and more depressing.

bernzright777 on January 19, 2007 at 2:42 PM

“So, everyone’s writing off Newt?”

If you’re talking about immigration, he hasn’t had much to say. He might be better than the others by default, but not saying anything clear on the topic is usually a bad sign.

Giulliani has a bad record on illegal immigration, but not one quite so vividly incapsulated in something like a Senate voting record, as with the others. Since he’s got a probelm as it is with his social liberalism and…complicated personal history, I suppose he could revise his position on immigration (”in a post-9/11 world, I realize…”) to win over some otherwise resistant convservatives.

The imagination is a wonderful thing…

Alex K on January 19, 2007 at 2:47 PM

Ugh!

Looks like Martinez likes to throw out a little carne of the rojo variety. Makes me glad I’m not actually a Republican, though.

Ick. This is depressing.

I’ll end up backing Tran, until he goes down in flames at the RNC. I have hopes that in backing him, we can make the other candidates pull their heads out.

Yeah… I’m being stupidly optimistic.

No hidden agenda there.

Bienvenido a la Unión Norteamericana Unida

I will stand behind Tancredo or Newt because they are my only hope for my children to inherit a USA as we know it now.

Don’t these people have any fear of the Ballot Box anymore ? The RNC has received their last dollar from me. I will support individual candidates but not the RNC.

DoctorDentons on January 19, 2007 at 2:56 PM

Where’s Grebrook to tell us that it doesn’t matter what we do, the Democrats are going to shove amnesty down our throats and sign up a gajillion voters and be the majority party 4EVER!

I will take the message of our Party to all Americans.

including all the “Americans” south of the border.

If I was a Canuck, I’d feel left out..

Oh, wait, the Non-existent NAU that exists only in the windmills of some folks minds will address that soon enough, I reckun.

Have a nice day and enjoy the ride, folks.

The RNC hasn’t gotten one thin dime from me since El Presidente Jorge announced his position on immigration. Martinez’s “selection” as head of the RNC has convinced me of the wisdom of my decision.

I’ll vote for Newt if he runs, if not my vote will to Tancredo.

If the republicans think they got spanked this last election, they just need to keep doing what they are doing and they will get a whooping the next.

The RNC has received their last dollar from me. I will support individual candidates but not the RNC.

The republican party has betrayed its supporters. I can no longer in good faith support them as a whole. Like several other posters, I will be supporting individual candidates who stand for what the Republican party used to stand for.

PinkyBigglesworth on January 19, 2007 at 3:36 PM

Re: Newt at AEI and NRO.

He doesn’t say much at AEI. Remember, everyone claims to be for tougher enforcement. See the NRO article where Newt uses Hillary and Dean’s pro-enforcement words against them, knowing full well they want amnesty and an immigration increase only.

Everyone pretends to be against illegality, that’s why the crux is: how much immigration do they want, and based on what criteria?

The Newt article on NRO is pretty good. He obviously sounds more serious about enforcement and he at least acknowledges that mass unskilled labor is an economic detriment, not a boon.

But because he agrees to a guest-worker program, that doesn’t necessarily make his position any different from the Senate bill. His position on amnesty is certainly better, but that’s less important than future immigration levels. He has to address the numbers, the ability to end the guests’ stay, and the sectors of the economy that are going to get this cheap labor (ie, is the guest labor actually good for the country, or just good for employers)?

But by far the best statement from a leading candidate.

Alex K on January 19, 2007 at 3:38 PM

Gregor on January 19, 2007 at 3:26 PM

Although I usually consider myself a political junkie, to be honest Gregor I haven’t had much enthusiasm to keep up with the potential candidates for the GOP in 08′.

I guess the fatigue from last years election just hasn’t left me yet. So, other than what I sometimes read here about Tancredo, I haven’t done much research on him and really don’t know his positions on key issues.

Besides, it’s still a little early in the process to get too excited and nobody I have looked at so far is a real conservative anyway. That’s the gist of my “Hold my nose” comment.

Tancredo may be great. I just don’t know enough yet.

There are too many Americans who do not understand that the principles of Abraham Lincoln,Teddy Roosevelt, and Ronald Reagan speak to their hopes, their dreams, and their aspirations.

- Mel Martinez, RNC Chairman Acceptance Speech, Jan 19, 2007

Let’s call him on that ….

The effort to keep our citizenship divided against itself by the use of the hyphen and along the lines of national origin is certain to a breed of spirit of bitterness and prejudice and dislike between great bodies of our citizens. If some citizens band together as German-Americans or Irish-Americans, then after a while others are certain to band together as English-Americans or Scandinavian-Americans, and every such banding together, every attempt to make for political purposes a German-American alliance or a Scandinavian-American alliance, means down at the bottom an effort against the interest of straight-out American citizenship, an effort to bring our nation the bitter Old World rivalries and jealousies and hatreds.

Theodore Roosevelt, Jun 1, 1918 (in a Memorial Day Speech), The Washington Post (p.1)

Let us say to th immigrant not that we hope he will learn English, but that he has got to learn it. Let the immigrant who does not learn it go back. He has got to consider the interest of the United States or he should not stay here. He must be made to see that his opportunities in this country depend on his knowing English and observing American standards. The employer cannot be permitted to regard him only as an industrial asset.

We must in every way possible encourage the immigrant to rise, help him up, give him a chance to help himself. If we try to carry him he may well prove hot well worth carrying. We must in turn insist upon his showing the same standard of fealty to this country and join with us in raising the level of our common American citizenship.

If I could I would have the kind of restriction which would not allow any immigrant to come here unless I was content that his grandchildren would be fellow-citizens of my grandchildren. They will not be so if he lives in a boarding house at $2.50 per month with ten other boarders and contracts tuberculosis and contributes to the next generation a body of citizens inferior not only morally and spiritually but also physically.

What sort of citizens do Hispanics become? Even after they are naturalized, they remain emotionally attached to their homelands. In a poll taken by the Pew Hispanic Center, only 33 percent of Hispanic-American citizens said they considered themselves first or only American. Forty-four percent still called themselves their original, pre-immigration nationality (Mexican, Salvadoran, etc.), and another 22 percent said they were first or only “Latino or Hispanic.” When citizens and non-citizens of Mexican origin are taken together, 55 percent consider themselves Mexican, 25 percent Latino or Hispanic, and only 18 percent American.

Errr … you might want to think that.

Romney is looking like he’s not the person we thought he was. Read his stance on immigration on his website. He’s for INCREASING legal immigration and he’s for a guest worker program. He likes to play with his words like Bush does, to make it seem like he’s for tough policies.

Gingrich and Tancredo are the only two that I could possibly support. If an immigration reform deform and guest worker permanent resident/future amnestied citizen bill passes and we have McCain or any other open-borders advocate at the helm, I am through with the Republican party forever.

I won’t vote for McCain or anyone remotely like him on immigration.

tommy1 on January 19, 2007 at 5:40 PM

Why do conservatives always choose America haters as their leaders. W. Bush, your new chairman, Delay, Lott, Hastert. I don’t get it. Bush hates the constitution. This new guy hates American sovreignty. Lott hated black people. Delay hated the rule of law. Hastert hated children (maybe he just loved pedophiles more). What’s with you guys? I knew you all hate hate America and the rule of law, but this is rediculous. LONG LIVE THE DEMOCRATS!!!

shackler on January 19, 2007 at 5:40 PM

I don’t think there’s any chance in Hell that McCain wins the nomination. He’d be more likely to win the Democratic nomination than the Republican. There are just far too many conservatives who dislike him.

I really believe it’s a four man race.

Giuliani, Tancredo, Gingrich, and Romney

Giuliani is a Bush clone in my opinion, and Romney’s stock is falling fast and will most likely continue.

That leaves Gingrich or Tancredo.

ROFL! Thanks for the laugh Shackler. Or should I say … “Stiffler?”

It’s always entertaining to be reminded of how liberals think – or fail to think.

“[W]e also have to be a party that opens the door wide-open…”

Gee Mel, why not just do away with political parties altogether? Then we’ll have the biggest tent ever!

ohhh… my aching head.

Bucking a Presidents agenda is a tough thing thing to do.

I suppose the worse he acts the easier it will be to elect a President who’s actions will be genuine in regards to our guarantee of national sovereignty.

This President should realize he’s political capital is in the outhouse, the bottom of the outhouse.
That’s what happens when you make the rounds and piss everyone off and he’s immigration stance has done exactly that.

Bush was inaugurated wearing his conservative republican mask. But as time went on, my colleagues and I were able to investigate further into this mystery and what we found in this old white house was the remains of a republican party and when we confronted old man Bush with the evidence we took off his mask (in a scooby doo moment) and found….

A RINO or moderate republican at best.

That’s right sheriff, old man Bush is really McCain in disguise!

“And I’d have gotten away with it if it hadn’t been for those darn kids on the blogs and that darn dog!”

shackler,

Why do conservatives always choose America haters as their leaders. W. Bush, your new chairman, Delay, Lott, Hastert. I don’t get it. Bush hates the constitution. This new guy hates American sovreignty. Lott hated black people. Delay hated the rule of law. Hastert hated children (maybe he just loved pedophiles more). What’s with you guys? I knew you all hate hate America and the rule of law, but this is rediculous. LONG LIVE THE DEMOCRATS!!!

This coming from a guy who supports the party of the one and only former Klansman to be sitting as President Pro Tempore of the Senate in US history and the party of “Red Ted” Kennedy. Furthermore, where Martinez might “hate” American sovereignty, almost every Democrat does likewise.

My uncle, who lives in Austin, says they’ve been getting some ice and snow.

Yes we have. 300 accidents alone the 1st afternoon. We’re not only a little slice of heavenly marxism in the heart of Texas, we’re also home to a lot of people that shouldn’t be allowed to ride in cars, much less drive them.

As far as ‘global warming goes’…I do believe if I hear that phrase in my presence, someone is getting an icescraper enema.

Why, it’s enough to make a man consider voting for Tanc.

If the lefties can put up an America destroyer, we can put up an America protector.

Inductivist has been crunching some numbers and says that “Mexicans have the worst values in the world.” They also rank low in the Inductivist’s “Bad Behavior Index.

Here is another Inductivist post about Miami. Like most Inductivist posts, it is short post so I’ve excerpted it completely. Forgive me:

Governor Jeb Bush got huffy the other day when Tom Tancredo said that Miami is like a Third World country. Bush and other Florida lawmakers responded with the usual doublespeak, using words like “hospitality” and “vibrant.”

Like always, we must ignore what the politicians say, and must rely on data. According to the Census, here is how Miami compares to the rest of the country:

Percent Hispanic
Miami 65.8
USA 14.1

Percent speaking something other than English at home
Miami 74.6
USA 17.9

Percent of people ages 25+ with high school degree
Miami 52.7
USA 80.4

Homeownership rate
Miami 34.9
USA 66.2

Percent poor
Miami 28.5
USA 12.

Let’s see: the city is a place where most people are Hispanic, Spanish-speaking, 1/2 never finished high school, few own homes, and many are poor. Sounds like the Third World to me. And it’s coming to your neighborhood next.

Cubans are generally quite a bit better off than Mexicans, so I found the results surprising.

Sorry, that last sentence was my own:

Cubans are generally quite a bit better off than Mexicans, so I found the results surprising.

It’s time to show the RNC and GOP that they aren’t going to get elected / reelected until they secure the border and enforce our nations laws against hiring illegal aliens. No Amnesty, no NAFTA superhighway to citizenship.

About 80% of the voting aged US citizens want the border secured. We can actually make the border both the Republican and Democratic party’s stumbling block.
