Kind of a letdown. Colby was laying the irony on with a trowel and O’R didn’t offer so much as a courtesy laugh. Both sides seemed to take it in the spirit of good fun, though, which was refreshing.
O’Reilly’s on Colbert’s show tonight at 11:30 on Comedy Central. We’ll have the clip right here as an update a little after midnight.

He scared him! He wondered if he was serious…
“WHO ARE YOU??”
Mazztek on January 18, 2007 at 9:33 PM
I thought it was hilarious particularly when the crew started laughing.

ho-hum….

Colbert can be pretty funny when he’s reading his script on a set, but he’s not really that good when he’s speaking extemporaneously.
O’Reilly isn’t funny and doesn’t seem to know how to toss Colbert softballs to knock out of the park. This was a formula for a waste of air time.
cmay on January 18, 2007 at 9:42 PM
I thought it was good but then again I wasn’t expecting anything! It was good clean fun!

Since I am 3/4 Irish. Should I be offended by some of the comments?
If so who do I sue and where is the money train?

Colbert has always been funny… O’Reilly has not
Ugly on January 18, 2007 at 9:56 PM
Colbert might be funny if he used the “off” switch once in a while. If I thought he could be normal for a few minutes the schtick would be funnier.
Anwyn on January 18, 2007 at 10:07 PM
It was a funny segment. O’Reilly (who is typically thin-skinned) was definitely on his “nicer” side. I can’t wait to see him on the Colbert Report. As for why the critics love Colbert and not Mr. O; it’s obviously because Colbert mocks everything Bill stands for. I think Bill knows that.
thedecider on January 18, 2007 at 10:37 PM
Colbert isn’t as funny without a studio audience. I’m putting my money on the latter appearance. It won’t disappoint.
freakagriep on January 18, 2007 at 10:42 PM
that was the most boring interviews ever. Colbert should be sent to Iraq, as he could put the enemy to sleep for us, so we could drag their sleeping bodies away.
retired on January 18, 2007 at 10:54 PM
Like Jim Carrey turned “off”, Colbert would be unfunny turned off, yes.
My point was Colbert had to deal with the dryness of O’Reilly without a laugh-track and still made me laugh. And he made O’Reilly as well.
I’m betting O’Reilly wanted Colbert to stay in character.

Nice way to put it. Very true.
tikvah on January 18, 2007 at 11:00 PM
…made O’Reilly laugh…
I meant…. :P
Ugly on January 18, 2007 at 11:01 PM
my god, that was just annoying.
I mean alot of the time O’Reilly can be annoying (I agree with his anti-child-predator stuff, but his opinions on Foreign Policy often seem to be at odds with himself.)
But Steven Colbert…. GAGH!
Clearly there’s a reason why the only thing I watch anymore on Comedy Central are the standups and Southpark.
Stephen Colbert = “TEH LAME”.
(And yes, I clearly am a fan of onomatopoeia.)
Jones Zemkophill on January 18, 2007 at 11:06 PM
It was humorous and light hearted. The crew even laughed in the background a couple times. It wasn’t anything like when Letterman interviewed O’Reilly which was an attack more than a interview. The Oprah interview was actually well done. Has O’Reilly been on the View?
Yakko77 on January 18, 2007 at 11:19 PM
Colbert would make a SPLENDID congressman — except if he WAS a congressmen, I might have to start taking them seriously.
CyberCipher on January 18, 2007 at 11:49 PM
O’Reilly on Colbert’s show was actually funnier than Colbert. I’m not a big fan of O’Reilly, but he comported himself very well. I was expecting a trainwreck.
Matticus Finch on January 18, 2007 at 11:57 PM
No, not really.
I tuned to Colbert’s show because my local news was over. His “bits” were lame, possibly with the exception of the Bollywood dispute segment…. no not really. That was lame too.
and his O’Reilly Interview was weak. I was excpecting somthing a bit more…either outrageous, or humorous.
The most disturbing thing was that O’Reilly was actually funny in his verbal parrys.
But no, I’ll not be a repeat customer for Colbert. I’m more of a Conan O’Brien fan anyway. (Now he’s funny. even when I disagree he makes me laugh.)
Jones Zemkophill on January 19, 2007 at 12:35 AM
I thought O’Reilly was alot funnier than Colbert was. Colbert was trying hard, but O’Reilly was just having fun and it showed. He just slipped in subtle material like starting an interview with “I talked to your third grade teacher…” and the crack at the end about being on a 4:30 AM was classic.

“Chris Matthews…with his pro-Potato agenda…”
Come on, that was pretty funny.

Colbert “If you’re an act, then what am I?”
Entelechy on January 19, 2007 at 1:16 AM
I thought Colbert was very funny, and in a classy way. He did not denegrate O’Rilley with crude insult, he use satire very effectively. I thoroughly enjoyed the piece and wish Hot Air would post more of it.
After reading the posts above it makes me wonder if we were watching the same video. I saw Satire that was beautifully executed in a humorous manner and Colbert was not confrontational or demeaning to O’Riley.
Excellent video. More Please!

Co-”bert” was a frighted B1TCH. He used comedy to deflect every question. It was pretty sad and all the stoning losers got a real kick out of this waste of O’Reilly’s time. I however don’t have time to fritter away. Not me Co-”bert”.
x95b10 on January 19, 2007 at 3:25 AM
Okay, O’Rielly hosting Colbert was a little on the dry side (and I usually LIKE dry. Go figure) but I laughed myself silly watching the reverse. O’Rielly took a minute to warm up, but once he got going the two were just bouncing off eachother. Brian Williams is Hugo Chavez. Hah!
Militant Bibliophile on January 19, 2007 at 3:27 AM
I’m not really a fan of O’Reilly’s show because I don’t like shout fests. But, give the guy a break, he’s not a comedian. I think he was intentionally playing the straight man for Colbert.
BirdFLU on January 19, 2007 at 4:53 AM
I wonder if O’Reilly caught the ‘the man is a sexual predator, you have no idea what that’s like’ insult before they sat down. It sounds like some people in the audience understood it. Kind of a cheap shot even if it is true. Falafel… LOL
For the record, I think John Stewart is a jackass. I can’t believe how many people I run into that think his show is news. Of course, it’s not far off from regular MSM.
arteest on January 19, 2007 at 5:25 AM
I didn’t really have any expectations – so maybe that’s why I found both clips kind of funny.
Candy Slice on January 19, 2007 at 7:00 AM
I watched SC on BOR last night, and I thought it was boring. SC seemed to try to play it so straight, it was awkward. The sad part is that there are people who actually watch SC (I do not) for their news, along with jon stewart. Not that I watch BOR for mine, but at least he crusades for some correct things. When was the last time you heard the MSM calling for Jessica’s law?

All I have to say is that this took ‘Malkins’ on both sides.

Eh, not bad. Could have been better, but it could of been worse. Middle of the road. They played it safe.
vcferlita on January 19, 2007 at 8:34 AM
They definitely played it safe which I guess was okay. I would like to see what the offscreen discussions were like and what their writers and crews had to say.
JaHerer22 on January 19, 2007 at 9:16 AM
O’Reiley is clueless and unfunny (and boorish). Colbert is sophomoric. What would anyone except except for a snooze-fest that was painful to watch?
Neo on January 19, 2007 at 9:21 AM
Did anyone else notice that it was the first time I have seen Colbert introduce a guest who was not sitting at the table? Colbert always runs out to the interview table like the applause was for him.
I mean, that’s one of those funny things he does. But here he let Bill come out to the applause.
Hmmm…wonder if Bill insisted on that.
Rightwingsparkle on January 19, 2007 at 12:04 PM
Do you people not understand the Irish sense of humor? I’m married to an Irishman, and O’Reilly exhibited the classic droll wit that I’ve come to know so well. I thought he comported himself quite well, and found his comebacks while on SC’s show quite humorous. Colbert tries to channel Robin Williams, but his lack of restraint and obvious disdain for O’R gets in the way.
Veritas on January 19, 2007 at 12:09 PM
Colbert using comedy? Odd for a “comedian” whose show is on “comedy” central.
I have to say i was surprised at how benign the encounters were, when stewart and O’Reilly met their mutual disdain was much more evident…nevertheless, both delivered good lines, and you do have to hand it to O’reiily for appearing on the show, its not exactly a friendly environment. He was a good sport.
crr6 on January 19, 2007 at 12:41 PM
I think they were both playing to their audiences. They provided entertainment.
There was no Trump/Rosie flame throwing.
Crocket838 on January 19, 2007 at 7:03 PM
Our country loves Colbert.
But it needs O’Reilly.

the 30% off sticker gag was pretty funny
daveintexas on January 20, 2007 at 10:59 AM
OMG Colbert is an absolute riot! I love O’Reilly, but I’m sure he would be the first to admit that he’s no comedian. I live overseas and unfortunately don’t get much exposure to Colbert, but I get The Factor on Fox.
This was good clean fun. Colbert did a great job of poking fun and O’Reilly did a great job as straight man. I think these guys are probably pretty good friends, or certainly could be.
Anyone that reads too much into this exchange just doesn’t get it. They’re just having fun, there’s animosity between these two class acts.
