The obligatory “Carter wanted leniency for a Nazi” post

I saw it this morning and thought it was stupid, then Drudge picked it up and now people are sending us the link. So, fine. Here you go.

Does anyone seriously believe Jimmy Carter is pro-Nazi, or at least so anti-Israel that he’d go to bat for an SS guard for political reasons? Soft-hearted, reactionary left-wing dork who views the Israeli/Palestinian conflict through a simplistic colonialist prism? Yes. Nazi sympathizer? No.

But I’m sure most of our readers will disagree. The money passage:

An entry in the book for October 10, 1943 registered the shooting death of Max Oschorn, a French Jewish prisoner. His murderer was also recorded: SS guard Martin Bartesch. “It was a most chilling document,” Sher recalled…

“One day, in the fall of ’87, my secretary walks in and gives me a letter with a Georgia return address reading ‘Jimmy Carter.’ I assumed it was a prank from some old college buddies, but it wasn’t. It was the original copy of the letter Bartesch’s daughter sent to Carter, after Bartash [sic] had already been deported…

“On the upper corner of the letter was a note signed by Jimmy Carter saying that in cases such as this, he wanted ‘special consideration for the family for humanitarian reasons.’

“I didn’t respond to the letter – the case was already over and he was out of the country – but it always stuck in my craw. A former president who didn’t do what I would expect him to do - with a full staff at his disposal – to find out the facts before he took up the side of this person. But I wasn’t going to pick a fight with a former president. We had enough on our plate.”

Flame on!

Speaking of pardons, how about that Bush and his not-pardoning-the-border-patrol-agents, huh? What a scumbag.

Alex K on January 17, 2007 at 5:26 PM

I don’t see how the man finds his way to the kitchen with those big, moral blinders on.

SWLiP on January 17, 2007 at 5:27 PM

Jimmy wanted to build them a house

Wade on January 17, 2007 at 5:27 PM

I’m still peeved about the freaking Panama Canal.

Candy Slice on January 17, 2007 at 5:31 PM

Mmmmmm…tasty.

But not a Nazi sympathizer. Sometimes the simplest answer is the correct one. (Occams razor)

dalewalt on January 17, 2007 at 5:33 PM

So, fine. Here you go.

I hope you’re all happy. See what you made me do? :)

sandberg on January 17, 2007 at 5:40 PM

Yeah, clearly Carter is the moral equivalent of Hitler.

But deep down, aren’t we all?

Absolutely Alex. Bush is indeed a scumbag. Not to mention the fact that he just BENT OVER, GRABBED HIS ANKLES, AND TOOK IT UP THE KEYSTER ON THE WIRETAPPING ISSUE, turning it over to FISA, like the liberals demanded. Bush F-ing SUCKS. Oh, but he did find time to pardon FIVE DRUG DEALERS by the way. Bush Sucks.

What a red herring of an argument. Jimmy Carter doesn’t have to be “Pro-Nazi” to be a stupid Anti-American DANGEROUS liberal. That’s what he IS. His reasons for going to bat for the NAZI are immaterial, the fact that this scum sucking pig did it, is enough.

Soothsayer on January 17, 2007 at 5:45 PM

Just read the article. Telling. Very telling.

Is Jimmy Carter suffering from liberal guilt after the Camp David accords?

budorob on January 17, 2007 at 5:51 PM

Love the taste of steak tartare!

In isolation, it just looks like buffoonery, but in context (such as “Peace not Apartheid”) it is part of an exceptionally disturbing pattern of behaviour. If we can get him on something true but stupid, then it isn’t stupid. No “fake but accurate” crap, but I’ll take an Al Capone tax-evasion equivalent.

Soothsayer needs to lighten up on his rhetoric and caps usage, but he’s right on both bush and Carter.

libertarianuberalles on January 17, 2007 at 5:52 PM

(quavering outraged voice) “But, but, he won the Nobel Peace Prize! That excuses anything! The man is a saint! A saaaiiint!!!

Sorry, I just figured I’d throw that in to save us from enduring another troll-produced 20,000-word essay. (Not that anybody reads those anyway.) Seriously, though, there are plenty of legitimate reasons to despise Carter–which is why it’s been turning into “Carter-Bashing Week” around here, which is both awesome and well-deserved. But I don’t personally consider being a Nazi sympathizer to be one of them.

I want Carthitler (Cartler?) photoshops!

liberrocky on January 17, 2007 at 5:58 PM

You may disagree with the President, but he is not a scumbag, and if you want to call him that then go over to Kos or DU and have yourself a we hate Bush circle jerk with the other a**holes.

Once a humanitarian, always a humanitarian…

The moodometer is malfunctioning today.

Do you believe he’d go to bat for an Israeli soldier in similar circumstances?

Me neither.

As another poster said above, in isolation it’s nothing, but in context of many other things he’s said and written, it is somewhat disturbing. And one need not be pro-Nazi to be anti-semetic.

Carter and the UN connection, it explains it all……

We had just barred Kurt Waldheim – he was then president of Austria and former head of the United Nations – from entering the U.S. because of his Nazi past

PinkyBigglesworth on January 17, 2007 at 6:58 PM

Maybe if Jimmy Carter wore a skirt….

Attila (Pillage Idiot) on January 17, 2007 at 6:59 PM

Dye his hair black and put a funny mustache on him and you’ve got a look-a-like!

Sieg heil jimma, sieg heil

Kini on January 17, 2007 at 7:13 PM

Let’s all sing the Jimmy Carter song….

…..if I only had a brain…….

conservativecaveman on January 17, 2007 at 8:30 PM

We don’t need to call Carter anything, look at his record recently. That will tell you where his sympathy lies.

right2bright on January 17, 2007 at 8:48 PM

Within our lifetimes Panama will end up selling the canal for several $Trillion$. Probably to the Chinese or Chavez. Jimmy Carter… real estate guru.

Griz on January 17, 2007 at 11:38 PM

I’d like to see a smoking gun before I bite into this. No more rotten apples please. They’re squishy and gross.

One Angry Christian on January 18, 2007 at 9:27 AM

One thing I do know is he is NOT a humanitarian, his actions are NOT consistent. A true humanitarian wouldn’t side with palestinians and call their missiles ok (too tired to look up what he said exactly but you get the gist).

So hmm..what other explanation is it? He has chosen to twist his view to be on the wrong side of the coin.

Highrise on January 18, 2007 at 2:54 PM

Whoa. One smoking gun, coming right up?

Kerning looks right to me…

Slublog on January 18, 2007 at 3:45 PM

I had no doubt the story was true. But so what, really?

Allahpundit on January 18, 2007 at 3:47 PM

I actually did have some doubts about the story. I don’t like Carter, but I figured he wasn’t dumb enough to go to bat for a Nazi.

You’re right, though. In the end, it doesn’t matter all that much.

But it is tasty.
