[...] I guess I shouldn’t be surprised when bloggers get upset about a private trying to provide the world with his view of the war. They just can’t leave their parents’ basements long enough to see what’s happening. It’s not like Brian from Hotair and Michelle Malkin ever spent a night in Iraq. I’m almost certain that Michael Yon does his dispatches from the comfort of a Marriott Hotel in West Palm Beach Florida. Don’t even get me started on the other “citizen journalists” who take trips to the spa and call it a tour in Iraq. Their reports are just as big a hoax as the Moon Landing.
[...] More (Bryan): I know that for our friends on the left there’s a mental block associated with all claims coming from the administration regarding Iranian meddling in Iraq, but Michelle and I heard on the ground in Baghdad, from a Lt Col in intelligence, that Iran has ramped up its support for the militias and insurgents in the past year to 18 months. It’s hard to say just how much of a contribution to the total violence the Iranians are making, but it’s likely significant, both in arms and training. When you have an “uninterrupted flow of weapons” coming in from Iran to Iraq and getting into the hands of the anti-US/anti-Iraq forces, you have a major problem. [...]

I keep hearing about how Bush arrogance has made americans more hated around the world. Seriously, give me examples of arrogance. People say this and all of a sudden it becomes fact, when in reality there is no truth to it. I need some examples.

<blockquote>Absolutely fantastic post. A well-written account of a truly mind-bending experience, I’m sure. I know I am not speaking only for myself when I say thank you and MM for putting yourselves in harm’s way in order to bring us this insightful look at our involvement in Iraq.

I agree with most of your points, but #7 especially. I believe our affluence has led us to expect instant gratification, and in this case, that is just not going to happen.

Again, thank you both, and everyone who helped to bring us this fresh look at Iraq and our role in the Middle East.

We can win in Iraq. But we need to win in the US first.

I was in Iraq during the initial invasion in 2003 and again in 2005-2006. This post has to be the best by anyone in the "media" except maybe Michael Yon.

Way to speak truth to power!

[...] As I said in my first post since returning from Iraq, calling the situation there a “civil war” misunderstands and oversimplifies the conflict there. We’ve all seen the movie Mad Max, right? Iraq is something like that–chaotic and hyper violent in places, but the world of that film isn’t orderly enough to be called a civil war. Well, parts of Baghdad are a lot like that film. Parts aren’t. Most of the violence is confined to areas where the Sunni and Shia mix, along with insurgent Haifa Street. The rest of Baghdad, the vast majority in fact, isn’t terribly violent unless the insurgents or terrorists mount attacks there to draw in US forces and press coverage. [...]

The difference is, Limerick; Sistani hasn't and very likely never would, give such an order and I think the Colonel realizes it. It was a kind of 'walking over hot coals...' comment.
Sistani IS the major hope for stability, but he'll never be our dearest friend. He also can very well draw power away from the Iranian mulahs and that is why they back 'Mooky'. It is also why we cannot afford to leave the Pudgy One running around loose any longer; Sistani is wearing a target as long as Mooky lives.

Sistani is certainly not a great choice, but he is all we have to bank on.
