Report: Castro’s life endangered by … shoddy Cuban health care

posted at 10:35 pm on January 16, 2007 by Allahpundit

The irony, so sweet. So syrupy sweet.

Cuban leader Fidel Castro has long prided himself on Cuba’s doctors and free public health care system, but that system seems to have let him down after he fell ill in July , U.S.-based doctors said on Tuesday.

Based on a report in Tuesday’s edition of Spain’s El Pais newspaper, the doctors — who have no first-hand knowledge of Castro’s condition — said Castro had received questionable or even botched care at the hands of health experts on his communist-ruled island…

Gerson and Dr. Meyer Solny, a veteran gastrointestinal expert at New York Presbyterian Hospital and the Weill Cornell College of Medicine, said Castro’s doctors erred by seeking to avoid a colostomy — or opening in the abdomen to get rid of stool — after an initial operation to remove part of his large intestine.

“They took a chance, which was probably not the best judgment under the circumstances,” Gerson said.

Quoth Gerson: “Too bad they didn’t send him to Miami for surgery.”

Unpossible! The Cuban health care system is a model for the whole western hemisphere! Bushco propaganda and lies!

Heh? Wha…?

Sorry about that. I was channeling DU for minute there.

Spiny Norman on January 16, 2007 at 10:41 PM

My friend, that picture you used in the cover page would make a really screwed caption contest.

Anyway, in http://www.therealcuba.com there’s a really disturbing image of the healthcare in Cuba. Makes me sick to the stomach to believe the libs believe this to be great, awesome healthcare.

Castro’s doctors erred…

“They took a chance, which was probably not the best judgment under the circumstances,” Gerson said.

Of course not, those doctors are probably jailed right now.

Of course not, those doctors are probably jailed right now.

If they’re lucky.

Any wagers they’ll be on the next Chevy pickup / boat conversion headed in the general direction of Key West?

Spiny Norman on January 16, 2007 at 10:46 PM

At least we can take comfort that his arrogance will prevent him from getting better medical help from the U.S., thereby ensuring his grotesque demise. Let’s give him a collective awwwww.

thedecider on January 16, 2007 at 10:52 PM

I’m sure the doc received a thank you colostomy with a bayonet.

Limerick on January 16, 2007 at 10:53 PM

Perhaps the picture emphasizes the problem with Cuban healthcare; they’re using the wrong tool on his colon problem.

thedecider on January 16, 2007 at 10:54 PM

My God, this is the best news story in months. I mean, that’s not saying much, but anyway… SO sweeeeeeeet.

Alex K on January 16, 2007 at 10:54 PM

And this is the health-care that Obama/HilClint/Kennedy want to shove down our throats. Maybe St. Cindy can fly down there and give him hug therapy.

I’m sure this fact is going to be front and center in Michael Moore’s next crockumentary.

The doctors also failed to remove that atrocious track suit Fearless Leader’s been wearing lately. That alone ranks as malpractice in my book…

jaleach on January 16, 2007 at 11:12 PM

Hey guys, to get a blow by blow description of the “several” surgeries Castro has endured, heh, you all need to get the Wall Street Journal daily email. Taranto notes at least three surgeries wherein the Docs really screwed up big time. Castro is leaking half a liter of liquid daily!!! Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.

And the Libs want us to install socialized medicine here….

You’re such a dude. Thanks for digging up that picture. I’m at a loss for words to express how this makes my day!!!

Caution on Raul Castro and who he really is. I’m proud of a few of my countrymen. Ion Mihai Pacepa, the author of the attached article, is one of them, and a great asset to America. After he defected from Romania he helped the CIA much with what was going on behind the Iron Curtain. Cuba is into more than growing sugar-cane and “good healthcare”.

This article was written when Castro fell ill months ago.

Judging by the way it looks, it’s probably an “aid” for when Cindy comes over to have a little afternoon delight.

Blacklake on January 16, 2007 at 11:37 PM

That’s what he used on his people, while he got filthy rich. Some ideal the libs have!

“It sounds like they tried to spare him the colostomy, which would have been the safer and more conservative approach, and what they did was to try to establish continuity of the bowel by sewing the colon his ideology to the rectum, and for one reason or another it sounds like that didn’t work. And now there are troubles.

Calling our idealistic ‘friends’ to wake up! You’ve been tentalized by that long baton too!

Entelechy on January 16, 2007 at 11:49 PM

That picture is too good not to have a caption contest. So I guess I’ll go first:

..Castro proudly displays the “Golden Probe” award to Chavez.

Guardian on January 16, 2007 at 11:50 PM

What the hell is that thing they are holding? If it is what I think it is, that just makes their grins all the more creepy.

Guardian, what do you mean by ‘first’?

Please tell me that’s a baton that Castro is passing Chavez and not him triumphantly holding up the tool the doctors used for his colostomy.

Rick, I was going for the Arafat being queer thing. Not that there’s any thing wrong with that. ;-)

Once again, Ahmadinejad will suffice. However, he might object to wearing red.

The Hillary health-care model, Cuba. Oh the poor left, is there no part of socialism that hasn’t gloriously failed on the world stage that they haven’t adopted as their own policy? But you know libs, never let anything as pesky as facts get in your way…………..

Death by stool…EEEeewwwww.

seejanemom on January 17, 2007 at 6:26 AM

The good news is that maybe Castro is going to Hell real soon. The bad news is that his anointed successor is a monster even worse than he is, his brother Raul.

Yesterday, I was speaking to a Cuban ex-pat who, with his family, left Cuba when he was a little boy. Most Cubans will be delirious when both Castro brothers are rotting in Hell. But what has a lot of Cubans in America worried is the invasion of fast-buck artists and carpet bagging con men when the regime inevitably falls. They (and we) will have to be careful to insure that democracy takes hold.

And even better news: When Communists in Cuba finally collapse, it almost certainly take down Chavez as well.

Those are good things….

That object in Fidel’s hand is the symbol of what Socialism and Communism does to people!

As for the failure of Cuba’s socialist medicine, anyone who is enlightened can see that it is not socialist healthcare that is at fault, but Pres Bush is at fault!
