Actually, the President is not their Command-in-Chief unless they are members of the military and the President little authority over any citizens traveling abroad. As long as they reside in another country, that countries government has the authority and control of that individual.

A perfect example of this is the requirement to extradite any American citizen that reside in another country. No American can be removed from another country to stand trial here without the permission of that citizen or the respective government.

The President can not order the Justice department to extract that citizen without following the laws and/or treaties of the respected government involved. If such a situation arose and a citizen was to stand trial here, the American courts would invalidate the arrest and detention of that citizen as it is contrary to federal law.

The President, and the American government, has very little authority over citizens living abroad, and those citizens can, if they wish, ignore any and all authority of the US with little or no recourse by this government.

Why do you think so many draft dodgers fled to Canada during the Vietnam War? It's because they knew that there was little America could do to enforce it's authority on those people.

RedinBlueCountry, the Drifter is an American citizen, living in France, as he stated, repeatedly.

There are many American citizens living abroad, and they can vote and do, mostly for the Left.

However they vote, the U.S. President is still their CiC. I believe that's what he was saying...

He stated in the beginning of his joining this site that he’s married to a French lady and has kids, and lives there.

I guess that makes him an American-Franco.

It also invalidates his' "After 6 years of life under this commander and chief" argument, unless President Bush also the Commander in Chief of the French military and is also President of France. If that were true then we know where the troops for the Surge will be coming from.

BTW, It's Commander in Chief, not Commander and Chief. That's a common mistake, but since Drifter is interested in accuracy I felt that should be pointed out.

The Constitution of the United States gives the title to the President of the United States, who "shall be Commander-in-Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the Militia of the several States, when called into the actual Service of the United States.

Does anyone know that the deficit is at an all-time low? Has been even during this time of drunken-sailor spending. You measure the deficit against GDP. Example; 2 people owe 25 grand. One makes 50 thou a year the other 100 thou. Who has the greater deficit to overcome? That is how a deficit is really measured. As always the drive-by gets it wrong(intentional or incompetent). They plaster it all over the papers and scream it from the broadcast boothe that it is at record highs. In real dollars, in actual numbers yes, but as it pertains to the health of the economy it is at an all-time low. This is all that matters.......

right2bright,

our Drifter doesn't live in Britain; he lives in Brittany, a region in France. He stated in the beginning of his joining this site that he's married to a French lady and has kids, and lives there.

I don't know the gent personally but I do believe what people claim on this board and don't question that further, unless they prove otherwise. I believed you when you stated your profession. I have no reason to believe otherwise.

So long as the trolls don't insult others, I actually like having them around. Call me naive and/or crazy but it's not much different than in life - one comes across all kinds and we deal with them.

I never aim to convert them and, obviously, their success with us is nil too. It w/b nice to be able to hold a discussion, without calling the other an idiot, swine, dumb or whatever...Maybe it's futile and idealistic...and I have failed in my own quest, repeatedly - mea culpa maxima. Sometimes our tempers just snap. Some of us regret it and some are just simply snooty and go on.

I find most amusing that if we stick to our points, we are not objective and dumb - if they stick to theirs, they are enlightened, fair and most intelligent.

Entelechy on January 15, 2007 at 5:35 PM

He knew exactly what you meant. People like him, when confronted by an argument they are losing, resort to cheap shots. I notice that when he is beaten, he retreats. Never saying he is wrong, he just posts his crap, than runs. The irony, is that posters put up with him. You must know him personally, you seem convinced that he lives in Britain. If you don't know him personally, don't bet on it.

Hardball Matthews displaying his liberal ideology trumps intelligence. The American people and congress don't have a say in regards to the Iran policy. Again, congress can refuse to fund whatever the president is doing. But the president has the say on foriegn policy via the constitution.........

Drifter, of course I know you're an American, living in Brittany. Sorry for not having been more clear in separating 'Americans living abroad' and 'Europeans'.

I meant 'water' in the sense of 'watered down' or not strong.

Your presidential leanings are still an exception to the two groups. There always are, to strengthen the rule:

- Mr. Moynahan voted for Mr. Ford it turns out, and
- Mr. and Mrs. McGovern did too, in 1976.

Presidential deaths are very revealing.

I agree that that almost all MSM components are more interested in promoting the Propaganda and Agenda of the Left. Their "reporting" is skewed to support their own political postions and agenda rather than report the facts.

I believe that the biggest single problem that the United States has is the Mainstream Media (MSM) and it's determination to mold public support to their agenda. This determination to control policy in the United States disregards the national interest, soldiers, citizens, and our welfare for their own benefit.

I do not believe much can be done about this state of affairs with the MSM beyond actively boycotting those who are most clearly diseminating propaganda for the Left (In my opinion that would include the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and NBC)and their sponsors. We also can partcipate in sites such as this, make others aware of the MSM bias to the Left, and become more well informed on their methods and specific instances such as "Jamilgate".

Any other ideas?

DriftedOutToSea,
Lots of us do, believe it or not. And as far as not finding anything redeeming in any conservative living U.S. president, I supported for 2 of the last 3, though since Reagan is no longer living he doesn’t count. And of the 2 remaining democrat presidents still alive, I supported neither. So, there you have it.

May I be the first to call BULLSHIT on that tired old lie? That patently phony claim seems awfully popular among the leftist trollery the last couple of years... Nothing you've ever posted could support that claim, so why do you bother? You can't possibly expect anyone here to buy that, can you?

Chris Matthews proves every day in every way that the left is biased far left, and is willing to sabotage a war that America is fighting for partisan political gain.

The "tag-line" of "Can Congress Stop White House Plans?" proves this point.

The disinformation by the press is so complete and so absolute that the vast majority of American simply do not understand what is actually happening and what is at stake in the war in Iraq. It is utterly impossible to engage people and have a civil discussion about the war in Iraq because "everybody knows" that Iraq is a disaster, that we've lost the war, blah, blah, blah.

This is what the American people are NOT BEING TOLD about Iraq:

The fact that more than 90 percent of the violence that dominates reporting from Iraq takes place in five neighborhoods in Baghdad, plus one of the 18 Iraqi provinces, is neither here nor there. The perception is that all of Iraq is lost. [Amir Taheri, IRAQ: WHY THE MEDIA MISSTEP]

Why isn't America being told these facts? Why is the perception that ALL of Iraq is violent, that the almost all the killing of Americans and innocent Iraqis is throughout the country instead of within specific neighborhoods of Baghdad and one province (Anbar)?

Taheri blames, or rather excuses, the inability to tell the true story to the lack of reporters on the ground, unfamiliarity with Arabic and local custom, corrupt "translators" and stringers, etc., and the UNWILLINGNESS of reporters to embed with US troops.

I disagree. I agree with UPI's Pam Hess who notes that the media doesn't care one iota if America loses. They don't WANT to tell the true story because it interferes with achieving their agenda -- the utter disgrace of the Bush presidency. As Hess notes, they don't care what the national security implications of losing Iraq are.

Here are things that Taheri says Americans don't know, because our media WON'T TELL THEM:

Last month, Iraq received the U.N.'s special environmental prize for reviving parts of the marshes drained by Saddam, thus saving one of the world's most precious ecological treasures. Almost no one in the media noticed.

Also last month, the Iraqi soccer squad reached the finals of the Asian Games - beating out Japan, China, South Korea and Iran. Again, few in the West noticed.

In 2006, almost 200 major reconstruction projects were officially completed and 4,000 new private companies registered in Iraq. But few seem interested in the return of private capitalism after nearly 50 years of Soviet-style control.

Iraq's new political life is either ignored or dismissed as irrelevant. The creation of political parties (some emerging from decades of clandestine life), the work of Iraq's parliament, the fact that it is almost the only Arab country where people are free to discuss politics to their hearts' content - these are of no interest to those determined to see Iraq as a disaster, as proof that toppling Saddam was a modern version of the original sin.

Iraq may still become any of those things - but right now it is none of them. When the real history of the Iraq war is written, posterity might marvel at the way modern media were used to manufacture that original sin. [Ibid.]

Someday, I hope that the traitor-class MSM gets their "just reward" of permanent disgrace, or better yet, imprisonment (or death as provided by law), for their treasonous behavior. I'll personally upgrade to premium cable AND pay-per-view to watch Matthews go to the gallows.

He and Olby are simply the line in the sand. They are our best defense against Darth Vader. We all know today, because of people like them, that Klingon's are in the White House. Mount Rushmore needs a re-chisel; Rather, Matthews, Obly, and Rosie. THAT will put South Dakota on the map. Wake up America. You are evil and the gig is up.
