Tonight’s the big night. The first two-hours a two-night, four-hour premiere of 24 is on the FOX network at 8pm eastern. I won’t be live blogging the show, but I’ll be in the comments section and will update the post several times.

Lorie Byrd at Wizbang also has an open thread going laced with links to other 24 bloggers.

Debbie Schlussel is blogging up a storm on what she calls “PC 24.” Yes it’s true CAIR has stepped in before (Season 4, I believe) when the terrorists were Arab or of Middle Eastern decent.

Check out Thoughts Online after the show for some 24isms.

Update (7:49pm): Drudge: ‘24′ has gone nuclear.

Update (7:53pm): Open threads at Stop the ACLU and The Political Pitbull.

Update (8:58pm): Jack Bauer just chewed a terrorsits neck off.

Update (9:53pm): Deep thoughts from Jim Treacher.

A preview to the next two hours:

Go Jack!
Although I would like to see a rescue mission rather than some kind of deal thingy with the Chinese.
Popcorn ready!!

Gwillie on January 14, 2007 at 8:00 PM

Please remember for us on the west coast don’t post any spoilers please

Gwillie on January 14, 2007 at 8:01 PM

bah humbug! I’m in mountain time so I still have 50 minutes until it starts :(

tiekitwist on January 14, 2007 at 8:09 PM

How do you even talk about it if you can’t post any spoilers? I’ve got a better idea…how about those on the West Coast that are afraid of seeing a spoiler, don’t read the thread?

Jay on January 14, 2007 at 8:15 PM

Jack dies and is replaced by a cyborg.

infidel on January 14, 2007 at 8:20 PM

If only we could get al-Assad, and the whole network falls apart immediately. Or Osama, right?

Wineaholic on January 14, 2007 at 8:32 PM

I’ve watched the first 3 eps, very good, lots of action and plenty for CAIR to boo and cheer. the scripting sessions must be pretty bi-polar. small example (not too spoilerish given the lines are on the tv commercials) an aide to the president is decrying profiling and internment one moment and minutes latter calling for the assassination of a terrorist leader – civil libertarian whip-lash!

coondawg on January 14, 2007 at 8:33 PM

Patriots win! OMFG!!! Patriots win!!!
Best game of the freaking weekend! Patriots win!!!

Mortis on January 14, 2007 at 8:42 PM

Super! 24 plot based around Muslims having their civil liberties violated!

Jay on January 14, 2007 at 8:43 PM

Yes it’s true CAIR has stepped in before (Season 4, I believe) when the terrorists were Arab or of Middle Eastern decent.

Actually, “Amnesty Global” stepped in to protect an American citizen from torture.

I’d never watched 24 before, and did a pretty good job of holding out until I saw the trailer for Day 6. Needless to say, I’ve been on a 24 bender sonce Thanksgiving. I just started Day 5. I should be caught up by next weekend. 24 is crack.

Kid from Brooklyn on January 14, 2007 at 8:45 PM

coondawg on January 14, 2007 at 8:45 PM

So, how about this internment camp idea?

Jay on January 14, 2007 at 8:45 PM

Kid from Brooklyn on January 14, 2007 at 8:45 PM

No, I meant in real life. When the series aired on television Jack had to “apologize” to the audience if they were offended by the plot line involving those of Arab or Middle Eastern decent.

Also: I just finished Season 3 earlier this afternoon. I’ve seen, but needed a refresher. Now on to Season 4!

PS: I’ve also been on a bender since Christmas.

Ian on January 14, 2007 at 8:49 PM

First twist…shouldna said to Jack that he will die for nothing. Dumb terrorist. Shouldn’t play around. If you wanna kill Jack you better do it quickly. So, there it goes..

***Repost, please read and be enlightened*

I think you 24-loving conservatives need to wake up. There was a time, i.e. season 3 and 4, when I thought 24 was the coolest thing ever–-and as I watched I often wondered “Why are so many liberals fans of this show? Jack Bauer tortures someone like every other episode, it’s a serious look at the war on terror, etc., how is it so critically acclaimed by the liberal TV critics?” Those questions were answered during S5 when I finally realized the politics of this show.

First of all, it ironically is VERY political correct, because the perception is the complete opposite. Many of us see it as a right-leaning show with a bold, real, unapologetic portrayal of the war on terror with the man Jack Bauer leading the charge. But how many times have our beloved CTU team been trying to thwart terrorist attacks by MUSLIMS, whom cause 99% of the terrorism in the world?! Let’s have a rundown season by season.

S1-First half the enemy were white Americans. Second half, eastern Europeans. Pre 9/11, not really the modern 24 mold of a counter-terror plot.

S2-The Muslim terrorists turn out to be mere pawns in a political game in which oil-greedy American businessmen are looking to cash in on a fabricated war (sound familiar?). In fact, many of the Muslims that were portrayed as (potential) bad guys turned out be very sympathetic characters, if not victims. 1-The prime terrorist, Syed Ali, gets killed, only after he witnesses his family (in his mind) being killed because he won’t reveal info; it also turns out he wasn’t all he was made up to be, and just another victim of the vast conspiracy. 2-A suspicious foreign Muslim, Yusef, supposedly looking to restore some dignity to his people, helps CTU and Jack on a mission, only to be lynched on the street by a couple of racist rednecks (and they really played up the redneck thing) in retaliation of the nuclear bomb. 3-Reza, the future son-in-law of Daddy Warner, is throughout the show portrayed as very suspicious and guilty of collaborating with the terrorists. He turns out to be completely innocent, and dies at the hands of his wacko white American wife-to-be. We also have a bunch of war-mongering generals and government officials that try to fabricate intelligence so they can rush into a war with three middle east countries (axis of evil?). These same people try to oust the judicious, ethical Democrat President David Palmer (the second premiere protagonist on the show) who wants all evidence at his disposal before making the decision to go to war. I had actually not realized the abundant shots at the Bush foreign policy, among other things, in this season until Season 5 when I started rethinking things.

S3-The first half the antagonists were Mexican drug lords. Second half, a single disgruntled British ex-special forces member.

S4-The only full season of actual Muslim terrorists waging jihad. This finally, only to have ads every episode with a disclaimer forced by the hand of CAIR et. al. saying something to the lines of it being purely fictional and not at all representative of Muslims or their ideology. The show did not delve very deep into the minds or agenda of the jihadists either. Republican President Keeler is portrayed to be a decent man, but a cold, flat character that the audience has no connection to. Then, of course, comes President Logan (R) is the most namby-pamby, incompetent loser ever. We see this in full (and then some) in season 5. On the other hand (and in the interest of being fair and balanced), “torture” is shown to be needed, and they are in many cases unapologetic about it; furthermore an ACLU-type group undermines CTU’s attempts to thwart the imminent terrorist attacks by trying to prevent them from interrogating a suspected terrorist. The suspected terrorist is guilty and information needs to be extracted from him immediately, and the ACLU-type group comes off very badly.

And finally, S5-the season that finally woke me up to the realities of this show. It was so crammed with far-left talking points and conspiracy theories it might as well have been written by the Daily Kos. Let’s see: Americans in high places in the government and military using rogue foreign terrorists to attack America–in essence, attack themselves–so we could have a legitimate excuse to go to war for oil in the region? Gee, where have I heard that one? This storyline, by far, is the most ludicrous, outlandish, and outrageous one they have ever come up with and it ruined the season for me. And it only got worse, with the ACTUAL PRESIDENT in collaboration with the conspiracy. And of course, Jack Bauer comes to save the day, and takes down the evil president who is abusing his power. Indeed, if there was such thing as political porn, this season would be the quintessence of it for the left; fantasies don’t get much better.

So, when you really look at the politics of the show, it is actually decidedly left and often a repudiation of the conservative doctrine in this era of combating terrorism. Crazy, and a tough pill to swallow–-I know–-I was (and still am to some extent) a big fan of this show. The setup and the delivery is brilliant, unprecedented, and riveting from purely a TV show standpoint. The politics, well, that’s a whole different story.

So instead of the question “Why do liberals like it so much?” the more appropriate question is “Why do you so many conservatives LOVE it?” We have Rush Limbaugh promoting it practically every week, and I’m beginning to wonder if he’s just a useful idiot for the producers he’s friends with. I also hear this upcoming season is more of the same with the thinly veiled political messages, now taking shots at the ostensible civil liberties violations by our government. I find it very odd how quick Rush Limbaugh, everyone here, and just about every other informed conservative can catch spin, agenda, and bias so quickly on any news report but astonishingly escapes them in an entertainment program. Food for thought.

I stand corrected. I just got done with Season 4 on DVD, and never saw the disclaimer.

I find it interesting that the Russians, Mexicans, Chinese, British, or Bosnians never saw the need to punk Fox into that kind of public-relations disclaimer. Taqquiya, bitches!

Kid from Brooklyn on January 14, 2007 at 9:15 PM

Yeah, he’s Al-Assad.

Ian on January 14, 2007 at 9:15 PM

WOW.
This show rocks harder every year–Jack Bauer rules!

Jen the Neocon on January 14, 2007 at 9:15 PM

I prefer this kind of *spin*. It registers with the *truth*, common sense, and the logic of history.

Yes, it’s just a show, but it seems to be the only thing within the television media that shows the other side. We are so bombarded the PC that it’s easy to forget the realities of life. We have been so programed; almost to the point of willingly walking to our own self-destruction.

jatfla on January 14, 2007 at 9:16 PM

Am I the only person who hasn’t watched this show? It’s not that it doesn’t interest me…it’s just that since I’ve never watched 24, why start now…I feel like I’ve missed too much already.

Unless…is there a DVD set of the previous season(s) out?

And is it worth watching?

JetBoy on January 14, 2007 at 9:18 PM

You know, I think they did that just to shut up all the people who complain that nobody ever eats anything on the show.

Jim Treacher on January 14, 2007 at 9:18 PM

For a guy who could barely take his own shirt off an hour ago, he seems to be getting around awfully good now.

Patriot33 on January 14, 2007 at 8:59 PM

AH. I feel better now. Never saw it and was feeling left out, but can rest easy now. What ya’ll should be watching is the original I SPY with Robert Culp and Bill Cosby. It still looks good, the pair, Cosby and Culp, made a great team and the Cold War politics and ethics are surprisingly relevant. And it wasn’t PC. Who could fuss with the scene where super spies Culp and Cosby consider approvingly that the Under Secretary of State, a crusty woman from Oklahoma has just dispatched – as in shot – the turncoat State Department type?

naliaka on January 14, 2007 at 9:22 PM

Yes, jet….I started watching in October. Watched all 4 seasons, rented from the video store. I have Season 5 (came out in December) waiting while I do the ironing this week. :~)

Yes, unabrewer…what did they stick in his back?

I noticed some of that too,esp the start of season 5, but I stick to the primary Bauer philosophy of kickin’ arse for my watching pleasure.

I am recording this season tho, I haven’t finished season 5 yet. ( and I really despise commercials)

Soooo, Glen Beck is on top of it tonight!(so far, 2/3rds thru the show and a stupid naked university party segment but mostly on.)

jatfla on January 14, 2007 at 9:56 PM

And based on the rest of the commercials, I don’t think I’ll be watching any other of Fox’s scheduled programs.

Is it a rerun tomorrow night or a continuation?

Which one?

Jim Treacher on January 14, 2007 at 10:20 PM

I hate how they make the President and Oval Office such a bunch of pussies that would trade Americans for a chance at security. Secondly, the idea that America would give up its intelligence network to a terrorist is insane.

Aside form that stupidery, I love this show.

Jay on January 14, 2007 at 9:35 PM

Please ‘24′ producers …. no moles this year. CTU has been penetrated more times than the accuser in the Duke lacrosse case.

Find another plot device instead of one you’ve already used in several previous seasons.

thirteen28 on January 14, 2007 at 10:31 PM

To paraphrase a quote from the first episode (mm… maybe the second) of season 2: “That’s the problem with you people… you want results, but your afraid to get your chin’s dirty with the dripping blood of your slain foes. I’m gonna need a wet-nap.

DaveS on January 14, 2007 at 10:33 PM

I don’t even think of that kind of stuff as “stupid” anymore; it’s just part of the show’s universe. And stuff like Bauer cleaning himself up after 2 years in a Chinese prison in the time it takes me to get the shower temperature right, the car he breaks into just happening to have a fully charged cellphone with full terrorist-tracking capabilities, etc.

Oh, and the Harold & Kumar guy, he’s supposed to be a high school student? At first I thought he was one of the kid from Sky High’s teachers or something.

Jim Treacher on January 14, 2007 at 10:33 PM

Jim, I think you misunderestimate Jack. For one, Jack has always been special .. obviously he has extraordinary mental skills. He is also a trained soldier — Delta Force, I think.

It’s possible someone has a fully charged cellphone, it’s called a carphone. A carphone with GPS. They make ‘em.

The information almost always yields results but the moonbat lefts view is that torture NEVER yields results. You cannot reconcile your claims with the realities that you are using as a basis for comparison.

Sorry, I guess we righties are just going to have to enjoy the show.

I am pretty much going to marry Jack Bauer. Minus the fact that he’s a few decades older than me… I think it is a totally reasonable life goal. Kicking the suicide bomber out the back of the subway may have been one of Jack’s best moves ever.

I’m floored that they are using muslims as terrorists again and we didn’t have the lame disclaimer before either episode about how muslims are really peace loving hippies that would never use a bomb to kill people.

Nonfactor on January 15, 2007 at 12:17 AM

For those new to the show, a few things you should know:

when you hear a character say this:
Set up a perimeter and contain them.
This means they will get away.

Open a socket.
This is an all encompassing computer term for when there are no more options to find Jack once he goes dark, but they open a socket and get a connection to him…

Jack’s gone dark.
He has to bend the rules so much that he can’t do them under the guise of an agent for the US. He will be pursued by American authorities for two episodes after going dark.

Vincenzo on January 15, 2007 at 12:19 AM

Jack is back … and he’s gonna kick some jihadi ass! Oh yeah!

A prediction – that “IAA” thing that Sis Palmer is an attorney for will turn out to be very much like CAIR, both their public persona as well as their hidden one.

Did I catch it right that the subway bomber said “Allahu Akbar!” just before pushing the trigger? That’s not very PC!

Re: the rant on Season 5 and the presidential conspiracy being political porn for the left – I took a different view on it. I saw it being a show of just how absurd the conspiracy theories we are getting from the left really are. It would take just such a carefully crafted script for a TV show to even come close to pulling anything like that off. It was a smack in the face to the tinfoil hat crowd.

Buy or rent the DVDs and listen to the commentary by the writers and producers … those folks would fit in quite nicely here. (Best Buy, Buy.com and Amazon.com often have them for very good prices … Best Buy just had all 5 seasons for $20 each)

Honestly, your post was so thoughtful and well reasoned, I was wondering if you could post it at least 4 more times, in bold…

Sarcasm off. Yes indeed we have Doctor Bashir from DS9 amongst us again..and man does he look the part. Hard guy trying to go straight..can’t believe he pulled it off; he seemed like such a dandy in Star Trek. What I really wish I had been able to pinpoint is who the actor was playing the FBI agent that took the Palmer lady into custody. Back to the show….

Believe it or not, I dozed off during the 1st our (missed about half of it). My son go so bored, he went off to chat on his computer.

The 2nd hours was better, but not much.

I am going to give the show until the 2nd Monday night episode to “hook” me, or I’m going to be watching something else this year.

Suffice it to say that I was seriously disappointed this time around.

The doubt is necessary but you’re right, it does get a bit old when it keeps happening season after season only for the doubters to later say “Oh, I guess you were right, Jack; I never should have doubted you.”

I’m guessing there are some warring camps in the writing department. On the good side, the terrorists are actually Muslims (so far as we know…there’s a tendency to sadly backtrack on these things mid-season), a suicide bomber actually uttered “Allahu akhbar!” before self-neutralizing, and best of all, the innocent moderate Muslim neighbor unfairly persecuted by both the FBI and his inexcusably intolerant neighbors turns out to actually be a terrorist! That’s good stuff!

On the downside we have pseudo-CAIR, the lifelong terrorist who’s suddenly good (or at least grey), a Jack Bauer who’s suddenly squeamish about cutting the info out of the bad guys, and whiny exposition from folks in the White House that sound more like quotes from girl-on-the-street interviews from a college campus (even when the people in charge have these concerns, I like to think their verbiage about it is at least a little more sophisticated).

Perhaps best illustrating the writing conflicts, though, is the DHS head who one moment whines that using the FBI to inconvenience Muslims poses a great constitutional threat, and the next is adamant about the necessity of using low-flying USMC helicopters to obliterate a private residence in Los Angeles! Oh, the dissonance!

On a sidenote, it’s been suggested that the Palmers are Democrats, while Keeler and Logan were Republicans. I think this is probably the subtext, though there seems to be a conscious–and largely successful–effort to keep the partisanship unclear. For instance, several seasons ago, when Keeler was running for office, it was mentioned in passing that he had been endorsed by the AFLCIO. Would that ever have really happened to a Republican?

For a couple of moments, I swear he looked like Tom Paris from Voyager…seemed a little old though.

It’s him. Seems this is the “24″ season for revitalizing Trek-spinoff careers. Now if only Geri Ryan weren’t stuck over on CBS…

So, now that Jack Bauer is a vampire and Principla Wood is the president, I see some tension between the two.
