Breaking: State AG accepts Nifong’s request to take over Duke case

He railroaded the Duke kids just long enough to get elected D.A., then handed the matter off before it blew up in his face. Still to come: a wrist slap from the state bar and dismissal of all charges by the Attorney General.

Two words: civil suit.

Update: Oh, the pathos.

Nifong met with the accuser in his office on Thursday. During that conversation Nifong told the accuser of his decision to recuse himself.

“He wanted to tell her his decision first,” Freedman [i.e., Nifong's lawyer] said. “He is very loyal to her, and he didn’t want her to hear about this through the media.”

Nifong, a career prosecutor for nearly 30 years, was “devastated” by having to prosecute the Duke case, his lawyer said.

“It’s devastating to him,” Freedman said. “He cherishes his reputation as an ethical attorney and prosecutor.”

Update: The Times tries to solve a puzzle: how can Nifong have behaved without integrity when he was a conscientious objector during Vietnam?

Blowback

My work here is done.

I hope he gets his.

Jail would be a special kind of punishment for a crooked DA, I suspect.

Jaibones on January 13, 2007 at 3:00 PM

Here’s hoping true justice is meted out. Nifong should be disbarred.

spmat on January 13, 2007 at 3:12 PM

Disbarment? Are you kidding? This is N.C.! They will probably erect a bronze statue for him in Durham.

bloggless on January 13, 2007 at 3:25 PM

Nifong only motive in this case was to get re-elected. He deserves to get disbarred.

PS. Allah looks like there is a typo and no link to the story.

F15Mech on January 13, 2007 at 3:27 PM

I think you are right, blogless, although he is white he played the race card to the point of protection or himself from any repercussions.
As for his “reputation as an ethical attorney” I would bet that this is not his first foray into this sort of misconduct. If I were a defense attorney that has a client who Nifong put away, I would be looking for serious retrials.

bbz123 on January 13, 2007 at 3:30 PM

No typo. I was writing it up as the NC AG was speaking at his press conference. The networks were carrying it.

Allahpundit on January 13, 2007 at 3:30 PM

I don’t know how this guy can look in a mirror.

Martin on January 13, 2007 at 3:52 PM

This guy is done

Opinionnation on January 13, 2007 at 4:02 PM

From the Boxer/Rice thread on HA:

my mother had a great description for people who look for things to get worked about: “injustice collectors”…

honora on January 12, 2007 at 11:52 AM

Nothing beats this perfect expression for what Nifong is.

I don’t know how this guy can look in a mirror.

Martin on January 13, 2007 at 3:52 PM

How? He sees Keith Olbermann Louis Nizer every time!

Entelechy on January 13, 2007 at 4:04 PM

Nifong is a vile, disgusting human being. A natural fit for the Rodham Administration.

JammieWearingFool on January 13, 2007 at 4:12 PM

Sue, Sue, Sue. I hope he loses everything in a law suit. I hope Duke loses most of their trust fund too. I hope the dancerstripper….slut gets sued into the poor house.

When is the media going to print a picture and name the name of this whore?

Tim Burton on January 13, 2007 at 4:12 PM

I seriously cannot believe this clown.

Theworldisnotenough on January 13, 2007 at 4:19 PM

Even the Good Lord could not punish this POS enough.

DoctorDentons on January 13, 2007 at 4:22 PM

Nice…Nifong and the accuser have made it even harder for women who have actually been raped…

EnochCain on January 13, 2007 at 4:22 PM

The slut is already in the poor house. She was trying to extort her way out with these allegations. This is the worst shake-down that I’ve ever seen. Unfortunately it got a total a-hole re-elected.

I think it might also win her the title of Most Inseminated in the next Miss North Carolina pageant.

Two things in the world that serve no purpose but to siphon money: strippers and ex-wives. Ironically, one regularly leads to the other.

SailorDave on January 13, 2007 at 4:29 PM

If I was one of those young mens parents I would spent every penny I had to see that idiot disbarred and penniless!

ChrisIansNana on January 13, 2007 at 5:28 PM

sorry spend instead of spent

ChrisIansNana on January 13, 2007 at 5:28 PM

Sounds like the fat lady is warming up…

Wade on January 13, 2007 at 6:36 PM

Nifong a CO during Nam? What a shock. Proving once again that rather than serving their community, state, or country libs seek to serve themselves. And if they can take down the enemy(white men, conservatives etc..)in the process that much the better. Nifong would have been better served to CO from this before it reached this point…….but of course that would have meant sacrifice on his part..like not winning an election…..

ritethinker on January 13, 2007 at 7:02 PM

Let me say from my swanky Raleigh casa:

1. Nifong will be disbarred.
2. The Democrat NC Attorney General has gubernatorial aspirations, so he has to give lip service to the 90% of black folks that still insist on voting for that party that has done what for them?
3. This case will be dismissed, although it may be delayed past Feb. 5.
4. Duke (especially the Gang of 88 professors that slandered the lacrosse players), Durham, Durham County, Nifong, and the accuser will be paying either monetarily, with jail time, or both.

SouthernGent on January 13, 2007 at 7:49 PM

The hell with suing him. I say his ass oughtta be locked up. He certainly violated those young men’s civil rights.

I too, can’t believe this slut is still protected in anonimity.

And you’re right, this whole case has made it harder for REAL rape victims

Chuck on January 13, 2007 at 8:58 PM

Calm down everyone, once the charges aginst the original defendants are gone, so goes the anonimity of the accuser. Once the civil suits get rolling along, you’ll get the name. And be damned to her and Nifong for handing every rapist in the country a handful of sand to throw in the eyes of all.
When I was an Assistant State’s Attorney (in Illinois) it was hard enough to win those cases without crap like this hanging there for the criminal defense bar to wave like a bloody shirt.

Bah.

major john on January 13, 2007 at 10:27 PM

If you want to know her name just go to LIESTOPPERS.COM. It’s a great blog that recently relented on not using her name after version 5.0 of her story came out.

SouthernGent on January 13, 2007 at 10:40 PM

He is accused of making inappropriate comments in the press about the three indicted players and the case against them.

That sounds far too small an accusation for malicious professional malpractice. Slandering the defendants before the trial begins, while sitting on exculpatory evidence, is much bigger than “making inappropriate comments”.

A pox on his house.

Freelancer on January 14, 2007 at 6:10 PM

I’ve heard some grumblings about civil rights violations and obstruction of justice bandied about, too.
