Sadr preparing countersurge — or is he?

posted at 5:20 pm on January 12, 2007 by Allahpundit

All he has to do is keep quiet for a year. Then we’ll be out of his beard and he can go about becoming the Scarface he always knew he was.

Is he smart enough to do that? Maybe.

US military intelligence sources tell ABC News that large shipments of weapons have been smuggled to Iraqi militia over the past five weeks, including dozens of Iranian supplied EFP’s, or Explosive Form Projectiles, highly effective against armored vehicles…

US and Iraqi intelligence units on the ground detected the shipments which are believed to be of Iranian origin. In addition, US military sources tell ABC, Al Sadr has been working on his own “surge,” actively recruiting hundreds of residents of Sadr City to supplement the 8 to 10,000 militiamen already believed to make up the “Mahdi Army” in Baghdad.

Bahaa al-Araji, one of Moqtada al-Sadr’s representatives in the Iraqi parliament, has told ABC News that the radical Shiite cleric has ordered his Mahdi Army not to attack US forces — even if targeted.

Makes sense. Neither side wants to fight: Bush can’t afford a burst in casualties and Sadr can’t win if he forces us into a real battle. So we’ll do some raids and they’ll take a shot at a tank here and there to raise the withdrawal pressure, but otherwise they won’t resist; then, after six months of (relative) calmness, we’ll claim they’ve been pacified and declare victory. And then we’ll be gone. The world is yours, Scarface.

Iraq’s foreign minister says the Iranians arrested by U.S. troops in that consulate raid yesterday were there with the government’s approval. I’ll bet — one of the men arrested is rumored to be a top Iranian paramilitary official. Meanwhile, a day after Joe Biden and Chuck Hagel warned Bush to keep his hands off Iran, Tony Snow and Bob Gates took time to reassure a worried Rick Ellensburg that Bush will be keeping his hands off Iran.

Exit question: Speaking of being forced into battle, is the American public going to make the Dems put ‘em on the glass?

The hell with Congress. Let Bush do his job without a bunch of linguini-spined arm-chair generals in both Houses getting in the way.

Answer to your exit question, only if you believe:

according to a CBS News poll.

What a bunch of tripe…

PinkyBigglesworth on January 12, 2007 at 5:32 PM

Perhaps the lefties can pitch in for some orthodonic treatments for old Sadr before he mounts his “countersurge”. That way he can have a pretty smile for all the Reuters and AP cameras that will undoubtedly fawn all over him.

darwin on January 12, 2007 at 5:37 PM

It figures the people CBS handpicked for their poll think congress has some authority on the troop surge. The only authority congress has at this point is the purse-strings. Go ahead dems, make my day, cut off supplementals to the troops. You spineless bastards did this to our guys in Nam. Let’s see the courage of UberDrunk Kennedy and his militia, I dare you to cut the funding for our troops. But they don’t have the courage of their rhetoric, they will wait and see if public opinion polls will support the cutting of funds. I’m thinking of an Arab name for the dem militias..how about Al Cowarda or the democratsa cut and run brigades, or Quittah, Surrenderollah…….

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot does that mean anyway? “Put ‘em On The Glass?”

Am I the only one who is scratching his head?

E L Frederick (Sniper One) on January 12, 2007 at 5:50 PM

I was just about to ask the same thing.

Scot on January 12, 2007 at 5:53 PM

Congressional Approval! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I think I have said it before, but this campaing seems more and more like the Peloponessian War between Sparta and Athens. It was meddling by politicians that lost the war for Athens. Now, history repeats itself.

Troy Rasmussen on January 12, 2007 at 5:55 PM

“Put ‘em On The Glass?”

I don’t have a clue, either.

laelaps on January 12, 2007 at 5:57 PM

He should make them take a position, then do what he wants.

I think, not completely sure, that this is a reference to testicles, more specifically, testicular fortitude, or what MM refers to as b@#$ls on Fox News.
My understanding is that some people think that the Democrats can be shamed into actually saying out loud what they think.
I, for one, doubt this.

billy on January 12, 2007 at 6:07 PM

My guess is that Mookie’s surge will be a bust. The last time the Mehdi army fought a pitched battle with the US military they got their turbans handed to them. Nineteen Mehdi gunmen were killed for every US military killed. Maybe it had something to do with all that drug paraphanelia our guys found abandoned in their positions.

I’d guess that a repeat of that battle would not be too popular with the ones who survived it. But then, they’ve probably told everyone they won and have talked goofballs into fighting another victorious battle, just like the first one. ALLAH AKBAR!

Bring it on.

The only good martyr is a dead martyr.
Time for Sadr to be a martyr. Time to join Saddam.

apparently “Put ‘em on the glass” means pressing breasts against a window. As in flashing boobs against a car window.

Guardian on January 12, 2007 at 6:26 PM

How about he just prepare to go to the DENTIST….geeeeeeeeeeeeez…

My posts have gone “twilight Zone” on me. Sorry for the repeats.

Just for your own personal amusement, Moqtada al-Sadr was nicknamed “Ayatollah Atari” in his seminary days because he played video games so much. He’s kind of a nerdy fat kid.

The nerdiness might explain his darth vader fantasies.

seejanemom:

I can’t resist. The time is right.

In my younger years, there was a series of commercials featuring kids with good dental check-ups… they were called Crest kids.

Can we now officially call Mookie… wait for it…

the Anti-Crest?

OK, poor joke. But I am sick of seeing his face without a FNC screen crawl al-Sadr dead below it. Ayatollah Atari dead would be acceptable too, PR.

I second that. Get the man a dentist. I’m tired of looking at his ugly mug. Ted Kennedy should change his name to Ayatollah Rollovah. He wants to do the Iraqis what he did to that poor woman, leave them in the lurch and swim for safety.

In that case, if anyone needs to “put them on the glass” it’s Ted Kennedy… he’s over due for his yearly mammogram.

He’s in deep shiite.

I think Sir Mix-A-Lot was just providing a valuable public service by reminding women of the importance of regular breast exams.

Put ‘em on the glass? A Hockey phrase…

And I agree, al-Sadr needs to go, today.

Zorro on January 13, 2007 at 7:50 AM

What do they mean by “detected”? I hope they mean “destroyed”, because when the military “detects” a weapon that will be used against our troops the next step will be a laser guided 500lb bomb “detecting” them.

Can someone confirm that these weapons were in fact destroyed or at least captured?

csdeven on January 13, 2007 at 8:27 AM

Richard Crenna to Mookie: “10,000? If you’re gonna bring that many people, just remember one thing …”

Mookie: “Yeah? What’s that?”

Crenna: “A whole lotta body bags.”

.

SailorDave: “The Anti-Crest”

HAHAHAHAAAaaaaaaa!! GOOD ONE DAVE! You win!

Tony737 on January 13, 2007 at 10:40 AM

All I know is whenever I see his face I was to surge.

(Bet that turban of his would make a good air sickness bag…)

Time to send him to his virgins (the only place he’ll get one with that weevil puss).

“Put ‘em on the glass”

I thought it was a refrence to the glass slides used with standard microscopes.

Put them on the glass, and under the microscope…….

or maybe not?

Jones Zemkophill on January 13, 2007 at 12:56 PM

“Put ‘Em on the Glass”

The truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Specifically, the uncovered truth. As in… Put them on the glass so I know they are for real for real.

So, to answer the question… Yes. I think that the Dems have stepped into a crossfire of their own making and the folks will demand to see what they got.

The only sensible statement made lately from any GOP member, was from Senator Spineless on the Border Lindsey Graham (R-SC):

“We can’t fight a war with 525 Commander in Chiefs.” Otherwise most, if not all of the Republicans have been disgustingly AWOL.
