[...] Like Captain Ed says, the only way Maliki can start booting Sadrist ministers is if he’s prepared to lose the support of their 30 MPs, and the only way he’s prepared to do that is if he has 30 MPs from the opposition set to take their place in his coalition. I have no idea who those replacements might be; neither, it seems, does Ed. Iyad Allawi and Zalmay Khalilzad were in Kurdistan today reportedly to drum up support for a new coalition that would, presumably, seek to replace Maliki with the secularist Shiite Allawi (whose party includes Jamal al-Din). Theoretically that’s the best thing that could happen to Iraq, but god knows how the religious Shiites would react to being stripped of power. [...]

[...] MEMRI’s justly famous for publicizing radicalism in Islamic media but rarely do they get credit for what they do to bring to Americans’ attention Arab liberals who want to unmake the cycle of fascism and fundamentalism. Here’s a 70-minute compilation of clips, some of which you’ll recognize (Wafa Sultan) and most of which you won’t. Our hero, Iyad Jamal al-Din, gets a nice long segment starting at 20:20. Skip around and expose yourself to a bit of each speaker if you’re not inclined to sit through it all.
Amazing...

I've heard the rhetoric prior to this Dec 2006 video - I've heard it on documentaries - Some say "we-mid-easterners" need change from the outside - i.e. America-USA --- Others say we need it from the inside; and neither side can agree.

I agree with everything on that video - however, I would strongly add that Step 2 would be to include the Women population into the reform; and to do so immediately.

The Iraqi's have the benefit of our 200 years of practicing democracy and can learn by our mistakes. It's not much of a hedge against that 1400 years, but it's a start.

These are the type of people that put our country together. Speaking out to traditionalists that cannot understand the concept of freedom. The bird cage analogy is perfect. Kept in a cage for 1,400 years, how can you expect the bird to fly when the cage is broken open. Could have been said in Boston, a couple of hundred years ago.

Someone remarked that the people in the southern part of Iraq are of the same mind as this guy. Can they please provide some kind of link to support that? It would be real nice to have something to stuff up the libs ignorant butts when discussing reasons for hope in Iraq.

Wow - again. Iyad Jamal al-Din really seems to have an accurate picture of his country and the role of democracy. It is opinion such as these that really give me hope that an Islamic country such as Iraq can actually enjoy some kind of democracy. Wow, Wow, Bow Wow!

The problem is that, in my opinion, Islam and democracy are not compatable. Islamic doctrine is not only a religion but a political entity that tolerates none but itself, and requires subjugation or elimination of all others.

I am at a loss to see how even Iyad Jamal al-Din (can we add a Wow! in his name somewhere?) can reconcile Islam with democracy.

I know you are being facetious by saying he’s the “last decent man in Iraq,” but as you know, that would be the lib media’s position.

I know where you were going with that one Debbie, but I hate to say that the lib media's position would be that this guy is the Anti-Christ. They're most likely wishing for his death as we type. Pro-American and pro-Bush words do not digest well in the belly of a traitor.

Red flag phrase: now believed
That would be a lawyer talking so he could get out of it later,”I didn’t say were, I said believed!”
Well is it TRUE?
That’s not Associated Press-Talk is it? That unbiased font of virtual knowledge, courtesy of the Left?

naliaka, you make a very good point. That is used just like unnamed sources all the time. I shall be on the lookout for that little phrase.

Not sure how dressing like a typical Shi’ite imam constitutes “dressing like a Sadrist.” That’s the way ALL Shi’ite Imams from Iraq and Iran dress. And even Shi’ite Shiekhs Fadlallah and Nasrallah in Lebanon dress that way. Since they’ve all been doing so for decades–long before Sadr was born–it’s not “dressing like a Sadrist.” It’s dressing like what he is–an imam. That’s the standard uniform. With a nickname like Allah Pundit, this should be a basic for you. But, strangely, it isn’t. Hmmm . . .

Debbie, Allah has been a little stressed lately. He is the only kitty in the litter box most of the time. (touching the monkey relieves stress) ;-)
