U.S. troops raid Iranian consulate in Iraq, traumatize left-wing bloggers

I’m pretty sure emotional injuries are actionable under the Federal Tort Claims Act. Appearing for the plaintiffs: elite snowtrooper and Bronze Star winner Capt. Rick Greenwald Ellensburg, who, per Greg Tinti, wonders if it isn’t a “definitive act of war” to go around seizing other countries’ diplomatic redoubts.
Why, yes it is, replies Moran, shivering from the irony.
A resident living near the mission said the foreign force used stun bombs in the raid and brought down an Iranian flag that was on the roof of the two-story yellow house. As the operation went on, two helicopters flew overhead, said the resident on condition of anonymity because he feared retribution.
“They took five Iranians with them and at about 7 in the morning they handed over the house to Kurdish peshmergas,” he said.
The Pentagon denies the building was a consulate. Even if it wasn’t, Iranian terrorists act on behalf of the regime. They’re all reclaimable as immunized “diplomats” if their government wants them back.
Capt. Ellensburg fears that this is the opening shot in the Chimperor’s next military adventure, i.e., an attack on Iran. There certainly are signs pointing that way and none of them are encouraging, although for sheer despair, this one takes the cake. An army that fought Israel to a stalemate versus the most inept arm of the U.S. security apparatus? What could go wrong?
Condi told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee today that we can’t negotiate with Iran lest they demand nuclear weapons as the price of their “cooperation.” Which leaves us with three options: 1) weak sanctions, 2) a bombing run, 3) hoping that Allah takes matters into his own hands.
Exit question: Why has Iran’s nuclear program apparently stalled?
Second exit question: What in the hell is this all about?
Update: Ace says viva la insurgency!

If true, nothing good.
I love the Jawa report, but I hope they’ve got bad info on that story.

I guess the mullahs would have to say UFO crash, Zionist en masse unison belching or something, anything since their last big earthquake smacked of Allah (no pun intended) being rather upset with them.
I have experienced earthquakes northeast of there, in Afghanistan, that were…fairly noticable.
Oh, and consulates ain’t embassies - and we know what the Iranians think of the sanctity of embassies.
major john on January 11, 2007 at 3:24 PM
Gee… if raiding a so called Embassy is a “definitive act of war” what is providing material support to the insurgents and killing Americans?
I think I missed the memo.

Iranians have sticky skin, that reacts quite well to napalm.
Write that down.

Allahpundit,
This title is clever and hilarious!
Poor, poor, pitiable left-wing bloggers.
Shed a tear for them.
Thanks for the chuckle, Allah!

AH yes, the doctrine of Reciprocity.
When Subject A (Iran) invades the sovereign embassy of Subject B (The USA) and takes the workers/diplomats hostage, they should not be suprised if in the future Subject B (The USA) reciprocates such actions back upon Subject A (Iran).

What’s he gonna do, make ‘em drink SOY?

So was it an act of war in 1979 when Jahmmy “Blame the Jooos” Carter was president and our citizens were guests of the ayatollah?
LakeRuins on January 11, 2007 at 3:39 PM
The lefties have nothing to be traumatized over. Maliki will make us release the Iranians, just like he did last time.

Could it be that the second exit question provides the answer to the first exit question?
RedWinged Blackbird on January 11, 2007 at 3:44 PM
Not really.
Every US Embassy exists with the Sword of Damocles hanging over it’s head any way. Knowing that at any moment things could turn ugly.
Reciprocity still holds true today. and I don’t believe the US will violate the territory of any nation that does not violate ours.
Jones Zemkophill on January 11, 2007 at 3:44 PM
I agree, Major. Last time I checked, Iran is still on the hook for an Embassy, and 54 hostages. We need to collect that receipt.

Greenwald needs to have one of his puppets untwist his knickers. How much can a heart bleed before it stops functioning? Idiot.
I’m not good with the euphoric reaction as payback for 1979, this doesn’t begin to compare. If the site were indeed a “protected” mission, we’ll have to step up precautions at our own consulates in the region. They’ve never been attacked before though, right? /sarc
That said, it’s easy enough for one authoritarian regime to claim that anywhere one of it’s subjects sets foot is sovereign soil, but it doesn’t make it so. Press on.
Above quote from the Telegraph UK. Secret plan? Classified? Not any longer, if ever. If indeed the story is true, and the information was classified, who’s the leak? I’m really getting sickened by this stuff. That is, unless it’s a beautifully orchestrated disinformation ploy.

Well, gee, Achmed. Now we know how much Plutonium not to store in on box. Now where we gonna get more?
bdfaith on January 11, 2007 at 3:52 PM
I’m not going to buy the story about the so-called nuclear detonation in Iran. There’s no empirical evidence that anything happened. If there was a detonation that could be felt 100 miles away, you would think that seismologists would have detected something. Yet, nothing was registered with a magnitude 2.5+ in Iran. Also, no reports of increased radioactivity or fallout downwind. Consider me very skeptical.
lawhawk on January 11, 2007 at 3:59 PM
At least when we take a consulate or embassy we don’t hold the staff illegally for 444 days. The Iranians ought to be quite familiar with storming other nations embassies….here’s to hoping payback is hell in this case…

Turns out we might have cause to worry about an Iranian nuke
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070111/ap_on_re_eu/iran_nuclear
Seems they have stop most of the activity at the nuke sites. That seems to suggest they have accomplished what they wanted.

From what I can find, there is no active Iranian consulate in Irbil. It seems to have been closed several years ago. There is an agreement in principle publicized last month that Iraq should “…help with the opening of Iranian consulates in Irbil and Al-Sulaymaniyah…”, but I somehow doubt they have gotten that completed since RFE published the article on 12/21.
Link for the joint statement.
Dave in W-S on January 11, 2007 at 4:20 PM
That was sweet, but just practice. As for the people who worry about sovereignty issues, the radical Iranians didn’t care - they’re the only ones who have violated protocols - they went on to violate international diplomatic pouch priviledges for years. They haven’t played by the rules for a long time, and boasted about it. The diplomatic corps might squeal, in a hired mourners sort of manner, but they all know that they have more to fear from Iranian flaunting of diplomatic norms than from the Americans. Regular Iranians - quite a few nice people there - but the regime is poison.

“At least when we take a consulate or embassy we don’t hold the staff illegally for 444 days.”
Why not “return the favor” and hold every Iranian diplomat we capture in Iraq for 444 days, blindfolded, bound hand and foot, in a small, dimly lighted room.
That is EXACTLY what Amamanahandjob did to our people.

Google news says Iran is clearing minefields from the Iran.Iraq war?

RE: Possible Big Boom in Iran:
Maybe a a low level air-burst test of an EMP weapon????… Iran claimed to have a few of them ready a year or so ago and threatened to use them over mid-America.
That would account for the boom but lack of serious seismic evidence. And if done at low enough altitude in a remote valley or basin, electronic ‘evidence’ could be minimal…
I suppose our satellites over the region would have noticed, but we sure can’t count on public confirmation from the government unless they want to use it to justify an attack on Iran.

Why not let Marine Corps intelligence handle Hezbollah? Something tells me they’d be a hell of a lot more motivated. motivated.

“Tehran said the attack violated all international conventions.” - This from the nation that violated our embassy and imprisoned our diplomatic staff for 444 days.
An act of war? So be it. Iran has been at war with us for decades. It is about time we responded with our military. And it’s past time we started fighting the war against Islam like we fought against Germany….hard and fast. Blitzkrieg ‘em.
Now if we can only roll troops across the Iranian border…
Has the whining from the dems begun, even after they demanded a peek at Iran?
We should do this 443 more times.

Ledeen thinks it was the Ethiopians? I prefer to think it was a little wake-up package from one of our battle groups in the Persian Gulf–a little “get to know me” message.

Amazing what a run-away Daisy Cutter can do. Bam…for some unknown reason it just simply fell out of the sky from some mysterious who-knows-what that had some kinda jet engine on it…..damn…who woulda thunk it.

Since the majority of the public (actually 98% are personally-uninvolved and if-asked-clearly, are indifferent about the entire operation/war except that the MSM’s slanted news “makes them feel bad“) thinks Bush has “failed in Iraq”, he should at least throw a curve ball to the mullahs (and their global jihadist pals) and smash the Iranian nuclear ambitions NOW while he is still CIC, since it would make no difference to his re-election possibilities and could actually secure our Civilization’s future.
Better to be cursed undeservedly for saving someone (as many a lifeguard has gotten a broken nose from a thrashing, drowning, panicky swimmer), rather than fail in his ultimate duty to protect our nation, by failing to answer the Iranian nuclear lunacy, and deserve the curse.

I’m sure the “building” was really a Mosque and that everyone arrested was merely part of a wedding party.
