UC-Santa Cruz cancels job fair, can’t guarantee military recruiters’ safety

They don’t explicitly say it’s because of the recruiters, but rest assured — it’s because of the recruiters. And true to form, rather than provide a surge in security, they’ve opted to quietly withdraw the event.
Less trouble for everyone that way. Except the students who were counting on it to find jobs.
The boss, I’m sure, will be all over this once she gets back from doing that thing the soon-to-deploy 82nd Chairborne WiFi Division was 1000% sure she’d never do.
Thanks to Nathan Bradfield for the tip.
Update: Whoops. Headline originally said “Santa Clara.” Fixed now. Thanks to Travis for the heads up.

Why would they have thought Michelle would back out?
I’m just about the biggest chicken I know of (very adverse to pain) but I wouldn’t pass up an opportunity to go there. My curiosity and need to “see for myself” would definitely overpower my extremely well-developed sense of self preservation.
Michelle is both brave and intellectually curious. With that combination, I would have been 1000% positive that she would go. And, I would have been right.

And will be rescheduled as soon as we can un-invite the recruiters.

I get the impression that once Michelle decides to do something, only a martyrdom-seeking moron would dare get in her way.

Ooops, sorry… canceled your federal funding…. guess we can’t guarantee your student loans…

I’d get in her way, but only to move her out of the way of high speed copper coated lead.

Liberal students act an ass when there aren’t any consequences. So what else is new? If any students were actually expelled and had to explain why to their parents you might see a diferent attitude. But what are the chances a UC-Santa Cruz would ever hand down a real punishment?

I live in Santa Cruz. The local entertainment throw-away has a man-on-the-street question every week. OK, This is Santa Cruz and I should be gender neutral, nonjudgemental about species, and sensitive about GLBT issues. There are photographs of those giving the answers, you figure out the categories.
Anyway, this week’s question was about the death of Saadam. People here are sad. This is a tragedy. He should have been given the Peace Prize instead of the rope.
In defense of Santa Cruz, a great place to live. Wonderful climate, great food and wine, and lots of …well, interesting individuals. For those old enough to remember, Angela Davis is on the faculty at UCSC.

You know, it’s too bad the military doesn’t comission strategic geniuses what have a gimpy leg, or I’d be right there.
I would have made an excellent Company Commander. (Or so my little sibs (E-4s) tell me.)

I wish you wouldn’t pick on those poor students; they’re under enough pressure. I mean, how are they supposed to decide which rally to go to with so many choices? It’s a tough decision, my friend.

Simple solution. Let the recruiters bring a Few Good Men with them, and some of the tools of the trade to show off. Oh, and with rules of engagement that allow them to take care of the safety of the recruiters.
But that might not be so good for the safety of the Direct Action folks.

I wish they would cut off federal funding to these clowns and to the SF Schools as well. Can someone explain to me why this hasn’t been done? I hate whiney liberals and their spawns.
Catie96706 on January 11, 2007 at 3:37 PM
Seriously.
UCSC person: We can’t guarantee your security.
Recruiter: No problem. We’ll do it ourselves. (Alternate: That’s a funny thing to say to the people whose job it is to guarantee yours.)
Farmer_Joe on January 11, 2007 at 3:46 PM
I’ll help guard the recruiters

What is rich here is that the college administrators say they are preserving free speech by cancelling those events where thugs oppose free speech. In short, they are doing the thugs work for them by shutting down the speech of those people the thugs don’t like. It’s cowardice, not just physical cowardice but intellectual cowardice.

Did AP just run “82nd Chairborne” smack on the nutroots? Brilliantly played, Sir! Heh!

I like it!

Lenin would be proud.
I’ll bet I can find a gathering of kids who would never attend UCSC.

There are times I think that the safety they are guaranteeing is that of the hucksters, what with the fact that any recruiting station can furnish not only the dedicated NCOs and SNCOs who do the thankless job, but also more than a few junior guys who are present for either recruiter’s assistance (read: extra time at home in exchange for doing the grunt work the recruiters don’t like) or are in the area on leave. My recruiting substation, during the time I was on RA, could field nearly a full squad (13 Marines) and we all would have JUMPED at the opportunity to watch each others’ backs in this kind of situation. I tell you what, one protester gets violent and it’s ON! He would have gone down under a pile likes of which he would not have known in his nightmares.
Unfortunately, clobbering civilians (even those who asked for it) gives the command a black eye and is fodder for up-and-coming ACLU attorneys, so we never got the chance. So the recruiters would have to get extra security to protect them from these so-called “peace” activists which the university doesn’t want to fund (or won’t bother to) and as a result, they get canceled. C’est la vie.

Didn’t I report that yesterday? Heard that from one of my Santa Cruz boys.
A good portion of the students live in caves in the forests above UCSC. Another portion of “students” just walk around pretending to be UC material.

I’ll grant that engaging violent demonstrators in hand-to-hand fighting wouldn’t look good on camera, but isn’t that one of the reasons we have snipers?

These are the grandchildren of the pampered nutcases that took over campuses in the 60s & 70s, and suffered no consequences. We are now reaping the whirlwind.

Yup yup..time to begin yanking federal bucks from these colleges until they start standing up for the rights of our military. Liberal colleges have zero problem standing up for the rights of other groups..it’s time they show some respect to the people who enable them to be the way they are. It befuddles me how liberals want the military not to come visit for those who wish to ask questions and want to join…yet they’d be the first ones to scream if there was a draft. Hello…2 plus 2 = 4 even if you don’t want it to be.
