U.S. gunship attacks Al Qaeda in Somalia; Update: Success?

The left gets a new root cause, the rest of us get that rush of well being that invariably comes with payback. Everybody wins.

The targets included the senior al Qaeda leader in East Africa and an al Qaeda operative wanted for his involvement in the 1998 bombings of two American embassies in Africa, Martin reports. Those terror attacks killed more than 200 people.

The AC-130 gunship is capable of firing thousands of rounds per second, and sources say a lot of bodies were seen on the ground after the strike, but there is as yet, no confirmation of the identities…

Once they started moving, the al Qaeda operatives became easier to track, and the U.S. military started preparing for an air strike, using unmanned aerial drones to keep them under surveillance and moving the aircraft carrier Eisenhower out of the Persian Gulf toward Somalia. But when the order was given, the mission was assigned to the AC-130 gunship operated by the U.S. Special Operations command.

If the attack got the operatives it was aimed at, reports Martin, it would deal a major blow to al Qaeda in East Africa.

Update: If we got the people we’re hoping we got, you’ll see one or more of these names in the news very shortly.

America is worried about four people. To start, the deputy commander of the union’s military wing, Aiden Hashi Ayro, is said by American intelligence and a recent report by the International Crisis Group to have been trained in Al Qaeda camps in Afghanistan before September 11, 2001. After the attacks, he returned to Afghanistan to join the fight against the Americans.

Mr. Ayro’s boss and commander of the union’s military, Hassan Dahir Aweys, was placed on the State Department’s list of international terrorists in November 2001 and named in a presidential executive order the same month on international terrorism. American counterterrorism officials have long said Mr. Aweys was a key source of coordination for the 1998 Al Qaeda attacks on America’s embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.

Also of interest for America are Fazil Abdullah Mohammad, or Harun, and Abu Tala al Sudani, two alleged terrorists who helped plot the 1998 bombings and are now key leaders in the courts union.

Update: Here’s the State Department webpage about the embassy bombings. It notes that Clinton was “deeply troubled” by the news.

Update: The USS Eisenhower has been sent to Somalia in case jets are needed for further strikes.

Update: Early indications are good.

[The strike] was based on joint military-CIA intelligence and on information provided by Ethiopian and Kenyan military forces operating in the border area…

Sources said last night that initial reports indicated the attack had been successful, although information was still scanty…

One target of the strike, sources said, was Abu Talha al-Sudani, a Sudanese who is married to a Somali woman and has lived in Somalia since 1993 — the year of the attack against U.S. troops that was chronicled in the book and movie “Black Hawk Down.” In a 2001 U.S. court case against Osama bin Laden, Sudani was described by a leading witness as an explosives expert who was close to the al-Qaeda leader…

Others have identified Sudani as the financier for Fazul Abdullah Mohammed and Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan, believed responsible for the 1998 bombing of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. All are among the senior al-Qaeda operatives the Bush administration has charged were sheltered by Somalian Islamic fundamentalists controlling Mogadishu, the country’s capital. They are believed to have fled late last month when Ethiopian troops drove the fundamentalists out of the capital and toward the Kenyan border.

Think about this operation. Senior Al Qaeda leader was tracked through a war-torn shithole half-way around the world without putting one single American in jeopardy. They must have been tracked for quite a while with out them even knowing. What an amazing operation!!! God Bless America and the Men that defend Her.

Good hunting gents, but what I will never figure out is that we can fire on terrorists in Somalia, but the gunman from Mexico that forced the unarmed National Guard to retreat in Arizona, and took over thier observation post for a while, doesn’t even rate a response.

An old tee shirt I have from the gunships states “You can run, but you’ll only die tired”. Sounds like the case here.

Time to regroup Al Qaeda. Back to the drawing cave.

Those suicide belts and IEDs have little affect on the wrath of a C130 gunship.

I’ve seen the AC-130’s in action (well, training action) on some of the islands of the coast of the panhandle of Florida. With all of the tracers, it looked like a laser beam hitting the island (this was at night {Special Operations operating at night? Duh!}). I hope these terrorists enjoyed the sight during their last few seconds of existence.

First, they have to find a way of ascribing it to the divine ascendancy of Reichsfuhrer Pelosi to the throne.

Second, they’ll have to find a way of describing a plane as being “stuck in an unwinnable quagmire” and, thirdly, they’re all waiting for AP to invent an “eyewitness” testifying that the gunship actually took out three orphanages, seven weddings, fifteen mosques and a partridge in a pear tree.

I read “AC-130″ and now I must change my shorts.

Theworldisnotenough on January 8, 2007 at 8:45 PM

I’d wager most of the deaths were from the 105mm howitzer in the AC130. It rocks! The 40mm’s clean up runners (the ones who die tired).

When I was at Ft. Benning we would hear them train with the gunship. It even sounds evil. The problem with being on the receiving end is that you have no idea where the incoming rounds are coming from. “Stuff” just starts blowing up with no directionality to the attack. I imagine the miscreants had a mad minute before going to hell.

It’s ironic that Ethiopia is teaching the U.S. how to wage war against these non-humans. Find them, fix them, kill them.

ReubenJCogburn on January 8, 2007 at 9:41 PM

It’s a wonderful prospect that we’re working in conjunction with (and likely helping in other ways behind the scenes?) regional powers like Ethiopia. It seems the combination of regional ground forces (and some US elites and/or CIA?) combined with US air power is very effective way to fight the Islamists–we bring the firepower from above, they bring the will to do what’s necessary, without the harping of American newscasters and Democrats, down below.

Speaking of the AC-130, it and the idea behind, going all the way back to the old DC-3 Spookies, seem to have been so successful you’d think the idea would’ve been implemented elsewhere. But I’m not aware of this having been done, even by the USSR/Russia (who you’d think would have had use for something like this in Afghanistan and Chechenya). However, I’m not as knowledgeable about their transport and support forces as I am their fast movers. Was there ever an “AC-130ski” I managed to miss? Or any other foreign implementation of the “aerial firebase” (for lack of a better term) concept?

VinceP1974 on January 8, 2007 at 10:17 PM

I don’t think the ruskies could deal with the effects of the recoil on the airframes; the 105mm torques the hell out of the tail section. Plus the targeting and airflow are major issues to overcome.

The follow on “big gun” is a smooth bore 120mm with lots of goodies to spit out. The “U” model is called Spookie.

The President noted that “the most powerful weapon in our counter-terrorism arsenal is our determination to never give up. In recent years we have captured major terrorists in the far corners of the world and brought them to America to answer for their crimes, sometimes years after they were committed.”

You gotta admit, though, they are really good at speeches. If we had a free and independent press in America, some enterprising young reported would take this part — “the most powerful weapon in our counter-terrorism arsenal is our determination to never give up” — and shove it up some Democrat’s ass, sideways.

GAWD! I LOVE those 130s!

I bet some dumbass jihadi looked up and said “See Achmed? We MUST be winning! We’re shooting down all of America’s invisable bomber jet planes and now all they have left is that prop plane. See? It’s not even aiming it’s nose at us. He must not even see us! Oh those American dummies! He’s gonna fly right past us… Hey, is that a laser coming out of the side?” Dead.

Speaking of the AC-130, it and the idea behind, going all the way back to the old DC-3 Spookies

Actually, the idea comes from back in the early days of air mail, and the need to pick up and deliver mail into areas where there was no way to land a plane, and the only ground access was wagon trails.

The pilot would go into a 30 degree left bank and a guy in the back would pay out a line with the mail being delivered that would go to the point of an inverted cone, the folks on the ground would take that off and attach the outgoing mail and the plane would reel it in.

Some enterprising Air Force wonk that was working on the problem of air support during ‘Nam remembered reading about this and DING!!!, the light went on. Instead of a line of rope, what about a line of fire-power??? The Gunship was born.

[Clinton] also stressed that “to pull back our diplomats and troops from the world’s trouble spots; to turn our backs on those taking risks for peace; to weaken our opposition to terrorism would give terrorism a victory it must not and will not have.” President Clinton ordered U.S. flags flown at half-staff on August 7, 1998, at all U.S. government buildings around the world.

And as for a C-130 with a cannon/gatlin gun: You can mop up stragglers or escaping vehicles with a C-130 loitering in the area more effectively and cheaply than by using really expensive guided missiles which need a laser painted on the target (boots on the ground), a jet painting the target, UAV loitering with only a few missiles or GPS co’ords which won’t track a moving vehicle.

Death from ABOVE!

Sounds like free and independent press in your mind means a tool of the right – not exactly my definition of independent.

I don’t care for the leftward slant either but the only way that will really change is for more politically moderate reporters to enter the profession and influence from within. Because many journalists enter after college and are influenced by the more idealistic, liberal teachings of many of their professors is it really a surprise?
Which, in my opinion, means people who REALLY want to change it and are equipped to do so, may be those who have some work and life experience first and would have to consider career changes to make that difference. Of course a pay cut may be involved in the beginning.

What part of ‘independent’ and ’some’ don’t you understand? An independent press would include every imaginable political orientation. Some would ask Dems to respond to the above quote. Others would hold Dubya’s feet to the fire on a Dem talking point. Others would fellate Obama. That’s ‘independent’.

What we have now is Pack Journalism. With the sole exception of FNC, the TV news people are virtually indistinguishable. Therefore FNC is considered ‘right wing’, or maybe even a ‘tool of the right’.

Pack journalism has been around for a very long time. What is new is the instant news access. Why aren’t there more journalists that identify themselves as “conservative”, libertarian, etc.?
I think the answer lies in the difference between what makes an idealogue and the idealist. The idealist presses ahead despite practical considerations such as wealth or security, thinking that they can make a difference.
Idealogues theorize – more comfortable position with little risk for most of the conservative stripe.

Bradky on January 9, 2007 at 1:50 PM

No, not really. I think it’s perfectly fair to ask Democrat leadership to contrast their position on Iraq and the war on terror with this rhetoric from Clinton. The unspoken question at the beginning of every military conflict that we engage in now, is “when will the Democrats start calling this ‘Vietnam’, declare defeat, and call for our withdrawal?”

I don’t care for the leftward slant either but the only way that will really change is for more politically moderate reporters to enter the profession and influence from within. Because many journalists enter after college and are influenced by the more idealistic, liberal teachings of many of their professors is it really a surprise?

This is a rare and shocking admission from a liberal, Brad, but actually few of these reporters are in their 20s, and I would have thought that some of them would have grown up by now. Isn’t it strange that 90+% of them remain left of center (or left of left) when the country overall is much more like 50 – 50? This sounds more like a weeding out of those who don’t follow the groupthink, a la academia. So having more reporters who are “politically moderate” isn’t really the solution, here, unless you are talking about firing all the reporters who exhibit leftwing bias, and then issuing 50 – 50 ideology quotas for all newspaper editors and tv producers.

How about you Jai? Wanna be a reporter?

Growing up is not the issue. If someone goes in young and follows a certain path it is reasonable to expect they develop blinders over time if they do no other kind of work. Why are so many people who decide to leave a career and teach in their fifties and beyond often very successful and happy? Because they have real world experience to apply. And as much as you would like for me to commit to some kind of quota solution – no that is not the answer either.

Idealogue – figured as much. Too comfortable to go out and do it the way you think it should be done? Mike Wallace is in his eighties and still reporting. Unless you are in your nineties “little late in the game” sounds like a cop out.

Don’t know why you keep harping on categorizing me as a liberal. The fact is you really have no idea what the true leanings of any of the posters here are.
