The Times should have obtained the text of the ruling of the three-judge panel before the article was published, but did not vigorously pursue the document until details of the ruling were brought to the attention of editors in late November. had their collective heads up their @sses as usual and decided to run with the story they wanted to be true, rather than checking the facts.

Didn’t previous information state the child was strangled, and that it was full term?

If so, how credible is an investigation that cannot tell the difference between an 18 week old baby and a full term one?

Also, why didn’t the Times correction state she was convicted of strangling her baby rather than “was born alive and died in its first minutes of life.”? Died in its first minutes of life makes it sound like the baby died naturally.

Did they run out of room on their correction page?

As for the number of screw-ups in the original article, one has to wonder why they went to press with it in the first place. Obviously there was a whole lot of checking that wasn’t done at all on this single article.

Are all the editors there too busy checking the next national security damaging classified information leak to check any other story?

The only thing that makes me smile about the mistake is that I can now say that I was right, and the science magazine was… wrong.

I don’t know why they changed my included text… but it seems that it’s everywhere (adjusted truth/facts).

I was shocked by the number of corrections as well. I don’t read the Times. Do they run a corrections page every day?
