Going to Iraq

Paging Kathleen Carroll

My blogging has been lighter than usual the past few weeks due to family time, Fox News duties, holiday chaos, holiday illness–and, yes, planning for a trip to Iraq. As you know, ex-CNN newsman Eason Jordan extended an invitation to me three weeks ago to go to Iraq to investigate the Associated Press/”Jamil Hussein” story. He offered to pay for a trip. As you’ll recall, I asked if he would offer to cover travel and security costs for Curt from Flopping Aces–who broke open the story of AP’s dubious sources on Thanksgiving weekend and continues to lead the blogospheric search for the truth. Jordan agreed.

I spoke with Jordan by phone before Christmas to learn more details of his offer, which I’m not going to get into for privacy and security reasons. (He asked that his discussion be off the record.) I let him know that I had received invitations to embed with the military and planned to follow up on some of these offers concurrently with the investigation of the AP’s reporting. Since our conversation, things have moved at a fast pace on the embed side. Over the holidays, my Hot Air colleague Bryan Preston and I received word that our embed applications had been approved. We have been busy preparing our families and ourselves for the journey. Our overarching goals are two-fold:

1) to report on how the troops perceive mainstream media coverage of the war (with a particular focus on the wire services relying on local stringers); and

2) to report on progress and interaction between U.S. troops and Iraqi Army trainees.

The “Jamil Hussein” story is one important item on our agenda, but not the only one. As Curt and other bloggers on this story have noted from the beginning, Jamilgate isn’t just about “Jamil Hussein.” Bryan and I plan to do as much on-the-ground reporting as we can to nail down unresolved questions–not only about Jamil Hussein and the Hurriya six burning Sunnis allegations, but also about the AP four burning mosque story discrepancies and the many other AP sources that our military has publicly challenged–including “Lt. Maitham Abdul Razzaq” and more than a dozen police officers listed by U.S. military spokesman Navy Lt. Michael Dean. There’s also the issue of detained AP photographer Bilal Hussein. And we are looking forward to reporting first-hand on the security situation in Iraq outside the so-called “Green Zone” (International Zone) and talking to as many American and Iraqi Army troops with insights on these and other broader matters.

I am very heartened by Eason Jordan’s post yesterday challenging the Associated Press’s credibility, but am puzzled that his own crew in Baghdad still has nothing new to report more than a month after bloggers first started raising questions. I hope Jordan follows up on the most recent investigative developments in the blogosphere. As of Dec. 21, the AP refuses to answer these simple questions:

1. Is Jamil Ghdaab Gulaim the real name of your oft-cited source, “Captain Jamil Hussein” aka ” Jamil Gholaiem Hussein?”

2. If not, where is “Captain Jamil Hussein” currently working? If he is a Baghdad police officer, as AP asserts, why hasn’t anyone — not CPATT, not MOI, not Marc Danzinger’s sources [nor Eason Jordan's] — been able to locate him?

3. What is your response to the CPATT officers’ report that Jamil Ghdaab Gulaim denies being AP’s source?

The reply from Linda Wagner, AP media relations officer, you’ll recall, was this:

Michelle-

I have no additional information for you at this time.

Linda

The reply from AP exec editor Kathleen Carroll…well, there was none.

Jordan has called on the AP to “to appoint an independent panel to determine the facts about the disputed report, to determine whether Iraqi Police Captain Jamil Hussein exists, and to share the panel’s full findings and recommendations with the public.”

I support that call. But I have decided not to wait on the AP or depend on Eason Jordan for answers and accountability. Bryan and I will be heading out to Iraq very shortly as embeds to advance the story and get first-hand the side of the story the AP refuses to hear–the side of the troops on the ground. (It is an expensive trip. If you’d like to pitch in, we’d greatly appreciate any help. PayPal button below.) You’ll start hearing from us soon. Stay tuned here and at HotAir.com. I’ll also be filing dispatches for the New York Post, which provided us with media accreditation.

I have notified Jordan of our plans and encouraged him to move forward with his trip and his offer to bring Curt of Flopping Aces.

More importantly, I have asked Jordan to extend the travel funds and security coverage he would have spent on me to the AP’s Kathleen Carroll.

Ms. Carroll, you may remember, was the AP executive who derided bloggers for sitting at home instead of traveling abroad to do their own reporting during the fauxtography debacle last summer:

“It’s hard to imagine how someone sitting in an air-conditioned office or broadcast studio many thousands of miles from the scene can decide what occurred on the ground with any degree of accuracy,” said Kathleen Carroll, AP’s senior vice president and executive editor.

Yet, from her own comfortable office, Ms. Carroll has decided that bloggers, Jordan, the U.S. military, and Iraqi government officials are all wrong to question her news organization’s questionable news sources:

Kathleen Carroll, AP executive editor, told E&P today that she had not read Jordan’s latest item, posted Monday, and likely would not. But she stood by the news organization’s previous statements backing the existence of an Iraqi police captain, Jamail (sic) Hussein.

“I’ve been pretty public about what we have done to get to the crux of the criticism we have gotten about it,” she added. When asked about critics’ demands that AP produce Hussein to prove his existence, she said “that area [where he works] has pretty much been ethnically cleansed, it is a nasty place and continues to be.”

It is unfortunate that this neighborhood has been reportedly rife with sectarian violence, but that doesn’t change the fact that there is no police captain named “Jamil Hussein” working now or ever in either Yarmouk or al Khadra, according to on-the-ground sources in Baghdad (see here and here).

Ms. Carroll, why not leave your “air-conditioned office…thousands of miles from the scene” and find out for yourself if “Jamil Hussein” is who AP says he is? Or is it the “do as I say” standard for bloggers and “not as I do” for MSM news executives in their high-rise offices in Manhattan?

Michelle, it’s been said before but bears repeating: be careful out there.

That being said, it’s hard to think of a better morale booster for the troops than to receive a visit from you. Bless you for what you are doing.

Spurius Ligustinus on January 3, 2007 at 11:22 AM

Gumballs!

You guys are the new media. Paypal seems to be on the fritz, but you can count on my support.

THIS is how you support the troops.

Pablo on January 3, 2007 at 11:22 AM

BE CAREFUL!! You may have more enemies over there than you realize.

RedWinged Blackbird on January 3, 2007 at 11:22 AM

God Bless and please return safe Michelle

Yes, be very careful and safe; we’ll be praying for yours and Bryan’s safe return.

Bryan on January 3, 2007 at 11:32 AM

We’ll be praying for ya back here, May God stand between you and harm in all the empty places you will walk

Defector01 on January 3, 2007 at 11:32 AM

Be careful and stay safe. You certainly have…what’s the word I’m looking for…Ba___.

When searched google about info on Michelle and Iraq, I came across a Wonkette article. It might be old news to some people, but I had not seen it yet, and was disgusted by it.

Michelle, Curt, and other accompanists (if any):

I hope you get chances to report back to the talkers and the cable news people on what is happening and what you are learning.

Yes, and be careful out there.

Please be safe Michelle and Bryan. I think I speak for everyone that we hope you have a productive trip and look forward to your reporting.

BTW, will you and Bryan be reprising your musical talents to entertain the troops?

God speed and good hunting!

JohnnyD on January 3, 2007 at 11:37 AM

Godspeed, Michelle. You all stay safe and I know you’ll find plenty to report back.

On a lighter note, I think RightWingDuck has a good guess on who Jamil Hussein actually is.

1. Oh my.

2. Bravo!

3. Good luck, and

4. God bless.

Don’t forget to wear your tees. I think a few pictures of you guys in these in the heart of Iraq would be pretty cool.

TexasRainmaker on January 3, 2007 at 11:40 AM

Michelle and Brian,

Be careful about the MSM attempts to call it even and work together on this. Blogs are a threat to their dominance over the last 30 years.

They will attempt to use a tactic called Embrace, Extend, Etinguish. They will temp you with legitimacy and acceptance. They will integrate you into their system and praise your creative innovations, then they will adopt competitors to counter you. They will overhype and occupy all your time with tasks. Then you will be extinguished.

Egfrow on January 3, 2007 at 11:41 AM

Stay safe and make us proud. Please tell the troops you interact with that there are still people here who support what they’re doing, and we support the mission. We’re proud of them, they should never forget that. Thank you Michelle, Bryan. We’re proud of both of you, too.

DakRoland on January 3, 2007 at 11:44 AM

Be safe you two. It’s great that you are willing to go to this length to get to the truth, but your safety comes first with us.

His tail was wagging when he said that.

Michelle and Bryan, Godspeed.

I started advertising Infidel Attire on Hot Air within the last month and I’m proud to be able to help out, in a small way, with this trip.

We all pray for your safety.

Maybe you can put a call through to Kathleen Carroll, once your embedded.

Stay safe & if you run into the NP and see a hunky guy with a funny last name with his new Major pinned on (or he may still be wearing the bars until I can pin it on him) with crystal blue eyes, that is my husband. He will take care of anything you need. God Bless and I am praying for all your safety. It’s pretty cold over there now so bring warm clothes but I guess you know that. Just stay safe and hope you “enjoy” your trip. I know you will enjoy seeing the troops and can tell you from my husband’s as well as my perspective we appreciate your going over there.

SAM 1X on January 3, 2007 at 12:39 PM

SOrry, I posted this earlier and am repeating it as an alternative explanation for Mr. Jordan’s inconsistent behavior. As an update comment, I’m glad to read now that Michelle is pressing forward. I believe it will be very, very rewarding in many ways and fascinating for her and any other bloggers/reporters who can go.

Occam’s Razor applies:
The bet was for bloggers to actually make a trip to GO to Iraq and take a look-see.
Perhaps to avoid making a trip he don’t want to make, no how, no way, perhaps Jordan has decided to punt – by writing a highly critical article. The bloggers are satisfied and voila no trip to Iraq apparently is necessary. End of issue. (He hopes?)
Seems to be even a more compelling reason to fly in and drink some nice hot mint tea and schmooze a while with the locals. Maybe Jordan is concerned that he would not be welcome in Iraq and would feel rather uncomfortable going there, perhaps being perceived by Iraqis as having been a reliable shill for Saddam for years. Maybe if a blogger or two ended up in Iraq, he or she would get an earful, an earful of not only about the AP, but also about Jordan himself. Remember how complicated and nuanced it was for Jordan regarding the arrangements? Yeh. Uh, huh.

Good luck and Godspeed Michelle. AFN carries Fox News so don’t be suprised if you are recognized. At the least expect a more positive reception than a certain Senator/joke botcher. If you head outside the wire with the troops, listen carefully to their instructions. Even if you are scared out of your wits, tell the soldiers that you feel safer because you are with them and they will do whatever it takes to get you back safe.

In all seriousness, I have tremendous respect for the Hot Air crew for picking up the gauntlet and running with it. Take that, you “thousands of miles away” biased news service editors…

Pleeeese tell every American serviceperson you meet how much we appreciate them and are waiting on their safe return. Heros all.

Looking forward with great anticipation your reports and videos of what is really happening over there, good and bad. My view of Iraq, from reports I have gleened on the net, is that most of Iraq is stable with most of the strife centered in Bagdad. I am curious to find out what you guys find out and how that may change or confirm my impressions of the country.

Good luck, good reporting, and may God bless your journey.

Mallard T. Drake on January 3, 2007 at 1:06 PM

Mrs Malkin may want to consider buying a burka before boarding for Baghdad, just in case. And I suppose it goes without saying that you should both stay as discreet as possible, which means that if you can afford (go paypal go) to hire some of them handy “contractors”, get as many as you can, but be sure to fan them out.

You know, and all sarcasm aside, I don’t think it would be legal for them to be “packing”. They will be after all, foreigners on foreign soil. I don’t think it’s legal for just anyone to be carrying a firearm in the States either. At least, I hope it isn’t.

No, I’d go with the burka. Bryan too for that matter. I’ve read the SAS have been scurrying about in them very successfully. IN IRAN!

Ahh, yes, sarcasm and snarkiness. It allows a “man” to say what he really means, without really “meaning” it.

By the way, how does being “discreet” mean hire “as many as you can” afford of those “contractors”? Wouldn’t that tend to increase her “footprint”?

The beast is already wounded thanks to you guys, it just doesn’t feel the pain yet. It will. With hard work & some luck you’ll ram the javelin into that carcass a few feet more and break it off inside ‘em. Here’s to anticipating a job well done!

And it would be great to land some *pictures* of those four “damanged” mosques. Just remember, if you hire stringers to snap the pics, be sure to hire at least a couple and compare the results!! (Just kidding :-)

Get us the Truth, ma’am. Make sure you go with the military to those mosques. If they aren’t trying to find out the Truth as well, I want to know why.

If we (the United States Armed Forces in particular) don’t start fighting the information war in the Middle East, we’ll never end this conflict. Please ask what they are doing and how we can help. Particularly, how can we shame Hollywood into helping instead of hindering the war effort?

Through his first hand experience my son has told me of the truth that you seek, the truth yet to be told in the depth it deserves.

You will be in good hands with our troops. They will keep you safe in the field and share their stories in the mess halls.

Godspeed.

Bryan! Make certain that you get photos/video of Michelle eating in the mess-halls. I can’t wait to compare photos.

1) John Kerry eating at the mess hall in Iraq.
2) Michelle Malkin eating at the mess hall in Iraq.

Two words:

Travel Insurance.

Stay safe.

Rich on January 3, 2007 at 3:36 PM

Go with God and come home safe!
Please let the troops know how much we love and appreciate them, too.

Onward Michelle…

Be safe.

Wow – I have been so in awe of your dedication, but this goes beyond what most journalists (or Americans) would do. Not only does it say a lot about you and your dedication, but it also says volumes about the tremendous support of your families. (And how hard it will be to be away from your babies!)

Please be careful — jihadists read blogs, too, and I imagine that they are not too happy with you.

May God bless you and your families. (And way to go! We look forward to your reports!!!!!)

I still suggest semi-auto Colt 45 (15 rd clip) w/ three extra clips, frag grenade, and for backup .45 colt/.410 derringer in the boot. I gave in and donated $50. Hope it helps.

Michelle, Bryan, give ‘em hell. We’re proud of you and will look forward to your safe return.

My gun nut buddy said to get a “GLOCK model 34 with 4 extra mags and an AKS74U in the briefcase” then he said “strike that, Yugoslavian M92 in the case (better ammo/magazine resupply)” What I’m saying is take all precautions!

Drtuddle on January 3, 2007 at 4:38 PM

Donation made! good luck!!

you know michelle i take from your post and your tv spots that you are very head strong. i know you have a passion for the truth. and we know it is bad there maybe not as bad as the main stream media portrays it, but for Gods sake don’t to nothing stupid. don’t insit on going some where you should not go, talk to people you should not talk to and keep you ass down. you are a mother and wife first and you have not taken a oath to protect and defend the consitution. just be safe. jamil who ever and mosque gate or what ever else is not worth your life.

Michelle: “I let him know that I had received invitations to embed with the military ….”

I’ll bet. I imagine there are a lot of guys out there in the desert who haven’t seen a real American woman in months who would just die to host cute little Michelle in their unit. My advice is to take it easy on the perfume. You don’t want to drive these guys too crazy. Their only company have been camel spiders. Too much Giorgio and they could explode like IEDs.

It certainly would be interesting to see and read interviews from our guys at the tip of the spear probing the hot spots of Iraq and compare their accounts with the MSM narrative of doom and despair. It would also be interesting to hear from the Unheard, the guys in the cold spots in Iraq where boring progress is being made, where nothing bleeds to lead the news. Let’s have a look at the schools and roads and water supply and infrastructure being repaired or built and how that has affected ordinary Iraqis. How do the Iraqis feel about Saddam’s departure? How do Iraqi women react to Michelle and to female US military?

Of course, be careful, Michelle, honey. We like you just the way you are. We don’t want anything added or subtracted. We want to hear your stories, but we don’t want them written in blood.

Tantor on January 3, 2007 at 5:54 PM

Sweet. Good for you, Michelle and Bryan…Godspeed and rake up some muck.

I can’t WAIT to hear what goes down with those two on the loose in Iraq!

Bob's Kid on January 3, 2007 at 6:07 PM

Oh, and I recommend bringing along a lot of hankies…I know that if I were going over there to meet with our boys and girls I’d be teary-eyed more often than not–with pride and with appreciation and with amazement.

So don’t forget the hankies.

Bob's Kid on January 3, 2007 at 6:23 PM

You guys rock.

May the Lord bless you and keep you.

hillbillyjim on January 3, 2007 at 6:25 PM

Well, if Hannity and O’Reilley can do it….Why not Michelle Malkin??
Take the men some new Gold Toe socks or something for a late Christmas present.
