Mexico to equip illegals with satnav devices

It’s the immigration equivalent of the condoms-in-schools debate. Is it better to outfit people with safety equipment that makes them more likely to engage in bad behavior? Or do you withhold the equipment and hope that the increased risk scares some away?
Click through and follow along as the British author wonders how illegals will obtain the devices from the Mexican government when that would mean notifying them of their intent to commit a crime.
Yep, that’s a real headscratcher, all right.
Thanks to norm for the tip.
Exit question: Does the device come with the comic book?

…because Mexico’s economy is soooo good that they can afford to hand out electronics most Americans don’t have, right?
James on January 2, 2007 at 3:40 PM
This whole smoke screen moral equivelent game with mexico is really starting to get on my nerves.
What makes me more angry is that our elected officials are doing nothing about it.
One Angry Christian on January 2, 2007 at 3:40 PM
Now the soldiers of the invasion are being armed with gps’. Mexico is not our friend. The US needs to wake up to this. They will continue to export their poverty to us for as long as we let them. Jorge is one of them, he will do nothing. It’s up to us.
voiceofreason on January 2, 2007 at 3:43 PM
Yeah yeah. What else is new? Welcome to Aztlan.

I demand the Mexican government print those comic books with English subtitles for those of us that just speak American.

I wonder how difficult it would be to build a jamming device for the satellite tracking system?

Kids don’t break laws with condoms.

I’m thinking we need to be involved with the production of said devices, say make sure they’re built with a transmitter?
Then just go round em up like sheep.
Instead, they’re like trying to herd cats if we don’t build a BIG LONG WALL.
shooter on January 2, 2007 at 4:04 PM
A virtual wall could work – if it was enforced. Securing the border now should be our number one priority. Eventually a porous border will ultimately be its demise. Potential terrorist infiltration bringing devastation will force us to know who is in our country.

Where are the techno-geeks when you need them?
Slublog on January 2, 2007 at 4:12 PM
Gregor, you beat me to it – heard about that this morning on the radio. Maybe now the Democrats will get on board with fixing Social Security.
It also proves how deceiving our government is, from both isles.

How long till they supply weapons and armed escorts to protect them from the border patrol?

Everyone needs to read this. All Bush has to do is sign it and it becomes law. (Gee, what are the chances Bush will sign away billions in our FICA taxes to illegal immigrants?) Congress has 60 days to veto this once Bush signs, but it never needed Congressional approval.
Valiant on January 2, 2007 at 4:26 PM
What ever happened to the HotAir North American Union poll? Come on Allah. Just open up a thread and ask people to vote yes, no, or maybe on whether they believe it.
Who’s picture is going to be on the first Dollero ever printed?
This guy?
Or maybe this guy?

To stop illegal immigration, revamping the VISA system is advisable. There should be a system that makes it easy for them to leave and come in. The U.S can follow the U.K
VISA system, which gives visitors the flexibility to come in and leave for a longer period. The requirements–a stipulated amount in a bank–for a getting temporary VISA is ridiculous. Only rich people can fulfill them.

And then when this guy is done turning us into an Islamic Aztlan … our kids will finally be allowed to pray in school. Five times a day.
Gregor on January 2, 2007 at 4:36 PM
Not very. You just flood the frequency band with noise. You just need antennas and power and the willpower to do it.

Ridiculous. Guys NEVER ask for directions.
Attila (Pillage Idiot) on January 2, 2007 at 4:42 PM
We need to do the Neal Boortz idea…build the wall ourselves.
SouthernGent on January 2, 2007 at 4:55 PM
Yeah, there’s been property owners along the border who have tried that and our own government slaps them with fines and threats to take their land away.
The situation is pretty much out of control and the only way it’s going to stop is for Americans to revolt – physically.
Gregor on January 2, 2007 at 5:07 PM
An awful lot of conspiracy theory nuts around here lately, huh? As long as you call them conspiracy theory nuts, you never have to answer up about the facts.
The sheep are insulted, and will bleat you to death, infidel.
Freelancer on January 2, 2007 at 5:17 PM
A wall? How ’bout a “virtual” wall made up of land mines?
How ’bout we pull a Bugs Bunny and SAW Mexico off and let it float away?
This whole “do nothing” stategery doesn’t seem to be workin’.
“Guys NEVER ask for directions” Hahahahahahahaaaaaa Nice work, Attila.
Tony737 on January 2, 2007 at 5:59 PM
Very difficult, they are transmitted by maybe twelve different satelites, the same GPS that guides our planes most military (some military is a different frequency). Jam those and you are in deep doo doo.
I never thought I would see the day of the U.S. inviting an invasion. Now there is an oxymoron.

I saw this headline yesterday and found it hard to believe…Are you sure this isn’t from The Onion???!!!
Unfrigginbelievable……I’ve heard about pushing the envelope but this goes beyond the pale!!
Mellen on January 2, 2007 at 8:35 PM
An invasion by anyother name, is still an invasion!
So why shouldn’t we cruise missle bomb Mexico City?
byteshredder on January 2, 2007 at 9:05 PM
From a purely technical standpoint, you could jam the GPS signals at ground level. Wouldn’t affect aircraft, but would affect the same military/law enforcement folks guarding the border unless you use directional antennas that only flood Mexican areas with the jamming signal. A relatively simple technical solution, but probably a bitch to install.
I’m still OK with the wall and a lot more enforcement. I wouldn’t object to improving the prcess for legal immigration, but not at the expense of securing our borders.
old_dawg on January 2, 2007 at 11:04 PM
The article isn’t very clear, but it seems to me that they are issuing Personal Locator Beacons to the illegal immigrants.
These are not used for navigation. PLBs are registered to each individual owner, and are only to be used in a life threatening emergency. If the user becomes lost or injured, he activates the device, and international Search and Rescue authorities are automatically notified and given the location of the device.
Yes, the device transmits the location of the user.
No, you had sure as heck better not jam them, because hikers and other outdoor users depend on these for their lives to be saved.
Just google “personal locator beacon” for more info.

If Mexico is going to hand out GPS receivers to illegal immigrants then why doesn’t the US hand out similar-looking GPS receivers that will direct the immigrants to big traps where the Border Patrol can collect them?
