Saddam to hang today? Report: Final preparations

Maliki wants it done by Sunday, but like Ed says, we wouldn’t transfer him to the Iraqis unless the execution was imminent. The risk of someone on their side tipping the jihadis to his whereabouts or even trying to bust him out themselves is too great. Baghdad is eight hours ahead of us; don’t be surprised if there’s big breaking news this afternoon a little after 4 p.m. eastern time.

ABC and CBS say they won’t air the execution video if it’s released. CNN and Fox are mulling. Who cares? It’ll be all over the Internet, including right here, within hours.

In the meantime, proceed directly to INDC Journal, where Bill Ardolino is on the ground in Kuwait killing time while he prepares to cross over into Iraq. He’s just returned with photos from the national “Not to Forget Museum” — as Bill describes it, “a timely place to be, given Hussein’s rapidly approaching rope-dance for crimes against humanity; if some in the West blithely shrug their shoulders at the atrocities and wars of conquest endeavored by the Iraqi Baath regime, the government of Kuwait and many of its citizens do not.” All kinds of photos at the link, some of them moving (scenes of Iraqi brutality recreated with toy soldiers), others zesty with schadenfreude (a display case featuring Uday Hussein’s pimp robe). This one was my favorite. Crotch-high, you’ll note.

kuwait2.jpg

Update: “As early as Saturday morning in Iraq.”

Update: Bill Buckley’s going to enjoy it. Guiltily, but nonetheless:

What is going to happen is an outcry against capital punishment, and we are obliged to listen to what will be said and to weigh the arguments, even if we have wrestled with the dilemma before. But we are entitled, also, to satisfaction from what is about to happen…

It was rumored, in 1946, that the hangman in Nuremberg adjusted the nooses of some of the condemned to magnify the pain of suffocation. Such sadism was not called for then and is not called for now. But if fornication is wrong, there is no denying that it can bring pleasure. The death of Saddam Hussein at rope’s end brings a pleasure that is undeniable, and absolutely chaste in its provenance.

He’s wrong. There won’t be much complaining about the death penalty; Saddam’s too much of a monster to be cast as a victim. The complaints will be the same as they always are on those rare occasions when there’s good news from Iraq: it won’t change anything, it might make things worse, it doesn’t matter in the bigger picture, and we right-wingers are only interested in it because it’s a “distraction” from everything else that’s happening. The Eric Boehlert response, in other words.

Update: He’s been transferred. Fox just broke in to say that, according to an Iraqi judge, it’ll happen tomorrow at the latest to make sure it’s done before Eid.

Update: Fox is saying now that, according to one official, the U.S. still has him. Maybe it’s disinfo to throw the jihadis off.

Update: It’s 2:48 and Fox just broke in to say, according to an unnamed Iraqi MP, the execution’s “imminent” and that he’s been handed over to them. Meanwhile, ABC News is hearing that it’ll happen over the weekend and that Saddam will remain in U.S. custody until it does. It’s got to be disinformation. I hope so, anyway — otherwise it means the military had to renege on their plan to transfer him, which can’t be good no matter what the explanation.

Update: A “top Iraqi official” tells the AP that Saddam will be executed by 6 a.m. Baghdad time. That’s 10 p.m. here on the east coast.

Update: The AP says it’s happening between 9:30 and 10, but Fox says the official witnesses have already gathered and CNN quotes two Arabic TV stations as saying it could come within the next hour. It’s a little after 7 p.m. as I write this.

Update: 9:40 ET. Fox says the final preparations are under way.

Let’s get it on already. I’ve got things to do.

I like the new “fixture”. Adds “something” to an otherwise dull garden party.

tormod on December 29, 2006 at 11:01 AM

I met a young girl from Kuwait a couple of years ago. She and her family were so grateful to the US. She talked about Saddam and how members of her family were killed by him. She laughed about him being found “in a hole” and was sincerely appreciative of the USA. Her wish was to come to America some day to visit and see Ground Zero to pay her respects.
I bet the minute they announce old Saddam is no more the celebration in Kuwait and Iraqi Kurdistan will be heard round the world!

labwrs on December 29, 2006 at 11:01 AM

I’m waiting with baited modem for that video.

May his executioner use a very short drop.

There won’t be much complaining about the death penalty; Saddam’s too much of a monster to be cast as a victim.

From Althouse on Wednesday:

In his farewell letter, Saddam calls on Iraqis “not to hate”:

[quotation omitted]

Much as I assume this language is utterly conniving and self-serving, I hope it will nevertheless do some good. And I feel compelled to restate my deep-seated opposition to the death penalty. No matter how much of a beast the condemned man is, it is wrong to inflict death on someone who has been completely incapacitated.

Well, that sure is a test of her opposition to capital punishment. Great to have principles, isn’t it?

Attila (Pillage Idiot) on December 29, 2006 at 11:34 AM

The wine and cheese are ready, couple of neighbors are coming over. If it happens, we party…
Got my big screen, hope it is on HD.

right2bright on December 29, 2006 at 11:44 AM

Reuters is now reporting that Saddam has been haned over to the Iraqi authorities.

O, Death
O, Death
Won’t you spare me over til another year
Well what is this that I can’t see
With ice cold hands takin’ hold of me
Well I am death, none can excel
I’ll open the door to heaven or hell

Whoa, death someone would pray
Could you wait to call me another day
The children prayed, the preacher preached
Time and mercy is out of your reach
I’ll fix your feet til you cant walk
I’ll lock your jaw til you cant talk
I’ll close your eyes so you can’t see
This very air, come and go with me
I’m death I come to take the soul
Leave the body and leave it cold
To draw up the flesh off of the frame
Dirt and worm both have a claim

O, Death
O, Death
Won’t you spare me over til another year
My mother came to my bed
Placed a cold towel upon my head
My head is warm my feet are cold
Death is a-movin upon my soul
Oh, death how you’re treatin’ me
You’ve close my eyes so I can’t see
Well you’re hurtin’ my body
You make me cold
You run my life right outta my soul
Oh death please consider my age
Please don’t take me at this stage
My wealth is all at your command
If you will move your icy hand
Oh the young, the rich or poor
Hunger like me you know
No wealth, no ruin, no silver no gold
Nothing satisfies me but your soul

O, death
O, death
Wont you spare me over til another year
Wont you spare me over til another year
Wont you spare me over til another year

I’ll get nothing out of the process of executing Saddam. I’ll just be glad he is gone.

tommy1 on December 29, 2006 at 12:06 PM

I, for one, take no joy in this man’s execution. I support capital punishment, but I never take joy when it has to be used. Make no mistake, this man has earned his sentence. I will not be one to watch the video, it will be enough for me to know that he has been sent on to see the real Judge in Heaven. I will pray for his soul, as I do all our enemies. We, on earth, have no chance of changing their hearts and minds. Only our heavenly Father can do that.

God Bless Our Troops, and stay safe as possible in the aftermath of this very necessary execution.

On a side note, it cracks me up about CNN mulling over whether show his execution. Must be because he’s not an American Soldier that they won’t automatically show it. I guarantee, if they do show it, they will try to twist it into a defeat for America.

still468 on December 29, 2006 at 12:16 PM

Do we hafta hang him? Can’t we get a little more creative than that? Can’t we fire him out of a cannon or something? Remember when he was building his ultimate “supercannon”? He wanted this cannon to be so long that is leaned against a hillside and could fire shells all the way to Israel. I think the man’s got major penis envy for the Israelis! Anyway, drop him in that thing and shoot him OVER Israel and into the Med Sea!

Tony737 on December 29, 2006 at 12:24 PM

No matter how much of a beast the condemned man is, it is wrong to inflict death on someone who has been completely incapacitated.

So, is Althouse calling for gladiator fights? PPV? I’m cool with that. :-)

EF on December 29, 2006 at 12:26 PM

I won’t take any great joy over a man’s hanging either, no matter who. I will, however, take satifaction in the knowledge that he is gone.

If only we could get John Madden on the replay, complete with telestrater. ‘Here comes the executioner around the right side and WHAM, the man is goes down. Now let’s go out to the tailgate party and grab some drumsticks.’

That is why people like Saddam keep popping up. When we have the opportunity to remove true evil, we should rejoice in it. The fact that many thousands will live in peace someday makes me happy to destroy evil. If every evil dictator knew, with certainty, that his life is short lived, their would be a lot more job openings for dictators.
I want him to die knowing that many milions are happy and relieved that he is eliminated from this earth. Everytime evil is defeated, it brings a smile to my heart.

right2bright on December 29, 2006 at 12:38 PM

Drudge has a Headline that Saddam has been handed over…

dallas94 on December 29, 2006 at 12:41 PM

The deterrent is not the knowledge that we will rejoice in the death of this man. It is the fact that we have demonstrated the steel and determination to do what has to be done, without remorse and with cold, hard judgement.

KennyB on December 29, 2006 at 12:44 PM

The Fox source for the “Saddam still in US custody” is the State Department, and they’re “absolutely certain”. Take that for what it’s worth.

(pointing with the magic write-on-the-screen pen) You see how this guard came up on the right and forced Saddam into that hole there, then this other guard sandwiched him; there was only one way for Saddam to go and bam! the executioner nails him!

Kid from Brooklyn on December 29, 2006 at 1:47 PM

FWIW, me source who told me his execution would be at midnight, Baghdad time, just emailed to reconfirm that is still the schedule as he understands it; Drudge has Rueters corroborating the “within hours” claim.

labwrs on December 29, 2006 at 2:35 PM

Midnight, you say? Groovy. That’s 3 pm in the land of cheese and beer.

Fox News is quoting the Iraqi MP that Saddam is in Iraqi custody, all the paperwork is in order, and execution is “within hours”.

steveegg on December 29, 2006 at 2:47 PM

I bet that he kicks exactly 3 times.

georgej on December 29, 2006 at 2:52 PM

Word on the street in Baghdad is that the mortars have died down. I hear unusual quiet, and people coming out of their houses. Expect mass celebration in the streets once word of the hanging gets out.

Kid from Brooklyn on December 29, 2006 at 2:53 PM

That should have read, “I hear of unusual quiet…” Seeing as how I’m nowhere near Dad’s Bag. Sorry.

Kid from Brooklyn on December 29, 2006 at 2:54 PM

I’ll go with 2 kicks.

Goodbye Saddam. Enjoy your next trial. Try to not mock The Judge as much this time, I doubt He will be as forgiving. Your punishment on Earth for your crimes will soon come to an end. It will pale in comparison to the punishment you will soon face.

Mojave Mark on December 29, 2006 at 3:27 PM

Entelechy on December 29, 2006 at 3:19 PM

Absolutely, and when the killing begins, we begin. We should not tolerate mass murderers. North Korea should be next. To stand by and watch tens of thousands of people brutally murdered, children starved to death, it is un-real. Churchill had the right idea, destroy evil before it destroys you.

right2bright on December 29, 2006 at 3:46 PM

The only person around here who will be sad is Honora. She actually believes that Iraq was better off under Saddam than they are now. I wish she could have seen the look in my nephews eyes when he was expaining what he saw in Saddam’s torture chambers. None of us have ever, could ever, contemplate such evil. Even after seeing it with his own eyes he could not comprehend such evil. He said all you could do is kneel, pray, and cry for the many who died at the hands of this monster.

right2bright on December 29, 2006 at 4:00 PM

The only person around here who will be sad is

Rut roh! Now you’ve done it! Very soon we’ll be scolded about how hypocritical conservatives are for opposing abortion but siding with Saddam’s sentence. The finger-wagging will then continue as the Spanish Inquisition and Crusades are invoked.

Meanwhile, I’m sure Cindy Shehag is doing the littlest hunger strike in the world on Saddam’s behalf right now. Its a tough job, but somebody has to have the courage to do it!

Dave Shay on December 29, 2006 at 4:11 PM

What? Someone is blocking the transfer, just on Drudge.

Here’s the related article: http://www.breitbart.com/news/2006/12/29/D8MAODM80.html

Lawyers for Saddam Hussein on Friday made a last-minute appeal to an American court to avert execution in Iraq, asking a judge to block his transfer from U.S. custody to the hands of Iraqi officials.

You have GOT to be kidding me.

A similar request by the former chief justice of the Revolutionary Court, Awad Hamed al-Bandar, was denied Thursday and is under appeal. Al-Bandar also faces execution. The Justice Department argued in that case that U.S. courts have no jurisdiction to interfere with the judicial process of another country.

Maybe they could get the Florida Supreme Court to block it, or are they shopping the 9th Circuit in California? Surely CAIR and the ACLU should be allowed to weigh in on this, too.

Dave Shay on December 29, 2006 at 4:35 PM

I love how these capital trials that develop over the course of years (in this case, 3?) always seem to come down to the last few hours. I’m reminded of Gene Wilder from the original Willy Wonka (as Augustus is clogging up the pipe leading into the fudge room):

“The suspense is killing me; I hope it lasts!”

Dave Shay on December 29, 2006 at 4:40 PM

The NYT will also be in mourning over the hanging.

But, heh, they can go ahead now – Kirsten Powers said on “Your World” on Fox that “the trial was flawed but Saddam is guilty”.

Entelechy on December 29, 2006 at 4:46 PM

The liberal inmates over at DUmmieland are mourning the loss of Saddam.

Enoxo on December 29, 2006 at 4:56 PM

When he is hanged , we here in America probably won`t see a thing. Our media would much rather show our soldiers being shot or dragged through the streets than to show an event that demonstrates that our military has accomplished something it set out to do..to get rid of a dictator. Any American defeat they love to report on but when we do something right they`d rather have their fingernails ripped out than give credit.

Lou on December 29, 2006 at 4:56 PM

I knew some help from the US of wussitude would be requested. I’m seriously praying that this Judge does not make our country look even weaker by giving any sort of creedence to this request.

bbz123 on December 29, 2006 at 5:14 PM

From today’s NYT Op-Ed entitled “The Rush to Hang Saddam Hussein”:

“What really mattered was whether an Iraq freed from his death grip could hold him accountable in a way that nurtured hope for a better future.”

Apparently, anything turning out contrary to the Times’ terrorist-coddling desires constitues a “rush to judgment.” Three-year trial before a finding of guilt? A rush to judgment. Twelve years and seventeen U.S. sanctions prior to forced regime change? Again, a rush to judgment.

And as even the Times surely must know, “what really matters” in a criminal trial (especially one conducted for a murderous genocidal dictator like Saddam) is the presentation of evidence and a determination of guilt or innocence, not the nurturing of some hypothetical national hope for a better future.

By their reasoning, all trials in the U.S. would be similarly deficient — “can’t we all hope for a better future where no one feels the need to commit crimes, and where we as a people become so compassionate we only try to help rather than imprison defendants?” and so on.

In this instance, Hussein admitted in open court that the evidence presented against him was accurate (albeit with a claim of executive immunity), and had ample opportunity to present his side of the case. Since his fate was apparently believed to be a foregone conclusion, Saddam instead chose to turn his trial into a political circus in order to garner sympathy from Western media sympathetic to his plight vis-a-vis his removal from office by President Bush.

Looks like he found his stooge.
