Somali Islamists Still Getting Butts Kicked (update)

posted at 6:10 pm on December 27, 2006 by see-dubya

Ethiopia’s trying to beat Israel’s six-day record. Their army is fifteen miles from Mogadishu, and the Islamists are turning tail:

The young fighters of the Shebab, the backbone of the Islamists’ army, whose name comes from the Arabic word for youth, are deserting in droves.

“We can’t resist,” said Musa Abdullahi, 18, who quit his unit after half his comrades were cut down by Ethiopian helicopter gunships. “We thought this fighting would be like the others. It’s not.”

It’s hard when there are armed men with guns shooting back at you instead of women and children running away, Musa.

And here’s one for the “war never solves anything” crowd:

…the goodwill they [the Islamists] earned is being sapped away by their decision to attack the transitional government and declare a holy war against Christian-led Ethiopia. That provoked a crushing counterattack by the Ethiopians, who have the strongest military in East Africa and have sided with the transitional government because Ethiopia views the Islamists as a threat to its own security.

Residents in one of Mogadishu’s slums threw rocks at the Islamists’ pick-up trucks today.

Ahmed Nur Bilal, a retired Somali National Army general, said the war had been a horrible miscalculation.

Ethiopia still says it doesn’t want to occupy Mogadishu, but they may have to in order to root this problem out. As long as they fight hard and demonstrate resolve there is no stopping them–unless diplomats and internationalists talk them out of fighting.

Hmmm…there’s a lesson here somewhere.

QUICK UPDATE: This guy wins the Baghdad Bob Award:

Leaders of the Islamic movement have said that the war is merely “entering a new phase.” The movement’s leader Sheik Mohamoud Ibrahim Suley told the Associated Press on Wednesday that “our snakes of defense were let loose, now they are ready to bite the enemy everywhere in Somalia.”

They may yet launch a guerilla war, but I don’t think Ethiopia is going to be particularly scrupulous in how they counter an insurgency. That might just backfire as well.

Can we get some of those in Iraq? PUHLEEEEEEEEEEEZ?

One Angry Christian on December 27, 2006 at 6:12 PM

Getting their assed whupped by the Ethiopians should shame the Islamists forever.

I’d feel sorry for them were they only human.

JammieWearingFool on December 27, 2006 at 6:12 PM

This is one of those “Whodathunkit” moments, Ethiopia of all contenders showing the world how to do this right.
I agree, they should ignore ALL world opinion and just git ‘er done.

We have guys much better than that in Iraq. The only problem is that W won’t turn them loose.

Yep! Take us to their leader as we do not have one.

Wade on December 27, 2006 at 6:28 PM

You all remember how easily we took Baghdad, right? I’m not saying they will lose, but a little caution is in order before claiming victory. If history is any indication … Ethiopia and Somalia could soon be facing the reality of suicide bombers, elementary school mass slaughters, and other random acts of terrorism, and we know that’s much tougher to defend against than an oncoming army of cavemen.

Gregor on December 27, 2006 at 6:29 PM

If only our military was allowed to fight without all the constraints placed on them like the Ethiopians….sigh….one can dream, right?

Go Ethiopia!! Kick some ass!!!

kcluva on December 27, 2006 at 6:30 PM

Ethiopia’s army seems really badass. Do you think we could convince them to help us in Iraq after they finish off they Islamists in Somalia.

JaHerer22 on December 27, 2006 at 6:31 PM

Residents in one of Mogadishu’s slums threw rocks at the Islamists’ pick-up trucks today.

Ahmed Nur Bilal, a retired Somali National Army general, said the war had been a horrible miscalculation. What made him especially mad, he said, was the Islamists’ reliance on adolescent boys to do most of the fighting. One of the first things the Islamists did after the fighting started was to close all schools in Mogadishu to send more young people to the front. Witnesses to some of the battles said the teenage troops were no match for the better-trained, better-equipped Ethiopian-backed forces who summarily mowed them down.

“They’ve misled our children to their deaths,” Mr. Bilal said.

Brave jihadis, they are.

JammieWearingFool on December 27, 2006 at 6:35 PM

We just need to tell our boys one thing… “SCORCHED EARTH”.

E L Frederick (Sniper One) on December 27, 2006 at 6:38 PM

Is there a minimum age required to receive the 72 virgins? Guess their families can all celebrate now.

Hmmmmm….

The Islamists get their butts kicked in Afghanistan.
The Islamists continue to get their butts kicked in Iraq.
Tje Islamists get their butts kicked in Somalia.

Do you suppose Allah is trying to tell them something?

Huh?

Did they get their butts kicked in Lebanon too?

Yes, we’re “kicking their ass” in number of deaths … but they are kicking ours as far as sheer will. To state that we’re kicking thier ass at the same time our cowards in Congress are debating how fast to run away … is a bit over-reaching. And Olmert is still feeling the pain in Israel.

I agree with that statement on a political basis, but not on a military one.

Yes they got their butts kicked in Lebanon, are you believing their claims of victory in Lebanon?? Just because they say that they won doesn’t make it true, even my freakin 4 year old knows that much. flipflop, you are right on the money, our military has tremendous will, it’s the politicians that make up these freakin idiotic rules of engagement. I’m glad to hear Ethiopia is whoopin some tail, I hope they don’t stop until all of the jihadis are room temp., no stupid peace treaties!!

We’ve kicked their arses as well. It’s just that Congress and the old media handed them victories in world opinion. When it comes time to fight again I say we send Congress and the old media. I can see it now > 1st Division, 3rd Brigade NY Times joined 3rd Division LA Times reinforcements in a daring retreat today. No life was lost but several soiled Hanes were later found near the latreen.

Griz on December 27, 2006 at 8:03 PM

It is a disgrace that the leaders of, a 3rd world East African, nation has the backbone, with balls attached, to do what the spineless leaders, casterated years ago, of the United States do not.

Maybe our first black President should be Ethiopian. How about or first black female President to be Ethiopian. At least she would have bigger balls than our current leadership.

Helloyawl on December 27, 2006 at 8:12 PM

So now we know — the trick is to not shilly shally around for years waiting for permission from the UN. That lets the journalists get their visas and shots and get to the location in question. Just cowboy up and lay waste to the enemy before the NYT can even assign somebody to cover the battle.

Bad Penny on December 27, 2006 at 8:32 PM

“our snakes of defense were let loose, now they are ready to bite the enemy everywhere in Somalia.”

Maybe that sounds good in Arabic, but it makes me want to giggle like a schoolgirl.

CrankyNeocon on December 27, 2006 at 8:50 PM

That might just backfire as well.

I doubt it considering that the press corps is too chicken to go out into a real war and see stuff first hand. They’ll get “stories” whether it happens or not. I don’t think Ethiopia cares much, and I don’t think they’d hesitate to “accidentally” take out any stringers.

“All’s fair in Love and war”

Maybe not so for the US, but for ethiopia

yeah.

Yes, militarily we are kicking their butts. As for “politically” it depends on who you want to believe – the MSM or History. Lets not forget, the same MSM claimed we were “losing the peace” and whined about German insurgents after WW2.

flipflop on December 27, 2006 at 6:53 PM

Most definitely agree. Our soldiers have been awsome. It’s politics as usual.

Gregor…

Yes they got their butts kicked in Lebanon, are you believing their claims of victory in Lebanon??

Yes. Even Israel says they lost. Why wouldn’t I?

Again, the soldiers did not lose the physical battle, but the leaders refused to allow them to actually conduct war. Therefore, they most definitely got their asses kicked. It’s not possible to claim victory when you run away, is it? Did Israel gain anything from the war? Did they accomplish their objective? Is Hezbollah weaker, or more powerful as a result?

Those answers are obvious, and make it impossible to deny which side lost that war.

Much the same questions can be asked of us.

Have we gained anything from this war so far? I don’t think so. Have we accomplished our objective? No way. Since the war was based on the concept of fighting “terrorism” … are there more terrorists now, than before? Or less? I believe the answer to that would be far more. Why? Because our inept President and Donald Rumsfeld have somehow been unable to stop the constant flow of hundreds of thousands of people, and massive shipments of weapons from crossing the border into Iraq. How is that? With our technology, our satellites, our numbers? A fourth grader can figure out that the way to win this war is to stop the flow of insurgents, and to disarm the enemy. We have the finest military in the world, and technology that can snap pictures of a zit on bin-Laden’s nose … but we’re unable to seal the borders in and out of Iraq. Please!

Of course … the war is not over yet, but it’s looking doubtful that Bush will have the balls to do what it takes to win. If we’re going to win, it’s going to take a hell of a lot more brutality and civilian deaths. It’s also going to take a major war with Iran, and some type of action against Syria.

My personal opinion is that it is impossible to “win the war on terror” without taking out Syria and Iran.

As for Israel … as long as Lebanon, Syria, and Iran are controlled or influenced by Hezbollah, they have not won any war. I’m not really sure if you can find a single Israeli who feels they won the war. In fact, Israelis are pretty much unanimous in wanting Olmert chased out of town.

All it takes is a single bomb for Israel to be but a memory. That threat – in itself – is defeat.

Crosspatch. You’re referring to the wrong war. And even so – if you’ve been paying attention – you might have noticed how many people thought our war was over at one time also. And then the insurgents sorta “showed up.”

You don’t think the jihadists are going to suddenly sign a peace treaty, do you? Funny.

Ethiopia is now at war against radical Islam … forever.

Is this where Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi announces the end to major combat operations?

As opposed to being a reality revisionist?

We won! No really! Forget everything you see! We really did win! There is no terrorist threat. There is no terrorist threat.

Gregor on December 28, 2006 at 12:15 AM

I was under the impression that the article was about Somalia. In that case the Somali Islamic Courts have now disbanded and the various clans are reclaiming their equipment. Didn’t see the twist in the topic to a different war.

In any case, I wonder how many Iranians the Ethiopians captured.

The muslim islamists are confused as there are no ice cream parlors to blow up along with some three and four year olds. Actually fighting mano a mano is not in their playbook.

Yes, the war against Saddam was won. Quite handily, too.

As for the war against terrorism, its still going on. No one has claimed victory. Lets not forget that Bush did war early on that the WT would take several years. I know some of you have conveniently forgotten that, but those of grounded in “reality” and historical context haven’t.

That’s a very good point. I do hope we’re taking advantage of the opportunity to kill as many jihadists as possible. Like I said … winning this war on terror is going to require a lot more brutality and bloodshed.
