I tend to agree with Allahpundit's assesment on this one, In any case, he’s still not a suspect in the poisoning of Litvinenko, and this arrest tells us very little about who killed him or why. It does bolster my...

I think it was more like an Annie Hall moment:
"So this is what $10 million in Polonium looks like! Ah-choo!"

Your best wild speculation, also explains why the price of polonium on the open market was/is irrelevant.

<blockquote><em>"...and Putin’s goons stepped in to stop in a way that would send an unmistakable message to would-be nuclear smugglers.

I mean, why else would you use ten million dollars worth of easily detectable, slow-acting, exotic poison on a single guy, unless you wanted to make headlines?"</em></blockquote>

Which would sort of be a hybrid assination nuclear materials smuggling theory.

I won't commit because of lack of evidence, but your theory makes a lot more sense than this was some super secret plot to kill him and the Russians are so incredibly incompetent they don't know that nuclear material produces different types of radiation which can be tracked.

Balderdash because the Russians have and have always had ever since near the end of WW2 some of the best nuclear scientists in the world.

I've thought almost from the beginning after I had a moment to analyze the more initial sensational stories and find them wanting that we were too quick to be critical of Putin here.

A hard man capable of violence, undoubtedly, but hardly profoundly stupid.

I believe he's a bit vain though and was pissed off to see the British press trashing him so much and the British government not doing anything to stop it after he had ordered this assination to be on the white side of humanity, at least as much as you can be while ordering a killing.

Either that or he was pissed that he had nothing to do with it at all and was being trashed.

Mostly though, I think A.J. Strata is right in so far as there is a ton of reason to believe their was nuclear material smuggling going on.
