Ethiopian warplanes bomb Somalian jihadis

The jihadis seized Mogadishu earlier this year and have been trying to conquer the rest of the country ever since. In one town under their control, you either pray five times a day or get your head cut off. Their Christian neighbor to the west is justifiably alarmed, particularly in light of the support Somali separatists inside Ethiopia are allegedly getting from the new regime.

So today they bombed a recruiting station and supply routes in the northern town of Beledweyne.

You will, it’s safe to say, be seeing more on this subject next year.

Though western diplomats had been urging Ethiopia to use restraint, Ethiopia’s attacks today did not come as a surprise. The question now seems to be if Ethiopia will go into Mogadishu and try to finish off the Islamist military, which many fear could spur a long and ugly insurgency, or simply deal them enough of a blow to force them back to the negotiating table with the transitional government. Ethiopia’s prime minister recently told American officials that he could wipe out the Islamists “in one to two weeks.”

What complicates the issue is the presence of other foreign troops inside Somalia and the rising potential for Somalia’s neighbors to be dragged in. United Nations officials estimate that there are several thousand soldiers from Eritrea, Ethiopia’s arch-enemy, fighting for the Islamists, along with a growing number of Muslim mercenaries from Yemen, Egypt, Syria and Libya who want to turn Somalia into the third front of jihad, after Iraq and Afghanistan. On Friday, residents of Mogadishu said they saw boatloads of armed men landing on the city’s beaches.

The jihadis have already called for Muslims to come join the war.

Here’s a map of the region. Note who Ethiopia’s neighbor to the west is. Oy.

saw this earlier this morning. If we don’t start backing those who are being mowed under by the Militant Muslim movement we’re going to find ourselves short on Allies when we see smoke rising from our own cities, and it won’t be long before it happens.

While we piss and whine about the definition of “Islamophbia” they’re going about trying to figure out the fastest and most destructive way to kill as many of us while cripling our economy as they can.

This is the difference between Pseudo Intellectual theory vs. action. Action will win out.

My heart goes out to the poor poor African people. They have suffered for generations from poverty, subjegation, enslavement and ignorance. God will hear their cries. Bless the missionary folk there they are very courageous, at least the military has weapons. These are the front lines of Spiritual warfare going on in the world at this time. The Sermon on the mount incarnate!

Islam is a religion of peace… just a different kind of peace. The decapitating kind. Stop getting in the way of these poor Muslims’ religious freedoms!

Ethiopia’s prime minister recently told American officials that he could wipe out the Islamists “in one to two weeks.”

PLEASE DO!

Unfortunately, the usual suspects will soon be in front of the cameras condemning Ethiopia for defending themselves. Who gave them the right to live anyway. Lowly Christians!

Gregor on December 24, 2006 at 3:25 PM

God bless Ethiopia.

Not for the escalation of violence because I haven’t been following the situation there and don’t know whether it is a good decision or not.

But bless them in their hour of need against a common enemy and may they defend western civiliation and Christianity as they have done so successfully in the past.

Good.

Though western diplomats had been urging Ethiopia to use restraint

To hell with western diplomats then. I hope the US is supporting the Ethiopians behind the scenes.

What complicates the issue is the presence of other foreign troops inside Somalia…

OK, so pull the foreign troops out and let the Ethiopians take care of business, without being hamstrung by stifling rules of engagement and diplomatic idiots. All western diplomats are doing is sitting back and watching non-Muslims get slaughtered all across Africa. Foreign troops in Somalia are obviously doing nothing as well.

I hope the US is, at least privately, supplying the Ethiopians with all the fuel, weapons and ammo they can use.

I’ll be praying that “western diplomats” don’t stick their noses into this impending conflict, all that will mean is more dead African Christians.

When are people going to admit that we are at war with Islam?

Islam has never had any trouble claiming it’s at war with us.

Gregor on December 24, 2006 at 4:33 PM

Let’s all call for every jihadi to go fight for the Islamists. Ethiopia can wipe them out in a way that America would never be allowed to do.

When all the jihadis have been freed from living, world peace could ensue. What a great Christmas present that would be!

Kevin M on December 24, 2006 at 4:56 PM

Ethiopia has warplanes?

jman on December 24, 2006 at 5:56 PM

I’ve been following the news on this for a while. I’ve been hoping we would be backing Ethiopia since July 20th.

This is just another front on the war on terror. Just like Sudan/Darfur is a front, this is one to.

More Jihadi’s trying to kill non-Muslims.

When is the rest world going to wake up and realize that this really is Global?

Again, get the diplomats out of the way, support in every way what Ethiopia is doing. This has to happen. No one wants it to but it has to happen. There is only way Islamic fascism is going to stop and that is it has to be stopped. They will not stop. Hope is not a strategy and restraint is not a tactic. Go Ethiopia go…………

Ethiopian warplane

Gregor on December 24, 2006 at 6:16 PM

There is a US Military base in the neighboring country of Djibouti (jah-boo-ti). (Just think Beyonce, and you’ll pronounce it right.)

E L Frederick (Sniper One) on December 24, 2006 at 6:23 PM

According to Reuters

Somalia’s ambassador to Ethiopia, Abdikarin Farah, said government forces had killed 500 Islamist troops, most of them Eritreans, in two days of heavy fighting, but there was no independent confirmation of the death toll.

The Islamists, armed with machine-guns and mortars, say they have killed hundreds of pro-government troops, but aid agencies put the total number of dead at dozens.

Sound familiar?

Playing from the same jihadi playbook. Lie, slant, fabricate, and exagerate.

Gregor on December 24, 2006 at 6:41 PM

I thought Clinton took care of things in Somalia.

Jeff on December 24, 2006 at 7:25 PM

Nice going Ethiopia! The whole Somali situation reminds me of the the movie Blackhawk Down …

MoonbatMedia on December 24, 2006 at 7:37 PM

Further evidence that ObL was the worst thing that ever happened to Islamic jihad. If the Muslims make incursions into Ethiopia, Zenawi will be able to respond to the invaders without having to face American bombers and a war crimes trial at the Hague, unlike Milosevic and the Serbs pre-9/11.

Perchant on December 24, 2006 at 7:46 PM

I hope we have some Special Operators on the ground helpin’ out.

Tony737 on December 24, 2006 at 9:05 PM

I hope Ethiopia kicks ass and doesn’t follow the idiotic ROE our soldiers suffer under.

In college I met some people from Ethiopia and I liked them.

G-d Bless and G-d Speed.

It’s good to see someone else defending their interests instead of waiting for the US to do it, and then complaining that we did. God bless you, Ethiopia, may the cowards learn from your example.

Wolfman on December 25, 2006 at 3:42 AM

Three cheers for Ethiopia. They haven’t committed themselves on a large scale, not yet anyway, but they probably will if Eritrea goes all in on the side of the jihadists. According to news reports, Muslim Eritrea has some 2000 troops in Somalia supporting the Islamic government. This thing really has the potential to move to the big time in a hurry.

Oh, and the U.S. is supporting Ethiopia with munitions and training. They’re doing it at a base in Djibouti, and doubtless a lot more behind the scenes that we don’t know about.

If I ruled the country of Ethiopia, I’d go all in right now and try to put a stop to the extremists post haste. And that means prosecuting a real war, not the namby pamby stuff we see in Iraq and Afghanistan. Otherwise, we’ll be hearing about suicide bombings in Addis Ababa any day now…

jaleach on December 25, 2006 at 4:33 AM

Ethiopia’s prime minister recently told American officials that he could wipe out the Islamists “in one to two weeks.”

If they can do it, the US military can do it. I say we take the gloves off and push a total war that makes the Tour of the Pacific 60 years ago look like boy scout march. These people are more dangerous than Japan ever was, they have literally more than 1/4 of the world population and the religious documents to convince that 1/4 that their view of Islam is right.

Tony737 on December 25, 2006 at 7:56 AM

Escalation. “Ethiopian fighter jets bombed Somalia’s main airport Monday …”

Gregor on December 25, 2006 at 11:46 AM

As noted above, the USA has significant military forces in Djibouti, which is next door to Somalia and Ethiopia, and opposite Yemen by Bab al Mandab.

Don’t be surprised if we engage the Somalia jihadists.

georgej on December 25, 2006 at 6:00 PM

Don’t be surprised if we engage the Somalia jihadists.

Don’t be surprised if you never hear about it, and that some of our planes are used in nighttime strikes that the Ethiopians take credit for. We might even make sure a few of their planes are seen going that way.

They’ll be glad to have their neighbors fear their air power, and that way we don’t have to listen to anyone talk about what a quagmire it is already.

The Monster on December 25, 2006 at 9:30 PM

This has been coming for quite a while. When 1,500 Marines suddenly showed up at camp Lemonier a while ago and started intense anti-terror training missions, it didn’t take a crystal ball.

Just reading the CJTF-HOA news bulletins made it pretty clear we had troops showing the flag all over the place in Ethiopia, Kenya, Djibouti, and Eritria.

I’d bet money we’re giving the Ethiopians a lot of logistics and intel support tight now.
