Judge renders $254 million verdict against Iran for Khobar Towers bombing
posted at 2:08 pm on December 22, 2006 by Allahpundit
Thereby all but confirming that the bombing was carried out, as has long been suspected, by the Saudi chapter of the left’s favorite freedom fighters: Hezbollah.
Though Lamberth has previously ruled that a survivor of the blast could seek payment from Iran, Friday’s ruling was the first time Tehran has been blamed for the deaths of the Americans in the bombing.
“The defendants also provided money, training and travel documents to Saudi Hezbollah members in order to facilitate the attacks,” Lamberth wrote. “Moreover, the sheer gravity and nature of the attack demonstrate the defendants’ unlawful intent to inflict severe emotional distress upon the American servicemen as well as their close relatives.”…
Two Iranian government security agencies and senior members of the Iranian government itself provided funding, training and logistical help to terrorists who carried out the attack on a dormitory that housed U.S. Air Force pilots and staff in Saudi Arabia, [former FBI Director Louis] Freeh testified.
Nineteen dead American airmen. Fourteen suspects, all but one of them Saudi, not a single one of whom has been extradited to the United States to stand trial. The victims’ families will have to sue in foreign courts to recover the award; they’re unlikely to get much.
The attack occurred on June 25, 1996, incidentally. Who was the president of Iran at the time? The same man for whom Argentina recently issued an arrest warrant in connection with the bombing of the Buenos Aires Jewish Center in 1994. Who happens to have been the leading vote-getter in last week’s election for Iran’s Assembly of Experts and, thus, the leading candidate to replace Khamenei as the country’s supreme leader — that famous moderate, Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani.
Update: Andy McCarthy says Clinton knew and didn’t do jack.
Yet, in the civil litigation brought by bombing victims against Iran, the State Department has actually intervened on Iran’s behalf, filing an amicus brief in support of the Islamic Republic’s position.
In point of fact, the Iranian role has been known to our government since the 1990s. The Clinton administration suppressed it because, right after the Khobar bombing, President Clinton threatened to retaliate with a military attack against any nation found to be complicit. Acknowledging proof of an Iranian role would have required doing something about it.
By autumn 1999, evidence had emerged that was reliable enough for State Department spokesman James Rubin to state publicly: “We do have specific information with respect to the involvement of Iranian government officials.” Yet, Clinton contented himself with firing off … a letter, pleading with the mullahs — who, mind you had already spurned a similar request — for help bringing those responsible to justice.

“Saudi chapter of… Hezbollah”
Wait a sec, I thought Hezbollah was a Shiite organization. Am I just as clueless as Congressman Reyes?

The point is not to sue the bastards. It’s to do something about it. Asking Iran for help in bringing these guys to justice is laughable. This was an act of war, not a crime.

Hmmmmm….good luck on collecting.

Hmmm, 245 Million Dollars…
Not quite justice, but I’d rather see that money in the hands of the survivors and their next-of-kin than in the hands of … Ahmadinejad (pauses to look up spelling again)
So how exactly do the plaintiffs go about getting the money from the Iranians?
Jones Zemkophill on December 22, 2006 at 2:19 PM
Yeah, I’m sure the mullahs are crapping kittens right now and are ready to start writing checks.
flipflop on December 22, 2006 at 2:21 PM
It is. There’s a Shiite minority in Saudi Arabia, though — one which could threaten the country’s oil fields if things come to a head with Iran. You’re also assuming that Sunni jihadis wouldn’t work with Shiites to fight a common enemy. Don’t be so sure — Iran has long been rumored to harbor members of Al Qaeda.
Allahpundit on December 22, 2006 at 2:21 PM
So why doesnt that surprise me?
maintenanceman on December 22, 2006 at 2:21 PM
Yup…those mullahs are quaking in their sandals and will start writing checks any minute now.

As well as Bin Laden hiding his relatives in Iran. They dont trust each other but Sunni and Shiia extremists will back each other against the great satan.
Which also maybe why Zawahiri is so big on basing Israel lately. Al Queda hasnt been big on worrying about Israel other than I believe to get Shiia approval.

I make no such assumption. However, they are just as liable to kill each other as to kill us. It makes me wonder if there are any Wahhabi organizations in Iran with ties to Saudi Arabia. Could this be a new type of warfare? With terrorists used like privateers in proxy wars?

OJ will pay the Goldmans before these barbarians give up a dime of our oil money.

It is a shame that we continue to lose more good men and women to Islamic-based terrorism every day without exacting a larger toll on those who seek our destruction.
It is not about money or remuneration for damages , it is about crushing our enemy so that their will to continue their ways is broken, once and for all.
I personally do not believe we have the leadership or the will to do what needs to be done, there are any number of reasons for me saying it as I look at the political leadership and how it ebbs and flows over the shoals of time and tides.
Those seeking a new Great Caliphate will continue to attack the Great Satan and the West, count on it, but don’t expect to be compensated for it when it touches you personally, which it eventually will, again and again.
Be prepared to exact that compensation personally, as our enemies have had years to build up their forces here on our shores and will continue to do so.

John Fn Kerry can pickup the check while he’s visiting Tehran.
Oh, wait, that would take balls.
Nevermind.

Let invite Blablaimajihad (sic) for a UN visit – we can get Bo Dietel to serve him papers.

If they don’t pay up, the court will impose a judgment lien. Then it’s just a matter of some sheriff’s deputies seizing property. Don’t know whether they’ll start with all that peaceful nuclear hardware or the midget’s Members Only jacket.
Maybe we can gain custody of Hezbollah in the bargain.

Trading votes for lives, can’t go after them would upset the Dems base. Besides it was only 19 dead. They would gain 19 votes, but lose thousands from their liberal friends, just doesn’t make political sense.
You gotta love those Democrats, there is no bottom to their miserable ways.
right2bright on December 22, 2006 at 6:17 PM
Actually that is not true. Clinton caved to the Saudi’s.
Prior to the attack the parking lot; where they parked the truck; had been identified as being to close to the buildings and it was requested to the Saudi’s that the perimeter be extended in case of such an attack.
The Saudi government said no, and that was that.
I arrived at Khobar on the 26th of June to relive the F-15s/ crews from Eglin. If things had worked out as planned originally, my squadron would have been asleep in building 131.
F15Mech on December 22, 2006 at 7:27 PM
Thank God you weren’t there EagleMechanic!
My (then) brother-in-law was, but thankfully he was on the other side of another building, facing away from the blast. Klinton did nothing about it and that just emboldens our enemy to hit us again … and again.
Now that it’s offically Iran’s dirty deed, I say let the missiles fly! What did Reagan do when we found out that the Libyans hit us? He sent the Air Force to go kick some Libyan ass!

Million? Million!?!!? What, did Dr. Evil set the judgement?

MirCat on December 22, 2006 at 10:07 PM
Glad your brother-in-law made it thru. From talking to the members of my squadrons ADVON team (they where still in the Khobar hotel building) it was nuts that night.
When I arrived my squadron was put up in the British and French side of Khobar since many buildings on the US side (not just #131) were damaged and more then building #131 was condemned.

But I can not accept this award until EVERY Poster gets one too, because there are no winners or losers blah blah blah (insert corny hollywood talk here).
Thanks EagleFixer! :-)

I propose we deliver the invoice for the amount due taped to the nose of a JDAM aimed at Amanajahandjob’s bedroom window.
Iran OWES us for the US Embassy and the 444 days of captivity. AND they owe us for Khobar Towers. Big time.
georgej on December 23, 2006 at 7:55 AM
And the Marine Barracks and the US Embassy in Lebanon. Let’s not forget them.
georgej on December 23, 2006 at 8:33 AM
I am thinking there should be frozen Iranian assets here in the US, leftovers from the 1970′s. These could be used to pay the judgement could they not?
jones on December 23, 2006 at 11:03 AM
I believe there have been Iranian assets in this country that have been frozen for some time.
Supposedly, not allowing collection from those assets, allows some pointy-headed liberal enabler foreign policy expert to use it as a “stick”.
Uh….yeah….it’s worked real well hasn’t it?
That bastard tried to hang the site commander as not doing enough for security.
I stayed a couple buildings away from the one blown when transitting during the first Gulf War. You could cross the street and catch a taxi downtown. The buildings were solidly constructed, and anyone should have known immediately it wasn’t a ragtag bunch that blew it up. It took a bomb of the type that would suggest state sponsorship.
Bubba was busy hoping Monica wouldn’t bite, and NEVER ONCE gave a damn about any poor schmuck blown up half way around the world.

Damn shame that our leaders and collectively, the people, never seem to learn from our history, merely eternally doomed to repeat it. it seems.
You are 150% right – we need to do the right thing – period!
In WW II, Pearl Harbor was enough to mobilize the people.
in 2007, I am not sure what it takes – as 9/11 was appearently not enough.
