One cannot “falsify history”. History will forever remain the same, no matter what anyone says. Irving was never an official spokesman of history, and his books were not taught as curriculum in schools and universities. So how can writing a book, which is his opinion, be worthy of prison. I’m sorry but this idea is ridiculous and worthy of scorn.

Oh, and not the whole Democratic Party should be tossed. There are lots of Sane Centrists like Orson Scott Card. He’s a Democrat I greatly respect.

Check out his just released new book “Empire”. Started reading it last night and it’s a very interesting premise, and, so far, a great read. First in a series of 3 books, and there’s a video game being developed in tandem with the books that looks awesome enough that I’m seriously thinking about getting it when it’s released. And I’m not a gamer.

I’d mention the premise of the story, except I got a ban warning a while back for positing an un-hoped-for and dis-advocated rumination that the possibility of a similar scenario might even exist.

David Irving certainly is a creep with some appalling viewpoints. Yet we should ask ourselves why someone gets imprisoned in the “free” West, for voicing an opinion. We have no right to criticise others on freedom of expression (or the lack of), when we ourselves imprison people for speech transgressions. It cuts both ways. However disturbing his views, Irving should be able to voice them without having to fear arrest. And so we should be able to proclaim our disgust at the Islamic faith, religious intolerance, etc etc. If we entertain hypocrisy, how will we teach others about freedom? Granted, the USA is rather free in that regard. But some European countries are positively Stalinist in their laws, like for example Austria and Germany. It needs to change.

A correction: Lukacs never “testified” against Irving. He wrote a scathing review of one of Irving’s books, and Irving in turn threatened to sue Lukacs. Lukacs is only one of many brilliant historians who saw the absurdity of Irving’s views. If you google Lukacs and Irving you will find all sorts of wicked defenses of Irving and obscene remarks about Lukacs.

Irving is a nut and does a lot of damage to the historical record. There are good reasons why giant historians like John Lukacs testified against him. However, Europe is imbecilic and anemic and a hand-wringing nanny state. Indeed, how does one explain a mass of intellectuals who on one hand get all upset and fearful over a David Irving, and on the other hand kiss the asses of totalitarian ideologues (read Islamists) who are every bit as bent upon ridding the world of Jews as Hitler was? If the same laws would be applied here, at least 10% of the lefties and some of our ‘esteeemed’ leaders would be in prison, or threatened with it.

Irving is nuts and so are George Galloway and David Duke, and many others.

These stringent European laws restrict not only freedom of speech; they also hinder open and on-going discussions and drive these types into the underground, into prison and embolden them.

They should be shunned for their views. However, as is, some of the old in Europe believe what Irving does, the middle-aged don’t talk about it and the youth haven’t the slightest interest in the topic.
