[...] Update: If you missed the flame war I linked in the headlines between Rick Moran and Ace, now’s your chance. Moran’s argument is reminiscent of (but distinct from) the nonsense Boehlert floated last year during Jamilgate and which Yglesias dusted off a week or two ago for this story — namely, that because worse things have happened in Iraq, it doesn’t really matter whether Beauchamp’s telling the truth. The parallel’s close enough that it’s worth quoting what I wrote in December: [Boehlert] doesn’t care if the story’s bogus or not. He’ll say en passant that he does because he knows, as a journalist and media critic, that he has to. But it’s strictly pro forma. His position seems to be that the story’s true in the Larger Sense, as a microcosm of the brutality in Iraq, even if it’s not, you know, technically true (”as if an AP retraction would change a thing on the ground in Baghdad, where electricity remains scarce, but sectarian death squads roam freely”). In other words, “fake but accurate.” That’s his bottom line here and that’s why it’s dishonest of him and his pals to even pretend to care whether the report’s accurate. As far as they’re concerned, if Jamil Hussein turns out to be real, the story’s true; if he turns out not to be real, the story’s True. They can’t go wrong. Meanwhile the AP, if it’s guilty of bad facts to whatever greater or lesser degree, gets an almost completely free pass. [...]

[...] Allah explains (more here) why any apology to the Left — over Jamilgate specifically, which is still far from resolved, but you could apply it to plenty else — is futile, and worse than a waste of time: I explicitly acknowledged that we were wrong about Hussein and apologized to our readers for having led them on a not-so-wild wild-goose chase. Does Media Matters link to that post? Of course not, because that wouldn’t fit their narrative. Instead they link to a post of mine from December answering Eric Boehlert’s columns about Jamilgate. They’re hoping their readers won’t actually follow the links but will instead simply deduce from the headlines they’ve provided that we responded to the new revelation about Hussein by picking on Eric Boehlert to change the subject. It’s a naked lie. [...]

[...] Except I didn’t. Media Matters’s item about Hot Air links to a post I wrote in December answering Boehlert’s columns on Jamilgate. Why would MM mislead their readers by linking to an old piece that doesn’t address the most recent news instead of to a newer post that does? Because if you read that newer post, you’ll find this: She [i.e., Michelle] and we were wrong about Jamil Hussein. Whether we’re wrong about the rest of it, too, we’ll see. Apologies, though, to the HA readers for having led you on a bit of a wild goose chase, however well founded and well intended our suspicions were. [...]

<blockquote>When is the television mainstream media going to use the AP as a sacrificial lamb to shore up its own credibility? CNN could cash in bigtime. They might get a few Nielsen numbers back from Fox.

Your assumption is that CNN does not do the same thing. Won't happen, CNN was in bed with the enemy in the first Gulf War...to many skeltons in the closet. Pointing the finger at AP, as the saying goes, creates three pointing back at them. The MSM protects their own. Step out of line, and your job is gone.

<blockquote>"the doomed U.S. invasion"</blockquote>
THIS is what pisses me off the most. Its their preconceived notion that Iraq was a failure even before it began. This is what they were saying BEFORE day one. Hell, they were saying Afganistan would be a failure on September 12th! Nothing matters, not truth, not integrity, NOTHING, just as long as it fits into their mindset that says not that we are losing in Iraq, but that it is IMPOSSIBLE to win.

I've always been of the mind that if something is bad, the truth about it should stand on its own. If there are some who don't share your alarm or ask why the glass is always half empty for you, the answer is not to just make up more stuff to bolster your view.

It absolutely slays me how when some question the constant negativity of reporting, and interject with positive news to balance things at least to some degree, there are always the Boehlerts who will shout more negativity and accuse you of "ignoring the facts on the ground" while they conveniently ignore certain facts. Boehlert was careful not to link See Dubya as he partially quoted him, which is simply another act of deliberate twisting to support a half truth proving he's no better than those he defends.

The mere fact that their (AP, Reuters, etc.) stories come out only hours, sometimes minutes, after they happen leads me to believe that their "exhaustive verification" process isn't as exhaustive, lengthy or fool-proof as they say it is.

AP's promised response, which they claimed would come out "soon" when the burning six story first came into question, which was supposed to have more facts and more detail and which took almost a week, had neither more fact, nor more detail; unless you want to count the "we checked hospitals and morgues" part that was edited out later. It was simply followed with a glorified and indignant, "We stick to our story."

I've got your Captain Hussein. His name is Barrack Hussein Obama and I think Debbie is right---he is the Manchurian candidate. I know this is off topic, but she is right. You watch and see.

Now, I'm no friend of the A(w/t)P...but I have yet to see any real evidence that they were intentionally "untruthful" about this story. One minute, they are...then wait!, they might not be...then wait! maybe they are, etc...

I do look forward to closure on this whole sordid affair, but this one seems to me to be destined to leave us hanging...

They've (Boehlert & the AP) been deceitful so long, had carte blanche so long, they either have twisted their own brains into believing their own lies, or they just don't care.
They do know with enough garbage print and misdirection as above that they have always gotten away with it, and the largest print news services are in bed with them.

I really don't know how they sleep at night.

<blockquote>I think that the <strong>rathergate</strong> stuff pretty much proves that these media types have a standard of proof that is unreachable.

Speaking of RatherGate, I think Eric Bonehead is going with "fake but true" on the AP story.
