[...] I speculated about a mix up due to the conventions of Arabic names back on November 30th, mainly because Khalaf himself had initially been included on Centcom’s list of suspect sources. But that got eaten up by the other (still outstanding) questions: How is it that Hussein was able to comment on attacks all over Baghdad, including some far away from his precinct? How come the AP dropped the detail about four mosques being burned when it was challenged after their first report? Why couldn’t Bob Owens find corroborating stories from other media outlets on so many incidents sourced to Hussein? And why weren’t Armed Liberal’s sources, Eason Jordan’s sources, and Michelle’s sources collectively able to find this guy? I said last week in writing about Zombie’s response to HRW re: the Israeli ambulance attack that “I’ve reached the point where, when one of these blogstorms kicks up, I half-hope the media will produce the smoking gun that proves them right, just so we can have a little faith that they’re covering sensational incidents with due diligence.” Well, here’s the smoking gun. And while I have more faith now in the AP, I have less faith in the certainty of any information I get from Iraq. It took six weeks, with multiple people checking, to confirm the mere existence of a guy whose name, rank, and location were publicly known — and the issue would still be in doubt if Khalaf hadn’t come clean.
[...] The “Jamil Hussein” story is one important item on our agenda, but not the only one. As Curt and other bloggers on this story have noted from the beginning, Jamilgate isn’t just about “Jamil Hussein.” Bryan and I plan to do as much on-the-ground reporting as we can to nail down unresolved questions–not only about Jamil Hussein and the Hurriya six burning Sunnis allegations, but also about the AP four burning mosque story discrepancies and the many other AP sources that our military has publicly challenged–including “Lt. Maitham Abdul Razzaq” and more than a dozen police officers listed by U.S. military spokesman Navy Lt. Michael Dean. There’s also the issue of detained AP photographer Bilal Hussein. And we are looking forward to reporting first-hand on the security situation in Iraq outside the so-called “Green Zone” (International Zone) and talking to as many American and Iraqi Army troops with insights on these and other broader matters.
[...] The “single story” canard is a neat example of Boehlert’s disingenuousness. He’s written two columns about Jamilgate now; there are enough links embedded in both to show he’s done his homework. Which means he knows very well this wasn’t the only story the AP’s used Jamil Hussein for. The actual number, as Michelle notes, exceeds 60. He also knows that the AP originally claimed four mosques were burned and that that claim has since disappeared into the ether without so much as a clarification. Just like he also knows, courtesy of Robert Bateman, that it’s unlikely in the extreme based on Hussein’s location that he’d be a credible witness for the wide variety of attacks sourced to him by the AP. All of which make this story highly dubious, yet none of which Boehlert sees fit to mention anywhere in his piece. Why? [...]

Ragnar made a similar point today at the Jawa Report, wondering why the left would rush to the defense of a corporation that might be guilty of making an already horrendous situation in Iraq look even worse than it is.

Why would the left rush to the defense of a corporation that might be guilty of making an already horrendous situation in Iraq look even worse than it is? Easy. They want our side to lose. They want America to lose face in front of the entire world. Any other easy questions?

[...] The workers’ testimony only bolsters the AP’s case. Why would Daniszewski have omitted it? If it’s because he no longer felt confident they were telling the truth, why wasn’t a clarification issued? But then, this does seem to be the AP’s M.O. when a fact goes bad on them, like with the four supposedly burned mosques — they don’t retract it, they simply stop mentioning it and hope that people forget about it. Just ask Robert Bateman. [...]

As many times as AP has called for the resignations and firings of Republicans who've screwed the pooch (so to speak), doesn't it seem only right for them to can a lying or overly-gullible reporter?

Don't you think, that in the spirit of transparency, they should put together a blue-ribbon panel that will advise them on what went wrong and how to prevent the same lapses in the future? Maybe Lee Hamilton is available.

Unless our own government gets the nads to take on this issue on,they have gotten away and will continue to get away with it.We have leakers of national secrets right here that walk away scott-free,and AP makes more cash from writing propoganda for the Arab states to no longer care if we catch them or not.Keep pounding away but I am to the point where I do not think they really care that much.

[...] UPDATE: If you’re looking for analysis now — and frankly, better analysis than I’ll likely be able to give — go to Allah at Hot Air. Allah tells you what’s important about Marc’s post in the light of what we already knew. This is the sort of thing Allah does better than anyone. [...]

Allah, I don't think that calling for retractions and resignations is uncalled for at this point. The AP has charged the Iraqi Army and Iraqi Police with turning a blind eye to sectarian-based terror attacks, and has utterly failed to support that claim. They have claimed that four mosques were destroyed, and two dozen killed, all based upon the word of a primary source they cannot verify as legitimate after three weeks on this story, and two previous years of association.

They have essentially called the U.S military and our Iraqi allies liars, and haven't been much kinder to us for asking them to provide evidence of their claims.

They have had three weeks to come up with physical evidence to support their charges and their sources, and they have utter failed across the board. I'd argue that resignations and retractions are due, if not overdue, at this point.
