Reading the articles in the Indian media gives me the impression that Santhi Soudarajan may not be a surgical transexual but instead has androgen insensitivity syndrome or a related disorder. Androgens are literally what make generic fetuses into fully functioning males. Without androgens, or in the cases where the developing fetus’ body is insensitive to them, the fetus continues to develop as a female, though it is genetically male. The external genitalia looks female. The problem is not recognized until puberty, but there are undeveloped testes in their bodies, not ovaries.
