At the top of Drudge right now. A fine choice, if perhaps a bit obvious.

My condolences to Than Shwe, who ran a terrific campaign.

Update: Salon named its own person of the year last night. You won’t believe it.

Update: Here’s the cover story at Time.

Update: Amazing.

Allah, I’m happy to announce, that I was also chosen one of this year’s “Time Persons of the Year”. Welcome to the club.

amerpundit on December 16, 2006 at 8:57 PM

In reference to Salon: losers picking the whiner.

Zorro on December 16, 2006 at 8:58 PM

I’m somebody now. Things are gonna start happening to me.

Buck Turgidson on December 16, 2006 at 9:07 PM

Something you’ll never see, a soldier as the Salon person of the year. All the military does is protect a whole nation, and world for that matter. All a soldier does is take down the enemy, the real enemy. Salon’s choice? He takes someone down worse than the enemy, the real enemy. He takes down a conservative. A conservative that may even have a chance to win the White House. Now that’s courage……………

ritethinker on December 16, 2006 at 9:09 PM

I’m putting this on my resume.

Mazztek on December 16, 2006 at 9:17 PM

In yo face Barack!

RightWinged on December 16, 2006 at 9:40 PM

I was chosen as TIME’s person of the year, but I decided to give it to Donald Rumsfeld.

Nonfactor on December 16, 2006 at 9:40 PM

What a gutless, ass-licking choice. Does anyone really think if the elections had turned out differently that TIME would still be so pleased with “us”?

WasatchMan on December 16, 2006 at 9:41 PM

I’m SPECIAL!

Defector01 on December 16, 2006 at 9:45 PM

WasatchMan on December 16, 2006 at 9:41 PM

You’re a winner too! No need to be bitter.

Nonfactor on December 16, 2006 at 9:50 PM

I just started my blog last month and I’m getting awards already?

Do I get an oversized novelty check?

JammieWearingFool on December 16, 2006 at 10:00 PM

How lame can Time get? Every time I think that they’ve sunk to a new low, they keep digging. They predicted this over at the PowerLine blog (although they thought it would be the American Voter).

rmgraha on December 16, 2006 at 10:07 PM

“Salon named its own person of the year last night. You won’t believe it.”

Never would have guessed it, but I definitely believe it.

Greg Tinti on December 16, 2006 at 10:27 PM

You like me! You really LIKE me!

The Monster on December 16, 2006 at 10:43 PM

Congratulations everyone!

infidel on December 16, 2006 at 11:03 PM

I believe Salon’s choice; I don’t like it, but I believe it.

And to think, I went to not only college, but high school with that tool. Ugh.

CR UVa on December 16, 2006 at 11:08 PM

Never on Saloonie, but I believe Time had as the Persons of the Year “The American Soldier” a few years back. Hard to believe I know, but’s give credit where credit is due.

Credit – Time.

There, I did it. Now let’s get back to pointing out what a commie piece of (glossy) toilet paper it is.

Tony737 on December 16, 2006 at 11:40 PM

Typo above – but let’s give. Sorry ’bout that, but I’m holding my 3 week old daughter as I type this :-)

Tony737 on December 16, 2006 at 11:42 PM

Considering the source, I decline the nomination.

rmgraha on December 16, 2006 at 11:42 PM

It’s like “hurray I won the $100 million lotto!”, only to find out I’m sharing it with 300 million other winners.

Danilo on December 16, 2006 at 11:45 PM

Why does this not surprise me? I read this over at Drudge and all I could think of is, “Wow! Now that’s post-modernism at it’s finest!” It’s all about me! Me, me, me. Now we can all put a stupid little award gif on our webpage congratulating ourselves on our mutual mediocrity. After all, that’s what the “modern” world wants – no one that stands out, that’s above average.

I agree. This was a weak pointless pick and amounts to nothing. But then again, I stopped paying attention to Time’s “Person of the Year” many years ago. The only good one they had was the “Person of the Century” – The U.S. Soldier.

armyvet on December 16, 2006 at 11:47 PM

If you can call being ranked with Saddam and Hitler as being a “winner”.

Danilo on December 16, 2006 at 11:59 PM

Interesting how all four runners-up (Ahmadinejad, Hu Jintao, Kim Jong-il and Nancy Pelosi) are all trying to destroy America. I guess that alone is guaranteed to make you a “Person of the Year” finalist these days.

World B. Free on December 17, 2006 at 12:02 AM

MACACA!!! To the second power!

robblefarian on December 17, 2006 at 12:06 AM

But I desecrated a Koran! Oh, well…

SouthernGent on December 17, 2006 at 12:23 AM

What a cop-out. “We” have always been the driving force of information…which is simply a product. It’s all supply-side economics.

But *pat’s self on back* anyway!

Where’s my picture on the cover?

JetBoy on December 17, 2006 at 1:23 AM

This reminds me of the T-ball leagues where every game is a “tie” in order to “build self-esteem”. Could Time get any lazier and intellectually bankrupt? Only if they changed their name to Salon–nothing like giving a nonentity a non-award.

ReubenJCogburn on December 17, 2006 at 1:37 AM

The article is written so poorly – I wanted to weep. They could have looked beyond YouTube for stupid, offensive and misspelled comments too.

The essence of their nomination, before any of us get carried away with ‘pride’, is this:

This is an opportunity to build a new kind of international understanding, not politician to politician, great man to great man, but citizen to citizen, person to person.

Translation:

This is an opportunity to build a new kind of global kumbaya, not Messrs Blair to Bush, Ahmadinejad to Chavez, but world-citizen to world-citizen, rabble to rabble.

Not transparent enough? Further translation:

We hate colloquial America and yearn for a one-world socialist kumbaya.

Tony737 on December 16, 2006 at 11:42 PM

Tony737, how is the little 737 girl?

Yes, they made the American soldier person of the year, after they offered it to Mr. Rumsfeld, he declined and suggested that they instead award the soldiers.

Entelechy on December 17, 2006 at 2:47 AM

So Time finally jumps the shark. It’s about time they made obvious what many of us have known for some time: This is not a news magazine.

Pablo on December 17, 2006 at 8:26 AM

Like I care what TIME magazine thinks …. about any topic.

fogw on December 17, 2006 at 8:26 AM

This is what happens in a newsroom when the Democrats gain narrow majorities in both houses of Congress.

An absolute waste of TIME.

I’m glad I cancelled my subscription….

More than twenty years ago.

Shameless pandering.

doingwhatican on December 17, 2006 at 9:04 AM

but remember … the MSM is well balanced. gag.

One Angry Christian on December 17, 2006 at 9:16 AM

I’m not the person of the year.

I clicked on the link to Time and watched all the different people flash by. None of them were at all over-weight, so I’m feeling left out. And uh, discriminated against! Yeh.

I’ll sue…after I have some more chocolate…

MamaAJ on December 17, 2006 at 11:12 AM

I thought Time’s criteria for Person of the Year was the person who was in the news the most–literally the most stories, etc. If that’s the case, then I’d bet it was George W. Bush again, and they just couldn’t bring themselves to put him on the cover again (even if most of the stories about him this year were negative ones).

aero on December 17, 2006 at 11:36 AM

AGAIN? I need a bigger mantel.

shooter on December 17, 2006 at 11:49 AM

Thanks TIME, I’m honored…really.

For anyone who ever needed proof as to exactly how irrelevant TIME Magazine is, I submit Exhibit A for your consideration.

SpartRan on December 17, 2006 at 2:44 PM

Well, “You” weren’t the only candidate.

GPE on December 17, 2006 at 2:51 PM

It’s hilarious when you check out time’s website and you see that they can’t even get a photo of someone in the military correct.

SpartRan on December 17, 2006 at 2:44 PM

Thank you SpartRan. This is a favorite of mine and I’ve used it often, to the consternation of some…

Entelechy on December 17, 2006 at 9:41 PM

I didn’t mean to link the whole freakin’ post. Hope that doesn’t bone the thread up.

Nethicus on December 18, 2006 at 1:20 AM

Well I feel special; and not in the good fun Las Vegas way either.

Cary on December 18, 2006 at 8:39 AM

Nethicus on December 18, 2006 at 1:10 AM

Stating the obvious, but sheeple are easier to manipulate. Fortunately the one-world socialist kumbaya will remain a utopian dream, so long as we are around.

However, there are always more Pauls than Peters, and therin lies the danger.

Entelechy on December 18, 2006 at 3:38 PM

Where’s my picture on the cover?

JetBoy on December 17, 2006 at 1:23 AM

Funny you should ask. On the actual magazine cover, the video screen is reflective, so that you can see yourself while reading that it’s YOU.

Sometimes everything means nothing. Sometimes everybody means nobody. As in “everybody is special”, which dilutes special to the point of nobody being special. But of course Time has to say something, even when it has nothing to say.
