Video: “Shrek the Third” trailer
posted at 5:01 pm on December 15, 2006 by Allahpundit
Didn’t see the second one, couldn’t stand the first one for no better reason, really, than Mike Myers recycling his Scottish accent yet again. This is at least the fourth character he’s used it for, first with the “All Things Scottish” salesman on SNL back in the day (“if it’s not Scottish, it’s crap”), then the father in “So I Married An Axe Murderer,” then of course Fat Bastard. If the Wayne’s World series hadn’t been euthanized after the first sequel, they’d eventually have sent Wayne and Garth to be exchange students in Glasgow where they meet their Scottish cable-access slacker counterparts. Angus’s World, Angus’s World, it’s party time, it’s excellent…
Do any of the adults here actually like this crap?

Cartoons and comic book heros — doesn’t anyone grow up anymore?
EF on December 15, 2006 at 5:08 PM
No I do not enjoy the Shrek series at all. It’s the music, where there is no originality. I miss the Bugs Bunny musician, Carl Stalling. And the great music in those cartoons.
CrimsonFisted on December 15, 2006 at 5:11 PM
Allah, The answer is “No”, but the kids eat it up.
CliffHanger on December 15, 2006 at 5:13 PM
I love Shrek, its very funny and I like to go to those movies where i don’t think I just laugh. Man does not need to keep his brain humming 24/7
Defector01 on December 15, 2006 at 5:17 PM
I thought the first one was clever in parts, the second not so good. The third? “Milkin’ it” seems appropriate.
Slublog on December 15, 2006 at 5:19 PM
Ahhh come on guys… lighten up….
Yes, there are some adults who DO actually like these movies… you just have to take them for what they are…
Dam… you all are sounding like you want a great philosophical introspective Zorro movie…
Sometimes, its nice… for a movie to just be basic mindless entertainment…
Romeo13 on December 15, 2006 at 5:21 PM
I love these movies!!! The first two were very funny and well made IMO. Hopefullythe 3rd movie lives up to the otehr two!
NTW, I’m 29 and yes, I LOVE CARTOONS!!!!
(Mostly Adult Swim from Cartoon Network but still cartoon!!!)
Yakko77 on December 15, 2006 at 5:28 PM
I imagine that’s the same reason libs watch Olbermann.
Ian on December 15, 2006 at 5:28 PM
Don’t like ‘em either. Only saw the first and it was mildly funny but the theme seemed to be ‘it’s OK to fall in love with the fat ugly chick’ and just rubbed me wrong.
Call me weird, but I don’t think telling our young folk it’s OK and even beautiful to be overweight, not this generation anyway.
shooter on December 15, 2006 at 5:33 PM
I love cartoons as well. Shrek the first one was decent. I rather enjoyed it, but the second one sucked. This one will probably suck worse.
Please don’t subject us to anymore posts about this movie.
PUHHHHHLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZZ!?!?!
For the love of allah … think of the children.
One Angry Christian on December 15, 2006 at 5:33 PM
Lighten up, Frances! If it’s a movie I can watch with the kids, it’s a good movie.
jdpaz on December 15, 2006 at 5:38 PM
THESE are cartoons!
CrimsonFisted on December 15, 2006 at 5:41 PM
jdpaz; i think its a unique kids movie in that it has jokes for the kids and also jokes for the adults, which is why this is a very popular movie for the whole family
Defector01 on December 15, 2006 at 5:41 PM
I’m an adult in biological terms and I like it! Granted it’s probably a rental but it’s pretty funny.
Dash on December 15, 2006 at 5:45 PM
ABSOLUTELY! beep beep…
shooter on December 15, 2006 at 5:45 PM
Shrek is terrible. Most of the “jokes” are pop culture references that are somehow supposed to be funny just because we recognize the reference. Also it’s really crass.
Alex K on December 15, 2006 at 5:46 PM
The first one was good. Yeah it was a kids film but it had some jokes that went over kids heads so that parents wouldn’t be bored in the cinema (not that I have kids). Sort of a cynical piss-take of sentimental Disney movies and the animation was good. The second seemed unecessary and I couldn’t sit through a third (although my girlfriend might insist).
aengus on December 15, 2006 at 5:46 PM
Also–do children read Hot Air? Good lord.
Alex K on December 15, 2006 at 5:47 PM
Seriously AllahP- Could you BE any more curmudgeony?
BelchSpeak on December 15, 2006 at 5:53 PM
Yes I love the Shrek movies. Myers does the accent so much because his father was Scottish and had that accent. It’s a tribute I think because his father passed away.
Benaiah on December 15, 2006 at 6:05 PM
Actually, I’m getting tired of these kinds of movies. Why can’t these guys make a kids movie without tossing in countless of jokes aimed at adults? As a Dad I accept the fact that I will have to sit through children’s movies, I don’t need the writers to try and throw me a bone.
The only reason I say this, I think that some of these new “cartoons” are starting to cross the line with the adult humor. Cars comes to mind, way too many sophomoric, thinly veiled sexual references for my liking. Maybe I’m just an old fuddy-duddy, I won’t allow my daughter to have any Bratz toys either.
What was I talking about again….
reaganaut on December 15, 2006 at 6:14 PM
Yeah, Defector01, I kinda like the humor that hits on both levels, too—as long as it’s not smut. Pixar does a nice job of it. I didn’t catch any sexual references in Cars, reaganaut. Guess I’ll have to watch it again.
jdpaz on December 15, 2006 at 6:21 PM
No, we should all read blogs, watch Fox News 24/7 and curse the downfall of western civ as Islamofascists creep closer and closer to attaining worldwide jihad. And we should be adults all the time. Sheesh.
I’ve been to Walt Disney World 15 times over the past eight years. Just me and my wife. Taking her there for Christmas this coming Wednesday. An eleven hour drive to the Happiest place on Earth.
Different strokes for different folks.
robblefarian on December 15, 2006 at 6:22 PM
I always thought that they really lowered the bar with Shrek as far as what’s acceptible in a movie that is marketed to children. Dreamworks always seems to fill their kids’ offerings with wacky things. Antz, for example, had Woody Allen trying to unite the workers so they could control the means of production (not to mention a “battlefield” scene with thousands of dismembered ants) and some profanity, then you get Shrek with its over-reliance on fart-jokes, exploding frogs, WWF wrestling, and jabs at disney. Then there’s the “I don’t give a damn about a bad reputation” in the soundtrack. I never even saw the second one I was so irritated at the first. There are moments in some disney flicks that are bad, but Shrek always felt like a constant barrage of crap aimed at kids.
On a totally adult level, I can see how some think it’s south park meets princess bride or something, but Dreamworks did all the fast-food tie-ins, and marketed to kids, which is why Shrek annoys me.
Spassvogel on December 15, 2006 at 6:24 PM
I liked the first Shrek movie, but AllahPundit making fun of it is curmudgeony goodness.
sandberg on December 15, 2006 at 6:27 PM
Huh. I just got Cars from Netflix. I think Pixar makes the best animated movies right now. Finding Nemo is a classic – a good movie regardless of age.
Slublog on December 15, 2006 at 6:29 PM
You guys are awesome! Merry Christmas and have a wonderful time on your trip:)
wytammic on December 15, 2006 at 6:34 PM
by and large these are good kids movies and its good to see wiht pixar as well as with disney and these G/PG movies there is no sex or gratuitous violence and this is one of the few places where inappropriate crap isn’t infringing on it. I mean its hard enough being a parent in this day and age and at least there are some things where you can take your kids and you don’t have a heart attack.
but then again i’m 23 and have no kids so what do I know?
Defector01 on December 15, 2006 at 6:35 PM
For adults, there’s always “300.”
Approved by Victor Davis Hanson.
Slublog on December 15, 2006 at 7:01 PM
Robblefarian…As a 36 time’r to WDW (started a yearly trend when I was 2, in ’71 and just got back from there last week), gotta warn you about next week (in case you’re not aware).
The week of Christmas is the busiest of the year. I’ve been there that week, when they were closing the gates at Magic Kingdom at 11am due to “capacity crowds”. Now, can ANYONE here imagine what DISNEY would consider a “capacity crowd”? Sheesh.
Here’s hoping this year isn’t typical for ya!! Enjoy!
Oh, two other points:
1) Hated SHREK, but actually loved the second. BUT…
2) If given a choice between Dreamworks and Pixar, there is NO, and I mean, NO comparison. Pixar is the new Disney. Walt made family movies that brought the family together, without crass base elements. And Pixar knows how to do this as well. The story is usally perfected LONG before the animation is begun.
Rant over.
tickleddragon on December 15, 2006 at 7:04 PM
Tell me about it… I just found my 13 year old cousin’s myspace page and, underneath her blog about doing acid, she talks about things she likes and those that should be banned. On the banned list: “capitalism, politics, ect. (sic)”
They’re really indoctrinating the kids and effing them up in the head early on these days.
NTWR on December 15, 2006 at 7:05 PM
I’ll pass on Shrek, though I’ll probably catch a matinee of Curse of the Golden Flower, with Chow Yun-Fat and co-starring, evidently, Gong Li’s cleavage. I can’t remember the last Hollywood flick I saw in the theaters.
rw on December 15, 2006 at 7:30 PM
Another pro-Shrek vote here. My five year old loves it, and it gives us material to use for inside jokes and general family bonding goofiness.
mikeyboss on December 15, 2006 at 8:09 PM
All the more reason to have traditionalist get into being producers of entertainment rather than just passive consumers.
ScottMcC on December 15, 2006 at 8:23 PM
You know, the second Shrek was pretty good. I mean, it is worth one viewing with your kids as it is pretty funny. The first one sucked though.
zerodamage on December 15, 2006 at 9:09 PM
No.
Neo on December 15, 2006 at 9:12 PM
Hey, be nice. My cousin is at Dreamworks and worked on this film. I am sure it is going to be excellent. :)
Bob's Kid on December 15, 2006 at 9:33 PM
Mike Meyers was great in Nemo. He was one of the jellyfish that stung Nemo’s Dad. It was a subtle role, but if you watch it carefully, you realize that it couldn’t have been done better.
Kevin M on December 15, 2006 at 10:00 PM
I love these full length cartoon movies. It’s the only way Eddie Murphy can be funny anymore. Ever see “Mulan”? LOVED IT! Based on a true story even, imagine that! Eddie is hilarious as the little dragon “MooShoo”. Also liked “Hunchback”, “Aladin” (Robin Williams as the Genie was excellent) and uh, hmmmm, that’s all I can think of after a 14 hour day at work.
Tony737 on December 15, 2006 at 10:45 PM
Okay, I confess, I laughed myself silly at the trailer. The first movie was great (NOT a kids flick), the second so-so (any Blazing Saddles references automatically rate at LEAST a B) and I’ll probably catch the third on video when I need a cheap laugh. That’s all it’s intended for folks, A CHEAP LAUGH!
Of course, there’s always Blackadder…
Militant Bibliophile on December 16, 2006 at 12:20 AM
Well that’s why they are rated PG and not G. I think they are made more for adults than kids in some cases and there’s nothing wrong with that IMO.
Look back at the old Bugs Bunny cartoons and you’ll see ample evidence of the same jokes that only adults would get. I always preferred that over something that was strictly for kids.
Benaiah on December 16, 2006 at 12:36 AM
I think the CG animated movies are some of the most clever and well-written movies out there, generally speaking. I don’t know if I care for all of the Shrek sequels, but the first Shrek and anything by Disney-Pixar (except for Cars, maybe, which I haven’t seen because it looks crappy) are up there with the best, in my opinion.
DaveS on December 16, 2006 at 1:26 AM
I think most of you are getting these backwards. They are made by adults and for adults. You don’t need Tom Hanks, Mike Meyers, Eddie Murphy,Ellen Degeneres, etc., for your Toy Story, Shrek, or Finding Nemo if your target audience is a bunch of little kids who couldn’t care less.
They are meant to appeal to the inner child in us adults, and as a bonus you can safely take your kids… who will NOT get the harmless abstract references to “grown up” ideas.
DaveS on December 16, 2006 at 1:36 AM
Awww! I love Shrek! Those are a major part of my “the world freaking sucks and I want to escape” DVD collection.
Growing old is mandatory .. growing UP is optional.
LissaKay on December 16, 2006 at 1:38 AM
I haven’t seen “Happy Feet” yet but I hear it’s one to avoid. It’ll scare the crap outta your kids and give ‘em nightmares. It’s tryin’ to be all pro-U.N., so it’ll give YOU nightmares. There are scary scenes of killer whales and leopard seals tryin’ to eat the penguins, but it’s advertised as a fun movie about cute little singin’ and dancin’ wisecrackin’ penguins, and who wouldn’t love THAT?
To quote the very funny penguins from the movie “Madagascar” – “Well thisssssucks.”
Tony737 on December 16, 2006 at 7:38 AM
O-VER-RA-TED! Clap! Clap! Clap-clap-clap!
Monsters, Inc. – now there’s animation gold. Finding Nemo’s solid, too.
I thought the Pinocchio bit in the clip there was pretty good, though.
token on December 16, 2006 at 9:38 AM
Wow, how could you NOT like these new types of cartoons? I for one am glad I have a 6 year old. It gives me the excuse to watch these things. Also Ice Age, Shark Tale, Flushed Away, and so many others I couldn’t begin to remember them all. They are great family movies. The kids enjoy them AND they have adult undertones that the children don’t understand (no it’s not subliminal for you black helicopter fans out there) but make them hilarious for us adults. I HATE Hollyweird but think the folks that write these stories are some talented individual to be able to appeal to all age brackets without exposing our kids to needless crap.
rayvet on December 16, 2006 at 9:38 AM
hhhmmmmm I thought I posted something about “Happy Feet”. Guess the U.N. monitors blocked it. Anyway, don’t take your kids to see this nightmare inducing, pro-U.N. propaganda piece of crap.
Was that a knock at my hotel room door? Dammit! They found me! EFF the U.N.!
Tony737 on December 16, 2006 at 9:43 AM
Shrek is unenlightened crap. Myers: “Let’s take every successful cartoon character we can think of and put cheap imitations of each in one stupid movie with me as the focal point! Talk about a Star Vehicle!”
Star Yugo is more like it. Aside from the uber-annoying voice acting and predictable jokes, the CGI wasn’t impressive at all.
JEFF_IN_NC on December 16, 2006 at 10:55 AM
I love the Shrek movies. You have to watch them at least a couple of times to catch all of the jokes for the adults.
ic1redeye on December 16, 2006 at 11:24 AM
Liberals are funny. Period. In between chuckles, however, please remember that their brand of philosophy is inherently DANGEROUS to our nation.
hillbillyjim on December 16, 2006 at 11:30 AM
Paranoia will destroy ya.
Merry Christmas, Tony737, and best wishes for your recently expanded family.
P.S. Don’t worry. If somebody at the U.N. wants you dead, you’ll probably live to be 130 years old.
hillbillyjim on December 16, 2006 at 11:41 AM
Don’t like Shrek. It has an unpleasant aftertaste of nastiness and bile aimed at Disney. The second one was atrocious and vulgar. The jokes are not clever, but very sexually oriented which is wildy wrong for kids. The computer-generated movies apart from A Bugs Life and Toy Story, are dismal and disturbing in some fundamental way. How hard is it to make a good movie anymore? The special effects, costumes, sets, whatever are outstanding, the stories are lame lame lame.
The original Looney Tunes appeal to adults and kids. Those films were clever. The new versions are dreary PC-totalitarian drek.
naliaka on December 16, 2006 at 11:44 AM
Hey thanks Jim, you too. And good point about the U.N., funny AND accurate!
