Democratic NY senator charged with fraud over charity funds

It wasn’t Al Franken this time:
A New York state senator stole $423,000 in charity money to pay for indulgences like a Dominican cigar-making company, authorities said on Tuesday as they announced charges against him.
Between 1999 and 2005 Efrain Gonzalez Jr., 58, directed the state legislature to send grant monies to a Bronx charity, where a friend redirected the funds to a shell charity that was the senator’s “conduit for paying personal expenses,” the U.S. attorney’s office said.
How do I know Efrain Gonzalez Jr. is a Democrat? For one, the article doesn’t note his political party, so one can assume he is a Democrat. Two, a Google search revealed his party.

You should remove this post. This is a Democrat, and this sort of information shouldn’t get out. Luckily, despite the popularity of this blog, the rest of the media will completely ignore this and we can all get back to attacking the “Culture of Corruption” GOP. Phew!
RightWinged on December 13, 2006 at 8:48 PM
Lol, don’t you just love when they do that? What liberal media?
RightWinged on December 13, 2006 at 8:48 PM
We ought to be able to charge this guy with fraudulently misrepresenting himself as a representative of the people of New York. That’s the REAL fraud that’s taking place here.
CyberCipher on December 13, 2006 at 9:01 PM
Not only would they have reported that he was a Republican, but they would have gotten quotes from every prominent Democrat about how this is more evidence of the “culture of corruption” that infects only Republicans.
cmay on December 13, 2006 at 9:01 PM
RightWinged,
It was reported in the NY Times, for some bizarre reason.
JammieWearingFool on December 13, 2006 at 9:02 PM
The most disgusting part of the Gonzalez fiasco is that he was already under federal indictment for mail fraud related to similar thefts, charges that could land him in prison for 20 years. Despite this all coming out months before the election, he was re-elected by a margin of – wait for it – 97-3.
flip on December 13, 2006 at 9:02 PM
.
So he has a home upstate and in the Dominican, where his wife lives, yet represents the Bronx.
JammieWearingFool on December 13, 2006 at 9:06 PM
This is truly an outrage. We need him to change parties to get this story out.
What number can I call? Norah O’Donnell’s? She loves reporting juicy gossip on republicans.
Mmmm, juicy Norah…
benrand on December 13, 2006 at 9:10 PM
Eh, where his family lives isn’t such a big deal anymore, sadly. Many politicans, both Republican and Democrat barely live in the state they represent. Santorum’s family lives in Virginia.
Ian on December 13, 2006 at 9:12 PM
I understand that when they go to DC, that’s a given. Algore was rasied in DC. But my point is if you’re in the NY State Senate, it might be a good idea to live in your district. I’m sure he has a token residence there, but find it interesting his wife lives in another country entirely.
JammieWearingFool on December 13, 2006 at 9:28 PM
True, but that’s the web site, and it’s in their “N.Y. Region” section. It’s sort of like their “local paper” section, and they couldn’t get a way with completely ignoring it. But pick up a hard copy of the paper (maybe tomorrows?) and see if you can find it… if you can it will certainly be burried. But rest assured if it were a Repub, it would have stood a good chance of making the front page. Especially given the dollar amount. This wasn’t some “free trip” on the tax payers dime, or something. We’re talking close to a half million dollar scam.
But again, Ian points out the most important point… They don’t even mention that he’s a Democrat. WTF!? It’s not shocking, and I’ve seen this kind of “reporting” before, but it never stops pissing me off.
RightWinged on December 13, 2006 at 9:34 PM
Must be a NY thing. Hillary has one too.
BacaDog on December 13, 2006 at 9:35 PM
By the way JammieWearingFool, you’re absolutely right regarding where he lives. It’s understandable when you’re talking about U.S. Senators, but we’re talking about a state senator.
RightWinged on December 13, 2006 at 9:36 PM
Profound, Ian. The media is nothing if not obvious bastards. I miss Expose the Left.
Christoph on December 13, 2006 at 9:40 PM
Ian, you have a lot of nerve to assume he is a democrat, just because the MSM never associates the D to a perp when reporting corruption about a political figure. Even tho there has never been a case when the R has been left off about a republican and a D associated to a democrat 12.7% of the time.
OH Wait…you are correct, he is a D….you are so wise.
Wade on December 13, 2006 at 9:44 PM
Suck my voter card you druid MSM. Screw the hell out of you too. Bastards.
auspatriotman on December 13, 2006 at 9:50 PM
I predict get use to this kind of story when the democrats take over congress.
William Amos on December 13, 2006 at 10:11 PM
Culture of Corruption!
x95b10 on December 13, 2006 at 10:11 PM
Also you should note Ian he didnt really steal charity money.
He seems to have established a fake charity and got GOVERNMENT money that he then embezzeled.
So it was the NY taxpayers who were ripped off.
William Amos on December 13, 2006 at 10:33 PM
“Mr. González,… was re-elected overwhelmingly last month, even though he was under indictment.”
Just like Jefferson, who has buckets of ill-gotten cash in his freezer, yet he was re-elected as well.( Though no indictment yet, I think.) Another ‘D’.
Do the ‘D’s have NO honor, no integrity? What principles do they live by? Are there any? Our leaders, how sad for our future.

right2bright on December 13, 2006 at 11:29 PM
Soothsayer, I would wish you a Merry Christmas also, but I know in my heart that this would somehow be RAAAAAAAAACIST!
Nevertheless, Merry Christmas anyway. God loves you and I love you too, opinions and all. Smile, SSayer, it’s CHRISTMAS!
hillbillyjim on December 13, 2006 at 11:30 PM
This is all nice, but how come this kid of stuff wasn’t reported before the election?
Jack Abramoff is gonna come through for the Republicans one more time and give them a majority. Culture of corruption. heh.
Iblis on December 13, 2006 at 11:31 PM
Right2bright,
You debate very well. I can’t wait until I disagree with you. Sincerely,

Since “thedecider” has already told me that I represent myself as “slack-jaw”…O brother. I realize that he was trying to pay a compliment, but it was just another invisible “bigotry” type of situation.
Just to know that my “Slack-jaw” dumb hillbilly ass was even listened to by such an eminence as decider,; well hell, that just makes me all fuzzy insider decider. You obviously hold “hillbillies” such as myself in some form of contempt; otherwise you wouldn’t automatically associate my Screen Name with anything else.
P.S. Yes, I am an Appalachian-born Southwest Virginia Hillbilly. No worries, mate.
hillbillyjim on December 14, 2006 at 1:07 AM
and the United Nations STILL sucks. thedecider, you should read more carefully; never said do away with UN, just DOWNSIZE our contribution ’til we make a point. Could take DAYS,(sarc.) but worth doing.
