People keep saying Newt in "unelectable", but I don't see how. Of the candidates above, he is the only one who is unquestionably conservative and the only one that I can think off the top of my head hasn't sacrificed principle for concensus.

After so much of Baker's "realism" and Bush's... I'm not sure what you'd even call it... I think Newt would be a great choice.

We've got to do better than these guys!

Whether it's fair or not, Newt's probably viewed by the sheeple as having too much baggage and is probably unelectable.

I’d like to add a write-in of Michael Steele please?

He would be a nice choice as VP.

Thompson/Tancredo, Tancredo/Thompson. I'm good with either slate. Oh, and I don't mean Tommie, I mean Fred.

Guiliani would make a wonderful Attorney General, because that's what he's good at. He's a cop's lawyer. But his social stances are not conservative. Not even close.

Newt is smart enough and strong enough, but he'd get slimed bad enough that the sheeple would never vote for him, even against Hillary.

Romney is socially smack-dab between Rudy and Newt, putting him in the marginally acceptable zone for me. He's a good administrator, knows how to move people around to get things done.

honora, I would be thrilled to see Gov. Richardson run. Surest guarantee that the White House will not get back into Democrat hands. He's a non-starter on immigration alone, forget his myriad policy failures.

where is Allen, he is the man for the job. He had a bad day. Why are we ready to through him under the bus for a 9000 vote loss. If Bush had got rid of Rummy a month earlier he may have won. (I am a fan of Rummy, no bull sh*( guy i like it.)

Allen could win the pres. He is Conserv. and has the Excu. experaince.
The Dems would put some one with a .38% loss as a front runner, but we don't even put him on the list.
Allen/Steele (Steele will not get the knod - would be a good counter balance to Obammmmmmma)

So Allen/Rudy that is a winner! for real!!!!

I'd like to add a write-in of Michael Steele please?

After him I'd say Newt Gingrich. Both of them are men of conviction that I would be proud to have as my President.

I don't understand how Gingrich is so high up there... :o

As for the others, I just can't live with McCain or Hagel. Those guys are like the king of RINOs.

I'm not a particular fan of Hillary, much preferred her husband. Also have thought for a while that she couldn't be elected. I am starting to think she can, especially if she runs with Obama as VP (which is what I think he is running for).

My preferred candidate is Richardson.

It's fun to prognosticate on this, but as we all know, there is so much time and so much can happen before 08. We shall see.

Gingrich is unelectable in the general.

Rudy would only win the primary if he's uncontested by a serious conservative or the field is so spread out that he'd take the plurality. Well, that and the fact that the man wouldn't survive 4 years of a presidency.

Romney is a Mormon, and he'd never win his own state without taking a hard left turn on the issues.

Condi is not an executive. She's a bureaucrat. A durned good one, to be sure, but still a bureaucrat.

McCain is in much the same boat as Rudy, except that Republicans actually like Rudy. To answer those that think that Republicans would vote for McCain against Hilaback Oblinton, you need to take a long hard look at this past election and rethink your presuppositions. The GOTV media machine (Limbaugh, Hannity, etc.) have spent the past 6+ years lambasting McCain and marginalizing him, and a significant portion of the base has already shown that they would rather not vote than vote for what they don't like.

Hillary! would likely win in a walk against McCain. The media's been keeping their powder dry on McCain, ever since 2000, happy to hold him up as a foil to Bush. Against Clinton, though, he'd be torn to tiny, bite-sized bits, and that's before the media would go to town highlighting his (as yet unheard of) famous temper, which would be on full display as he watched his carefully cultivated status as media darling evaporate in the face of the media's preferred candidate. There's nothing the Soccer Moms hate more than an ugly temper.

The liberal media wants McCain. There's a reason for it.

Romney is a contradiction the liberals cannot abide.

While more research and analysis of Romney is warranted, I find his general appeal suitable to the long term goals of conservatives in America.

It will be interesting to follow his campaign. Regardless, conservatives and legitimate Americans had best get busy -- no one is going to do the hard work of purging the scum of liberalism and cowardice from our national landscape except those of us willing to do more than "raise our voices".

Well for what it's worth from a Democrat: think the ideal candidate (by ideal meaning the one who can win) depends quite a lot on who the opposing party runs. That said, I think Gingrich is the best R option. He has downside issues--slimy personal life, mean spirited--but think he has the gravitas and enough time has gone by to soften the partisan edge. Also, he has been extremely critical of Bush and the neocons.

JetBoy…

If only Fred Thompson was 10 years younger. Hollywood would be in a snither over it though...

Well, he's only what, 66? How old was Reagan when elected? I think what the GOP sorely needs, to agree with you, is a candidate who has nationwide recognition (Fred has), who can command attention much like Reagan (Fred can), and who is comitted to the war on terror.

We need an "Im not taking sh*t from no one" kinda guy...and one look at Thompson's grimace will prove that...and he'd be a shoe-in to handle the media.

My first choice would be Condi, but she won't run.

So myslef, I will push for a Fred Thompson/Rudi ticket.

Who better to defeat a possible Hillary or Obama?

I would not call Rudi a RINO. If your main concern is outlawing abortion than Rudi is not your guy, but if that is a secondary to conservative views on fiscal policies, law enforcement, national defense, and welfare reform Rudi might be a good fit.
