Gitmo’s “cultural advisor” confirms: Suicides were a publicity stunt

To get the prison shut down. A little more evidence for something we already suspected was true.
The advisor, who cannot be identified because of military rules and concerns for his family’s safety, attributes the suicides to a misguided rumor that an act of martyrdom would result in the rest of Guantanamo’s prisoners being freed.
“They thought they were doing good, that they were sacrificing themselves,” he said. “They thought there would be planes lined up to take the others away.”
Since the suicides had no effect, “I don’t think it will happen again,” he said. “The world didn’t respond the way they thought it would.”
In fairness to the deceased, that is rather uncharacteristic of the world.
Follow that first link and scroll down for a laundry list of progressively absurd “sensitivity” measures.

I know I’m outraged every time a terrorist kills himself; but more so when he kills other people with him. If he dies alone, not so much.
lorien1973 on December 9, 2006 at 5:00 PM
They should have shuffled them around to make is look like it was working, say pretend five get free for one suicide, let them draw straws, whatever,as long as they do not take any others with them on their path to paradise let em have at it.
bbz123 on December 9, 2006 at 5:01 PM
It’s not enough. We should hire illegal immigrants to vacuum their prayer rugs.
laelaps on December 9, 2006 at 5:02 PM
A side benefit of that tactic,as insensitive as it is, is that the last ones standing would be the leaders. They always send in the fodder material for death, never themselves.
bbz123 on December 9, 2006 at 5:03 PM
I think the general reaction to the suicides were that the creeps had too many rights and priviledges in the prison and had too many opportunities to conspire and carry out plots.
You would think they would have figured that out right after 911.

I’ll buy the rope. Just no more spectacular exits, please.

Ha! Some terrorist dude’s sitting in Gitmo chit chatting with a few of his buds, bored and trying to think of something to do.
“Hey, Hassan, let’s tell Akmed that if he suicides himself we’ll all be freed. They’ll fly us out of here the same day even! hahahahah”
“Heheheh. Ohhhh Abdul, that’s so naughty! Okay, I’m in.”
“Akmed! Kill yourself for Allah and we’ll all be freed. You’ll get 72 virgins and eternity in paradise for it too. What do you say?”
“Hmmm, okay, I’ll do it!”
*heheheh* “He fell for it Akmed!”
“You’re kidding! Hahahah… oh that Hassan, what a chump. You think he’ll really do it?”
“Nah. He’s a poser. He acts all big and bad like he’s some sort of super-terrorist, but he’s really just a punk.”
“Psssst… hey Kareem, it’s Hassan. You wanna go to paradise and get 72 virgins with me? All our fellow prisoners will be released if we kill ourselves. Abdul and Hassan said so!”
“Really? Okay, I’ll do it. The food sucks here anyway.”
“Okay Kareem, it’s on, for tonight! *shhhhhh* Don’t tell anyone.”
*The next morning*
“Hey Hassan, that idiot Akmed talked Kareem into killing himself too. The idiots did it last night!”
“Really? They did? Thos imbeciles. You didn’t tell them that you were just joking?”
“Nooo… I didn’t think they’d actually do it!”
“Oh well, whaddya wanna do today?”
“I dunno… Want to tell Jamal that if he punches one of the guards in the face they’ll give us some extra clean underwears?”
“hehehehe… oh Abdul, you’re going to go too far one day you naughty naughty terrorist hehehehe”
/screw em

They had every reason in the world to think the stunt would succeed. I’m surprised it didn’t.
Coyote D. on December 9, 2006 at 5:53 PM
I bet you dollars to donuts the person who came up with the brillant idea wasn’t one of the guys who offed himself. Suckers!!!!!!!!!
EF on December 9, 2006 at 6:31 PM
They were right about the left wing’s reaction. Lefties DID want to free them. Remember they tried to get other countries to take them, but no one wanted them back?
JustTruth101 on December 9, 2006 at 6:32 PM
A stunt, huh? Shocking. Well, we knew that at the time, but their target audience still lapped it up. Most came back for seconds.
JammieWearingFool on December 9, 2006 at 7:34 PM
I think they should keep on trying.
Tony737 on December 9, 2006 at 8:51 PM
I think the guards should be overheard by the terrorist saying some of the guards are moving their families down there because it will be years and years and years before the Marine guards will be allowed to go home… I think total despair will overcome those seventh century bastards and things might settle into a routine.

“Suicides were a publicity stunt”
Duh.
This just in: Hitler hated Jews.
Tony737 on December 9, 2006 at 10:14 PM
Between the suicide bombers and the Gitmo martyrs this whole war on terrorism thing could just wrap itself up in short order. Let’s spread a rumor that it COULD work if only more would kill themselves. More suicides! We need more suicides! Really! The planes are on the way!

EF is right on the money (as always).
It’s never the higher ups, it’s always the lackies. Just like the Japanese Kamikazi pilots of WW2.
I read in the JerPost a few years ago an interview with a young kid who was recruited as a suicide bomber (a splody dope, LOVE that) and he came to his senses just in time. Anyway he explained how the higher ups told him about the virgins in heaven and all of that. But as he was walkin’ up to his target (Israeli checkpoint) he thought “If this is so great an honor, why don’t the higher ups do it?” and changed his mind. They go for the young and stu … uh, young and *impressionable*. Another prisoner even told the reporter about a retar … um, a mentally challenged (so many more letters to type just to be P.C.) kid was recruited to attack Israeli soldiers on patrol.
These guys are real heros, aren’t they? “Soldiers” for allah. Islamic “warriors”. Whatta buncha crap.
Tony737 on December 9, 2006 at 11:51 PM
As I emailed Bush at the time: send every surviving prisoner at Gitmo a sympathy necktie.
(And make sure there’s something on the ceiling of their cells to attach it to.)
I would have preferred to see these Islamaniacs shot in the field, immediately upon capture (after quick military tribunals), since they were clearly what has always, in wartime, been considered “spies, saboteurs and terrorists”.
Then there would have been no need for Gitmo, and no propaganda victories by the jihadis and their useful idiots in the Media, government and among the world’s weepy-ologists.

Less terrorists is always a good thing in my book.

Let me see if I have this: LATimes and NYT are reliable sources when they report something that supports your POV; when they report something that is conflict with your POV, they are….unreliable?
honora on December 10, 2006 at 12:25 PM
Yeah. We really got em on the ropes.

What’s your point? I see no evidence of that in AP’s comments. I can’t say much about the New York Times article because it’s a “select” opinon piece, and won’t waste my money on buying Sulzberger’s crap. But the LA Times article still has a “Gitmo Bad!” slant.

Honora: “Yeah. We really got em on the ropes.”
If more of these Jihadists decide to off-themselves, why should I give a damn? Screw them.
georgej on December 10, 2006 at 2:07 PM
That’s it’s slightly disingenuous to routinely dis these two publications but then use them as sources when it suits your purpose.
Thought that was obvious, guess not.
