Video: The Sudanese Wafa Sultan

Two good ones from MEMRI this morning. The other, in which an Iranian film critic deconstructs American sci-fi and discovers Islamophobia (ironically), is more fun. Quote:

In some cases, the message was so tangible that the viewer himself might unconsciously reach the conclusion that the prehistoric monster might be the embodiment of Islam, and that the monster underwent metamorphosis in modern times, and now threatens the very foundations of modernity.

These monsters would typically break free of the control of the normative system, and would behave in a very destructive manner. Whenever the monster would assume a more complex form, such as in Alien, it would break out of ancient eggs, which were released all over the galaxy several millennia ago. It would attack the American astronauts in the head, penetrate their minds, and nest within their bellies, and from there it would break out. During this painful delivery, it would kill the host who was contaminated by it. It was highly contagious, and would spread from one person to another. Some of these monsters had green blood, as a symbol [of Islam]. Sometimes, even this green blood itself was dangerous.

This clip’s more significant, though, so it gets the screenshot. She never quite reaches a Sultanesque boil, but the truth-to-power quotient is sky high. Click the image to watch.

Excellent. Well spoken woman. The look on the interviewer’s face was priceless. He just couldn’t believe she would not toe the Islamic line. All the stereotypes we have been taught as children about the Jews were wrong, she says. Excellent.

CrimsonFisted on December 8, 2006 at 9:56 AM

She did a great job. She was forceful, articulate, knowledgeable, and BRAVE. I’m sure the powers-that-be in the Arab world watching that interview are NOT happy about someone speaking the truth about these things–and an unveiled woman at that.

aero on December 8, 2006 at 9:57 AM

I honor this womans bravery. It is one thing to go on American TV and dissent; but to do what she did in that venue is heroism. How long before someone hunts her down, or hauls her off to court for subversion.
God Bless her strength.

right2bright on December 8, 2006 at 9:58 AM

First of all, Good Morning AllahPundit. Second, how long do you think it will be, before she’s beheaded or stoned?

amerpundit on December 8, 2006 at 9:59 AM

Here’s a link to the transcript.

Are we on the verge of a crackup of the Islamosphere along Arab / non-Arab lines? Maybe it’s too early to declare a trend, but I’ve heard a non-Arab Muslim say, “Israelis treat us better than Arabs do,” more than once.

Michael Bates on December 8, 2006 at 10:06 AM

Look at what happens when a woman is allowed to be eduated. Bravo!

Wade on December 8, 2006 at 10:12 AM

As for the sci-fi thing, I find it amusing that the guy thinks American moviegoers thought about Islam at all during the ’80s and ’90s. I would venture to guess that 99% of Americans didn’t think a thing about it, and those who did didn’t consider Muslims to be monsters or enemies–certainly not enough to interpret green alien blood as symbolic of Islam! He makes a better case about the “human monsters” in the form of terrorist bad guys in action movies, but he still ignores the real-life events that justified filmmakers’ selection of Middle Eastern terrorists as their bad guys.

Speaking for myself, during the 80s and 90s I thought very little about Islam, and when I did I assumed 99.9% of Muslims were pious people trying to live good lives just like me. I just figured they were using a different book for reference, but that they were people seeking a higher good. My current Islamophobia (yes, I admit I have it) didn’t start until 9/11.

I also found it amusing that the guy saw in Alexander the embodiment of the Americans’ fondest wish–to conquer Iran. WTF!?! Yeah, that’s my fondest wish. How ’bout you guys?! Funny how he didn’t see history in that film. Nor did he apparently comprehend that it was Macedonians and Greeks being portrayed and not Americans. Wow–an Iranian moonbat!

Supreme Irony Department:

Most of the people who captured blacks in Africa and sold them into slavery were Muslims. Descendants of those slaves abandoned the Christian ’slave religion’ they feel was imposed on them by Massa, and turned instead to… Islam.

Arabs treat blacks like crap, and when they don’t have blacks around will use Persians, Pakistanis, or Palestinians as substitutes. But the alleged black leaders will never call them on it. The Arabs hooting and hollering “Allahu Akbar” at Keith Ellison’s victory party still think he’s a n—-r. But at least he’s not a Dirty Joooo, so there’s that.

The Monster on December 8, 2006 at 10:36 AM

I’ve read a number of film critics who look on the 1950’s monster movies as a metaphor for fear of McCarthyism. Yep, I know that’s what I used to think when The Tarantula came out to devour some poor dumb deputy.

Ellen on December 8, 2006 at 10:43 AM

and an unveiled woman at that.

aero on December 8, 2006 at 9:57 AM

You mean, uncovered meat, right?

My biggest issue with the critic was his reference to Band of Brothers, and awesome mini-series. First of all, it’s history. Most of it was probably reproduced as close to what really happened as could be imagined. Secondly, Christians have been calling each other “brothers” sinc before Islam existed (so he can bite me). Thirdly, the expression itself comes from Shakespeare, who for sure didn’t consider Islam a threat since a Moore was the pro-tagonist in Othello.

As a film critic–or an intellectual, this guy is completely devoid of credibility. But as a propagandist, he has certainly earned his stripes.

I must control my irritation because of course he’s a propagandist. I know it. He knows it. His audience probably doesn’t, but if they did, they still wouldn’t cair care. The press (MSM) would probably deny it–but I wonder if they would be so willfully stupid to actually believe their own lie.

Yes, the lady is quite commendable, but was she doing the interview from Canada? It helps from her perspective. If some Islamists could have gotten into her studio and killed her live, they probably would have. Barring that, it’s a wonder the Sudanese network didn’t cut off the interview. Not that I am conceding that there is any hope for the Sudan, or for Islam more generally.

I would say that they need to get over themselves, but I’m sure that noone would be listening.

urbancenturion on December 8, 2006 at 10:48 AM

The media in most Arab countries is state controlled to an extreme by standards in the United States. Here is more evidence that the effect of the MSM is important and that bias can shape public perceptions and opinions (duh).

omegaram on December 8, 2006 at 10:55 AM

We should pray for the repose of this wonderful, brave woman’s soul. You have to know “they” are going to try to kill her, just like all the rest of the strong empowered women that we’ve seen on these broadcasts(no pun intended)

Lonevoice on December 8, 2006 at 10:58 AM

“The Arab media is responsible for all stereotypes instilled into us ever since we were kids.”

It’s refreshing to see that some over there understand this fact. But she’s not over there, she’s in Canada :(

Kevin M on December 8, 2006 at 10:59 AM

Wow, what a brave woman. From now on whenever I hear the Dixie Chicks and their ilk rant about how brave they are to crit Bush and America, I’ll be reminded of real bravery, this woman.

Mig on December 8, 2006 at 11:06 AM

A crack in the wall to let people see the dissenting views at last. The media has been perpetuating the jihadi line that Islam is monolithic, when the reality is that there is a caste sytem in Islam : It favors the Arabs, at the expense of all others, especially Africans.
No one in Christianity is expected to have to learn the Bible in English in order to be saved. Christian missions spend a lot of time and resources on translating the Bible in the local venaculars so that people will come to learn the Word of God in the language they understand best. But, in order to become a Muslim, learning Arabic is necessary to read the Koran. Translations are considered inferior. It can be argued very solidly that despite the accusations of racism and intolerance thrown out by the radicals, Islam itself could well be considered ethnocentric, and racist, by putting Arab semites at the top of the pecking order.
If the Left dominated media had been even slightly fair, the general population would be hearing this sort of talk a lot more often, because there is a lot of disgust with the way the radicals have bullied non-Arab Muslims around.

naliaka on December 8, 2006 at 11:14 AM

Sci-Fi guy:

I’m reassured that if this guy is what passes for scholarship in Iran, we’re safe. This guy had *NO* idea what he was talking about.

For one thing, if you look for “islamophobia”, you’ll find it. “Why are there cockroaches in my kitchen?” “Because the landlord hates muslims, hates Iran, and is in league with the Mossad!”

It was classic paranoia.

What was particularly telling to me was the “discussion” of the “strange” series Band of Brothers. He thought that the film maker had ripped off Iran military culture in using that title, as Iranian soldiers all, he says, call eachother “brother” on the battlefield. He’s obviously never heard of Shakespeare.

What a loon. Loved his podium, though. The flowers…very girly.

Puritan1648 on December 8, 2006 at 11:34 AM

The Sudanese lady:

Excellent! This lady’s got Malkins the size of volleyballs.

She’s what used to, back in the day, be called “uppity”. She wouldn’t let the male presenter bulldoze her. She called Arabic ethnocentrism and racism for what it is. I’m not sure if folks are aware of it, but there’s a decidedly Arab-centered set of concentric circles in Islam, and the further your peoples circle is from Riyadh, the less genuine you are as a muslim.

Furthermore, it’s nice to see her taking Arab media to task. That, and her rather frank words about Israel, and particularly her taking the “Palestinians” to task for forgetting who gave them aid in time of need.

I’ve never heard of this lady before, but she’d better buy a cast-iron girdle and a kevlar body stocking, because this is just the sort of thing which riles up the yabbos over in misogynist-land. An uppity black woman, telling the truth to the insects who infest the Middle East? Can’t have that.

Bravo, brave lady, bravo!

Puritan1648 on December 8, 2006 at 11:39 AM

How can you compare this woman to the bravery we see in the ranks of Hollywood and pop culture? I mean, George Clooney made a movie criticizing our government. I’m amazed he’s still alive. And the Dixie Chicks have received some really nasty mail.

Brave on, truth tellers.

No one in Christianity is expected to have to learn the Bible in English in order to be saved.

Not to nitpick, but it would be more correct to substitute “Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek” for “English”, since those were the original languages the Bible was written in.

Man, that’s a long sentence.

Dinsdale Piranha on December 8, 2006 at 12:23 PM

And Rosie O’Donnell. She must know that Bush’s thugs will knock down her door any day now and drag her away for daring to criticize the president and the United States every day like she does. She’s incredibly brave, too!

Puritan1648 on December 8, 2006 at 12:30 PM

Stop! Stop, man, I’m begging you! Jurassic dinosaurs and Godzilla as metaphors for Islam? Green acid “Alien Blood” as a symbol of Islam? You slay me, really! Sounds like a guilty conscience to me.

Furthermore, the film “Alexander” as representative of America’s greatest desire, to conquer and occupy Iran? Dude, as we say in this country, “It’s not all about you.” America’s true greatest desire is for Iran to just “go away”, and take the rest of the Islam world with it.

dostrick on December 8, 2006 at 12:46 PM

OK, so the “Alien” represents islam because it’s an ancient monster that kills it’s host and spreads while being highly contagious and it’s blood is dangerous? I think this guy may be on to something here! But hey dude, those are YOUR words, not ours.

Hey Einstein, that movie was directed by Ridley Scott, the same hollywood lefty who directed “Kingdom of Heaven”. If he wanted the Alien to represent islam he would’ve made it the good guy, the poor helpless little peace loving creature who was only defending himself against the eeeevil white christian capitalists.

Tony737 on December 8, 2006 at 12:48 PM

One more thing I noticed about the “film critic’s” comments–he mentioned eggs more than once, each time referring to eggs being left to hatch their malevolent contents at a later date to wreak havoc on innocents. He doesn’t explicitly state why he thinks that imagery represents Islamophobia, but I assume he is referring to the terrorist tactic of planting “sleeper cells” amongst innocents in enemy territory to wreak havoc at a later date. Very interesting. This guy sees far more evil in Islamicism than I ever did at the time those movies came out.

I majored in rhetoric in grad school (hard to tell sometimes when I dash off the occasional poorly-thought-out off-the-cuff comment, but it’s true). One thing I learned is that one can analyze anything from any angle. Let’s say 9-11 had been perpetrated by 19 chubby housewives. I could analyze any number of movies and “find” examples of chubbyhousewifephobia in them if I wanted to. And, no, as fun as it would be to do it just to make a point, I don’t have time to do it for you today. It’s kind of like a parlor trick–very funny to do and to read. (But potentially dangerous in the hands of propagandists delivering such tripe to gullible audiences.)

aero on December 8, 2006 at 12:59 PM

It’s so sad that none of the leftists or “feminists” in this country would back this woman, profile her case, make her a star. Instead they have Cindy.

Clark1 on December 8, 2006 at 1:04 PM

I’m going on the Cindy Jamba-juice diet right after Christmas. She is, like, such an inspiration to me. What did this Sudanese woman ever do? I bet she hasn’t even adopted an African AIDS baby.

Good for you! Don’t forget, if you find yourself in some backwards foreign country (like Texas) with no Jamba-Juice, you can substitute chocolate milkshakes! We’ll be here to support you in your brave fast. Just don’t let yourself waste away and die of starvation like that wimpy monk did–that’s no way to stick to your principles.

Wow did that just blow me away. That woman is very brave, even if she is in Canada.

I did a quick search on the group to see what I could find and the first was a sudanese blogger (not currently in Sudan). He has conflicting views on Israel but reading his reaction to this was worth it. He also links to LGF as “Giant of the American Right”Sudanese Thinker

How arrogant does a religion have to be to lay claim to a color (green, in this case).

Mark V. on December 8, 2006 at 2:26 PM

It’s not a religion, but, for insight into this thought process, we can ask gay people about the color purple…..and the rainbow. Seriously, just because you’re gay doesn’t mean you can go around claiming some of the best colors/symbols. I think Christianity got a few millenia jump on you with that whole ‘rainbow’ symbol.

JadeNYU on December 8, 2006 at 5:55 PM

Okay…gotta weigh in on this critic yahoo…
First of all, Star Wars was made in 77, not in 80. Second, THE MAN WHO SAW TOMORROW wasn’t a fictional film, but a non-fiction film about the writings of Nostradamus. (That dipstick obviously didn’t have a clue who Nosty was.)
Third, Alien’s blood is NOT green, but silver. And the mussies can’t even claim that color for their own.
Fouth, you guys already covered BAND OF BROTHERS…and Fifth, ALEXANDER? Are you freakin kidding me??

The funniest part of this whole thing is that this idiot is critiquing the product of Hollyweird, as if it represents pro-American attitudes. How insulting must that be to the HWeirdians?? How’s that feel, PC Weirdians? That touchy feeling cumbaya vibe just isn’t making it to Iran.

Irony…yeah?

I don’t know. How arrogant does a religion have to be to believe that its followers are destined to take over the world by force and impose Islamic law or death on the entire planet? My arrogance meter doesn’t go that high.

aero on December 8, 2006 at 7:04 PM

Aero, I got it :-)

I do remember a few years ago some imam or whatever on TV said George Lucas was an islamophobe ’cause the SandPeople were *obviously* suppossed to be muslims. I though “Yeah, either that or you see YOURSELF in the SandPeople.” They’re angry evil cowardly savages who live in the desert and attack small caravans to make a livin’. Hmmmm, I think he may have a point!
