Breaking: Jeane Kirkpatrick dead at 80

America’s first woman ambassador to the UN, who, on September 12, 2001, called for a formal declaration of war against “the entire fundamentalist Islamic terrorist network.” Emphasis hers.
She’ll be remembered for something else, though. A few years before she gave that speech, she was a Democrat; a year later, she was a Republican. Read it and bear it in mind today as the national and international leaders of the blame-America-first crowd renew relations in Portugal.
Update: Says DU, “The devil called her home.”
Update: John Little’s rounding up reaction from both sides. The claws are out, as usual, among the left.
Update: Liebs tweaks the nutroots.

Sad news.
Has anyone notified Bill the Cat?
Slublog on December 8, 2006 at 10:26 AM
heh
I love me some Bloom County.
natesnake on December 8, 2006 at 10:28 AM
Can always count on DU for compassion.
Attila (Pillage Idiot) on December 8, 2006 at 10:29 AM
I remember her well. She was tough and smart and her speeches were full of good sense. Too bad the UN is more friendly to Hans Blix and all the other bloviators.
Heh on the Bill the Cat reference – he and Jeanne had a wild and passionate affair that resulted in them being banned from the Russian Tea Room as I remember…..
RIP Madame Secretary – you were a class act all the way.

I spent quite a bit of time Googling for her classic article “Dictators and Double Standards,” considered “one of the three most famous essays in the history of American foreign policy.” I finally found it here.

How sad.
I would have voted for her if she ever ran for POTUS.
May God grant her eternal peace.

“Blame America First” was hers, what a great addition to our vocab.
And San Fran. liberals haven’t changed.
Amen

Kirkpatrick was a great American. I guess the troglodytes atthe DU forget she was a Democrat at one time. Well, they were probably in diapers when she served.

I wonder if any representatives of Hamas happened to be in Portugal recently . . .
And R.I.P. Jeanne Kirkpatrick. She was a great U.N. ambassador.

Blessed be her memory.

Democrat? Hell, she was a marxist at one time. Perfect example of growing up to become a conservative. We need more like her. I’m gonna go dig up my copy of Bloom County Babylon and drink to the old days.
Barntender on December 8, 2006 at 11:41 AM
I hope Miss Rice had the opportunity to counsel with her at least once. We need less Department and more State at the State Department.

Its a sad day for all who love freedom and don’t easily suffer fools.

That scandalous episode aside, she will be missed.

…at one time, we had Maggie Thatcher and Jeane Kirkpatrick stalking the Earth. Giants.
What do we have today? Nancy Pelosi and The Dragon Lady. Oh, for the days of giants.
She was irreplacable. I’m sure that she’s gone now because the Lord was hankering after some intelligent conversation.
She’ll be missed.
Puritan1648 on December 8, 2006 at 11:58 AM
…and exactly where is it that Howie Dean (”Dr. Howard, Dr. Dean, Dr. Fine…calling Dr. Howard, Dr. Dean, Dr. Fine….”) delivering his rousing collection of mushy platitudes?
…you can tell people by their friends. Speaking to the “Party of European Socialists” is the head of the Party of American Socialists…priceless….
Puritan1648 on December 8, 2006 at 12:02 PM
How befitting that this great lady died during this time:
- the world is at another threshhold
- the world is in need of great leaders, none on the horizon
- communism/socialism creeping back in South America
- terrorism all over
- blame America, not first but always and by all around the world
- the blame-America San Francisco Democrats taking over
- no spine and no cojones anywhere in site
- …and we have the DU crowd – to name them in the same thread with this giant is to make fools feel indignant
GT on December 8, 2006 at 11:51 AM – you summed it up to perfection.
Mr. Lieberman said it best.
To the consternation of the U.N. (and what it doesn’t represent when it should) and my absolute delight, it’s Mr. Bolton who called for a silent moment for this grand lady!
Our world and we were blessed to have had Jeane Kirkpatrick.

The best un person we ever had …… I would have voted her for president…..she is going to be missed…..
robo on December 8, 2006 at 3:18 PM
She had great polemical skill, which ought not to have been wasted in such a useless forum as the UN.
Kralizec on December 8, 2006 at 3:26 PM
Rest in eternal peace and joy to our beloved Great Lady. You will be sorely missed, and your like we may never see again.
Much much love and admiration,

You know, my dad used to talk about her when I was a kid. It’s the first time I ever heard him say he’d vote for a woman for POTUS. That’s how I came to know who she was. When MY dad says that…the woman’s GOTTA be impressive.
tickleddragon on December 8, 2006 at 3:30 PM
Sad news, she was one of the great ones..
she spoke out and people listened. She would have made a great president of the USA.

Reaganesque.
No qualifications, no reservations.
A woman of vision, who was competent to declare to others the truths she saw so clearly.
RIP

America’s Lady Thatcher. The last of the Greatest Generation. Opportunity lost.
seejanemom on December 8, 2006 at 8:13 PM
Forthright courage and uncompromising clarity.
Gone. But her memory lives on.
I look around and see…desolation.

Back in 1981, I was a Marine Guard in Pakistan. Our detachement had the duty to secure and guard her floor in her hotel. I had the opportunity to meet and speak with her on a few occasions…She impressed me as being as tough as bag of hornets…
nascardad45 on December 9, 2006 at 4:24 AM
So, will there be fawning tributes from the Today Show ala Ann Richards?
No.
No because she’s was an articulate, intelligent Republican woman.
And Two, she used to be a Democrat.
RIP.

A brilliant patriot. I was so impressed with her intellect. A absolute pleasure to listen to her speak. Literate, well spoken, tenacious. And never a wasted word.
She was a giant and will be remembered long after the current crop of political hacks and pretenders in congress and in other branches of our government.
America’s “Iron Lady”. I wish I could have cast my vote for her for President.
doingwhatican on December 9, 2006 at 2:17 PM
I’ll miss her too.
Avi Green on December 9, 2006 at 6:28 PM
Jeanne Kirkpatrick…You are already missed.
Is there anyone left that has the courage to oppose true evil, face to face? Thatcher, Kirkpatrick, Reagan. Will we ever see such Americans again?
