Some call it the most amazing high-school football game ever played. I call it a metaphor for the election.
It’s from 1994, appropriately enough.
The clip picks up with John Tyler leading, 41-17, with 2:42 left to play.
The Dallas Morning News covered it at the time but don’t read before you’ve watched. It’ll spoil the fun.

Btw, I was born and raised in East Texas. The John Tyler Plano East game is legendary. Hilarious.

That is a great finish. WOW!!!
This reminds me of our (Princeton High School) final regular season game vs. Cincinnati powerhouse Moeller High School in the fall of 1978. Both teams were undefeated and met for the opportunity to advance to the Ohio State championship playoffs. Going into the game Moeller had won three straight Ohio state championships and had like a 40 game winning streak overall.
With about 1 minute left in the game and with Moeller up 12 - 10 our junior QB, Gary Nagel, led a drive down the field with a number of unbelieveable catches by our receivers. With just seconds left our kicker, Ken Webber (who didn’t have an athletic bone in his body), wins the game with a 37 yard field goal that barely clears the goal post and lands into the Moeller band just beyond the endzone. This ended Moeller’s long winning streak and we went onto beat both Berea and Sandusky to win state that year.
From that vaunted 1978 Moeller team TE Tony Hunter went on to play for the Buffalo Bills and LB Bob Crable to the New York Jets. Bob Crable is currently the head coach at Moeller High School.

The greatest finish in college football history, Big Game, Cal - Stanford in 1982 (includes the John Elway drive for Stanford just before the final play).

Hate to be a stickler, but it’s actually - “That’s funny right there” and usually followed or preceded by “I don’t care who y’ar”.

olympian2008, you just linked to the video embedded in this post.

University of Colorado at Michigan back in 1994
With 6 seconds left in the game CU QB Kordell Stewart throws a 70 yard ‘Hail Mary’ into the endzone that gets tipped up into the air by Colorado WR Blake Anderson and gathered in by Michael Westbrook for TD and a miracle 27 - 26 victory over the Wolverines.

This one never gets old!
I was watching this game LIVE in our entertainment room. When Westbrook made the catch I jumped up and yelled “TOUCHDOWN!” and our cat ‘Rocky’ went running out of the room so fast he was a blur.

Thanks. That was fun.

The whole way through I was thinking “See, the Steelers still CAN make the playoffs… I knew they could…”
Then I saw the last play. Guess there’s always next year for the Stillers. Sigh.
dalewalt on December 6, 2006 at 8:54 AM
At least you’re not the Eagles. (sigh)
Good Lt on December 6, 2006 at 8:57 AM
Not that I particularly like the Eagles :-), but they’re not doing that bad… 6-6, and have a pretty good shot at getting into the playoffs. Plus Garcia looked pretty good last Saturday (in fact I may start him in my fantasy league playoffs), and above all, you don’t have to put up w/T.O. anymore :-)

Thank you, Right Winged, for the Texas Tech video!!!

“I’m gonna throw up.” Gotta agree…the best line of the whole thing! I remember them showing this on ESPN!
danarchy on December 6, 2006 at 10:07 AM
All I thought was “OH NO” as soon as the KO returner hit the outside behind “the wall.”
Absolutely. The life lesson here: Don’t ever quit (and neither team did).
VikingGoneWild on December 6, 2006 at 10:33 AM
When they score the go-ahead touchdown with 31 seconds left, you think “huh…almost too much time left”.
Heh.
I never saw it coming until the video breaks to Plano lining up for the kickoff. Then you go…”oh, no; you’ve got to be kidding”.
Jaibones on December 6, 2006 at 11:27 AM
Was this game the inspiration for the movie “Friday Night Lights”?
I don’t care who y’ar, that’s a good movie right there!
BlueStateBlues on December 6, 2006 at 11:46 AM
Ah, living in Texas where the state religion is Football!
Love it!
Jen the Neocon on December 6, 2006 at 11:59 AM
Friday Night Lights is about a football season at Odessa Permian- Odessa, Texas.

WOW, I saw that heading and freaked out. I live in Tyler, born and raised. CUJO!
gradyman on December 6, 2006 at 1:14 PM
Thank God. From what I know of Texas high school football, the townspeople might have hung the John Tyler team had they not pulled it off.
thegreatbeast on December 6, 2006 at 4:22 PM
Not nearly as bad as the 31 to three Choke at Doak.
Alan on December 6, 2006 at 4:46 PM
I was at the Orange Bowl when my akma mater ‘Canes took “Wide Right II” I thought the freaking stadium was going to collapse.
It was by far the best game I ever saw…or maybe Dean Hausler’s pre-game kegs on the slab back at UM had something to do with that, I dunno.
