SFSU might defund college Republicans for stepping on Hamas, Hezbollah flags

It seems they’re guilty of religious intolerance because those flags have the Arabic word for “Allah” on them. Which means, according to SFSU, when you trample on Hamas and Hezbollah you’re not trampling on a perverted, extremist view of Islam.
You’re trampling on Islam.
No doubt Hamas and Hezbollah would agree.
The makeshift flags were those of Hezbollah and Hamas, two Islam-based political parties in the Middle East designated by the United States as terrorist organizations. Leigh Wolf, a member of the College Republicans, said the group was unaware of what the Arabic symbols meant until some Muslim students brought it to their attention.
“The goal was to desecrate Hezbollah and Hamas, not Islam,” Wolf said…
“It’s the equivalent of stepping on the cross. How would Christians feel?” said Ali Algarmi, 21, an SF State Muslim student studying sociology. “We see that as being spit on the face.”
After learning of the religious symbols the College Republicans let some Muslim students alter the flags to be less inflammatory before walking on them in protest of terrorists.
“That’s something very holy, and stepping on it, it’s disgracing Islam,” Brian Gallagher said, an SF State student and General Union of Palestinian Students, or GUPS, member.
SFSU has been one of the most viciously anti-semitic campuses in America for years now, and not always peacefully so. Israeli flags — which of course feature the star of David — no doubt are desecrated regularly. Anyone been defunded? Anyone even complained?
Two short clips from the rally have been posted on YouTube. Neither one has footage of the flags but they’re useful for flavor.

SFSU is a complete disaster as are most californian colleges

I know I’m supposed to be outraged or something, but come on, it’s SFSU! We have effing Evergreen State College up here to deal with. We produced Rachel Corrie. I mean, Rachel Corrie, for dog sakes!

This brings up an interesting point.
When religeous symbols are used on national flags, it can be very hard to determine if use of that symbol is intended as a protest against that political symbol, or a religeous symbol.
The Star of David/Israeli Flag is very often times used in political ads criticizing Isarel or Israeli politicians, or policies, etc.
So when this is done, is it a political point, or a religeous slur?
If someone steps on a US flag, it p*sses us off a whole heck of a lot. And rightly so. But no one really sees any religeous implications there.
But if someone steps on an Israeli flag, now we have to start wondering if this should p*ss us off because it is an attack on the political entity known as Israel? Or is this an attack on Jews everywhere?
So now we have these SFSU Republicans.
Are they making a political statment against Hamas/Hezbollah? Or attacking Muslims everywhere?
Well to me, it seems clear that they were simply making a valid political point. And now a bunch of jerks are trying to use Political Correctness to attack these guys.
Welll, this problem isn’t going to go away. Whenever you have national symbols with religous themems/words on them, this is going to come up again and again.
Remember, if you do anything with the flag of Iraq, well it has the arabic script for “God is Great” on it.
So is it a national symbol, or a religeous one?
Sigh….
Anyway, I haven’t read the article yet, but those SFSU Republicans have my sympathy and I hope it works out OK for them.

SFSU = STFU
Attila (Pillage Idiot) on December 5, 2006 at 6:15 PM
STFU, SFSU.
What a joke. Painting the Virgin Mary with poo or sticking a cross in a bottle of urine is OK, burning the US flag is okay, but stepping on the flags of our country’s enemies is worthy of defunding?
Defund SFSU.
NTWR on December 5, 2006 at 6:18 PM
Dang Attila, beat me to the punch.
NTWR on December 5, 2006 at 6:19 PM
So they can not step on the flags because no one steps on Christian churches. So it would be OK to burn the flags then.
Agrippa2k on December 5, 2006 at 6:19 PM
They did this in SFSU. I am so very outraged.
Ouabam on December 5, 2006 at 6:21 PM
does that mean the next time they jump on the star of david i can claim anti semitism? (crickets chirping)
Defector01 on December 5, 2006 at 6:22 PM
The college republicans should ask the ACLU for assistance. I’d be very interested in hearing what excuse they use for turning them down.
darwin on December 5, 2006 at 6:22 PM
BTW, in Allahpundits exerpts, the name “Wolf” is mentioned.
If you go to the article, you see the name “Leigh Wolf.”
You might assume that this is a womans name. It is not.
Leigh Wolf is a man.
You see two SFSU republicans in the videos. He is the clean shaven one.
EFG on December 5, 2006 at 6:26 PM
Burning and desecrating the American or Israeli flag: perfectly OK. Stepping on Hamas, Hezbollah flags: abhorrent.
It’s good to have your priorities straight.

…in San Francisco, all things are relative….
Puritan1648 on December 5, 2006 at 6:37 PM
No, but it was considered free speech and non-actionable. I find the posters linked above much more outrageous than the stepping on of flags, and that was at SFSU. The real outrage should come from the co-mingling of religion and state on the flags.
NTWR on December 5, 2006 at 6:38 PM
…I wonder if the students of SFSU flew the hakenkreuz or rising sun flags back in 1943…somehow, I doubt it.
…Leftists…claiming religious affront…rich….

Article the third [Amendment I]
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Lets see… freedom of Speech? … check…
Freedom of religion??? (that freedom has to encompass the ability to OPPOSE another religion)… yep…
What part of this is hard to get past???
Crude? Perhaps… actionable??? uhhh… no…
Romeo13 on December 5, 2006 at 6:39 PM
But … Those things only apply to republicans and anything associated with republicans. Right? Not SFSU.
darwin on December 5, 2006 at 6:41 PM
Gee, what about all those Danish flags with those little crosses on them. Muslims burning them wouldn’t be denigrating Christianity would they? No, they’re probably just lactose-intolerant and have a beef with Danish dairies…and those darned cartoons.
G on December 5, 2006 at 6:43 PM
And as a sign of friendship, Hamas and Hezbollah will punish those who stepped on and burned the American flag by reducing the funding going to each suicide bomber by one dollar.
pocomoco on December 5, 2006 at 6:44 PM
I wonder what the reaction would be if they used the Hezbollah and Hamas flags as toilet paper?

I’m all for what those students did and what they stand for. Good for them for speaking out.
But, if they’re going to talk about flags, they should at least learn how to display OUR flag correctly.
The field of stars is ALWAYS displayed in the upper left regardess of how it’s hung. They have it facing their audience incorrectly.
kmackie6612 on December 5, 2006 at 6:54 PM
Clearly, when informed that the flags contained the name of Allah, the correct course of action would have been to stop walking on it, and urinate on it, instead.
This, of course, would inspire Corrigan to expel the boys for public exposure, which would otherwise be welcomed at the university.
Jaibones on December 5, 2006 at 6:55 PM
Maybe the California Legislature ought to defund CSUSF.
MattSkosh on December 5, 2006 at 6:56 PM
If you are guys really want to separate church and state. Ban anybody who proclaims religion or worship God or gods from becoming a public elected official or appointed official.
That is a big step.
What we are doing now is like going into a church; then, claiming to be deaf throughout the sermon.
Ouabam on December 5, 2006 at 6:59 PM
LOL….stamping on and stamping out the christian religion has been a hallmark of higher education for years and now they are mad?
I’d say something else, but I don’t want Allahpundit or MM to get blamed by some left-wing,christ-hating blog for “inciting violence” against any particular unnamed groups or individuals, thus smearing this blog’s good name.

Well then lets start putting Islam on the same level as Christianity. Matt, Tre make a Muhammed skit pronto.
Heck defund the college Republicans. Then lobby the 40% of San Franciscans that voted in favor of keeping ROTC for support. Have an affirmative action bake sale and they can fund themselves. You can’t stop capitlaism baby.
Theworldisnotenough on December 5, 2006 at 7:18 PM
They should wait until one of the Muslim student groups desecrates an Israli flag and then prep themselves for a possible Establishment Clause suit.

JackM on December 5, 2006 at 7:48 PM
I fail to see what is holy about a Hamas or Hezbollah “flag”. These are simple flags of terrorist organizations, not nations.
So, what this student is saying is that Islam is synonymous with terror? Interesting.
Tell me that part about a minority of extremists who have hijacked a religion again…
reaganaut on December 5, 2006 at 8:31 PM
So whats the beef? They arrested a guy in Tucson, AZ for burning a mexican flag. He stood trial and beat it. called inciting a riot, not burning a flag.
By the way, have you heard of any arrests lately for burning the flag of USA?
navy1946 on December 5, 2006 at 9:04 PM
they should have burned the flags.
kara26 on December 5, 2006 at 9:30 PM
It’s terrifying that the lefties in these videos are the overwhelming majority, and “the future” of America. I was with a friend and his girlfriend heading to a party a month ago when I noticed he needed new windshield wiper blades (in his Jeep Cherokee by the way).. He’s like, “yeah, I’ll have to go to the auto parts store this week”, and I said something like “I’d go to Walmart, they’re pretty cheap. They’ve got a couple brands and better prices”. His idiot college girlfriend felt the need to say “Walmart is evil.” Not in a joking way, she was dead serious. Rather than make an idiot out of some 22 year old in front of her boyfriend (my friend), I just changed the subject… but it annoyed the hell out of me. But I wanted to say “What are you basing this on? Because some other hippy kids or professors at school told you that?”
I’m just so tired of overpriveleged rich college kids wanting to be “the voice” of people they have no understanding or knowledge of.
RightWinged on December 5, 2006 at 9:36 PM
At SanFranState, previouly California State University, San Francisco before they changed the name back to SFSU, the freedom-loving Hard Lefties on campus ( a flatulently large contingent, always on the lookout for thought-crimes ) checked out and then destroyed over a hundred books and journals which they found offensive–i.e., conservative
The admin dhimmis did nothing, and the items were not replaced. Proof? Go there and try to check out anything anti-PC from that era. It will come up “lost / no longer available”
I love the smell of hypocrisy in the past…..

Kini on December 6, 2006 at 2:25 AM
College Republican – oxymoron. College are full of hard core lefties. They go in to college not knowing anything about politics, they come out of college as left wingers but they still don’t know anything about politics. The professors brainwash ‘em, give ‘em lower grades if they debate, refuse to hear any other viewpiont, etc, this is why I didn’t go to lefty re-education camp (college) and instead went into the Air Force. I learned more there than all of my college friends combined.
Also, why are we still letting our “friends” the Saudis run the islamic studies programs in our colleges? These programs were set up to teach future FBI / CIA agents about our enemies around the world. Today they teach kids that WE ARE the enemy!

Why, on the very RIGHT side bar of a very nice blog I know—it offers a link where the very most tolerant among us could buy a Book of Peace, if one so chose.
Every home should own one.

The shock is that there are Republicans at SFSU.
My daughter went there for one semester, was all but kicked out of the dorm because till 3 am rap music was blasting (everynight). When confronting the adminsitration (rule:no music past 11 pm) she was labeled a rascist. Rap music was considered part of the black culture therefore exempt. Best lesson she ever learned, the liberals are not liberal. She was physically attacked (pushed around), and dorm broken into several times. Thank you SFSU you made a great conservative that semester.

Kick California out of the union and see how long they last as a communist state. Better yet send these goose stepping idiots over to the Middle East, and let’s see how long they last! Do you think the terrorist scum who cut off Nick Birds head asked him which political party he belong to before they murdered him?

Why we stand by and allow our colleges and universities to be overtly leftist, hate-America, institutions, I’ll never understand.
There is an excellent document, Defending Civilization: How Our Universities Are Failing America available on line that documents the hatred of America that was expressed by academia after the 9/11/01 attack.
The genesis of the opposition to the war in Iraq began on 9/11/01, with academia’s response to the attack. There are over 100 specific examples of academia’s hate-America campaign. Here’s one example:
Something MUST be done. There are only a handful of colleges in America that are not dependent on some level or another on federal money. They lost big-time over allowing military recruitment on campus. Why can’t we, the people, demand that overtly anti-American behavior and PC-speech codes be banned and those that support them get fired, tenured or not?
