Breaking: Bolton resigns; Update: George Mitchell on the short list?

Just across at Fox. He’ll stay on until the end of his recess appointment but that’s it. Not a surprise, really.
Bad things happen when you lose your majority.
Standby for updates. While you wait, watch Lou Dobbs’s tribute from a few weeks back.
Update: His recess appointment ends as soon as this session of Congress does, which means he could be out by the end of the week. No more of this, alas:
Update: Interesting:
Although Bush could not give Bolton another recess appointment, the White House was believed to be exploring other ways of keeping him in the job, perhaps by giving him a title other than ambassador. But Bolton informed the White House he intended to leave when his current appointment expires, White House deputy press secretary Dana Perino said.
Update: Happy day at Turtle Bay, huh?
Update: Hotline has the text of Bush’s statement. Quote:
I am deeply disappointed that a handful of United States Senators prevented Ambassador Bolton from receiving the up or down vote he deserved in the Senate. They chose to obstruct his confirmation, even though he enjoys majority support in the Senate, and even though their tactics will disrupt our diplomatic work at a sensitive and important time. This stubborn obstructionism ill serves our country, and discourages men and women of talent from serving their Nation.
Update: John Miller suggests Santorum as a replacement. It’d be interesting to watch some of the Dems pull their punches out of residual collegiality but they’d never confirm him. The nutroots wouldn’t let them.
Update: Drudge has a hot tip that George Mitchell is on the short list to replace Bolton. There’s nothing about it on the wires. First Rumsfeld is canned, then Mel “Amnesty” Martinez is nominated for RNC chair, and now allegedly he’s thinking of appointing a Democrat to the UN. He’s really embracing this bipartisan thing, huh?
Potential Machiavellian silver lining: maybe Bush has military plans for Iran and wants to trade on the international goodwill Mitchell earned from the Irish peace process when the attack eventually comes.
Update: The Times is using its story on this to mock Bush.
Update: Video of Bush’s press conference with Bolton is here.

on the short list?
so is danny devito.

Why are all you so-called political junkies blaming this on Bush or even the elections? Bolton couldn’t be voted out of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee either then or now. Even the big boys and girls are forgetting this in their emotionalism.
baldilocks on December 4, 2006 at 12:59 PM
baldilocks, you make the point, perhaps without realizing…what the ‘political junkies’ refer to is the lack of cojones the conservative leadership in the Senate displayed.
Frist only talked about the “nuclear” option but never meant it. Mr. Bush didn’t push it either.
Bolton would have won in an up-or-down vote. Frist allowed the ‘gang of 14′ to take over. They’ll die with their noses in their righteous bipartisan ‘good-for-the-country’ rear ends. History will record the prima donnas for what they were/are.
Entelechy on December 4, 2006 at 1:10 PM
Let me jump on the bandwagon. That nailed it!
I can’t wait for the next congress to begin and watch the Republicans circle the wagons and attempt to thwart and stifle every piece of legislation the Democrats put forward. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander, right?
Ceptin’ that’s never gonna happen. We all know they will roll over on their backs and play nicey nice …. just like they did when they had all the power.
Un-Boltonesque Wimps!
fogw on December 4, 2006 at 1:56 PM
I believe what held Bolton up was Chafee using a parliamentary tactic that delayed the vote. Even after the election he refused to release the hold.
The nuclear option only applied to the judiciary picks.

Bush has proved once again his lack of balls and brains. Surrender to the Dhimmicrats, illegals and Muslim hordes. It will interesting to see what Bolton’s number two has to say about what caused this.
For me this is the last blown fuse. Put Cheney in. I’ve freaking had enough.
——————–
Follow up 10 minutes later:
Just got off the phone with my contact in Bolton’s office. So Malkinettes here is the inside scoop. You all know Bolton can’t be Christmas appointed a second time. Even if he could Mike wasn’t going to get paid and quite frankly working in New York is expensive. With no end in sight (Harry Reid hates him as much as he hates America) dealing with the Dhimmicrats, Bolton said good bye I’m out of here.
What is interesting to note is that Bolton’s number two, Chris Burnham has left also. Partially out of disgust. Donald Trump was in Chris’s office telling him it was going to take $700,000,000 to redo the UN building. A figure that Burnham may have thought was high to start out with. Realistically with all the red tape the UN remodel is going to take a $1,000,000,000 (yes folks a billion and we are paying half of it. Burnham not wanting to sit on this pile of BS left with his head held high and has taking a job with a German bank (Deutsche Bank).
I left the first part of my post up because without having the full story I’m sure quite a few other folk are going through the same reaction. But now you know the rest of the story.

Perhaps Michael Bolton is available? His sissy-like ways would swoon the losers at the U.N.
Perhaps Richard Simmons or Christopher Lowell would be less offensive to the Democrats?
I know: FABIO!
Black Adam on December 4, 2006 at 2:12 PM
Bradky, you are absolutely right. However, that action (gang of 14) changed everything going forward…I’m so happy Chaffee lost. The most measly person in Leadership, ever!
baldilocks, I don’t know what message you wanted to send me. I assure you that ‘funk’ doesn’t describe me at all. Maybe I don’t understand your message. Regards,
Entelechy on December 4, 2006 at 2:28 PM
All this does is make Bush look even weaker. Perhaps he should consider stepping aside and letting Cheney serve out his term.
While there is still something to salvage.
George Mitchell? Give me a #&%*@?/ break!

Maybe George McGovern is available.

ARE YOU ALL READY TO ADMIT THAT BUSH IS A PIECE OF SH*T NOW? If even the CONSIDERATION of this Demoncratic waste bag, doesn’t sway you, nothing will, coolade drinkers!
NEWSFLASH: BUSH is NOT a conservative and his “religion” stops short of actually DOING ANYTHING about the onslaught of homosexuality that is being shoved down our children’s throats by liberal dungeonmasters posing as teachers, when they’re not screwing the students, that it. If Bush was anything decent at all, he would have issued “stern denials” over the mention of a democrat, but all I’ve heard from that bunch of fake assed conservatives who LAUGH at REAL CHRISTIAN LEADERS WHO COME TO VISIT, is f’ing silence. BUSH SUCKS, DOWN WITH BUSH! BUSH SUCKS, DOWN WITH BUSH!!!!!!!!

Entelechy on December 4, 2006 at 3:30 PM
I agree except that he is pretty old. I know both the Brits and the Irish think he hung the moon for the work he did over there.
honora on December 4, 2006 at 3:38 PM
Sickening. Bush should have fought harder to get Bolton confirmed, but he would have been confirmed anyway without the opposition of Voinovich and then Chaffee. Shame on them.
Bush should leave the position vacant in protest. Mitchell had the reputation of being highly partisan when he was the Senate Majority leader. I was impressed by him when he gave the commencement address for my son’s graduation at Dartmouth in 1999, but nonetheless feel that Republicans should oppose his nomination should it come up. After all, not only is he is a highly partisan Democrat, but his “peace” agreement negotiated for Northern Ireland did not hold as well.
Bush seems determined to leave office with a lower approval rating than Truman. Nominating Mitchell would help in this regard. If he pushes through amnesty, it will be in the low teens.
ptolemy on December 4, 2006 at 3:51 PM
George Mitchell would sell his soul, if he hasn’t already, to make republicans look bad.
kmcguire on December 4, 2006 at 3:57 PM
Why would you think this?
honora on December 4, 2006 at 4:12 PM
TOO ABRASIVE!!!?? What the hell are we running here a freakin hallmark card store. If Bolton is abrasive then Biden is outright obnoxious!! John Bolton is a rare breed. If I was still getting in bar room brawls I’d want Bolton on my side. We would turn back to back and fight our way out the door. Excuse me now while I go cry in a corner somewhere.

…why not…the NYT gave up doing journalism long ago in favor of being the party organ of Stalinism-lite. Why not use column inches and bandwidth to dig against the enemy…Bush, not the jihadis, as if I have to tell anyone here….

In other words… If we can survive our own government bureaucracy and political tomfoolery, we can survive just about anything.
You’re more right than you know.

…good for what? Making coffee? Making the dictators of the world “feel good about themselves”?
…and he was liked by the Brits, Orangement and Irish terrorists because he gave ‘em cover.
…hell…you don’t appoint someone UN ambassador because he’d make a good department store Santa. When we’re footing as much of the bill as we do, you appoint someone who’ll see to it that we get value for money…or else.
The UN exists by mutual consent of the signatory nations. They need to be reminded that they live by the good opinion of others…not from any inherent right to rule.
Puritan1648 on December 4, 2006 at 4:39 PM
But, Sooth, tell us how you really feel about Bush…
thebookkeeper on December 4, 2006 at 4:40 PM
OK, One more knife from Bush, and my back is filled up.
We, the people, came up with a way to pay Bolton directly, so a second recess appointment would have been possible.
I expect that knife will be Amnesty… But, maybe they will surprise me and come up with something new and unexpected first.
Next time they (Bush admin, Gop etc.) ask me for money they are only getting these:

In the spirit of uniting and healing old wounds, Bush needs to nominate Joe Wilson for the position. I hear he already knows the former Minister of Mines for Niger, so he’s obviously well-qualified enough.

He couldn’t get along with the Aunt Jemima girl.
Man, I knew and I told all of you, she is a sellout…She sided with the hezbolah in defeating Israel.
She is a dangerous woman.

For the Belfast Agreement. You know, the one that brought about peace between two groups from the same nation who historically differed on religion and had resorted to terror.
Heck, you never know, that sort of thing may come up again.

Am I the only one who objects to this sort talk?
honora on December 4, 2006 at 5:16 PM
LZVandy,
Once again, I must disagree with your seemingly racist and clearly offensive hyperbole. The Aunt Jemima girl?
Come on, dude; show us you can object to the State Department’s knee-jerk pandering to the Palestinian terrorists without referring in a derogatory manner to Condi’s race, as if that has anything to do with anything.

Allahpundit,
In no way was my comment to be taken as any kind of revenge fantasy, nor am I attempting to incite others toward that end. My comment was simply an observation based on what I’m seeing around me. If you’ve read any of my posts you know my positions and opinions, and I have always tried to be a voice of reason.
I know your comment is directed elsewhere, but my nic is involved and I feel responsible. I understand and agree about the nutroots vulnerability. We have enough problems without inviting that.

Thanks for clarifying things. It’ll save me time reading your posts in future.
Lookee here:
You don’t like her stance on Lebanon — I don’t — fine.
You don’t like her general societal politics — I’m liking what I see less and less — fine.
If you don’t think she’s qualified — I’d disagree, what with her having a doctorate, service as a university provost and full professor at Stanford, Senior Fellow of the Institute for International Studies, and a Senior Fellow (by courtesy) of the Hoover Institution and service on and off since the ‘80′ in and around the DOS — fine.
If you don’t like her *COLOR*…sorry. That isn’t changing any time soon.
No reason I should that I can see. Here we don’t agree. Not one little bit.
If you don’t agree with what someone does, fine. If you don’t agree with what someone says, fine. If you don’t agree with what someone leads you to think they think or believe, fine. If you discount their humanity based upon their skin color — which is the *ONLY* thing that the “Aunt Jemima crack can mean — you’re bringing us all down…and I’m low enough to resent any further demotion, thank you very much.

Damnit, I hate it when my comments don’t get posted. Is that some kind of connection collision, Allah?
I’m gonna post this again because I don’t like being tarred with this particular brush.
No, it isn’t. We lost fair and square; this is what happens. Tough shit.
I don’t want to hear this garbage again. Not only is it creepy but neither Michelle nor I feel that way — yet we’re the ones who’ll bear the brunt when some nutroots moron like Olbermann sees your comment and exploits it to smear her as having “incited” you to violence.
Take the revenge fantasies to Free Republic, okay? Next time it’s a banning.
I did not and am not advocating or inciting any kind of domestic violence.
This is what I said, just so we’re clear:
If you’ve read any of my charter member posts since the launch of HotAir, you will find me non-incindiary and consistantly striving to be a voice of reason here.
I understand the nutroots vulnerability, and I agree that we should not give them any kind of levers to use against this site or MM, in general.
Again, that was NEVER my intention.
techno_barbarian on December 4, 2006 at 5:42 PM

Apologies for the multiple posts all. But I would rather not be banned at one of my favorite places.
techno_barbarian on December 4, 2006 at 5:43 PM
I was giving the benefit of the doubt on the Jemima thing; I thought he was quoting Joe Wilson from the post above or referencing the many cartoons that have been published characterizing her as the Aunt.
But either way it was indeed over the top.
SoS Rice is indeed a brilliant, accomplished woman.
I’m no longer a fan of hers because of her obvious disdain for Israel and the general globalist tendencies she has exhibited since moving on up from National Security Adviser.
But she is probably smarter and more competent than any 5 of us regular posters here put together.

Hey, just look on the bright side. This is just another area for the dems to fail in. They’ll confirm an appeaser … someone who fawns over the dictators and tyrants and knows how to kiss ass at UN cocktail parties. It will all come out in the end … by about 2008 I’m thinking.
darwin on December 4, 2006 at 6:40 PM
….getting heated and windy on this thread.
honora, as is usually the case, you are wrong about Mitchell deserving credit for the current structure for talks on the Six Counties ( only the British use the term ‘Northern Ireland’ ), and wrong about him being admired by either the English or Irish people. He was a device of some use for a limited time, after which he and Clinton ( typicaly ) took credit for what they had virtually nothing to do with
Janos Hunyadi on December 4, 2006 at 7:23 PM
I’d like to say a special thanks to the commenter in this thread who left a disgusting “joke” about threatening the UN building now that Bolton’s gone. Your comment has, predictably, been picked up by several lefty blogs and used to smear HA as a “hate” site.
And thanks to everyone else, including/especially LZVandy, who spouts off with whatever repulsive thought crosses their mind with nary a care about how it might reflect on me or Michelle. I really, really appreciate it. Glad you’re enjoying the hospitality.

Hang tough, AP. The great majority of us know how hard you work at keeping an even keel to this ship.
But I have to say, as foolish as LZVandy’s garbage was, there’s another here who seems to get away with as bad or worse. Is it only racism that draws that level of offense?
-
I’m an evangelical Christian, and am most certainly as far from a supporter of abortion or gay rights as one can get, but the “angry Christian” bit offends me no end. The m@rk*d up profanity in Soothsayer’s posts, the shrill proclamations of who is and isn’t going to hell, I don’t believe they belong here. People who claim Christ but have venom instead of forgiveness in their hearts make it harder for folks like me to take to others about Christ, something that matters infinitely more than which side of the political aisle has power.
On topic, Bolton is just the latest in a long line of good men that have been turned off from a heartfelt desire to serve their country in a great way. A few more and only the most corrupt will remain. That’s a shame, one that would make the founders weep.

Wow! Bannings and mentions of people headed for Haities. Yup, this is one “hot” thread.
Double bummer about Bolton leaving and Mitchel perhaps being nominated. Seems everyone has let us down during this 2nd Bush term… Bush, Condi, the Senate leadership. Who’d I miss?
The only silver lining was the House. Ah yes, the House… *sniff* *sniff*
CliffHanger on December 4, 2006 at 9:56 PM
Maybe a Mitchell appointment is a sign the United States will simply do what’s best for the United States, without consultation with the UN. Mitchell’s role will be to play nice, absorb the verbal blows, and generally smooth things over with member nations.
HA! HA! Whoa… I must be dreaming again.

Rick on December 5, 2006 at 12:39 AM
Too bad Lurch doesn’t realize it’s a turn in the wrong direction. This decision sickens me. We finally get someone in the U.N. who isn’t afraid to speak for the interests of the U.S. (and the better interests of the world) and yet, political bickering forces him out. Instances like these (but only these) make you admire dictatorships. You wish Bush could just appoint the man and we’re done. Alas, the U.N. becomes irrelevant again. Seems they’re doomed to that fate.
thedecider on December 5, 2006 at 12:45 AM

thedecider on December 5, 2006 at 1:19 AM
Man, I’m with you on this one and it seems to be an idea that is on more than a few minds. I’ve heard guys at work who are far from revolutionary types talking about how much meanness there seems to be out in society now and that the ranks of the self-important seem to be taking over. You can see it in the way people drive, how they shop, and how they all seem to think that they are entitled to be “first” in everything regardless of preparation and application of effort. One other thing that I notice is that alot of people seem to link the amount of money that they make to their self-perception of their worth to society……that is scary.
We have made them that way, nobody knows humility anymore, and we may suffer for it.
quax1 on December 5, 2006 at 4:03 AM
It’s a pity, it’s a downright crime.
Bolton was a real advocate for the United States in the UN. He is the best since Jeanne Kirkpatrick from way back when. This is a grave loss for our country.
This is what you get when you hand the Senate over to the dark side. With absolutely no muscle in the Republican party we Conservatives are again undermined and the dems, utilizing their game of dirty politics, continue to further ignore and disregard our interests in this dangerous and fragile world.
A terrible loss to freedom and the safety of Americans.
It’s a pity, it’s a crying shame.
doingwhatican on December 5, 2006 at 4:03 AM
“WE” is too all inclusive. “We” didn’t make people that way, dems and liberals did with their constant battle to loosen societal restrictions, minimalizing religion and faith (not to mention fostering outright hostility to Christians), and glamorizing socialism as if it’s natural. People are being taught that no ethics are good, and get what you can without doing anything to get it. Nanny state people.
darwin on December 5, 2006 at 7:45 AM
The bottom line is that President Bush has abandoned the concept of executive prerogative. So since Presidential appointments, from here on out, will be decided solely at the discretion of the Majority Party, if he will not fight for Bolton, who will he fight for? Surely not his next Supreme Court nominee!
Whoever said it may have been correct! We, well most of us any way, were born in an era where the Office of the President was the preeminent branch of government and that was not always the case.
Therefore, in my opinion, because President Bush will not fight for those he appoints, he has allowed that preeminent status, and the power that goes along with it, to revert to the Congress. Perhaps that it as it should be. I just don’t know and perhaps some of you who are more learned would care to comment.
PS. I would still like to see a question or comment posted on HOTAIR from time to time for “members” to comment on, rather than just responding to “breaking news”! Anyone agree or am I alone out here on the ocean??
Dread Pirate Roberts VI on December 5, 2006 at 9:00 AM
I am not wrong. I have many friends and relatives in Ireland and have had the opportunity to work closely with government officials and business leaders in both parts of Ireland all thru the 90s, including the Taoiseach on occasion.
And as for “as usually the case”–really? What a smarmy, toady thing to say. Hope this won’t usually be the case.

Is the fact that the Republicans are still in control until January when the new Congress convenes? Bush knows he won’t get Bolton confirmed with his own party in power. The guy simply has no juice.

Maybe we could chip in and send him a case of that Hoodia Juice I receive spams on every 5 minutes!!! Or may prune juice! Think it might help??? Does anyone bottle “Spine”?

I humbly apologize to AP, MM, and readers and commenters here on Hot Air. I made a flippant comment that was in very poor taste without regard to how it could be exploited. No excuses.

Dread Pirate Roberts, I’m in full agreement with your comment of December 5, 2006 at 9:00 AM
Also, honora, it’s not that Mr. Bolton doesn’t have enough juice, the problem is his is too concentrated.
To John Kerry – he was against Mr. Bolton before he was against him. Pay no attention to this windbag. No one, but no one cares what he has to say, not even Mrs. Heinz. Well, maybe he has a good dog.

Heh, Janos, I know how great these sayings are. Also, there is one, a good one, for every single occasion. It wouldn’t be the first time I was foolish either :)
Here is the homepage, including that it has a live cam to see the center of the town. I love many things Hungarian, especially the twisted minds. Hungarians’ brain functions differently due to their language. They invented more than many others. Best invetion, though, the coffe houses. Sorry for the diversion from the topic.

Bush, not Bolton.

honora, lady, no, no, no – with Mr. Bolton, I always know where his spine is. And it’s a strong one!

wow, that soothsayer guy is fully off of his rocker.

honora, your arrogance manages to surpass your ignorance, and you do have an active fantasy life. ( what did you “work closely with the Taoisach” on–His Mistress Relocation Programme? )
Like a tylical lefty wold-be bully, albeit a butch-femme one, you call people names when they dare disgree with you–AND THREATEN THEM, although with prissy crap like, “let’s hope that won’t happen again”
Right–so what happens if IF DOES HAPPEN AGAIN? What does a Clintonite harpy do when people dare repeat what displeases her?
I’ve read the routinely dishonest, ignorant crap you routinely write on this blog, and it’s tiresome and generally worthless. So whenever I run across it again, I’m going to remind you that you’re wrong, time after time.

A small minority of the majority party can scuttle just about anything. In this case, the problem is Republican, or should I say RINO, in the person of Lincoln “Don’t let the door hit you in the ass” Chaffee. If you want to lay blame for the loss of Bolton, that’s the guy who owns it. It’s a fight Bush simply can’t win without unanimity or the R side of the committee table.
Bolton would win a vote on the floor, but Bush can’t make that happen with no way to leverage Chaffee.
