Fomer President Jimmy Carter was called a “racist” and an “anti-Semite” by a caller on the Sunday edition of C-SPAN’s BookTV. Carter was on to discuss his new book “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid.” The call took place about 55 minutes into the program:
Female caller from Aurora, Illnois:
Yes, Mr. Carter, thank you for making me a Republican—because of your incompetence in handling the Iranians and…your cozying up with every dictator, thug, Islamic terrorist there is. And more importantly, I find it to be vile because of [untelligible] (sounds like “your blackest heart”). Because you’re an anti-Semite. And let me explain why I think you’re a bigot and a racist and an anti-Semite…
Host interrupts: I think, caller, that the name-calling is fine—is enough. But look, these are the strong questions that are coming from people…
Carter went on to reject the charge “with enthusiasm” and a cheesy grin on his face. The full video is at C-SPAN’s website.

I just love the look on Jimmie’s face - clueless as usual! And whatever happened to free speech? If a drunken Danny DiVito can say those kinds of things on the view, why can’t a sober person say their opinion on CSPAN?
ViperPilot on December 3, 2006 at 10:06 PM
Because CSPAN has the right to cut off any caller they want.
DaveS on December 3, 2006 at 10:10 PM
What’s with the bolo? He belongs on the new “Howdy Doody ” show, where his insanity can be kept out of international problems, may of which he is responsible for .
bbz123 on December 3, 2006 at 10:15 PM
To avoid getting cut off on a C-Span start with “I hope you won’t cut me off because…..”.
Maybe Carter is trying to show the DailyKos Kids that “Christians” can be good Democrats.

Carter isn’t a racist or an anti-semite… He is a complete idiot! Pleeese Jimmy, go pound a nail. You are so good at that, no bunnies to attack you!
Babs on December 3, 2006 at 10:39 PM
Jimmy replies, “I think I can understand that.” He understands nothing. After reading the review from Huffing post, I reached the conclusion that his manipulation of history is worse than his cozying up with terrorist. I thank the caller for handing him his ass to lick and smell.
Ouabam on December 3, 2006 at 10:39 PM
The man HAS to know somwhere iin that black little heart of his that he is reprehensible, and he is just doing whatever he can pull out of his peanut clogged head to salvage his “legacy” ,even if it means death and destruction to countless humans.
bbz123 on December 3, 2006 at 10:41 PM
It sounds to me like the caller said “you’re black in the heart.” Also, I think it’s a male caller. Aside from that, I couldn’t have described Carter any better.
eagles5 on December 3, 2006 at 11:02 PM
That was a male caller, Ian, and (although this time you got the gist right) your “quote” isn’t accurate.
That was always one of my main criticisms of your previous blog, which was one of my favorites: That you’d sometimes quote people, even in headlines, saying what they clearly did not say.
Since this caller’s views aren’t necessarily opposed to your own or at least you and I dislike Jimmy Carter, I don’t think it was intentional… I do think a writer for an influential and growing media source has to be real careful with quotes or they lose their meaning.

It just makes me wonder even more why do most Jewish people vote for Democrats?

Carter is a COMPLETE wack job. I was channel surfing the other night and saw him on with Charlie Rose - he was so irritating that my Dog “Dubya” attached the TV! Have the Dems forgotten just what a disaster his Presidency was? This is not opinion - it is a BOLD FACE fact.
An OLD Indian Chief once told me - “it is better to be lost in the wilderness without a guide than follow a roadmap made by a tourist!!”

And black Americans, too…?
SouthernGent on December 3, 2006 at 11:18 PM
Christoph, Ian’s transcription is 100% accurate, except for a missing “um”, and a missing “and” (before “Islamic terrorist”).
What were you claiming to be incorrect?
DaveS on December 3, 2006 at 11:22 PM
LOL
Jimmy makes me ashamed to be a nuke. How the man ever got through nuclear power school is beyond me. Because he is stupid as a bag of hammers. Whatever brains he had in the Navy, he lost them somewhere after he left (or he never had them in the first place. I suspect he was abducted by aliens and replaced with a body snatcher pod. Only a vegetable could be such a wimp).
Can I get a puppy like yours? Any on the way from his stock? You’re a lucky guy. Git ‘em W, git ‘em.

Almost as soon as he came out of Annapolis, Carter ‘fast-tracked’ by attaching himself to Admiral Rickover, but then left the Navy abruptly. ( Good story there, waiting to be thoroughly dug up )
When he did get back into politics at the national level, he followed the same method: attached himself to very wealthy and powerful Players and did their bidding
–this answers the often-asked questions of how such an incompetent clown jumped from a one-term Georgia governor to POTUS. Of course he’s a clueless idiot; he advanced very, very rapidly by NOT thinking, but adopting other people’s ideas as his own
Clinton did the same, you’re thinking, but Clinton was and still is an ideolog ( not that it mattered; that rapist would sell his soul twice over and more to make people like him while having power )
Don’t you love Democrats? No ideas any more, no guts, no leaders…..
Janos Hunyadi on December 3, 2006 at 11:31 PM
Hilarious. What’s funny is that he wasn’t expecting the criticism so he bobs his head when the calle thanks him for making them a Republican. You can see him confusingly nod like “eh, no problem… wait, what did I make you?” Then when the caller starts ranting there’s an “oh sh**” look all over his face. And then he glares at the interviewer to tell her to cut the caller off. I can only imagine he had handlers off set flipping out like the Clinton/Wallace interview.
RightWinged on December 3, 2006 at 11:31 PM

What did “Dubya” attach the TV to… as in e-mail attachment?
‘peanut brain’ is the epitamy of American politics over the last 50 years. The perfect example of the kind of intelligence Americans will elect. That’s why we’re in such a shat now. With the Middle-East. With China. With Russia. Duck, you can’t tell where it’ll come from next.
Griz on December 3, 2006 at 11:38 PM
I can at least grant him that he handled the caller with grace. And I sure wish they wouldn’t have cut her off, those are some strong accusations and I’d like to see her reasons.
Granted I think I already know what they are.
Keljeck on December 3, 2006 at 11:42 PM
…why not let him answer the question. Oh, yes…because he has arrangements with CSPAN restricting the sorts of questions he’ll field…and because civility only works one way. The Republicans, after all, are responsible for all of the corruption (er, Murtha), rumors of corruption (er, Reyes), and incivility (the rest of the Democratic leadership, party and ideological fellow travellers).
…and because Ol’ Jimmy, the teflon-ex-president, he of the toolbelt and the evaporating legacy, is not to be dissed.
I can’t wait to see the treatment the current president gets when he retires.
The man was the worst president since Ulysses Grant, and here he is simpering on CSPAN about how he stopped the war in the Middle East. He must not own a TV.

I remember the Thanksgiving after the 1976 election and my relatives were visiting from AL & my cousin Robert said he voted for Carter. My late Uncle Henry said, “Boy, you are a damn fool.” Robert said “yes sir”. Then by 1980 I asked Robert if he was voting for Carter again & he said, “Well, Daddy was right, I am a damn fool!”. He’s been voting Republican ever since.

I’d just like to know at which point did I arrive in an alternate reality where I (and others like me) could see the truth, and people like Carter and ABCNBCCBSCNNMSNBC all spouted the party line of head-in-the-sand Dimocrats like Ted “Swimmer” “Ask the Ruskies to derail Reagan” Kennedy?
Europe is mostly gone over to the dark side, and Asia is sliding backwards, picking up momentum as it goes.
How on earth can alledly intelligent people not see what is going on in the world?
And FYI Gweneth Paltrow: All the people talking about “money” and their “jobs” are your fellow Hollywood Limousine Liberals, not salt-of-the-earth Americans. Be sure to clarify next time you decide to extoll the virtues of living in Oceania instead of the United States of Jesusland.

Liberals are trying to prepare the world to accept the - to them - inevitable liquidation of Israel. Step by step, they are trying to make it seem “OK” that the Jewish state cease to exist. I don’t know if it’s a conscious plan from their side, but it is surely the jist of everything they are saying about the Middle East. It’s also the result of their “either you’re with us or with the terrorists” choice of excusing and “understanding” Jew-hating fascists. Carter is only the tip of hte iceberg in this regard. Most of “progressive” Europe would merely give a sigh of relief if the Middle East “problem” were solved by the removal os Israel - and the Israelis.
Halley on December 4, 2006 at 4:25 AM
The “history’s greatest monster” thing is from a line in an episode of The Simpsons, back when the show was funny and fresh.

The anger and frustration in that voice was palpable. Whoever that was, he or she was clearly trying to contain their behavior and words. I doubt anyone has ever spoken that way to Dhimmi before and he needs to hear more of that kind of thing and he needs to respond. We have had endless apologies from celebrities (I am sick to death of that!) so why not hear from Carter himself the response to his support for thugs and dictators?

Carter has more important things to do, he has to arrange Chavez’s inaguration party. Getting Hezbollah, Iran, Syria, N. Korea together takes a lot of time and effort (let alone his grieving for his friend Castro), please do not bother him.

Sorry for the lousy spelling -my Dog Dubya ATTACKED the TV. And I am really sorry that Dubya is “altered. ” He like the President is one of a kind.
Of course Carter’s answer was gracious - he did not answer the question. His comments prove that the man is out of touch with reality-
1- He refers to a historical “Palestinian people” - there was not.
2- He thinks that the so called Palestinians can be negotiated with and trusted- they can not – Excuse me Mr. Carter – do you remember Oslo? The police force that Israel trained and equipped attacked them when Arafat left Camp David, turned down the land for peace deal and declared “Infatada.”
3- He quotes various leaders saying that they will recognize Israel - anyone that really believes this is - as say in Georgia (southern twang) “a good man - but just plain downright dumb.”
4-He takes responsibility for the peace agreement with Egypt and uses it as an example of how peace is possible with the “Palestinians.” Well - that certainly is a stretch. Egypt was a sovereign nation with a military and borders. After trying to annihilate Israel and having their proverbial head handed to them they realized that peace was the answer. There were not 50 different terrorist groups that were firing random missiles into Israel while the government acts like they have no idea how this is happening.
Anwar Sadat was a courageous man that had control of his country. The difference Mr Carter is that Israel could stop protecting themselves at any time and enforce a peace agreement – the QUOTE freakin Palestinians could NOT.
In my humble opinion – Mr Carter is probably a good man – but he is JUST PLAIN DOWNRIGHT DUMB.
Hey Jimbo – why don’t you give Georgia back to the Injuns.

Jimmy Carter, the worst President of all time. However, GW Bush is working feverishly to change that.
voiceofreason on December 4, 2006 at 10:34 AM
I’m aware that my viewpoint will most likely not be “well received” here, but you’ll have a hard time convincing me that Jimmy Carter is demon possessed — IMHO, THAT position is FILLED with “over-the-top” empty rhetoric. Me thinks that Carter makes PRECISELY the same mistake that ALL liberals make. He simply does not understand human nature, and worse, he presumes that everyone else in the world must possess that same set of values AND that they must use the same reasoning and thought processes as a liberal Christian. Dare I say that W. is of a similar ilk –convinced that everyone in the world that “believes in the Almighty” has the same values and uses the same thought processes as himself. Want proof? Both men have been fooled by the Russians. Carter was “surprised” by the Russian invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. W. thinks that Putin is an ally that can be trusted. My question is “Why do we keep electing such naive individuals to the presidency?”

CyberCipher, Carter was even worse at handling domestic problems. Double digit interest rates, government price fixing of gas prices, it goes on and on. Reliogously he was a tool of Satan, for all of the seculars he was a liberal democrat. Pelosi may be his spawn.

Indeed, Carter presided over us at a time when inflation ran something like 20% or more. I have not forgotten this. I am not certain how much ANY President has in the way of control over this kind of stuff. I would not be willing to hazard a guess and I would recommend consulting an “expert on economics” when pondering such matters. I suspect that blaming Carter for the economic woes of 1980 is like blaming Reagan for the Savings and Loan scandals that cropped up years later. I am FAR more willing (eager?) to saddle a president (or ex-president) with the follies of his foreign policy than I am blame him for the failings of the American economy. I would be more inclined to blame congress for our economic woes. Feel free to tell me that I am wrong. I have always believed that Carter is good Christian man, albeit an extremely misguided and naive individual. I’m even willing to admit that ANY man that takes a seat next to Michael Moore at the Democratic convention has to be a complete moron.
On the matter of Pelosi, IMHO now you are talking a different breed of cat. With her “San Francisco values” you might very well convince me that she has a boiling cauldron in her basement and that her unholy utterances are akin to casting wicked spells on her adversaries. Yes, it may be that Pelosi is indeed possessed by the devil. Witch! (If you WANT a witch hunt, I can be very accommodating.)

It’s really a toss up between Jimmie and Lyndon as to who has been the worst Presidents America has ever suffered through.
Clinton didn’t quite make this particular cut only because he was more interested in flavored cigars and because investigations into his wrongdoings kept him busy.
Pres. Johnson was determined to screw up America and Carter was a screw up as was determined by every coherent American.
I’m just pretty sure that Jimmahs Ma ate too many clay chips while pregnant and Lyndon put liberalism ahead of American lives and our livelihoods.
Imagine the internet fun we would have had with Jimmies jackass smile and his phrase “trust me”.
Speakup on December 4, 2006 at 5:27 PM
Carter is a blueblood Communist. Distribution of wealth, government control of everything…the works! So when he goes out there to distribute his Marxist garbage, he expects the Marxist media to support him and not allow free speech from the “other side”. Amazing that this one got through. Good for the caller.
lynnv on December 4, 2006 at 5:39 PM
No expert or to belabor the point or more importantly to show you are wrong (which you are not), but Carter had a Dem congress that went along with his approach. Hand in hand they marched to continue, and increase, the economic decline he inherited. Gov. price fixing, gov. interference in commerce (oil, grain, etc.), increase in taxing resulting in a decrease of revenues, his economic advisors were doom and gloom and so was his speaches. To this day he set the tone for Dems.; the government as saviors, the people as lazy, greedy consumers. He gave 4 major energy speeches, cancelled the 5th (went to Camp David and got blasted for 4 days by his advisors) because the American people had stopped listening to him. In July of 1979, he fired every member of his cabinet and replaced them; trying to save the election. Reagan came in, and even with a Dem. congress, changed our course. And the rest is history. He (Carter) was the worst post-war president for domestic and foreign policy.
Where are you now President Reagan?
right2bright on December 4, 2006 at 5:52 PM
This is absolutely the crux of the matter. Whatever other evils he is guilty of, being on the tip of the anti-Israel spear is the gravest. He’ll have a memorable legacy alright - that of standing against God’s chosen people. Woe unto him.
