We’ve got wars and rumors of wars but at least one thing is going right: The Cowboys took a two-game lead in the NFC East by knocking off the Giants on a last-second 46-yard field goal off the foot of Martin Gramatica in his first game with the Cowboys.
Phenom QB Tony Romo didn’t have his best game but he was stellar when the Boys needed him, getting them within field goal range on a perfect 42-yard pass to TE Jason Whitten in the last minute to set up the decisive figgie. And not getting sacked in the final minute of the first half, when it would have cost them a chance to go ahead on Gramatica’s first FG. This was one of those games where you need a few good plays from the QB and otherwise, you just need him not to lose the game with a wild throw that gets picked, an untimely sack or other major screwup. And Romo didn’t do any of that.
This game was a gut check for Romo and the Boys, and they came through it just fine. Next week: the Saints. That’ll be a tough one. The Saints just seem to get stronger every week, and RB Reggie Bush finally had his breakout, with 4 TDs today.
As for the Giants, fans are going to be talking about that 4th-and-1 in the last two minutes of the 2nd quarter for a long, long time. Especially if they end up missing the playoffs.

To all you sad frustrated bee-yatches in Washington and New York and Philly…..fear the wrath of the Reborn Cowboys!!
Romo Rules !! Get used, to it, ladies. The Cowboys are your masters again
You know they’re Good when they play lousy and still win
Janos Hunyadi on December 3, 2006 at 10:04 PM
Beginners luck.
Ian on December 3, 2006 at 10:05 PM
Are you talking about Michael Vick, Ian?
Bryan on December 3, 2006 at 10:06 PM
Romo hasn’t played in the playoffs yet. Silly Cowboy fan :) E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!

Someone here liked calling the Cowboys the “cowgirls”. Who are the girlies now? Uhm?
LurP on December 3, 2006 at 10:13 PM
Yeah, Philly-danarchy, and the Iggles will soon forget what the playoffs are.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA
I can’t resist doing that, but after a long decade in the wilderness, I make no apologies
Janos Hunyadi on December 3, 2006 at 10:14 PM
One word, playoffs.
Ian on December 3, 2006 at 10:15 PM
“Playoffs.”
A word the 4-8 Redskins won’t be saying anytime soon.
Bryan on December 3, 2006 at 10:17 PM
That was the longest rebirth in history :)
I never thought I’d say it, but I’m glad the Cowboys are doing well. The rivalry lost its interest when the Egles were squashing them year in and year out.
Hey – do you think the Cowboys can lend us some of their cheerleaders to play on the Eagles D?

The only downside is that historically, whenever the Cowboys do well, the Demos also do well. The Cowboys won their Superbowls during the Carter days and Clinton days. In the Reagan era they kept losing to the Deadskins and then the Giants….
and what’s up with those candy-assed red jerseys, Giant fans? What genius thought that one up?
Janos Hunyadi on December 3, 2006 at 10:39 PM
Meh. The NFC is irrelevant this year. The AFC holds all the power players. Don’t give me Chicago. They had 6 free wins against their division this year which is the worst in football not to mention an extremely easy schedule outside the division.
I predict Chicago makes it to the SB because they’ll have homefield in the playoffs and gets steamrolled by whichever team survives the AFC.
Benaiah on December 3, 2006 at 10:52 PM
it was a good win for dem boys.. This is yet another nail in the coffin that was the Coughlin era in NY. The man has not made a good decision in a long time.
The Cowboys have a coach that should be able to lead them back to glory while the Giants have a guy that make us long for Ray Hanley.

Romo reminds me so much of Brett Favre.
I was afraid the cutting of the “idiot” kicker would bite the Boys in the ass… thankfully not.
What a game!
Opinionnation on December 3, 2006 at 11:20 PM
I don’t mind saying that the Saints have me worried. Both teams are 8-4, division leaders, and very solid. The Cowboys are arguably “the team to beat” in the NFC right now thanks to the Romo resurrection, but the Saints are a serious dark horse and they’re looking good. That Bush screen catch for a TD today was downright scary to watch. I just saw that highlight again on ESPN as I was writing this. Scary. But the Boys have Demarcus Ware, who ran down Tiki Barber from behind today, to deal with Bush. It should be a good one. I’m glad this one’s a home game for the Cowboys.
Bryan on December 3, 2006 at 11:38 PM
He didn’t cover the 3.5 point spread. If the cowgirls defense hadn’t laid down and allowed that 4th quarter touchdown drive, I’d have made a lot of money today. (Sorry, I live in Vegas.) I still hate the cowboys.
Benthoven on December 3, 2006 at 11:56 PM
I think the Boys can hold their own against the AFC – after all, they did beat the best team in that conference.
Rick on December 4, 2006 at 12:03 AM
I live in Vegas too, you need to “get right” about America’s team!
I heard the game on the radio (no TV in the house). Romo knows!
Mojave Mark on December 4, 2006 at 12:03 AM
Bryan sez the Cowgirls are “arguably “the team to beat” in the NFC right now.”
HAHAHAHA. That had me LOL!
Have you ever heard of the Seahawks? da Bears?
Ian on December 4, 2006 at 12:15 AM
The Seahawks won ugly against the Broncos. There is a three-way tie for the NFC second seed in the playoffs between the Hawks, Cowboys, and Saints. I was hoping for a Giants win this week and a Saints loss next week to loosen up the race for the Seahawks. Time for Plan B.
Go Saints, beat the Boys.
Mallard T. Drake on December 4, 2006 at 12:15 AM
Bryan, I think the Saints game next week is going to be a shootout, and will probably be won on the last possession. Drew Brees is having himself a hell of a season, and he has a lot of weapons. Also, Sean Payton is the one that convinced Parcells to sign Romo – and he knows Romo well.
Rick on December 4, 2006 at 12:17 AM
Dude, you need to quit drinking and blogging.
Rick on December 4, 2006 at 12:18 AM
Hm. Rex Grossman–17 turnovers in the last 7 games or something like that. And Da Bears play in a pretty bad division.
The Seahawks. Good, no argument. But the Broncos are struggling with major questions at QB, so that win tonight was nearly foreordained.
Meanwhile Romo’s got the highest QB rating in the league, and Dallas has the 4th best D overall. They have serious threats at WR and RB, a good O-line and TE. And now, maybe, a kicker worth keeping around. That’s a lot for anyone to deal with. Ask Payton Manning how much he enjoyed visiting Texas Stadium.
And they can win ugly, like they did today.
So yeah, they’re arguably the team to beat right now. In the NFC.
The Saints game–yup, looks like a shootout on paper. So I half expect a trench war of the D’s.
Bryan on December 4, 2006 at 12:24 AM
The Cowboys have one tough game left: next week against the Saints. After that Atlanta, Philly, and Detroit. They are in a good spot. They won’t catch the Bears unless the Bears start throwing games. (they only have St. Louis, Tampa Bay, Detroit, and Green Bay left.) So the race is for the number two seed.
Seattle has Phoenix, SF, San Diego, and Tampa Bay.
New Orleans has Cowboys, Washington, Giants and Carolina.
If you follow the chalk, the number two seed comes down to the Cowboys and the Hawks. Seattle really needs New Orleans to come up big next week. Even then the Seattle needs to beat SD at home on Christmas Eve. The Hawks have been so beat up this year, but they are just starting to get people back. Hopefully they start building momentum to the playoffs.
Mallard T. Drake on December 4, 2006 at 12:39 AM
Someone please tell me why I should give a Rats Ass about the freakin Cowboys? Bryan = Frontrunner like most Cowgirl fans…

I think that Rex Grossman is trying his best to throw games, but the Bears’ defense won’t let him. With that being said, the Bears shouldn’t lose again to any of their remaining opponents – but that’s why they play the games.
Rick on December 4, 2006 at 12:47 AM
I lived in Chicago in ‘85 and their defense was almost unbeatable (see Miami game). The difference between then and now is Jim McMahon and Walter Payton compared to Rex Grossman and ??. The ‘85 offense wasn’t great, but they were very good and did what they had to. It was a lot easier on them knowing the defense was good for a TD or two.

Bryan, that kind of talk sounds like loser talk. The Cowgirls have nothing sealed yet. With your logic, with Grossman, Romo could lose a few games and that he will.
How’s that saying? Don’t count your eggs …

Romo is an alum of my fraternity. Which means….

I love my home team.
Jen the Neocon on December 4, 2006 at 11:01 AM
The NFC, much like Ukraine, is weak, so I suppose there’s a legitimate chance Dallas could actually make it to the Super Bowl.
Readymade on December 4, 2006 at 11:14 AM
I’m no Seattle fan (Bears!), but they got jobbed last year.
As for the CowGirls, does someone seriously think that beating the Giants on a game-ending field game from 40+ means squat? If so, the Bears are a shoe-in.
They just got out-gained by Minnesota 346 – 107 yards at home, gave up 5 more turnovers, and won in a yawner. Everyone runs on their defense, the injuries are piling up, the quarterback couldn’t complete a pass to a teammate in an intrasquad game, and they’re 10-2, with home field throughout.
Cowgirls, my eye…
Jaibones on December 4, 2006 at 12:42 PM
I laughed when I heard this stat this morning: Rex Grossman’s QB rating yesterday was 1.3! Suddenly the Bears don’t seem quite so ferocious. The Bears are fortunate to be playing a light schedule through the end of the year.
Mallard T. Drake on December 4, 2006 at 12:54 PM
6 – 19, 34 yards, 3 picks. But it looked much worse than it sounds…
Jaibones on December 4, 2006 at 1:01 PM
Turn it around, though: how does a team with a qb playing like that win the game? The Vikes gained 5.5 yards per carry, and were down 23 – 6 in the fourth quarter.
They just win…
Jaibones on December 4, 2006 at 1:03 PM
How ’bout them Chargers?!?!?!
What is all this conversation about inferior NFC football?

Yeah, that kind of play will get your furry little friends far in the playoffs – that offense is something to be proud of. By the way, when was the last time the Bears beat a contender, and not a scrub like the Vikes?

Don’t misunderestimate the Bears.

East coast Bias man, really sad
Defector01 on December 4, 2006 at 6:31 PM
Rick,
I don’t think they’ve played any. Gave the Patriots a pretty good go in Foxboro, but Grossman threw it away. The drumbeat in Chicago is for Griese, at least for next Monday night. We’ve got four games with little on the line to find out if we have another QB, and to let Rex get his head out of his ass.
My only point was that this team in incredibly resourceful outside of the head coach and starting QB. And Rex can play. They led San Francisco 41 – 0 at halftime. They beat Seattle 37 – 6, Buffalo 40 – 7. Grossman looked like the best QB in the league. Now, he looks like the third best on the Bears. If he settles down, they’ll be hard to beat.
If he doesn’t, they lose in the first round…
Jaibones on December 4, 2006 at 8:56 PM
Heh, isn’t football such an interesting game. Just when you think you got it figured out something comes along to show you that you don’t. For example… Carolina keeps throwing games in the 4th even though they were the preseason favorite for the superbowl. The stoolers of last year were “out of it” no questions asked and come back to “win” (thanks to horrible officiating) the super bowl. (Which would have been enough alone to mean that this entire year ANY team that beats them is my “extra” team for that week.)
The Bengals started strong, then went completely to crap, everybody was sure they were completely out of it and their defense absolutely sucked… then three great showings in a row with 7.93 quarters of shutout football in two weeks — and not against total slouches either, against a team that beat KC (shocker admittedly but they still won) the next week and another team that had a 27-0 shutout of its own the previous week.
The Giants had a two game lead in their division four games ago and now they are back two games. The Titans were pretty much the worst team in football and Young was an inexperienced nobody and now they just upset both NYG and Indy, mostly thanks to a surprisingly rapid improvement from Vince (and several key screwups from his opponents). Etc etc etc…
Nobody can predict even the next week of the NFL. Much less the next month. Which is, of course, why you play the game.
But I am looking forward to next week. It will either be a shootout or a punt-fest, but either way it should be fun to watch. And having lived in/near both cities my allegiance is slightly torn but I have to cheer for the Saints. NO needs the boost in ego and hope FAR more than dallas does.
As for the playoffs, I agree with the guys on Sportcenter, if Rex can’t settle down and Indy can’t stop the run neither of them will be playing in Miami this year. And Jaibones is probably right that Chicago would lose in the first round (and probably so would Indy… again)… although it would actually be the second round because nothing short of a complete colapse on their part is going to knock the out of the #1 seed in the NFC. Indy might be a first round TKO if they aren’t careful that #2 seed is looking like an uphill climb for them these days, much less #1. And if Rex doesn’t settle down either Dallas or New Orleans (whoever faced them) would *easily* wipe the floor with them, and Seattle would have a good chance of it as well.

Robert, I started to write a note about what teams should worry the Bears in the NFC, but there aren’t any. Only the Bears can beat the Bears…
…and San Diego, Indy, New England, and Baltimore.
Jaibones on December 5, 2006 at 11:29 AM
Actually the Bears could probably beat Indy just by running it at them enough. Indy all-but has no defense at all… and their run defence stinks so bad I am actually benching peyton in FF. Not because he’s doing bad so much as he can’t get on the field, because everybody just runs on them and runs down the clock all game long. No time on the field translates to no fantasy points for me, so peyton gets to ride the pine this week (which of course means he’ll have a blockbuster game… heh…)
Baltimore’s not as great as their record, they aren’t bad they just aren’t as great as people think they are. SD and NE on the other hand, I probably agree with you. Although each of them have weak points too… but grossman would still find a way to shoot himself in the foot (or higher and more to the center) against them.
But the Bears have won several games on nothing but defense, and sometimes only half a game (or less) of defense (like vs. Arizona). Unless their D shows up at 200+% for the entire game the Bears do not have ANY hope of getting to the NFC championships, much less the superbowl, especially not against Dallas/NO and probably not even against Seattle… unless Rex stops playing keep away with his opponents DBs. He throws better to the DBs than to his own guys, and unless he stops that it will be another one-and-out playoff season for the bears.
