Columbia J-school students accused of cheating on ethics exam; Update: Investigation dropped?

posted at 12:14 pm on December 1, 2006 by Allahpundit

The best part? It sounds like they did it by leaking the questions.

Let these words be enshrined with “fake but accurate” and “getting out in front of the news cycle” in the pantheon of immortal journalistic utterance:

It is not like law school, where fine differences in points make all the difference in the world.

Update: Flip has the latest. Oh, the irony.

Are you sure this was not a course on how to apply for a job with the NYT?

Wade on December 1, 2006 at 12:20 PM

Liberals lying and cheating? Nothing new here, move along please.

JackM on December 1, 2006 at 12:21 PM

They should engrave “Fake but Accurate” in huge letters over the J-school entrance.

Clark1 on December 1, 2006 at 12:23 PM

It is not like law school, where fine differences in points make all the difference in the world.

So this is where they get the “nuance” they’re so famous for!

Are they “liberals” because they’re at Columbia or because they are in journalism school? Or because they’re cheating? Just curious.

See, this is the kind of question that should’ve been on the test…no matter how you answer it, you get it right.

James on December 1, 2006 at 12:39 PM

They are ready to go work for the AP.

Rick on December 1, 2006 at 12:42 PM

Ahhh… but… you see…. They were PUBLISHING the leaked questions, which means that its perfectly legal, and they can protect their sources…

And in fact, they should be in line for some type of Prize for this, shouldn’t they?

Romeo13 on December 1, 2006 at 12:45 PM

I liked the line before tha one above.

But they are striving to get good clips.

“Good” possibly being defined by what’s best for their career, not what’s fair or even true.

So no one quotes Woody Allen?

“I was thrown out of college for cheating on the metaphysics exam; I looked into the soul of the boy next to me.”

Attila (Pillage Idiot) on December 1, 2006 at 1:07 PM

And everyone’s point is? Afterall, they’ve been listening, watching and just doing what their folks, teachers, professors have been doing for decades. Monkey say, monkey do. More reason not to subscribe to print media and keep our remotes at hand.

Yep, this should be extra credit. Screw the rules, they got to the bottom of things!

Pablo on December 1, 2006 at 1:10 PM

You have to wonder if any of the journalism students had any idea of the definition of Ethics.

Snake307 on December 1, 2006 at 1:16 PM

Maybe the Duke lacrosse team should investigate.

mymanpotsandpans on December 1, 2006 at 1:21 PM

In all fairness, there is at least one student in this mess who deserves a job in the media – the whistleblower.

The irony is just delectable.

Cheating on an open book, two question essay test… I don’t get it.

In other news, water is wet, and the sky is blue.

honora on December 1, 2006 at 12:35 PM

Great question, honora. Answer: because they’re at Columbia, and in journalism school. Give JackM credit for proper oddsmaking; it’s got to be 100 to 1.

And the context is breathtaking: they are cheating on a pass-fail, open sources, out of classroom ethics test. And these are the citizens who will judge the rest of society from the editorial pages of leftist newspapers.

Heh.

Jaibones on December 1, 2006 at 2:14 PM

Great timing! There is a long article about Columbia at Frontpage today.

forest on December 1, 2006 at 2:15 PM

I’m just amazed that they have exams in J-school, judging from the quality of their product.

Phil Smith on December 1, 2006 at 2:49 PM

Fits in perfectly with what I have seen at my school’s newspaper. One of the journalism students the other day realized that there is no reason prostitution should be illegal if abortion is okay.

Sharpest tools in the knife drawer…

Are they “liberals” because they’re at Columbia or because they are in journalism school? Or because they’re cheating? Just curious. — honora

…no…because they’re traitors….

*DAMN*! I have to find a new word.

I wouldn’t rake ’em over the coals for being liberals. I’d picke ’em apart for wanting to be journalists. They seem to be on the right track.

Any chance of a national conversation on how believeable our media is? Any chance it’d be covered?

Puritan1648 on December 1, 2006 at 2:54 PM

What a bunch of ethical fauxnies

Probably, probably, defintely

EEprom on December 1, 2006 at 4:35 PM

FWIU, this was an “ethics in journalism” exam. I guess they all passed.

Any two of the three would qualify. Good analysis honora, you are learning.

It is not like law school, where fine differences in points make all the difference in the world.

Right, CBS, AP, NYT, etc. already knows that.
Blown up ambulances that were never blown up, burned alive bodies that were never burned alive, I voted against it before I voted for it, I don’t know how that money got into my freezer, Las Vegas real estate deal…never heard of it, my daughter was VP in charge of government contracts but that did not influence me. You know those little unimportant differences.

right2bright on December 1, 2006 at 5:30 PM

They were PUBLISHING the leaked questions, which means that its perfectly legal, and they can protect their sources…

They’re just learning how to leak security documents, national secrets, etc., so maybe they really passed the exam!

Anyone wonder about the other scandal here? The utter laziness of high paid professors who won’t put the effort in to proctor an exam?
Lazy. Lazy. Lazy. Overpriced, tuition is sky high and no end in sight, it’s rising faster than inflation, cause it’s being spent on other things besides quality, no nonsense education.
The US education system is busted from top to bottom, but the media won’t expose this fraud, for these schools produce Leftists.
