What’s with this muppet fascination? I’m not saying its a bad thing. Just curious.

Awesome. Awesome.

Hey, this is a family friendly blog. We gotta have some G-rated posts.
Ian did it for the children.

Yea, the Muppets rule! I heard somewhere that Animal was based on a real person but i can’t remember who, does anybody know?
Scot on November 27, 2006 at 2:57 AM
Man, it is great to see Buddy Rich in action. Do you have any Gene Krupa? These guys were two of the greatest drummers ever. Remember when these two would have a drum battle on stage during the old “Jazz At The Philharmonic” concerts? No? I guess most of you are too young to remember. They were truly the ‘good old days’.
OBX Pete on November 27, 2006 at 3:18 AM
Rich vs. Krupa - wish I’d seen that!
Admittedly it’s partly the fascination of it being basically a “battle of the aneurysm-resistant completely manic people.” :)
Budda budda budda budda bip bip bam, bam, bish boom bish boom budda bing bing budda boom boom!

Animal was based on The Who’s Keith Moon, who destroyed drum kits, hotel rooms, cars, swimming pools…

I remember seeing this as a kid man I’m old. Oh well it happens
Not to be taken away

Don’t you guys forget another two of the best: Cosy Cole and Shelly Mann.

Animal is my favorite.
My vote for the next Muppet show replay….
Alice Cooper singing Welcome to my Nightmare.

Who is this Buddy Rich guy? Did he play for the Beatles or something?
JasonG on November 27, 2006 at 7:47 AM
This is just over the top. How racist can a kid’s show get??? Animal might as well have just painted his face black.
Hack Ptui on November 27, 2006 at 8:20 AM
My favorite muppet is Beaker. I also like the two old men in the balcony.
Troy Rasmussen on November 27, 2006 at 8:55 AM
My uncle is a jazz drummer and idolizes buddy rich. I am a rock guitarist and regard neil peart as the tops in town. And the two of us will argue forever and a day about it. Since my uncle is also a brain-dead liberal i guess it is better we argue about drumming instead of politics.

OBX Pete - Yup - the good old days. Much more pleasant than listening to an “artist” scratching records. In 1964 this 10yo aspiring drummer was lucky enough to see Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa at the Latin Casino in New York duel it out - I quit playing the drums! Took up harmonica - LOL.
iam7545 on November 27, 2006 at 9:15 AM
I second Beaker,he rules.
bbz123 on November 27, 2006 at 9:20 AM
Too cool… my kids and I were just watching this clip a few days ago.
Laney on November 27, 2006 at 9:25 AM
Were’nt Cozy Cole and Shelly Mann jazz drummers? I still think that for pure showmanship and stamina Rich and Krupa were the greatest. That is not to take anything away from Cozy and Shelly. They were both great in the jazz field. Having once met and chatted with Krupa during one of his gigs in Virginia Beach, VA (a hundred years ago). I feel partial to him. He was a really ‘down to earth’ dude and I appreciated it when he gave me his autograph and a couple of his drumsticks after he had broken the tips off making rim shots.

One of my favorite Muppet vids. Thanks. That was quality children’s entertainment (and the adults find it pretty good too.)

Speaking about the Muppets and how old we all are-Does anyone have copies of them from SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE?
I have one of the series staring a stone Idol and a bird. I would like to see them all and cannot find them anywhere. There are more than one. I imagine that Jim Henson’s family has destroyed the prints or copies because they are adult-themed and oriented. It would be nice to laugh seeing them, they are lost but for the memory.

The Muppets are awesome and Animal is my favorite. I actually have a pic of him as my avatar in MSN messenger. I also own the TV series on DVD. I wanted my niece and nephews to be able to watch them.
If you have 15 minutes or so, go watch this special about the Henson statue that was built at the University of Maryland as a memorial to him.

Animal, drummed into silence by Buddy Rich. Can’t get much better than that. Don’t forget Sandy Nelson, either.

SuperCOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!
Good going Ian..more Muppets! Less Dems!
labwrs on November 27, 2006 at 11:26 AM
ADORABLE! Did you notice they were wearing matching shirts. Too funny. I love Animal, but I also have a fondess for Pepe The Jumbo Shrimp, from more recent Muppet films.

My favorite was the baby band. Possibly my all time favorite television show.
honora on November 27, 2006 at 12:04 PM
Heh.
Buddy is God-like.
Jaibones on November 27, 2006 at 12:27 PM
Drummer World has an archive of buddy Rich videos (low bandwidth QT, so even dial up users can enjoy.)
Among them is the Gene Krupa drum battle, OBX Pete. And please don’t miss the Westside Story solo on youtube, everyone! There’s a reason Rich is considered a legend.
When your signature move is a one handed drumroll… well, I’m convinced the man had a third arm. It moved so fast mortal eyes couldn’t track it.

My favorite line from Animal..”Woman! Woman!”
That gets my vote.
vcferlita on November 27, 2006 at 1:35 PM
Damn, that was good!
And, iam7545, I’d have given up the drums too if I had seen that duel. ;^)

I’ve read that the first season of Saturday Night Live is supposed to be coming out on DVD in the not too distant future, so they should be all over those discs.
I don’t think the Muppets lasted much beyond that season, as the SNL writers hated scripting their segments, and Henson didn’t approve of SNL’s harder-edged humor. So when the deal closed with Sir Lew Grade in England to do a half-hour variety show, Henson & Co. were more than happy to cross the Atlantic.
Ed Driscoll on November 27, 2006 at 2:12 PM
Yep, Ed is right .. it’s coming out next week:

$45 for 8 discs .. good deal.

Yup, both Animal and the Tasmanian Devil of Bugs Bunny fame are based on one person……
ME!

Animal! Taz like! Subsunk like!

I saw all the Muppet segments the last time SNL reruns showed up. As a Muppet fan myself, I’m glad I saw them, but they weren’t all that great. The high point was at the end of one sketch. IIRC, the god Favog has just conjured up thunder. He says, “The great and powerful Oz has spoken.” Favog was, of course, voiced by Frank Ounce, er, Oz, so it was a good in-joke.
Here’s another rare clip for Muppet fans. Henson appeared on Carson’s Tonight Show and performed this unique piece.
Limbo, the Organized Mind
Interestingly, it works well (but in a different way) with just the audio.
JimC on November 27, 2006 at 6:45 PM
Forgot to mention, he did the audio in collaboration with Raymond Scott.
JimC on November 27, 2006 at 6:46 PM
Glad to hear it OBX Pete, especially considering Buddy was not a pleasant guy. Sensational artist but not much of a people person. The fact that other musicians - good ones at that - put up with this guy’s antics is as strong a testament to his musical genius as anything else I can think of. And that YouTube clip of the solo is a keeper -
