American Legion to Rangel: “Apologize now”

Note: not “apologize.”
“Our military is the most skilled, best-trained all-volunteer force on the planet,” said National Commander Paul A. Morin. “Like that recently espoused by Sen. John Kerry, Congressman Rangel’s view of our troops couldn’t be further from the truth and is possibly skewed by his political opposition to the war in Iraq.”…
“I’m not sure I understand what is unfair about letting adults make their own career choices,” Morin said as he visited troops in Korea this week. “Troops serving today have a higher education level than the overall population. Why another member of Congress is insulting our troops’ commitment and education level is beyond me.”…
“While The American Legion shares the congressman’s appreciation for education, the troops in Iraq represent the most sophisticated, technologically superior military that the world has ever seen,” Morin said. “I call on Congressman Rangel to not only apologize to our troops but to also fight for pay increases and make significant improvements to the current GI Bill – reserves and guard included, as he prepares for a party chairmanship in the 110th Congress.”

The Dems are on a roll today, despite proof positive that most all of the reporting fron Iraq has been faked, with the MSM’s decision to call civil war there will be no incentive for Rangel to aplogize.I’ll bet they are giddy with themselves today, traitorous wretches.

I think an apology from Rangel (or as I call him, The Constant Gargler) is about as likely as a genuine apology from Kerry. After all, why would he apologize for expressing what he and his ilk truly believe?
thirteen28 on November 27, 2006 at 6:17 PM
Awesome! If the cowardly Republicans can’t stick up for us at least former service members will! Where you at, VFW?
JasonG on November 27, 2006 at 6:18 PM
These next 2 years are going to be funner…
Wade on November 27, 2006 at 6:24 PM
Proud of them for doing that. Mom’s dad was a founding member of the Legion and sent three sons to fight in WW2, even though the last one could have had a deferment to stay home and help farm. Grandpa Faith was too old for WW1 but two of his sons served in WW2, the other being too old for the draft and needed on the farm. I’ve lost count of how many cousins I’ve had who wore a uniform at one time or another, including a cousin of Dad’s who was KIA in Korea. Give me two minutes alone with that sorry …

Speaking of people who think insulting (or condescending to) the American forces is ever a good idea, see this article, AP:
Last place out of 20. Gotta like those numbers.
Christoph on November 27, 2006 at 6:27 PM
Hey Jason G, I belong to both the VFW & American Legion. I wish more Republicans would speak up for the troops but they seem to just want to stay quiet unlike the Dims who just want to trash those who serve. I really don’t get it.
Catie96706 on November 27, 2006 at 6:29 PM
Well, JasonG, you’ll have to cut the Republicans some slack. Every time they stick up for men in uniform, the media make sure to give ample airplay to Dems who 1) make note of the dearth of Republican congressmen who have worn the uniform and 2) feign outrage over the questioning of their patriotism.
Mark V. on November 27, 2006 at 6:31 PM
HAHA. Can Democrats even help themselves? Sheesh. You know alot of the party has to be thinking “Put a sock in it already, you guys are killing us!”
Theworldisnotenough on November 27, 2006 at 6:35 PM
They’d better be careful bringing up any “dearth”–roughly twice as many Republicans in Congress have served than Democrats. You all can check your own representatives here.
ReubenJCogburn on November 27, 2006 at 6:41 PM
You know I think that Rangel is the Dems’ go-to veteran since Murtha’s dirtbagedness became public. Doesn’t seem to be working out for them…
Catie, I used to be but I didn’t renew my membership. I’m definately re-joining the American Legion now, though.
JasonG on November 27, 2006 at 6:49 PM
Mark V,
It doesn’t matter if someone served or not. Just because Rangel fought in Korea doesn’t mean he died for our sins. I’m not against criticism of the military, but blanket statements like his, especially untrue blanket statements, should be apologized for.
What if someone were to say, because 11 female teachers were convicted of child molestation, that education seems to attract the sexually perverse. I’m sure that even if the person that made the statement used to be a teacher they would still be hit over the head by public opinion.
JasonG on November 27, 2006 at 6:54 PM
I don’t know what Rangel has to apologize about.
We know that a great percentage of our soldier come from middle class families in Red States – Rangel probably just meant that if these youngsters had a chance for a good life somewhere that wasn’t Red (or away from their Pub families), they wouldn’t have joined the armed forces. Anywhere around Pubs is the same as no opportunities as far as he is concerned.
And for those that really are poor and uneducated – if those youngsters actually had a chance for a good life where they could get jobs and good wages instead of competing with illegal aliens (who Rangel supports) then they might not have joined the armed forces, either.
Rangel probably really does believe that the armed forces are the last hope for those unlucky schmucks with no hope — like those that live in or around Red States (or Republicans) or those who must compete with large illegal immigration populations.
(And I just figured the whole “draft” argument!!! Draft everyone so that there can be an endless market for dead-end illegal alien entry-level jobs!) RAT-think – sometimes I am way behind….

Rangel served in Korea . . . so what? I, all of my friends and most of my family served in either WWI, WWII, Korea, or Vietnam but that simply makes us patriotic citizens, not war critics or masters of international policy. Frankly, I’m sick and tired of these jerks telling us about their military Service as a means of attaining credibility for their moronic ideas and unwarranted criticisms.
rplat on November 27, 2006 at 7:06 PM
Nice attitude.
JammieWearingFool on November 27, 2006 at 7:06 PM
An apology from Rangel would have the maximum effective range of a popcorn fart.
The point of an apology is for the one apologizing to regret his offending utterance. He’s a smug, self-assured traitor, firmly in with his constituency and his party, with enough of *BOTH* behind him that he need never regret anything he might say.
The point of a forced apology — apologizing to avert outrage — is to humble the speaker, which is clearly out of the realm of possibilty of this vestige of the worst of the ’60’s.
It’s time for his opposition, the conservatives of this country, to coalesce and *FIGHT* this bozo. Fight tooth and nail against his receiving any chairmanship, don’t let him play that tattered, old race card, and make him suffer politically for his words. Make an example of him if at all possible.
It’s beyond time for the gloves to come off. Civility has been out the window since Florida 2000. The Party of Treason fantasizes about assasinating a sitting president, slanders our servicemen and servicewomen, outrage every decent citizen, and aren’t ever held accountable.
It’s time for the gloves to come off.
Puritan1648 on November 27, 2006 at 7:35 PM
What is the argument here – Rangel is an idiot. Think about this – after the Kerry debacle one would understand that we are no longer living in the 60’s. If he really believes what he said – then he is an idiot for not realizing how it will be taken by our Military and saying it. His is too old and after his insult of the entire atate of Misissippi should not be taken seriously. We should stop whining about him and put him on prime time TV 5 nights a week. Rove couldn’t cause more damage to the Dems on his best day. Rather than complain about Rangel we should make sure that his each and every word is amplified with maximum voltage. I will bet that every other sentence from his mouth will prove his ignorance and magnify the Dems sorry attitude.
Viva Rangel!!!

My goodness. Conservatives standing up for themselves? What will they think of next?
Griz on November 27, 2006 at 8:24 PM
I think Rangel (and even Kerry) should be congratulated. Its not often a Democrat honestly says what he and his Party actually believe.

GT on November 27, 2006 at 8:56 PM
Rangel is my favorite Democrat, he makes being liberal look both stupid and bad at the same time plus he is such a media whore that he does it often.
Buzzy on November 27, 2006 at 9:54 PM
He’s just as dumb as the idiots who continually reelect him. Democrats. The least educated. The least informed. And the easiest fooled.
roninacreage on November 27, 2006 at 10:52 PM
Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life, son…
Jaibones on November 27, 2006 at 11:55 PM
God Bless the VFW.
Cong. Charlie Rangel is a bag of trash.
byteshredder on November 28, 2006 at 12:14 AM
are you a democrat? Just asking…cause they’re less educated, and someone who isn’t very educated would probably think
“and the easiest fooled” is passable grammar.

Where do you think in the dictionary his picture will be?
Next to stupid?
Says a lot about NY’er’s
Some that is….

I’ve seen the bogus, straw man argument about only veterans can speak about the military and war done to death.
Conservatives who haven’t served are prohibited by Democratic Party/Liberal edict from being allowed to support victory in the war of terrorism. “Chickenhawks” are not allowed to exercise their right of free speech, say most liberal/Democrats.
Liberals and Democrats like Rangel and Murtha who servered are taken as the only source of information and wisdom and considered the “lore masters,” and are the only ones allowed to comment.
Even if they are (1) crooks and undicted conspirators with NO personal honor of their own, or (2) political operatives whose agenda INCLUDES deliberately weakening the armed forces of the United States.
When a particularly stupid liberal plays the “chickenhawk” card in my presence, it is enough to recall that Benedict Arnold was not only a “veteran,” by one decorated for personal bravery in battle — but nobody OTHER than traitors has any interest on what Arnold’s opinion of the war would be.
Because for all his military valor, like today’s libeals and the Brownshirts running today’s Democratic Party, Arnold betrayed his country.
People need to remember WHO in this country works for victory in the war on terror and WHO works for the enemy.

Like any other profession there are those who could excel and those who just aren’t suited. I have three sons. My middle son has considered the military. He would do very well. He has the fortitude and personality that would be an asset. My oldest son is totally the opposite. Although he is very intelligent as is his brother, he tends to be meek. It is harder for him to take risks. Our youngest son is somewhere in the middle. He would do ok but it would not be the best place for him. That is the problem with the draft. The draft is random and so would not always get the ones who are the most suited for that profession. If by chance only the ones like my oldest were drafted, the army would not be as strong as it is with only those like my second son enlisting.
