Annan: UN should look at problems other than Palestinian

Notice the departing UN SecGen’s reasoning:
The United Nations Human Rights Council should broaden its focus beyond the Palestinian-Israeli issue to avoid accusations it is one-sided, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said Tuesday.
Speaking to reporters in Geneva for the last time before he steps down as secretary-general at the end of the year, Annan said the council’s preoccupation with Israel’s actions in Lebanon and the Palestinian territories while ignoring the situation in Darfur had caused some to wonder whether it had “a sense of fair play.”
Annan doesn’t actually think it’s objectively, morally wrong to single out Israel for criticism while letting Iran, Syria and other troublemakers off the hook (like Russia, which seems to be trying to kill off critics with reckless abandon). Nooooo. It’s all about keeping up appearances.
He’s just changing “Bucket” to “bouquet.”

The governments in the Middle East want focus to be on Palestine. By making the Palestine-Israel conflict the center of attention, the problems of their own regimes are pushed to the rear. This way, the anger of the people is directed at Israel, instead of their own governments.

This is all the reaction we will get from Bolton slamming them to the mat last Friday.

UN has done such a bang up job there; that they should redouble their efforts and do a bang up job in other parts of the world. Is that the point?
Its boring not accomplishing nothing here, when there are lots of other conflicts where the UN can accomplish nothing.

After Bolton speech touched a nerve, they actually stood up and acknowledge their problems. Very pathetic.

Did the AP report that the entire UN Human Rights Committee laughed for 10minutes after that?
Annan then said: “Yeah lets keep focusing on the damn jews”

Poor Kofi. Dragged down from the lofty heights of Speaking Truth to Power - forced to kowtow under the jackboots of the Right Wing smear machine until he spouts their pernicious Zionist rhetoric. When will they let up on this gentle Nobel laureate?

“Oh, nice!”, as Anslow would say. I love that show. While in England for a business trip a colleague once dryly said “we don’t have such people (Anslows) in England”.
What the h–l took him so long? What did he do in all these years? What will his legacy be? The U.N. as a whole is pretty worthless but Annan tops the wasteland of incompetence and lack of accomplishments.
“I’m now departin’, havin’ left little change behind, havin’ affected the world little for the better, havin’ changed the Middle-East little, and havin’ done nothin’ but rant against the U.S. and Israel. I’m leavin’ the U.N. pretty much as I found it, havin’ presided over the biggest corruption in its history and not havin’ changed much since.”

Promise? Or is this just another one of those worthless statements that come out of the UN?

You nailed it–and Kofi is their Designated Tool

Yes, Kofi, by all means broaden the focus. That way, the rest of the world can benefit from the same wisdom and fair-mindedness that has helped bring the Palestinians and Israelis to the happy situation in which they currently find themselves.

That should be our first priority to kick the UN out of the USA! Immediately effective yesterday! We should have No part in the UN. period.

That show was never the same for me after they replaced “Rose”, but it’s a great analogy!

“Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain…”
Annan is a complete tool.

…we’re forgetting the *KEY* sentence in this report:
…soon, we’ll have another corrupt Third World career kleptocrat to suffer through, but at least this guy’s regime will be ending. The new guy’ll take some time installing his band of merry thieves, and in the interrim…well, nothing…probably same old/same old in Lower Manhattan….
If the UN was peopled by angels, not heir to human vices, it’d be a good idea. As it is, the UN is the *WORST* possible sort of an organization: an internationalist advocacy group with self-imposed moral authority, a worshipful press, a nearly unlimited budget, and no oversight.
Why The ‘Stache would want to be seen in their company, other than to annoy and vex ‘em, is beyond me.
Puritan1648 on November 21, 2006 at 4:53 PM
You know what else makes me doubt the UN’s sense of fair play?
Not doing a damn thing about Darfur. And Oil for Food.
Nice Mrs. Bucket reference, Bryan.
