What’ll the excuse be? Drug dependency? “Exhaustion”? A Gibson-esque three-beer buzz? Or will it be irony?
Extra credit: which lefty blogger will be the first to say Richards should audition for that new right-wing Daily Show?
Update: Pathetic.
Letterman asked Richards if he would have responded to the heckler in a similar vein if he had been of a different race.
“It may have happened,” said Richards. “I’m a performer. I push the envelope. I work in a very uncontrolled manner on stage. I do a lot of free association — it’s spontaneous, I go into character. I don’t know. In view of the situation and the act going the way it was going, I don’t know. The rage did go all over the place it went to everybody in the room.”
Richards seemed baffled by his own reaction on stage.
“I’m not a racist, that’s what’s so insane about this,” he said…
“Having apologized, is there much more that you can do?” Letterman asked.
“I just have to do personal work,” Richards replied.

Never even heard of this guy. Am I missing anything?!
Bob's Kid on November 20, 2006 at 6:21 PM
Really? He was Kramer on Seinfeld. This is a Gibsonian meltdown of epic proportions. You really have to see the video to appreciate the hate that flew out of this has-been’s piehole.
Kid from Brooklyn on November 20, 2006 at 6:28 PM
Speaking to you as someone who supported the liberation of Iraq and supports President Bush, you can’t be a conservative and question Bush’s judgment or the strategy of invading Iraq?
In the face of some supporting evidence, no less.
Christoph on November 20, 2006 at 6:29 PM
Christoph, I think that Allah wasn’t saying that you can’t “question Bush’s judgement yada yada”, but, rather, was referring to exactly what his words state in no uncertain terms:
That’s a far cry from questioning whether the president is stupid, don’t you think?
DaveS on November 20, 2006 at 6:47 PM
(If this is a repost, someone delete it, but it hasn’t shown up).
Deliciously ironic… TBS is airing the black-and-white cookie episode, in which Jerry celebrates the race-relations utopia embodied in the black and white cookie.
DaveS on November 20, 2006 at 6:48 PM
Richards will be on Letterman tonight with an apology (via Drudge).
Valiant on November 20, 2006 at 6:53 PM
I am old enough to remember the skit on Firday’s where he and Kaufman pretended to get into a fight.
He’s crazy enough to do this on purpose, with plants.
It’s the Zmuda/Kaufman angle.
benrand on November 20, 2006 at 7:06 PM
Don’t watch TV, have never seen but a couple of minutes of Seinfeld. I, er, thought it was dumb.
Guess I just don’t get these things.
Bob's Kid on November 20, 2006 at 7:14 PM
Bush is an idiot. Why is this even a question?
Vanya on November 20, 2006 at 7:44 PM
Don’t you have any new material?
benrand on November 20, 2006 at 8:22 PM
The worst thing you can be in this country is a Racist, a Sexist, or a Hompophobe. Right, isn’t that a big part of the American dialogue?
Face it, most of us are a little of each.
Here’s my question. Do you think race relations have gotten better or worse in the last say 20 years?
CanaryinaCoalMine on November 20, 2006 at 8:24 PM
Huh, season 7 of Seinfeld is out tomorrow…
benrand on November 20, 2006 at 8:24 PM
Do you realize how poorly it reflects on you when you make a statement like that?
DaveS on November 20, 2006 at 8:27 PM
Ignoring the silly and fact-free rants of the idiot several posts above, I’ll stick to the subject on which this thread began. I saw a preview of Richard’s interview on Letterman which should air tonight. Jerry Seinfeld encouraged him to go on and explain himself. I was expecting a “Mel Gibson” moment but he blamed his racial rant on losing his temper. Of course he now denounces his racial slurs but, like Gibson, it’s hard not to wonder what lurks beneath if this so easily slips out - and in a very public venue.
thedecider on November 20, 2006 at 8:35 PM
It’s my understanding that Kaufman and the show’s producer were the only ones in on it, Richard’s explosive temper was real and unrehearsed
TBinSTL on November 20, 2006 at 8:39 PM
That’s not what I understand, Richards knew about it.
benrand on November 20, 2006 at 9:00 PM
Definitely worse, because of affirmative action and The War On Poverty; the bastard hellspawn of PC and white liberal guilt.
We now conceal our biases behind faux piety and institutionalized sensitivity. We patronize, and call it enlightenment. We segregate in the name of unity.
Today, Dr. King’s four little children are no closer to being judged by the content of their character than when their father first illuminated us with his dream.
Richards’ outburst is his own; the grand revelation of his internal racial rot. Societally, though, we might all own a little piece of that rant; as long as we continue our misbegotten war against individualism, whether through complicity or indifference.
Kid from Brooklyn on November 20, 2006 at 9:11 PM
Kid, muchos besos para ti!
Vanya, I bet you achieved so much less in this life than President Bush, or any other President.
Ah, but someone just came up with “global orgasm”. Here’s a topic we couldn’t have laughed about, just before yesterday. The opportunities are endless and, contrary to belief, we do have a sense of humor, other than racist topics, including self-deprecation.
Entelechy on November 20, 2006 at 10:01 PM
Grebrook, stfu about Fox News will you? NOBODY REALLY CARES! Why are you so effing obsessed with them? Did Fox News sleep with you and then never call you again or something, because you act like FNC’s psycho ex-girlfriend. GET OVER IT! CNN is bending over for you! Maybe O’Reilly violated you with falafel, I don’t know, but you ARE OBSESSED! Get help.
First, will it flop? I don’t know, but to predict something so confidently is pretty stupid, considering how FNC consistently stomps the competition..
As for South Park being conservative!? Holly sh**! Someone get Grebrook’s straight jacket. How are they conservative? Because they mocked NAMBLA and 9/11 Conspiracy Theorists? Yeah, those are partisan GOP party line positions.
RightWinged on November 20, 2006 at 10:29 PM
Oh and by the way, I predict Dennis Miller as the host of the potential con-Daily Show.
RightWinged on November 20, 2006 at 10:36 PM
Oh, and one more thing. Watch how quickly this falls off the headlines because he’s part of the liberal Hollywood establshment. How long did Gibson’s thing last? It’s still going on, but the extreme heat last weeks, if not over a month. This will likely not last beyond this week.
RightWinged on November 20, 2006 at 10:50 PM
The point is, Carlson and Scarborough can’t remotely be considered pro-adminsitration propaganda when they’re constantly ragging on the administration. They’re conservative, no doubt, and more power to them saying what they feel instead of instinctively supporting the Republican establishment like Hannity. But don’t say they count as some sort of pro-Republican force at MSNBC.
And of course Dobbs is a liberal. He’s just protectionist, unlike some of the more prominent Democrats in the post-Clinton era, plus he’s honest about the effects of mass unskilled immgration. The former position is a cmmon liberal one, the other is uncommon but totally consistent with American liberal principles, not to mention most Democratic voters. Nothing conservative about him, except for his willingness to give time to conservatives without demonizing them.
Alex K on November 20, 2006 at 10:54 PM
Thank God you cleared that up - I’ve been on the edge of my seat about that one ever since the topic was broached at the beginning of the thread :-D
Oh wait a minute… this is a Michael Richards thread? Hang on a minute -
RD on November 20, 2006 at 11:02 PM
He’s a loathsome offensive brute.
jjjen on November 20, 2006 at 11:21 PM
Amen to that…
RD on November 20, 2006 at 11:25 PM
Hmmm! Agree they could do a lot worse than Dennis :)
RD on November 20, 2006 at 11:27 PM
Dude check you closet for a friggin’ SHEET! You have now given this racist piece of shit the same excuse people of your ilk give the POLICE when they are caught on tape whooping some minority’s ass. “You don’t know what happened BEFORE the tape”! Yeah, they jumped up on stage and ejaculated on his chin, then, just before the tape came on, they did a MATRIX dive across the room and took their seats!
Why is it that people like you always defend the indefensible? From the closet racists on this site defending a piece of feculent waste like Mark Furhman, to this “Ali-Bubba” numbnuts who thinks Michael Richards is just “misunderstood”. Buy a friggin’ vowel and get a clue would ya?
Incidentally, I frequent the laugh factory Sunday’s for a night of urban humor called, “Chocalate Sunday’s”. Funny how he said all this on Friday, huh? Could it be that he knows that if he said it to an entire audience of blacks, that very little of his flat ass would be left today? He’s lucky I wasn’t there, I’m one of the new breed of uppity “N*ggers” (thank you so much Michael) that isn’t waiting for White racists to become civilized. Something like this goes down while I’m around and I handle it. Period. The newspapers would have been saying stuff like, ” Film and television actor K**** D******, beats the living SHIT out of Michael Richards for calling him the “N” word!”
Now let the racist apologists accuse me of “being too harsh” or some other b.s. that’s easy to spew when no one ever lynched your people because of the color of your skin.
Soothsayer on November 20, 2006 at 11:29 PM
They could call it “The Nightly Show” (or is that just too simpleton-esque?).
RD on November 20, 2006 at 11:30 PM
One is a registered Republican, the other a libertarian–though, in practice they are pretty much pure libertarian. To quote one of them, “I hate conservatives, but I really f—ing hate liberals.”
DaveS on November 20, 2006 at 11:31 PM
Dennis Miller is too dead-pan to host something that could possibly rise to the level of The Daily Show, in my opinion. I could see Colin Quinn doing it, though (used to do “Tough Crowd” on Comedy Central). He seemed pretty conservative to me.
DaveS on November 20, 2006 at 11:33 PM
Eh… on second thought, Quinn may be a bit risky and definately too much of a loose cannon type.
DaveS on November 20, 2006 at 11:36 PM
Seeing Richards on Letterman now. The audience is actually laughing at his remarks. He seems to be trying to explain himself but they only see him as Kramer. Frankly, I see the actor coming through loud and clear. Seinfeld isn’t helping. Yep, this blows over in a couple of days because the very liberal Letterman gives him a soft landing. Still, I think his career is pretty well over anyway.
thedecider on November 21, 2006 at 12:04 AM
Quinn would be perfect.

Micheal Richards is a Jew. I think he and his people know a little about persecution.
sonnyspats1 on November 21, 2006 at 12:45 AM
Ah, we hadn’t had a refreshing and insane rant from Soothsayer in a couple days, thanks bud.
Ejaculating on someone’s chin? How did that thought get in your head? You are the same SoothSayer who likes to rant how everyone but you is going to hell on a pretty regular basis, are you not?
And I find it funny that you go to something called “Chocalate Sunday’s” (which is actually probably called “Chocolate Sundays“). Did Nagin write that show name? Yeah, nothing like a show who brings race in to it by its very name.
And please explain how your threats of violence toward Richards fit with Jesus’ turn the other cheek, hate the sin love the sinner, forgive, message? Or maybe you should go to your pentecostal church, pretend to speak in tonguees and fall down a few times and forget this whole thing happened. Nothing like a room full of people claiming to be Christians acting as if they’re retarded, knowing that as they are consciously doing it so are all of the people around them.
RightWinged on November 21, 2006 at 12:54 AM
A reading comprehension course would tell you that I implied that it was the racist apologists on this site that were light in the “understanding persecution department”, not Michael Richards. He’s just an asshole. He’s always been one and yes I know him. You on the other hand just wanted to object for the sake of objecting and that weak comment is all you could come up with that wouldn’t get you thrown in the “racist apologist” bin.
Soothsayer on November 21, 2006 at 1:24 AM
I noticed you ignored my other comment to you Soothsayer, so I’ll ask you something else…
Are you Kevin Dillon?

are you a trans sexual ?
sonnyspats1 on November 21, 2006 at 1:53 AM
Damn, one of my comments not showing up again (in your spam filter somewhere HA fellas?)
RightWinged on November 21, 2006 at 2:02 AM
Soothsayer, come on man, chill a little. I’m not trying to minimize anything here and I don’t want to try to polish a turd (M. Richards) but chill.
Don’t let this situation control or manipulate you.
You got a point to make? Relax, take a couple of minutes off, and then craft your words into something that can cut through the B.S. and to the heart of what you are trying to say.

Cosmo’s name is Richards?
Kramers name is Michael?
Kini on November 21, 2006 at 4:45 AM
No, Cosmo is to Michael as Kramer is to Richards.

Where was the outrage months ago from people seeing the video of the black professor speaking to cheering, and agreeing audience as he demanded the total extermination of the White race? The video was removed from the Internet but no one apologized for it. Until the double standard is removed, blacks should just suck it in and deal the way Whites have been doing all these years.
Racial hatred is running both ways and should be acknowledged both ways. There is no group who is always the “victim.” But there is one group with a victim mentality who is capitalizing on all this crap.
